Silent Gear is a mod in FTB Skies 2 1.24.0, where it is version 4.2.1.1. Upgradeable tools, weapons, and armor. Completely customizable with data packs! (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Silent Gear?

2 parts

Silent Gear is the mod for building your own tools, weapons and armor, which it calls "gear". Each piece is assembled from parts, and each part is made from a material. That can be a vanilla material like iron, gold, diamond or netherite, or a Silent Gear one like crimson steel and azure electrum. If you like tuning your gear instead of just crafting the next vanilla tier, this mod is for you.[1]

This pack includes Silent Gear 4.2.1.1.[2]

How crafting works

Blueprints and templates are essential for crafting any gear item. Every item needs a main part, and tools and weapons also need a rod. Ranged weapons and fishing rods need a cord as well. Almost all recipes are shapeless and work in a normal crafting grid, and JEI is the place to check anything you are unsure about.[1]

Tip: A blueprint can be reused infinitely, while a template is consumed after one use. They are otherwise identical, so make blueprints for the gear you plan to craft often.[1]

Where it fits in this pack

The pack's quest book covers Silent Gear in the "gearing_up" chapter. Quest "Custom Tools with Silent Gear!" quest asks for either a Template Board or Blueprint Paper, and it follows a quest that is not listed in this chapter's sources. Most of the other Silent Gear quests follow a different quest, 35DAD5FF7B007310, which these sources do not describe. They fall into a few groups:[3]

Unverified Whether the ATM Star quest path uses Silent Gear is not shown by the sources here, so check the pack's quest book for that.

How do you get started with Silent Gear?

5 parts

Silent Gear is about building tools, weapons and armor out of parts, and every gear item starts with a blueprint or a template. A blueprint can be reused forever, while a template is used up after one craft. So your first job is to get a supply of blueprint material.[1]

Blueprint paper or template boards

The quest "Custom Tools with Silent Gear!" quest in the gearing_up chapter accepts either Template Board or Blueprint Paper. Blueprint paper is what the blueprint recipes in the pack use, and blueprints can be reused as often as you like.[1][3][4]

Template boards come from a different route: you use a knife on a log. They are what the template recipes use, and templates are consumed on use.[1][4][5]

Blueprints for the gear you want

Once you have blueprint paper, craft blueprints for the gear you plan to make. Most of the quests in the chapter ask for a blueprint plus a matching cast item, so it pays to make them as you go. Here is the dagger blueprint as an example.[3][4]

To build a tool, you combine the blueprint with materials to make the main part, such as the head or blade. Then you craft that part with a rod, and a plain stick works if you have nothing better.[1]

Your first metals

Silent Gear adds a couple of ores of its own. Crimson iron is mined in the Nether and azure silver is mined in The End, and you smelt either one into an ingot. The chapter has quests for Crimson Iron Ingot and Azure Silver Ingot.[1][3][5]

The pack has changed the casting recipes that turn molten crimson iron and molten azure silver into ingots using an ingot cast.[4]

In the quest chapter, a crimson iron ingot leads on to the Alloy Forge and the Salvager. The salvager can break down some items into their components. An azure silver ingot leads on to the Recrystallizer.[3][5]

The Material Grader

The Material Grader improves materials, and crafting it also gets you a tier 1 catalyst, Glowing Dust. Its quest, "Grading Materials" quest, asks for the grader plus one of the catalyst dusts. Better catalysts are Blazing Dust for tier 2 and Glittery Dust for tier 3.[3][5]

Jeweler tools for rings and bracelets

Curios like rings and bracelets still need a blueprint for the main part, but you also need Jeweler Tools while crafting. The main part only accepts metal materials. The quest "Jewelry" quest asks for Bort and the jeweler tools, and the ring, necklace and bracelet blueprint quests come after it.[1][3]

How does Silent Gear work?

6 parts

Silent Gear is about tools, weapons and armor, so the "machines" here work differently from a typical tech mod. The sources I have cover crafting stations, the material grader and the alloy blocks. They don't describe any power, fluid or item-pipe handling, so I haven't invented any.[1]

Blueprints, templates and parts

Every gear item starts with a blueprint or a template. A blueprint can be reused forever, while a template is consumed after one use. Otherwise they are identical. You craft the main part first (tool head, blade, armor plates), then combine it with a rod, and with a cord for bows, crossbows and fishing rods.[1][5]

Material rules matter here. In a normal crafting grid, the materials for a main part must all be the same, though grades and other modifiers can differ. In the crafting station you can mix materials. In this pack item.blueprint.types_allowed is set to BOTH, so blueprints and templates are both allowed.[1][5][6]

The pack changed the binding template recipe. Here is the in-pack version:[4]

The material grader

The material grader gives a material a random grade, from E up to MAX. It needs a catalyst and uses up one catalyst per grading attempt. Grades are normally distributed, and higher-tier catalysts push the average up. The default catalysts are glowing dust (tier 1), Blazing Dust (tier 2) and glittery dust (tier 3).[1][4][5]

In this pack, material_grader.median_grade is C for a tier 1 catalyst. Each tier above 1 raises the median by one grade, so tier 2 centers on B. material_grader.standard_deviation is 1.5, which controls how widely the results spread around that median.[6]

The pack also leaves material_grader.can_grade_parts off, so the grader will not grade the materials inside finished gear parts. If you put an already-graded material back in, a higher roll replaces the grade. An equal or lower roll changes nothing, but the catalyst is still used.[1][6]

Here is how you make tier 2 catalyst in this pack:[4][5]

Alloys and compounds

Compound materials (often called alloys) come from the metal alloyer, recrystallizer and refabricator. These are mid-to-late game blocks. You put two or more unique, simple (non-compound) materials into the input slots, then toggle the Work button once you like the result preview. One compound can combine up to four materials.[1]

The super mixer is described as making alloys of any material. Compounds from the crude mixer get a property multiplier, and in this pack compounds.crude_mixer.property_multiplier is 0.8, the same as the mod default. So crude alloys come out with somewhat reduced numerical properties.[5][6]

The Alloy Forge itself is crafted like this in the pack:[4]

Starlight charging and salvaging

The Starlight Charger applies the star charged enchantment to material items, which enhances their stats substantially. The charger gains charge when exposed to starlight. Its structure level can take up to 30 seconds to update, so give it a moment before you worry.[5]

The salvager can break down some items into their components, which is handy when old gear is just taking up space.[5]

Repairs and durability

You can't repair gear by crafting two similar items together. Repair kits are the quick way: fill one with materials, or put the gear, kit and materials in a crafting grid together. The material's tier has to be the same as or higher than the gear's primary part. A kit is filled by crafting it with materials and emptied by crafting it with a stick.[1][5]

Area tools

Hammers mine stone and ores in a 3x3 area, and by default they only break ores when you aim at an ore. Excavators mine soil in a 3x3 area. The pack sets ore matching to STRICT and standard blocks to MODERATE.[5][6]

The saw's tree search is capped by gear.saw.recursion_depth, which is 200 here. The prospector hammer searches within gear.prospector_hammer.range, which is 16 blocks. The wide plate upgrade raises the radius of hammers and excavators by 1 and doesn't stack.[5][6]

How do you progress through Silent Gear?

4 parts

Silent Gear progression in this pack runs through the quest chapter called gearing_up. It starts with "Custom Tools with Silent Gear!" quest, which asks you for either a Template Board or Blueprint Paper. Almost every other Silent Gear quest in the chapter unlocks after one shared earlier quest, so you can pick your own order.[3]

Metals first

Two quests ask for the mod's own metals: "The Metal of the Nether" quest wants a Crimson Iron Ingot and "The Metal of the End" quest wants an Azure Silver Ingot. You can smelt or blast the ores, the raw ores or the dusts into ingots. The pack also changed how both ingots can be cast: it adds Productive Metalworks casting recipes that turn molten crimson iron or molten azure silver into ingots.[3][4]

Blueprints and casts

Most gear quests ask for a blueprint and a matching cast from the sgearmetalworks namespace, such as Shield Cast for the shield. The blueprint quests that follow this pattern are:[3]

Some quests only ask for a blueprint, with no cast: Mace Blueprint ("Mace Blueprint" quest), Trident Blueprint ("Trident Blueprint" quest), Lining Blueprint ("Lining Blueprint" quest), Binding Blueprint ("Binding Blueprint" quest), Grip Blueprint ("Grip Blueprint" quest) and Coating Blueprint ("Coating Blueprint" quest). How does Silent Gear work with other mods?

5 parts

Silent Gear is wired into a lot of the pack's other mods. The pack adds or changes recipes so you can farm its crops, get its ores and raw metals, and cast its gear parts using machines from elsewhere. Here is where those connections are.[4]

Growing Silent Gear crops in the cloche

The pack adds Immersive Engineering cloche recipes for Flax Seeds. They turn into Flax, and you can plant them on plain Dirt, Rich Soil, any of the four Just Dire Things soils, or Mystical Agriculture farmland. The farmland options run from Inferium Farmland up to Insanium Farmland.[4]

Fluffy Seeds grow into Fluffy Puff in the cloche as well. Those recipes use Rich Soil, the Just Dire Things soils from Primogel Soil to Shadowpulse Soil, and the same Mystical Agriculture farmlands.[4]

Netherwood processing

Ores and raw metals from other mods

Casting with Productive Metalworks

Productive Metalworks casting recipes, changed by the pack, make Silent Gear ingots and nuggets. You pair an Ingot Cast or Nugget Cast with the matching molten metal. This covers Azure Electrum Ingot, Azure Silver Ingot, Blaze Gold Ingot, Crimson Iron Ingot, Crimson Steel Ingot and Tyrian Steel Ingot, plus the nugget versions.[4]

Crushed Shulker Shell can also be melted into Molten Shulker Shell. That is a recipe from the mod itself, not a pack change.[4]

Gear part casts

The pack also connects Silent Gear parts to a set of casts. To make a cast, you combine a finished gear part with any molten steel in Productive Metalworks casting. For example, an Axe Head becomes an Axe Cast. The same pattern covers armor plates, bow limbs, blades and more. In the other direction, a gear-casting recipe turns the cast back into the part. The pack changed both kinds of recipe.[4]

The quest book leans on this link. Several quests in the gearing_up chapter ask for a Silent Gear blueprint and the matching cast together. Examples are "Shield Blueprint" quest for the shield, "Crossbow Blueprint" quest for the crossbow and "Katana Blueprint" quest for the katana. Others, like "Bow Blueprint" quest for the bow, work the same way.[3]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Silent Gear?

5 parts

Silent Gear shows up in one quest chapter in this pack: "gearing_up". Its quests have no titles in the pack files, so they are listed here by quest reference. Most of them ask you to obtain an item, and several ask for a Silent Gear blueprint plus a matching cast item from another mod's namespace (sgearmetalworks).[3]

Where the chapter starts

The first Silent Gear quest, "Custom Tools with Silent Gear!" quest, asks for either a Template Board or Blueprint Paper. It unlocks after an earlier quest that is not in the Silent Gear list. Most of the other quests unlock after a different shared earlier quest, and I can't confirm what that one asks for.[3]

Blueprint and cast quests

Each of these quests asks for a Silent Gear blueprint and the matching cast item. They all open at the same point, so you can do them in any order.[3]

Blueprint-only quests

These quests only ask for a single blueprint, with no cast.[3]

Machines and materials

Follow-up quests

A few quests only unlock once you finish one of the quests above:[3]

Which Silent Gear config options matter?

4 parts

Silent Gear has a lot of options, so here are the ones you are most likely to notice in play. Every numeric option in the pack's config that lists a mod default is set to exactly that default, so the files show no changed numbers. The true/false and text options list no default, so for those the files only tell you what the pack sets them to.[6][7]

Breaking, repairs and enchanting

Tool behaviour

Starting items and machines

Client-side display

gear.allow_enchanted_effect is false, so gear does not show the enchanted glow. Material and part tooltips are both on (tooltip.show_material_tooltips and tooltip.show_part_tooltips), and tooltip.vanilla_style_tooltips is false, so you get the full Silent Gear tooltips instead of the simpler vanilla style.[8]

What changed in Silent Gear between versions?

3 parts

FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships Silent Gear 4.2.1.1, which was already in the pack by 1.0.1 or earlier. I have no pack changelog entries for this mod, so everything below comes from the mod's own changelogs, newest first. Each change describes the mod as released. I can't tell from these sources whether the pack tweaks any of the values mentioned.[2]

Paint and a new gear renderer

  • 4.2.1.1 fixes any crash related to the new gear renderer.[9]
  • 4.2.1 makes the quick paint recipe (paint plus gear) paint the coating instead of the main part when one is present. It also fixes arrows crafting only one at a time, missing binding textures on many gear types, and arrows and fishing rods not allowing rod and cord swaps.[9]
  • 4.2.0 adds new models for all gear items, which allows unlimited layers again. Some parts that used to be invisible now render, but most gear looks very similar. Custom textures are not yet allowed.[10]
  • 4.2.0 also adds the paint mixer and paint. The mixer makes paint from dyes, gear materials and other paints, and each gear part is coloured separately. Colour mixing now uses a new algorithm that gives more vibrant, realistic colours for both alloys and paint.[10]

Stability and repair kits

  • 4.1.6.1 fixes gear items breaking permanently when they shouldn't.[11]
  • 4.1.6 fixes alloy makers rejecting valid inputs from custom recipes, conversion recipes not being disabled by the config option, and a crash when hoppers or pipes connect to alloy makers. It also fixes materials not being returned when you salvage parts from converted vanilla tools.[11]
  • 4.1.3 makes the repair kit colour the names of materials and uses simple material names ("gold" instead of "golden") where it makes sense. It also fixes smithing tables modifying the input gear item and corrects the tier hint for gold to "0".[12]
Watch out: Before 4.1.3, repair kits didn't store some materials correctly, such as alloys. Existing kits keep their simple materials, but "Unknown Alloys" may still show up until overwritten, and those cannot be retrieved.[12]

New mixers, materials and traits

  • 4.0.30 adds the crude mixer, an early game alternative to the super mixer. It makes an alloy from two to four materials but gives a weaker result. The changelog gives a default penalty of 20% (a multiplier of 0.8) that can be changed in the config. I can't confirm from these sources whether the pack changes it.[13]
  • 4.0.30 also adds a default super mixer recipe, makes AOE tools such as the hammer mine 50% faster when you crouch to target a single block, and stops spears doing a sweeping attack.[13]
  • 4.0.29 adds an Alloy Forge recipe for Azure Electrum. It also fixes items with the Fireproof trait burning up in fire or lava, and arrow duplication with the repair kit.[14]
  • 4.0.28 adds the Breeze Rod material and the Wind Blast trait found on it. It also restores the missing "Tip Upgrade" option on the gear mod kit.[15]
  • 4.0.25 adds the Heat-Resistant trait, which reduces fire damage and stops the item being destroyed by fire when dropped. It is added to crimson iron. This version also adds a trait effect that lets armor reduce damage from specific damage types, and makes the Bounce trait work as intended after falls of more than 3 blocks.[16]
  • 4.0.24 fixes a possible crash when mining a block with a missing loot table.[17]
