Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks is a mod in FTB Skies 2 1.24.0, where it is version 1.21.1-3.16.3. A magic mod bringing back the classic RPG spellcasting fantasy. (irons spells and spellbooks) (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks?

2 parts

Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks is an RPG-inspired spellcasting mod. You fight dangerous wizards, raid structures, delve through dungeons, collect resources and hunt down powerful magical items. The pack ships version 1.21.1-3.16.3 of the mod.[1][2]

It's for you if you want a dedicated mage playstyle. Casting implements are right-clicked to cast your active spell, and most also give passive benefits. Every spell belongs to a school of magic, so you can master a single school with matching gear or mix and match.[3][4]

How progression flows

  • Early game is about exploring and looting. Scrolls are your first taste of magic. Save them and inscribe them into a spell book at the Inscription Table, so you can cast the spell again and again. Beginner spell books can be crafted from basic materials.[5]
  • Mid game starts once you reach nether-level resources. That unlocks the Scroll Forge, which crafts scrolls from ink, paper and a focus. The ink sets the rarity (and so the level), and the focus sets the school. Intermediate spell books also become craftable from nether resources, and you start making stronger armor from Arcane Cloth.[6]
  • Late game is reached with netherite and vast quantities of basic resources, and it runs on the Arcane Anvil. This is the most powerful crafting station. It levels up scrolls, upgrades armor and spell books, and imbues weapons with spells. Upgrades are the final form of progression.[7]

Following it with quests

The pack has a quest chapter for this mod that mirrors that flow. It starts with a Flimsy Journal or Ironbound Tome in "Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks" quest, then the Inscription Table in "Inscribing Spells" quest. From there it branches into more spell books, ink with the Scroll Forge in "Crafting Spells" quest, and the Arcane Anvil in "Upgrading Spells & Equipment" quest.[8]

Another branch, starting at "Arcane Discoveries" quest, asks for Arcane Essence, Blank Runestone and Raw Mithril. It leads on to rings, Arcane Cloth, armor sets and upgrade items.[8]

Tip: Resist the urge to burn scrolls on the spot. A scroll cast on its own ignores mana cost and cooldown but is used up, while one inscribed into a spell book gives you the spell for good.[5][9]

How do you get started with Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks?

2 parts

Early game in Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks is mostly exploring and looting. Magic structures are scattered across the world and full of loot, but each one is home to a powerful mage who will not take kindly to you, so go in prepared.[5]

Your first steps, in order

  1. Grab a Scroll. It's your first taste of magic, and scrolls can be found in chests, looted from mobs, or crafted. The pack has a quest for it: "Air Dash" quest.[5][9][10]
  2. Don't burn the scroll right away. You can consume it to cast its spell once, skipping mana cost and cooldown, but it's better to save it and inscribe it into a spell book, where the spell can be used again and again.[5][9]
  3. Craft a beginner spell book. Beginner spell books can be made from basic materials, and the Flimsy Journal (Flimsy Journal) has its own recipe in the pack, shown below. The first spell book quest, "Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks" quest, accepts either it or the Ironbound Tome (Ironbound Tome).[5][8][11]
  4. Make an Inscription Table. To properly use a spell book you have to inscribe spells into it at this table, using scrolls. If you take a scroll back out of the book, the spell is uninscribed. The pack's quest for the table is "Inscribing Spells" quest, and it follows the spell book quest.[5][8]
  5. Pick up Arcane Essence. It is used to craft Wandering Magician armor, an early source of additional max mana. That armor set has its own quest, "The Wandering Magician Armor Set" quest.[5][8]

This is the pack's recipe for the Flimsy Journal, your first spell book.

Tip: Some basic materials can be found sparsely in vanilla structures. To get high quantities of arcane essence later on, you'll need to focus on raiding magical structures.[5][6]

What to aim for next

Once you have a book with a spell inscribed, the next big station to aim for is the Arcane Anvil. It is the most powerful crafting station, used to level up your scrolls, upgrade armor and spell books, and imbue weapons with spells. The pack has a quest for it, "Upgrading Spells & Equipment" quest, and here is its in-pack recipe.[7][8]

The Alchemist Cauldron is also worth knowing about. Scrolls can be recycled through it into more useful spells. In the pack's quest book, its quest "The Alchemist Cauldron" quest comes after "A Magical Trip To The Nether" quest. Here is its in-pack recipe.[8][9]

How does Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks work?

7 parts

Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks doesn't run on power, fluids or pipes. Its systems are crafting stations and a spell-learning loop, and this section covers how the sources describe them. Everything below is the mod's own in-game guide, so treat it as how the mod behaves unless a recipe says the pack changed it.[5][6][7][12]

Scrolls and the Inscription Table

Each scroll holds one spell with a level, a bit like an enchanted book. You can find scrolls in chests, loot them from mobs or craft them.[9]

A scroll can be used on its own to cast its spell. That skips the mana cost and the cooldown, but the scroll is consumed. The better use is to inscribe it into a spell book at the Inscription Table, so you can cast the spell again and again. You can pull a scroll back out of a book, but doing so uninscribes the spell.[5][9]

Scroll Forge and ink

Once you reach nether-level resources, the Scroll Forge lets you craft your own scrolls. It takes ink, paper and a focus. The ink sets the rarity, and so the level, while the focus sets the spell's school.[6]

Ink has to match the spell. Common ink only crafts the lowest level of spells, and if a spell's lowest level is above common, common ink can't craft it. The same rule applies to every other ink tier. Rare and higher inks mostly come from magic treasure chests or from killing spellcasting mobs. Some spells have several legendary levels, and you need the Arcane Anvil to reach those.[13]

School focuses

Every school has a representative focus item that you use as a crafting ingredient. These are the ones the guide lists:[4]

Eldritch is the odd one out. You can't craft or cast it at first. You have to find scattered ancient manuscript shreds and piece them back together with an echo shard. Consuming the restored manuscript teaches you a single Eldritch spell, and after that the Echo Shard works as the focus.[4]

Arcane Anvil

The Arcane Anvil is the most powerful crafting station in the mod. You use it to level up scrolls, upgrade armor and spell books, and imbue weapons with spells. The guide places it in the late game, once you have netherite and lots of basic resources.[7]

To raise a scroll's level, combine it in the anvil with the ink of the rarity for its next level.[9]

Unique spell books come with locked spells that you can't remove or edit. You can still improve them: combine the book in the Arcane Anvil with a higher-level scroll of the same spell to raise the level of the locked spell.[14]

Upgrades

Upgrades are the final stage of progression. By default, any armor and any spell book can be upgraded. An upgrade orb for a specific attribute is made from a base upgrade orb plus 8 runes of that attribute. The Blood Upgrade Orb is one example, and the pack uses this recipe for it:[7][11]

Alchemist Cauldron

The Alchemist Cauldron lets you recycle scrolls into more useful spells. It also cooks mobs for blood: put a mob inside to get a Blood Vial. A vanilla cauldron with a campfire underneath does the same job.[9][15]

Runes, armor and key materials

School armor is made from arcane cloth and the rune of a particular school. Runestones turn up in magical structures, and class mages always drop a rune of their school. The pack's Blood Rune recipe uses a Blank Runestone and a blood focus item.[6][7][11]

Two materials gate a lot of this. Mithril is a rare Overworld ore found below y = -38 and unexposed to air, and you need a netherite pickaxe to mine it. Cinder Essence drops from Ancient Knights, which you wake by breaking armor piles in the nether.[7]

Unverified The sources don't explain any power, fluid or item-automation behavior for this mod, such as hopper or pipe interaction with its stations. They also include no config files for it in the pack. Test automation yourself before building around it.

How do you progress through Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks?

4 parts

The mod's in-game guide splits progression into early, mid and late game. Early game is exploring and looting, mid game starts once you reach nether-level resources, and late game means netherite, lots of basic resources and the Arcane Anvil. The pack's quests follow roughly the same path.[5][6][7]

Early game

Scrolls are your first taste of magic. You can consume one to cast its spell, but it's better to save it and inscribe it into a spell book at an Inscription Table, so you can use it over and over. Beginner spell books can be crafted from basic materials.[5]

The quests start the same way. The first one asks for a Flimsy Journal or an Ironbound Tome ("Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks" quest), and the next one asks for the Inscription Table ("Inscribing Spells" quest). There is also a separate quest for a Scroll ("Air Dash" quest).[8][10]

The Flimsy Journal is the first spell book the quests ask for.

The Inscription Table quest unlocks a wide branch of spell book quests: the Apprentice's Spell Book, Enchanted Spell Book, Grimoire of Evokation, Necronomicon, Villager Bible, Blaze Instruction Manual and Rotten Spell Book. The same branch also has quests for the Ruined Book and the Arcane Anvil.[8]

Not all of these are crafted. The Grimoire of Evokation drops from Evokers or Archevokers. The Villager Bible comes from building a reputation with villagers, the Blaze Instruction Manual from killing Blazes, and Rotten Spell Books from rotten places across the Overworld.[14][16]

Arcane Essence combined with leather armor makes Wandering Magician armor, an early source of extra max mana. The pack has a quest for the full set ("The Wandering Magician Armor Set" quest).[5][8]

Mid game

Once you have nether-level resources, the Scroll Forge opens up. It crafts scrolls from ink, paper and a focus: the ink sets the rarity (and so the level), and the focus sets the spell's school. The pack groups the inks and the Scroll Forge in one quest ("Crafting Spells" quest).[6][8]

The main hub quest asks for Arcane Essence, a Blank Runestone and Raw Mithril ("Arcane Discoveries" quest). It leads on to most of the rings and charms, the Arcane Cloth quest and the Graybeard Staff and Spellbreaker quests. Mithril is a rare Overworld ore found below y = -38 and unexposed to air, and you need a netherite pickaxe to mine it.[7][8][17]

The next step is "A Magical Trip To The Nether" quest, which asks for Cinder Essence and Hogskin. Hoglins drop Hogskin, and Ancient Knights drop Cinder Essence. You wake the knights by breaking armor piles in the Nether. This quest unlocks the Alchemist Cauldron ("The Alchemist Cauldron" quest), the Lesser Spell Slot Improvement ("Spell Slot Improvements" quest) and the empty Empty Upgrade Orb ("Upgrade Orbs" quest).[6][7][8]

School armor and runes

The Arcane Cloth quest ("Making The Good Stuff" quest) leads to the full school armor sets. Quests cover Cultist, Plagued, Electromancer, Scarecrow, Netherite Battlemage, Cryomancer, Shadow-Walker, Pyromancer, Priest and Archevoker. The Lightbringer Chestplate and Boots of Speed follow from the Priest and Archevoker sets.[8]

Runestones are what take armor further, so keep an eye out for them in magical structures. Class mages always drop a rune of their school. The pack has a quest for each school rune, such as the Fire Rune, Ice Rune and Blood Rune.[6][18]

Late game

The Arcane Anvil is the most powerful crafting station. It levels up scrolls, upgrades armor and spell books, and imbues weapons with spells. Some spells have several legendary levels, and you need the Anvil to reach them.[7][13]

The best craftable spell books start from the Ruined Book. The guide says it's found in Ancient Cities, and the pack also adds its own Ars Nouveau enchanting apparatus recipe for it. Dragonskin is dropped by the Ender Dragon. The recipes below show the Dragonskin Spell Book and the Vampiric Spell Book. The Ancient Codex has its own quest on the same branch.[7][8][11]

Upgrades are the final form of progression. By default, any armor and spell books can be upgraded. The pack has a quest for each orb, including Fire Upgrade Orb, Mana Upgrade Orb and Cooldown Upgrade Orb. The recipe below shows the exact in-pack version of one of them.[7][8]

The Wild Hunt chapter covers casting implements. It has quests for the Ice Staff, Rod o' Lightning, The Blood Staff, Artificer's Cane and Graybeard Staff. There's also a quest for the Cinderous Soulcaller with a kill task attached.[17]

How does Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks work with other mods?

4 parts

Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks doesn't live in its own bubble in this pack. Several of its items are used as ingredients in recipes from other mods, and most of those recipes are added by the pack itself. That makes the items useful well beyond spellcasting.[11]

Gate Pearls

The pack adds three different shaped recipes for the Gate Pearl, and each one is built around a different Iron's Spells item. One uses the Blood Rune, one uses the Nature Rune, and one uses the Holy Rune. The Holy Rune version also takes the Netherward Tincture and the Ruined Book.[11]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks?

    4 parts

Several quest chapters in this pack touch Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks. Every one of these quests is untitled in the quest file, so below I describe each by what it asks you to hand in. The main chapter is irons_spells_spellbooks. Smaller chunks sit in irons_gems_and_jewelery, the_wild_hunt and the_beginning.[8][10][17][18]

    The main chapter: irons_spells_spellbooks

The chapter starts with "Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks" quest, which accepts either the Flimsy Journal or the Ironbound Tome. It unlocks after a quest from another chapter. Next comes "Inscribing Spells" quest, where you submit the Inscription Table. Most of the chapter branches off that quest.[8]

    Jewelry, armor and orbs

A second hub is "Arcane Discoveries" quest, which needs Arcane Essence, a Blank Runestone and Raw Mithril. It also unlocks after a quest from another chapter, so the source doesn't show how it connects to the inscription table branch. Many quests hang off it.[8]

    irons_gems_and_jewelery

This chapter is about materials and runes. "Arcane Banding" quest asks for an Arcane Ingot and has no prerequisite. "Mithril Banding" quest wants a Mithril Ingot, "Pyrium Banding" quest a Pyrium Ingot and "Divine Pearl" quest a Divine Pearl. Each of these unlocks after a quest I can't identify from the sources.[18]

The rune quests all unlock after the same shared quest. They ask for the Fire Rune ("Fire Rune" quest), Ice Rune ("Ice Rune" quest), Lightning Rune ("Lightning Rune" quest), Holy Rune ("Holy Rune" quest), Ender Rune ("Ender Rune" quest), Blood Rune ("Blood Rune" quest), Evocation Rune ("Evocation Rune" quest), Nature Rune ("Nature Rune" quest), Arcane Rune ("Arcane Rune" quest), Recovery Rune ("Recovery Rune" quest) and Protective Rune ("Protective Rune" quest).[18]

    the_wild_hunt and the_beginning

In the_wild_hunt, some staff and rod quests have no prerequisite: "Ice Staff" quest (Ice Staff), "Rod 'o Lightning" quest (Rod o' Lightning) and "The Blood Staff" quest (The Blood Staff). "Artificer's Cane" quest asks for the Artificer's Cane after the inscription table quest. "Spellbreaker" quest (Spellbreaker) and "Graybeard Staff" quest (Graybeard Staff) unlock after the arcane essence hub quest.[8][17]

"Defeat the Echo of Flame" quest asks for the Cinderous Soulcaller and also has a kill task. It unlocks after a quest I can't identify. The sources don't say what you have to kill.[17]

In the_beginning, "Air Dash" quest asks for a Scroll. It unlocks after the same quest that opens the first spell book quest.[8][10]
