What is Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks?
2 parts
Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide
Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks is an RPG-inspired spellcasting mod. You fight dangerous wizards, raid structures, delve through dungeons, collect resources and hunt down powerful magical items. The pack ships version 1.21.1-3.16.3 of the mod.[1][2]
It's for you if you want a dedicated mage playstyle. Casting implements are right-clicked to cast your active spell, and most also give passive benefits. Every spell belongs to a school of magic, so you can master a single school with matching gear or mix and match.[3][4]
How progression flows
- Early game is about exploring and looting. Scrolls are your first taste of magic. Save them and inscribe them into a spell book at the Inscription Table, so you can cast the spell again and again. Beginner spell books can be crafted from basic materials.[5]
- Mid game starts once you reach nether-level resources. That unlocks the Scroll Forge, which crafts scrolls from ink, paper and a focus. The ink sets the rarity (and so the level), and the focus sets the school. Intermediate spell books also become craftable from nether resources, and you start making stronger armor from Arcane Cloth.[6]
- Late game is reached with netherite and vast quantities of basic resources, and it runs on the Arcane Anvil. This is the most powerful crafting station. It levels up scrolls, upgrades armor and spell books, and imbues weapons with spells. Upgrades are the final form of progression.[7]
Following it with quests
The pack has a quest chapter for this mod that mirrors that flow. It starts with a Flimsy Journal or Ironbound Tome in a quest in "?", then the Inscription Table in a quest in "?". From there it branches into more spell books, ink with the Scroll Forge in a quest in "?", and the Arcane Anvil in a quest in "?".[8]
Another branch, starting at a quest in "?", asks for Arcane Essence, Blank Runestone and Raw Mithril. It leads on to rings, Arcane Cloth, armor sets and upgrade items.[8]
How do you get started with Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks?
2 parts
Welcome to Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks! Your first steps are simple: get a scroll, make a beginner spell book, and make an Inscription Table so you can put the scroll in the book. Here is the order I'd go in.[1][5]
Your first steps, in order
- Find an Scroll. Scrolls are your first taste of magic, and they can be found in chests, looted from mobs, or crafted. The pack's first quest in this area is a quest in "?".[5][9][10]
- Craft a beginner spell book. The Flimsy Journal is the first one, and the a quest in "?" quest accepts either it or the Ironbound Tome. Beginner books can be made from basic materials, and each higher tier adds spell slots and often extra bonuses.[5][11][12]
- Make an Inscription Table (a quest in "?"). A spell book is only usable once you inscribe spells into it at this table using scrolls.[5][12]
- Inscribe your scroll into the book instead of burning it. A scroll cast on its own is used up, while an inscribed spell can be used again and again. If you change your mind, you can take the scroll back out, but that uninscribes the spell.[5][9]

What to do next
Once the table is down, the quests open up several branches. The next book up the ladder is the Apprentice's Spell Book (a quest in "?"), so check its recipe below. Intermediate books use nether resources, and Hogskin comes from Hoglins.[6][11][12]

Start collecting Arcane Essence too. It is used for Wandering Magician armor, an early source of extra max mana (a quest in "?"). You'll need a lot of it later, and the way to get it is raiding magical structures.[5][6][12]
When you reach nether-level resources, the Scroll Forge lets you craft your own scrolls from ink, paper and a focus. The ink sets the rarity (and so the level), and the focus sets the school. The pack groups inks and the Scroll Forge in one quest, a quest in "?".[6][12]
The Arcane Anvil is the most powerful crafting station. It levels up scrolls, upgrades armor and spell books, and imbues weapons with spells. The guide places it in the late game, though the pack's quest for it (a quest in "?") unlocks right after the Inscription Table.[7][9][12]

How does Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks work?
7 parts
Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks is an RPG-inspired spellcasting mod, so its "machines" are crafting stations that turn scrolls, ink, runes and spell books into stronger gear. This section walks through how those stations connect to each other.[1]
Unverified The sources I was given do not describe any power, fluid or item-automation systems for this mod, and no config files for it are available. I have left those topics out rather than guess.
Scrolls and the Inscription Table
Each scroll holds a spell with a level, much like an enchanted book. You can find scrolls in chests, loot them from mobs, or craft them.[9]
You can consume a scroll on its own to cast its spell. That skips the mana cost and the cooldown, but the scroll is used up. Most of the time you will want to inscribe scrolls into a spell book instead, so you can cast the spell again and again.[5][9]
Inscribing happens at the Inscription Table. You can get a scroll back out of a spell book, but doing so uninscribes that spell.[5]
Scroll Forge, ink and schools
Once you reach nether-level resources, you unlock the Scroll Forge. It crafts scrolls from ink, paper and a focus. The ink decides the rarity, and therefore the level. The focus decides the spell's school.[6]
Ink has to match the spell. Common ink only crafts the lowest level of spells, and if a spell's lowest level is above common, common ink can't make it. The same rule applies to every other ink rarity. Some spells have several legendary levels, and you need the Arcane Anvil to reach those.[13]
Every school has its own focus item:[4]
- Fire uses a Blaze Rod.[4]
- Ice uses Frozen Bones.[4]
- Lightning uses a Bottle o' Lightning.[4]
- Holy uses the Divine Pearl.[4]
- Ender uses an Ender Pearl.[4]
- Blood uses a Blood Vial.[4]
- Evocation uses an Emerald.[4]
- Nature uses a Poisonous Potato.[4]
- Eldritch can't be crafted at first. You have to restore an Eldritch manuscript with the help of an echo shard and consume it to learn one spell. After that, the Echo Shard is the focus for that spell.[4]
Arcane Anvil
The Arcane Anvil is the most powerful crafting station in the mod. You use it to level up scrolls, upgrade armor and spell books, and imbue weapons with spells. The in-game guide treats it as the centrepiece of the late game.[7]
To level up a scroll, combine it with ink of the rarity for its next level.[9]
Unique spell books come with locked spells that you can't remove or edit. You can still improve them by combining the book in the Arcane Anvil with a higher-level scroll of the same spell.[14]

Alchemist Cauldron
The Alchemist Cauldron has two jobs in the sources. You can recycle scrolls in it to turn them into more useful spells. It can also cook mobs placed inside it for blood, which is how you get a Blood Vial. A vanilla cauldron with a campfire underneath does the blood job too.[9][15]

Upgrade orbs
Upgrades are the final step of progression. By default, any armor and any spell book can be upgraded. An attribute-specific orb is made from a base Empty Upgrade Orb plus runes of the attribute you want. The in-game guide gives a rune count, but the pack's recipe is what counts, so check the recipe below.[7][16]

Recipe id: irons_spellbooks:blood_upgrade_orb
Blood is one example. Other attribute orbs, like the Cooldown Upgrade Orb, follow the same pattern with their own rune.
School armor and mana
School armor is made from Arcane Cloth and the rune of a particular school. The Archevoker set, for example, uses the Evocation Rune. Runestones turn up in magical structures, and class mages always drop a rune of their school.[6][7][16]

For an early boost to max mana, combine Arcane Essence with leather armor to craft Wandering Magician armor.[5]
A pack-changed recipe
The pack has changed the recipe for the Amulet of Concentration, so don't rely on what you remember from the base mod. The amulet makes long casts uninterruptible.[15][16]

How do you progress through Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks?
5 parts
The mod's own in-game guide splits progression into early game, mid game and late game, and the pack's quest chapter follows the same flow. Here is the path, with the quests and in-pack recipes for each stage.[5][6][7][12][17]
Early game: scrolls, journals and the Inscription Table
Early on you explore and loot. Scrolls are your first taste of magic. You can burn one to cast its spell, but it's better to inscribe it into a spell book at an Inscription Table so you can reuse it. The pack has a quest for the Scroll (a quest in "?").[5][10]
Beginner spell books can be crafted with basic materials. The first quest in the mod chapter, a quest in "?", accepts either the Flimsy Journal or the Ironbound Tome. It leads to the Inscription Table quest, a quest in "?".[5][12]

The Inscription Table quest opens up most of the chapter. Quests for the Apprentice's Spell Book, Enchanted Spell Book, Arcane Anvil, the ink and Scroll Forge quest, and the Ruined Book all unlock after it. So do the looted books: Grimoire of Evokation, Villager Bible, Blaze Instruction Manual, Rotten Spell Book and Necronomicon.[12]
Each further spell book tier increases the slot count and often adds extra bonuses.[11]
Mid game: nether resources and the Scroll Forge
Once you reach nether-level resources, the Scroll Forge unlocks. It crafts scrolls from ink, paper and a focus. The ink sets the rarity (and so the level), and the focus sets the school. Intermediate spell books are also crafted with nether resources, and hogskin drops from Hoglins. The quest a quest in "?" asks for Cinder Essence and Hogskin, and it leads on to the Alchemist Cauldron, the Empty Upgrade Orb and the Lesser Spell Slot Improvement.[6][12]
Higher rarity inks are brewed in the Alchemist Cauldron in this pack, from common up through uncommon, rare and epic to legendary. The higher inks also drop from magic treasure and spellcasting mobs.[13][16]

Armor is the other mid-game goal. Stronger gear is built from Arcane Cloth, which needs lots of Arcane Essence from raiding magic structures. Keep an eye out for runestones there too. Class mages always drop a rune of their school.[6]
The pack's quest a quest in "?" asks for arcane essence, a Blank Runestone and Raw Mithril. It unlocks the Arcane Cloth quest a quest in "?", plus the early armor and accessory quests. Those include the Wandering Magician armor (a quest in "?"), the Ring of Mana (a quest in "?"), the Ring of Recovery (a quest in "?") and the Ring of Expediency (a quest in "?").[12]
One thing to watch: the pack changed the recipe for the Amulet of Concentration, so don't rely on the mod's default.[16]

School armor
School armor is made from arcane cloth plus a rune of the matching school. Each set has its own quest, all unlocked after the Arcane Cloth quest:[7][12]
- Cryomancer (a quest in "?"), Pyromancer (a quest in "?") and Electromancer (a quest in "?").[12]
- Cultist (a quest in "?"), Plagued (a quest in "?") and Scarecrow (a quest in "?").[12]
- Priest (a quest in "?"), which leads to the Lightbringer Chestplate (a quest in "?").[12]
- Archevoker (a quest in "?"), which leads to the Boots of Speed (a quest in "?").[12]
- Shadow-Walker (a quest in "?") and Netherite Battlemage (a quest in "?").[12]

Late game: the Arcane Anvil and upgrades
Late game starts when you get netherite and large amounts of basic resources, and it runs on the Arcane Anvil. It's the most powerful crafting station. Use it to level up scrolls, upgrade armor and spell books, and imbue weapons with spells. Some spells have several legendary levels, and you need the anvil to reach them.[7][13]

The best craftable spell books need a Ruined Book. The mod's guide says it's found in Ancient Cities, but the pack also adds its own Ars Nouveau Enchanting Apparatus recipe for it. The quest a quest in "?" leads to the Dragonskin Spell Book (a quest in "?"), the Vampiric Spell Book (a quest in "?") and the Ancient Codex (a quest in "?"). Dragonskin is dropped by the Ender Dragon.[7][12][16]
Added by the pack.

Upgrades are the final form of progression. The pack's upgrade orb quests (a quest in "?" and everything after it) cover orbs for fire, ice, lightning, holy, ender, blood, evocation, nature, mana, cooldown and protection. A specific orb is made from an empty orb plus runes of the matching attribute. By default, any armor and spell books can be upgraded.[7][12][16]

Staffs and other casting implements
Casting implements are used with a right-click to cast your active spell. The pack tracks several in a separate chapter: the Ice Staff, Rod o' Lightning, The Blood Staff, Cinderous Soulcaller (which also has a kill task), Artificer's Cane, Spellbreaker and Graybeard Staff.[3][18]
Unverified The mod's guide says mithril is a rare Overworld ore found below y = -38, unexposed to air, and that it needs a netherite pickaxe. This isn't confirmed for this pack, so check it in-game before planning a mining trip.
How does Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks work with other mods?
6 parts
Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks doesn't live in its own bubble in this pack. Its items show up in recipes from other mods, and the pack adds several of those recipes itself. Here's what the recipe data confirms.[16]
Create: Elemental Arcanite
The pack adds a Create sequenced assembly for Elemental Arcanite. It pulls in Iron's items like Arcane Essence and Cinder Essence, along with items from Integrated Dynamics and Malum, so you'll be gathering from several mods.[16]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks?
5 parts
The mod's quests are mostly in one chapter, with a few extras in two others. The quests have no titles in the pack files, so they show up by ID. Each one asks you to get a specific item from the mod.[10][12][18]
The Beginning
The first appearance of the mod is quest a quest in "?" in the Beginning chapter, which asks for a Scroll. It follows an earlier quest that isn't in the sources I have.[10]
Main chapter: spellbooks and the Inscription Table
The mod's own chapter starts with a quest in "?", which accepts either a Flimsy Journal or an Ironbound Tome. Next comes a quest in "?", the Inscription Table, and that quest is the hub for most of the spellbook quests.[12]
Once you have the table, these quests open up:[12]
- a quest in "?" asks for both the Ironbound Tome and the Flimsy Journal.[12]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Apprentice's Spell Book, a quest in "?" for the Enchanted Spell Book and a quest in "?" for the Grimoire of Evokation.[12]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Necronomicon, a quest in "?" for the Villager Bible and a quest in "?" for the Blaze Instruction Manual.[12]
- a quest in "?" asks for any one of the inks (from Common Ink up to Legendary Ink) plus the Scroll Forge. a quest in "?" asks for the Arcane Anvil.[12]
- a quest in "?" asks for a Ruined Book. It leads to a quest in "?" (Dragonskin Spell Book), a quest in "?" (Vampiric Spell Book) and a quest in "?" (Ancient Codex).[12]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Rotten Spell Book. It leads to a quest in "?", the Druidic Tome.[12]
Main chapter: materials, accessories and armor
A second branch starts at a quest in "?", which asks for Arcane Essence, a Blank Runestone and Raw Mithril. It follows a quest that isn't in the sources I have, so what unlocks it is unverified.[12]
- Accessory quests: a quest in "?" (Ring of Mana), a quest in "?" (Ring of Expediency), a quest in "?" (Ring of Recovery), a quest in "?" (Amulet of Concentration) and a quest in "?" (Conjurer's Talisman).[12]
- Ward and utility quests: a quest in "?" (Fireward Ring), a quest in "?" (Frostward Ring), a quest in "?" (Poisonward Ring), a quest in "?" (Emerald Stoneplate Ring), a quest in "?" (Ring of Expulsion), a quest in "?" (Amethyst Resonance Charm) and a quest in "?" (Heavy Chain).[12]
- a quest in "?" asks for the full Wandering Magician set, starting with the Wandering Magician Hood.[12]
- a quest in "?" asks for Arcane Cloth. It leads to the armor-set quests: Cultist (a quest in "?"), Plagued (a quest in "?"), Electromancer (a quest in "?"), Scarecrow (a quest in "?"), Netherite Battlemage (a quest in "?"), Cryomancer (a quest in "?"), Shadow-Walker (a quest in "?"), Pyromancer (a quest in "?"), Priest (a quest in "?") and Archevoker (a quest in "?"). Each one asks for all four pieces of the set.[12]
- Two armor quests lead to one more item each: a quest in "?" asks for the Lightbringer Chestplate after the Priest set, and a quest in "?" asks for the Boots of Speed after the Archevoker set.[12]
Main chapter: upgrades
a quest in "?" asks for Cinder Essence and Hogskin, and it follows the arcane essence quest. After it come a quest in "?" for the Alchemist Cauldron, a quest in "?" for the Lesser Spell Slot Improvement, and a quest in "?" for the Empty Upgrade Orb.[12]
The Empty Upgrade Orb quest unlocks one quest per upgrade orb: Fire Upgrade Orb, Ice Upgrade Orb, Lightning Upgrade Orb, Holy Upgrade Orb, Ender Upgrade Orb, Blood Upgrade Orb, Evocation Upgrade Orb, Nature Upgrade Orb, Mana Upgrade Orb, Cooldown Upgrade Orb and Protection Upgrade Orb.[12]
The Wild Hunt
This chapter holds the mod's staffs and weapons. Three quests have no prerequisite listed: a quest in "?" for the Ice Staff, a quest in "?" for the Rod o' Lightning and a quest in "?" for the The Blood Staff.[18]
Three more connect back to the main chapter. a quest in "?" asks for the Artificer's Cane after the Inscription Table quest. a quest in "?" asks for the Spellbreaker and a quest in "?" for the Graybeard Staff, and both follow the arcane essence quest.[12][18]
a quest in "?" asks for the Cinderous Soulcaller and also has a kill task. It follows a quest that isn't in the sources I have.[18]
Unverified The quests have no titles or descriptions in the sources, so their rewards, whether the item tasks need crafting or just having the item, and the target of the kill task are unconfirmed.
