What is Applied Flux?

2 parts

Applied Flux adds a way to store energy (FE) inside your ME network. This pack includes version 1.21-2.1.5-neoforge. If you already run an AE2 system and want your power to live in the same network as your items and fluids, this is the mod for you.[1][2]

What it does

The main feature is the ME FE Storage Cell family, which runs from the 1k ME FE Storage Cell up to the 256M ME FE Storage Cell. Like AE2's item and fluid cells, their capacities are based on bytes. By default each byte holds 1,048,576 FE, and the biggest cell holds 281,474,976,710,656 FE. That is the mod's default, and the sources don't show the pack changing it.[3]

The mod's page says the largest cell can store over 200 trillion FE.[1]

To get energy in and out of the network, you use the Flux Accessor. By default it has no I/O limits, though that can be changed in the Appflux config. It has a fast mode and a normal mode. Fast mode outputs energy every tick and can cause lag if you lean on it heavily. Normal mode bases its output on the target's stored energy and won't cause lag.[4]

Tip: The energy here is the FE in your FE Storage Cells. It is not the energy stored in AE2's Energy Cells.[4]

Your terminal shows the stored energy as a green fluid. It isn't a real fluid, so buckets won't work. You can fill or drain it with an energy container such as a battery or an electric tool.[5]

Where it fits in the pack

Applied Flux appears in the pack's AE2 quest chapter. The quest "Applied Flux" quest unlocks after an earlier quest in that chapter. It asks you to get any FE cell, the Flux Accessor and the Induction Card.[6]

Unverified What the Induction Card converts is not clear from the available sources, and neither are the crafting steps for the cells and the accessor.

How do you get started with Applied Flux?

5 parts

Applied Flux lets you store FE inside your ME network using dedicated cells. Once the energy is in the network, you can view it in the terminal and charge or discharge items right there. Here is the order I'd go in.[1][7]

Step one: Insulating Resin

Start with Insulating Resin. It stops stored energy from leaking, and it is the necessary material for making FE cell housing.[8]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: appflux:insulating_resin

Step two: Redstone Crystal and the 1k component

Plain redstone is too loose to put in a cell. Instead, a redstone block is crystallized into Redstone Crystal using fluix crystal and glowstone. These crystals store a large amount of energy in very little space.[9]

The crystal is what you need for the first storage component, the 1k ME Energy Storage Component.[10]

Cell capacity is based on bytes, just like item and fluid cells. By default every byte holds 1,048,576 FE, and the Appflux config can change that.[3]

Step four: Energy Processor, Flux Accessor and Induction Card

The Energy Processor is used to manage energy flows in the ME system, and all energy devices need one to route energy. In this pack it is also an ingredient in the Flux Accessor and in the 4k, 16k, 64k and 256k storage components.[10][11]

The Flux Accessor is how energy gets in and out of your network. It pulls energy from the network, and it needs an external cable to push energy out. By default it has no I/O limits, though the Appflux config can change that.[4][12]

Quest checkpoint

The pack has a quest in the ae2 chapter that asks you to have any FE storage cell, a Flux Accessor and an Induction Card. That is exactly the set you've just made. See "Applied Flux" quest.[6]

How does Applied Flux work?

7 parts

Storing energy in FE cells

The ME FE Storage Cell is the main way to store power with Applied Flux. Capacities are based on bytes, just like item and fluid storage cells. By default every byte holds 1,048,576 FE, set by flux_cell.amount. This pack leaves it at that default of 1,048,576.[3][13]

The biggest cell can store over 200 trillion FE, so you will almost never run out of room.[1]

Portable FE cells are the handheld version, at a quarter of the size of the normal cells. You can install an extra item in them so they automatically charge the items in your inventory.[14]

Energy inside your network

Terminals show the stored energy as a green fluid. It isn't a real fluid, so buckets won't work on it. To fill or drain it, use an energy container such as a battery or an electric tool. You can also charge and discharge items right in the terminal.[1][5]

The Energy Processor is what manages energy flows in the ME system. Every energy device needs one to route energy.[11]

Flux Accessor

The Flux Accessor can input and output the energy stored in your ME network. That energy means the FE in your FE Storage Cells, not the energy in AE2 Energy Cells. Its tooltip says it pulls energy from the network and needs an external cable to push energy.[4][12]

It has a fast mode and a normal mode. Fast mode outputs energy every tick, which can cause lag if you use it heavily. Normal mode outputs based on the target's stored energy and won't cause lag issues.[4][12]

By default it has no I/O limit. flux_accessor.io_limit controls this, and 0 means no limitation. This pack keeps it at 0.[4][13]

Watch out: This pack sets flux_accessor.enable to false. That option is described as allowing the Flux Accessor to charge the ME network with stored FE.[13]

Induction Card and config slots

The Induction Card lets AE devices accept or send energy.[12][15]

Tip: To output energy from a device, you need to mark FE in its config slot. Right-click the slot with an energy container to do it.[16]

The pack changes several recipes in this chain. It has its own versions of the Redstone Crystal and Charged Redstone Crystal reaction recipes. It also changes the Crystal Assembler and Circuit Cutter recipes for the Redstone Crystal, the Energy Processor and the Printed Energy Circuit. The charger recipe for the Inscriber Energy Press is changed too. Check the rendered recipes below rather than relying on the mod's defaults.[10]

How do you progress through Applied Flux?

6 parts

Applied Flux is all about storing FE inside your ME network. In this pack the path is short: make Redstone Crystals, turn them into Energy Processors, build a storage core, then put that core in a cell. The pack changes several recipes along the way, so follow the ones shown here and not the mod's defaults.[7][10][11]

The pack's quest book has one quest for the mod, "Applied Flux" quest in the ae2 chapter. It comes after another quest in that chapter. It asks for any FE storage cell tier, a Flux Accessor and an Induction Card, so it works as a checklist for the whole path.[6]

Redstone Crystals

Everything starts with the Redstone Crystal. It can store a large amount of energy while taking up very little space. The pack changes how you make it in the Reaction Chamber, in the Crystal Assembler and in the Productive Bees centrifuge. There is also an AE2 transform recipe for it that the pack leaves as the mod made it.[9][10]

The Energy Processor

The Energy Processor routes energy in your ME system, and all energy devices need one. You make it in an Inscriber. First you need the Inscriber Energy Press, and the pack changes how you make that in the Charger.[10][11]

Storage cores, tier by tier

Storage components climb through 1k, 4k, 16k, 64k, 256k, 1M, 4M, 16M, 64M and 256M. You start with the 1k ME Energy Storage Component. Every tier after that is built from the core of the tier below it, so you climb one step at a time.[3][10]

Portable cells

Portable FE cells are a quarter of the size of normal FE cells. You can install an Induction Card in them and they will automatically charge the items in your inventory. Low tiers use an AE2 Energy Cell in the recipe and high tiers use a Dense Energy Cell.[10][14]

Getting the power out

The Flux Accessor can input and output energy stored in your ME network. By default it has no I/O limits, and that can be changed in the Appflux config. It has a fast mode and a normal mode. Fast mode outputs energy every tick and may cause lag if heavily used.[4]

How does Applied Flux work with other mods?

4 parts

Applied Flux is built on top of AE2, and in this pack it also reaches into ExtendedAE, Advanced AE, Modern Industrialization and a Create-based chain that makes Evolutionary Matter. Here is where those links show up in the recipes and quests.[10]

AE2: the foundation

Nearly everything in Applied Flux is made from AE2 parts. The energy storage components start with an Logic Processor at the 1k tier, and every tier from 1M up uses an Engineering Processor. The finished FE cells also need Quartz Glass.[10]

Portable FE cells pair an ME Chest with an AE2 energy cell. The 1k to 256k portable cells use the Energy Cell, and the 1M to 256M ones use the Dense Energy Cell. Each portable cell also has a disassembly recipe that takes it apart again.[10]

The Flux Accessor is built around AE2's Energy Acceptor. The Induction Card is a shapeless craft of the accessor with an Basic Card.[10]

Tip: The energy a Flux Accessor moves is the FE stored in your FE Storage Cells. It is not the energy inside AE2's own Energy Cells, so keep those two systems separate in your head.[4]

The ae2 quest chapter has a quest, "Applied Flux" quest, that asks you to hand in an FE storage cell of any size, the Flux Accessor and the Induction Card.[6]

Energy Processor and other machines

The Energy Processor is a key crafting material, and the pack lets several machines from different mods make it. The first is the normal AE2 inscriber recipe.[10][11]

The Charged Redstone Crystal also leaves Applied Flux's own recipes. The pack added a Create sequenced assembly recipe for Evolutionary Matter that uses it. The same recipe pulls in items from several other mods: the predictions Generalized Overworld Prediction, Generalized Nether Prediction and Generalized Ender Prediction, plus Living Flesh, Nitro Crystal and Portal Fluid Source.[10]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Applied Flux?

2 parts

In the quest data for this pack, Applied Flux appears in the "ae2" chapter. The quest has no title in the quest book, so look for it by its place in the chapter: it is "Applied Flux" quest.[6]

What the quest asks for

The quest has a list of tasks. One accepts any FE storage cell, from the smallest tier to the largest. The rest ask for a specific item each.[6]

Where it fits in the order

This quest comes after quest "The Reaction Chamber" quest in the same chapter, so finish that one first.[6]

Which Applied Flux config options matter?

3 parts

Applied Flux keeps its settings in a single common config file, and there are only a handful of options. Here is exactly how this pack sets them.[13]

Switches the pack has turned off

  • flux_accessor.enable is set to false. This option controls whether the Flux Accessor is allowed to charge your ME network with stored FE, so in this pack that behavior is switched off.[13]
  • misc.enable is set to false. It controls whether the ME Import Bus can import energy the way it imports items and fluids, so this pack has that switched off too.[13]

Switch that is on

Values that match the mod default

Two numeric options are listed in the pack file along with their mod defaults, and in both cases the pack keeps the default.[13]

  • flux_cell.amount is 1,048,576, the same as the mod default. It sets how much FE is stored per byte in the flux cells.[13]
  • flux_accessor.io_limit is 0, also the mod default. A value of 0 means no limitation on the Flux Accessor's I/O. If you ever change it, the accepted range is 0 to 2,147,483,647.[13]
Tip: Since the flux cell amount is at its default, the capacity numbers you see on the mod's own description apply here unchanged. For example, the project page says the largest cell can store over 200 trillion FE.[1][13]

Unverified The pack file does not show mod defaults for the three on/off options, so I can't tell you whether the pack changed them from the mod's defaults.

What changed in Applied Flux between versions?

Applied Flux has a short history in this pack, and the sources only cover a couple of points in it.[2][17]

  • Applied Flux 1.21-2.1.4-neoforge was the first release of the mod for Minecraft 1.21.1.[17]
  • FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 ships Applied Flux 1.21-2.1.5-neoforge, so the pack is one version ahead of that first 1.21.1 release.[2][17]
  • The mod has been in the pack for a long time. It was first included in FTB Skies 2 1.0.1 or earlier.[2]

Unverified What changed between Applied Flux 2.1.4 and 2.1.5 is not confirmed, and no pack changelog entries for this mod were available, so there is nothing to say about pack-specific changes to it across releases.
