Gaze (A Malum Addon) is a mod in FTB Skies 2 1.24.0, where it is version 1.1.7.1. That Malum addon that was previously only on curseforge (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Gaze (A Malum Addon)?

1 part

Gaze is an expansion addon for Malum, the dark-magic mod. It builds on Malum's themes and adds new progression, systems and content for players who want to keep going deeper into the Arcane. If you've already been working through Malum in the pack and want more to do with it, this addon is for you.[1]

The pack ships version 1.1.7.1. Gaze is still in active development, so some features are unfinished and you may run into bugs. It's a fan project that is prone to big overhauls and tone shifts, and its author says it's intended for the Malice modpacks. Expect things to change between pack versions.[1][2]

Where it fits in the pack's progression

Gaze content shows up in the pack's Malum quest chapter. The first Gaze quest asks you to hand in an Umbral Spirit and a Veil's Edge. It unlocks after an earlier quest in the same chapter, so you're expected to be well into Malum before you reach it.[3]

Completing that quest opens up three follow-ups, which you can do in any order:[3]

Unverified The sources don't confirm what these items do or how they are crafted in the pack, and no in-jar guidebook was found for the mod. Check the quest tasks in-game and don't assume the mod's defaults apply here.

How do you get started with Gaze (A Malum Addon)?

4 parts

In this pack, everything you craft from Gaze goes through Malum's own crafting types: spirit infusion, runeworking and soul binding. The pack's quest chapter named "malum" gives you a clear order for the Gaze items, so follow that.[1][3][4]

First: Veil's Edge

Start with Veil's Edge. "Spirit of Sacrifice" quest asks you to hand in an Umbral Spirit and the dagger. The other three Gaze quests in the chapter all unlock after it, so this is your gateway item.[3]

Next: Encyclopedia Unveiled

Then make Encyclopedia Unveiled for "Encyclopedia Unveiled" quest. It unlocks right after the dagger quest, and the quest only asks for the item itself. It is a spirit infusion recipe.[3][4]

Then: your first rune

"Umbral Runes" quest accepts any one Gaze rune from a list, so you can pick whichever is easiest for you. The choices are Rune of Mimir, Rune of Svalinn, Rune of Hodr, Rune of Nott, Rune of Ymir, Rune of Gymir, Rune of Eir and Rune of Fafnir. They are all runeworking recipes. Here is one of them as an example.[3][4]

Later: bigger goals

The dagger quest also leads to "Weapons of Sacrifice" quest, which asks for Splintered World and Replica Dharmachakra. Both are spirit infusion recipes, so treat them as later goals and don't rush them.[3][4]

Other Gaze gear is made through spirit infusion too, for example Spirit Saber and Enchantment Workbench.[4]

Watch out: Gaze is still in active development. Some features are unfinished and bugs can happen, and the project warns it can go through big overhauls.[1]

How does Gaze (A Malum Addon) work?

5 parts

Here's the honest picture first: the sources for this mod don't describe any machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or pipe-style automation. Gaze is an addon for Malum, so it builds on Malum's spirit-based crafting rather than adding its own power network. What the sources do cover is how you craft its items, how Umbral Spirits drop, how the Soul Ward numbers are set, and what its rites are for.[1][4]

Watch out: Gaze is still in active development. Some features are unfinished, bugs can happen, and the mod can get big overhauls, so mechanics may shift between versions.[1]

How Gaze items are made

Everything Gaze adds in this pack is crafted through Malum's own crafting types: spirit infusion, runeworking and soul binding. The recipe blocks in this section show the exact in-pack recipes for the Enchantment Workbench, the Spirit Saber, the Soul Rapier and the Splintered World.[4]

The Enchantment Workbench is described in the lore as "Not quite etched in stone", and its book entry is tied to "Spiritual Empowerment". The sources don't explain how its interface works, so I can only show you how to craft it.[4][5]

Runes and Umbral Spirits

Gaze's runes are made through runeworking, and every one of them needs an Umbral Spirit as an ingredient. Here's the Rune of Eir as an example.[4]

Rune of EirMod recipe

Runeworking (malum)

Recipe id: malum:runeworking/rune_of_eir

The in-game book gives each rune a short tagline. Only some runes have one in the sources I was given:[5]

The Rune of Ymir and Rune of Fafnir are also made by runeworking, but the sources give no description of what they do.[4]

Umbral Spirits come from kills made with a Veil Dagger. Players always drop them, and the list of other entities that can drop them is set in umbralDropEntities. In this pack that list contains only the villager.[6]

  • umbralDropChance is 0.1 here, on a range from 0.0 to 1.0, for the configured entities. That is the same as the mod default, so the pack hasn't changed it. Players always drop them.[6]
  • doVillagerUmbralsOnServer is true, so villagers can drop Umbral Spirits on a multiplayer server too. Singleplayer is always allowed.[6]
  • farmUmbrals is true, so mobs holding Veil's Edge (a zombie, for example) can trigger umbral drops from the configured mobs or players.[6]

Soul Ward settings

Some config options tie other stats into the Soul Ward. integrityRatio sets how much Soul Ward Integrity you get per point of Armour Toughness. It's 5 in this pack, the same as the mod default, and it can range from 1.0 to 10.0.[6]

healingConversionAttributes lists healing attributes that convert into Soul Ward Recovery Rate. This pack lists only apothic_attributes:healing_received. The config notes that other mods' options haven't been tested.[6]

Rites

Gaze adds its own lesser rites for the aerial, aqueous, arcane, earthen, infernal, sacred and wicked types, plus a corrupt version of each and an umbral rite. The book entries describe them with taglines such as "Manipulating the Weather", "Manipulating the Undead" and "Manipulating Earth's Bounty".[5]

The rites lore says they offer a way to pull creatures into traps and items into containers, which is about as close to automation as the sources get. Gaze rites are switched on in this pack, because disableGazeRites is false.[5][6]

Bestiary and particles

The Gaze bestiary is a "record of lost souls". With bestiary set to true, entries only show up after you've made kills, and you need to open your statistics to reveal them. fancyParticles is also on, and the config notes it is not currently a client-side option.[5][6]

How do you progress through Gaze (A Malum Addon)?

4 parts

Gaze is a Malum addon, and in this pack its items are crafted with Malum's own machinery: Spirit Infusion, runeworking and Soul Binding. The Malum quest chapter gives you a clear route through the first Gaze items.[3][4]

Starting point: Veil's Edge

The entry point is the quest "Spirit of Sacrifice" quest. It asks you to hand in an Umbral Spirit and a Veil's Edge. It unlocks after an earlier quest in the same chapter, and every other Gaze quest in the chapter unlocks after it.[3]

Veil's Edge is made with Malum's Spirit Infusion. The exact in-pack recipe is below.[4]

What unlocks next

Once the Veil's Edge quest is done, the chapter opens these quests, all of them following it directly.[3]

Recipes for those quests

The Splintered World and Replica Dharmachakra are both Spirit Infusion recipes.[4]

The Encyclopedia Unveiled is made with Spirit Infusion too.[4]

Spirit Infusion (malum)

Recipe id: malum:spirit_infusion/encyclopedia_unveiled

For the rune quest you only need to hand in a single rune of your choice. Every rune has its own runeworking recipe. Here is the Rune of Ymir as an example.[3][4]

Runeworking (malum)

Gaze items without quests

Several more Gaze items have in-pack Spirit Infusion recipes, but the quests in the sources do not ask for them: Ring of Mage Ethics, Necklace of Arcane Charge, Ring of Idle Meditation, Seidhr, Sloth Brooch, Soul Rapier, Spirit-Channel Pouch, Spirit Saber, Swift Spiral and the Enchantment Workbench.[3][4]

The Spirit Saber is also an input for a Soul Binding recipe called Domain of Swords. A separate Soul Binding recipe, Pact of Encroaching Malice, makes another Gaze item.[4]

Unverified The quests for this mod have no titles or descriptions in the sources here, and no in-jar guidebook or official documentation was found. What each item and rune does, and any intended tier order beyond the quest links above, is unverified.

How does Gaze (A Malum Addon) work with other mods?

4 parts

Gaze is an expansion addon for Malum, and in this pack the recipe data shows that link clearly. The Gaze items in the recipes are crafted in Malum's own crafting systems, using Malum materials. Once you're set up with Malum, Gaze fits into what you're already doing.[1][4]

Spirit infusion

Most of Gaze's items come out of Malum's spirit infusion. That covers Spirit Saber, Soul Rapier, Veil's Edge, Seidhr, Necklace of Arcane Charge, Ring of Mage Ethics, Ring of Idle Meditation, Sloth Brooch and Swift Spiral. The rest of the list is Replica Dharmachakra, Splintered World, Spirit-Channel Pouch, Enchantment Workbench and Encyclopedia Unveiled.[4]

Several of these start from Malum items. The Encyclopedia Unveiled is made from Encyclopedia Esoterica, and the Spirit-Channel Pouch is made from the Soulwoven Pouch. A few recipes also take vanilla items, which the recipe blocks below show exactly.[4]

Runeworking

Gaze's runes are crafted through Malum's runeworking. They are Rune of Ymir, Rune of Gymir, Rune of Eir, Rune of Fafnir, Rune of Mimir, Rune of Hodr, Rune of Svalinn and Rune of Nott. Every one of these recipes uses Umbral Spirit.[4]

Quests

The Gaze quests sit inside the pack's Malum chapter. "Spirit of Sacrifice" quest comes after another quest in that chapter, and its tasks are Umbral Spirit and Veil's Edge.[3]

Other quests unlock after that one. "Weapons of Sacrifice" quest asks for Splintered World and Replica Dharmachakra. "Umbral Runes" quest accepts any one of the Gaze runes. "Encyclopedia Unveiled" quest asks for Encyclopedia Unveiled.[3]

Tip: Get Umbral Spirit flowing early. It's a task in the quest the other Gaze quests follow, and every Gaze rune recipe uses it.[3][4]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Gaze (A Malum Addon)?

2 parts

This mod shows up in one quest chapter in this pack: the Malum chapter. It holds four quests, and none of them has a title, so you'll recognise them by their tasks.[3]

Where it starts

The first Gaze quest is "Spirit of Sacrifice" quest. It unlocks after an earlier quest in the chapter, which isn't one of the Gaze quests. It asks you to hand in an Umbral Spirit and a Veil's Edge. Everything else in the Gaze set depends on this quest.[3]

What opens up afterwards

Once you finish that first quest, three more open up side by side. None of them is listed as requiring another, so you can take them in any order.[3]

Tip: The rune quest takes just one of the listed runes, so you can hand in whichever one is easiest for you to get.[3]

Unverified The quest file doesn't list any rewards, descriptions or crafting routes for these items, so those aren't covered here.

Which Gaze (A Malum Addon) config options matter?

3 parts

Gaze keeps its settings in config/gaze-common.toml. The options you're most likely to care about cover Umbral Spirit drops, Soul Ward and the rites. Here is how this pack sets each one.[6]

Umbral Spirit drops

  • umbralDropChance is 0.1 in this pack, the same as the mod default. It is the chance for configured entities to drop Umbral Spirits when killed with a Veil Dagger, and it can be set from 0.0 to 1.0. Players always drop them at 100%.[6]
  • umbralDropEntities is set to minecraft:villager only. Players are always on this list, so you don't need to add them.[6]
  • doVillagerUmbralsOnServer is true, so Villagers can drop Umbral Spirits on a multiplayer server. Singleplayer is always allowed.[6]
  • farmUmbrals is true. That means mobs holding Veil's Edge, such as Zombies, can trigger umbral drops from the configured mobs or players.[6]

Soul Ward

  • integrityRatio is 5 in this pack, which matches the mod default. It controls how much Soul Ward Integrity you get for a single Armour Toughness point, and it can be set from 1.0 to 10.0.[6]
  • healingConversionAttributes is set to apothic_attributes:healing_received. Healing-related attributes in this list are converted into Soul Ward Recovery Rate if present. The config notes that options other than Apothic haven't been tested.[6]

Rites, bestiary and visuals

  • disableGazeRites is false, so Gaze rites are not disabled.[6]
  • bestiary is true. Bestiary entries require kills to be visible, and you have to open statistics to reveal them.[6]
  • fancyParticles is true. The config notes that this is not currently a client-side option.[6]
Tip: If you're hunting for Umbral Spirits, umbralDropChance is the value to watch, since it sets how often a Veil Dagger kill pays off on configured mobs. This pack leaves it at the mod default of 0.1.[6]
