What is The Undergarden?

3 parts

The Undergarden adds a dark, subterranean dimension that sits deep below the bedrock of the Overworld. The plants down there have adapted to life without sunlight and grow anywhere regardless of light level, and the creatures that live there are plagued by the invasive Rotspawn, monsters from a chaotic, mysterious realm.[1]

This pack ships version 0.8.22 of the mod, and it has been part of the pack since an early build.[2]

What you get

  • A whole new dimension to explore, build, and survive in, spread across 15 biomes.[1]
  • Over 10 unique entities, plus 4 special potion effects and 1 dungeon.[1]
  • Ores that have special properties when made into tools and weapons.[1]
  • Over 10 music tracks and over 10 advancements to guide your journey.[1]

Getting in

Entry is portal-based. You craft a Catalyst, build a frame shaped like a Nether portal out of Stone Bricks or Deepslate Bricks, then right-click the inner bottom of the frame with the Catalyst to light it. Bricks derived from the Undergarden itself work for the frame too.[1]

Where it fits in progression

The Undergarden is mainly a mid-game gear detour in this pack. Its metals show up as accepted options across the pack's basic tools quest chapter, so a trip down there can tick off several tool and weapon milestones without touching any other mod.[3]

Tip: If you are working through the basic tools chapter, plan one Undergarden expedition and gather cloggrum, froststeel, forgotten and utherium materials in a single run. Those four families cover six quests between them.[3]

The mod is not on the ATM Star quest path in this pack, so treat it as optional gear and exploration content rather than a required step.[3]

How do you get started with The Undergarden?

4 parts

The Undergarden is a dark, subterranean dimension that sits deep below the bedrock of the Overworld, with flora that grows without light, strange creatures, and invasive Rotspawn monsters causing trouble everywhere. Everything you need for your first trip is craftable in the Overworld, so let's go in order.[1]

Step one: craft a Catalyst

The Catalyst is your key to the dimension, and it's the one recipe here the pack has changed from the mod default, so check the grid below rather than any tutorial you've seen elsewhere.[1][4]

Step two: build and light the portal

  1. Build a frame in the shape of a Nether portal out of Stone Bricks or Deepslate Bricks.[1]
  2. Right click the inner bottom of the frame with the Catalyst to activate it.[1]
  3. Later on you can also use bricks derived from the Undergarden itself for the frame, which is handy if you want a return portal built from local stone.[1]

Step three: get Cloggrum gear

Cloggrum is your first Undergarden metal and the base of the whole progression, since every Forgotten tool is an upgraded Cloggrum tool. Make a pickaxe and a sword first so you can mine the dimension's ores and fight back.[4][5]

A full suit of Cloggrum armor is worth the ingots too. The boots in particular stop Scintling Goo from slowing you down, which makes exploring a lot less annoying.[5]

If you want a light source that doesn't cost you torches in every pocket, the Cloggrum Lantern is cheap once you have a few nuggets.[4]

Tip: The pack's basic tools quests accept Undergarden gear directly: a Cloggrum Pickaxe or Froststeel Pickaxe completes a quest in "?", and a Cloggrum Sword or Forgotten Sword completes a quest in "?". So your starter kit pays for itself in quest rewards.[3]

Step four: plan your upgrades

Once Cloggrum is sorted, there are three directions to aim for. Froststeel tools and armor are straight crafts from Froststeel Ingots, and a Froststeel Sword also ticks off a quest in "?".[3][4]

Utherium gear is crafted from Utherium Crystals, and Utherium weapons deal 1.5x damage to Rotspawn, which is exactly what you want given how common they are down there. The Utherium Sword and Utherium Pickaxe also complete a quest in "?" and a quest in "?".[3][4][5]

Forgotten gear is the top tier and is made at a smithing table by upgrading a Cloggrum tool or weapon with a Forgotten Ingot and the Forgotten upgrade template. Forgotten tools mine Undergarden blocks 1.5x as fast, and Forgotten weapons deal 1.5x damage to non-boss Undergarden mobs. A Forgotten Pickaxe also finishes a quest in "?".[3][4][5]

How does The Undergarden work?

6 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.6 guide

The Undergarden is a dimension mod rather than a tech mod: there are no machines, no power network and no fluid or item pipes to wire up here. Its systems are a new world to explore, the ores and gear you bring out of it, and a handful of status effects that change how fights play out. The feature list is a whole dimension, over 10 unique entities, 15 biomes, ores with special properties when made into tools and weapons, over 10 music tracks, over 10 advancements, 4 special potion effects and 1 dungeon.[1]

Getting there: the Catalyst and the portal

Everything starts with the Catalyst. In this pack the Catalyst recipe has been changed from the mod default, so check the panel below rather than going from memory or an old video.[1][6]

  1. Craft the Catalyst.[1][6]
  2. Build a frame in the shape of a Nether portal out of Stone Bricks or Deepslate Bricks.[1]
  3. Right click the inner bottom of the frame with the Catalyst to light it.[1]
Tip: You can also build the frame from bricks derived from the Undergarden itself, which is handy once you are already down there and want a return portal that matches the scenery.[1]

The Undergarden itself sits deep underground, below the bedrock of the Overworld. Its plants have adapted to grow anywhere without light, and the native creatures share the place with the invasive Rotspawn, monsters that come from a separate chaotic realm.[1]

Ores and the gear progression

The core progression loop is ore to gear to better gear. Undergarden ores have special properties once you turn them into tools and weapons, so the metal you pick matters more than a raw stat line would suggest.[1]

Cloggrum is the entry metal and covers the full kit: sword, axe, pickaxe, shovel, hoe, shield, the four armour pieces and decorative blocks. Cloggrum Boots carry their own perk, since Scintling Goo does not slow you down while you are wearing them.[5][6]

Recipe id: undergarden:cloggrum_pickaxe

Cloggrum storage works the way you would expect from a vanilla metal, with recipes both ways between Cloggrum Nugget, Cloggrum Ingot and Block of Cloggrum, so nothing you smelt is ever stuck in the wrong form.[6]

The next tier is Forgotten gear, and it is a smithing upgrade rather than a fresh craft. The Forgotten upgrade template takes a cloggrum weapon or tool in its base slot, and Forgotten Ingots are forged from the nuggets dropped by Forgotten Guardians. Working through it unlocks all 6 Forgotten tools.[5]

The special properties show up as tooltips on the finished gear. Forgotten tools mine Undergarden blocks 1.5x as fast, Forgotten weapons deal 1.5x damage to non-boss Undergarden mobs, and Utherium weapons deal 1.5x damage to Rotspawn. There is also a Cloggrum Battleaxe, which you get from a Forgotten that is carrying one, and it can be upgraded with a Forgotten Ingot like the rest.[5]

Status effects

The mod adds its own effects, and several of them are things monsters and traps will put on you rather than buffs you brew.[1][5]

  • Brittleness: the higher the victim's armour value, the more damage they take, and the damage scales with the potion level. Heavy armour is a liability here.[5]
  • Virulence: similar to poison, but does more damage at a slower rate.[5]
  • Virulent Resistance: grants immunity to Virulence and suppresses its damage.[5]
  • Featherweight: the victim receives increased knockback when damaged, scaling with the potion level.[5]
  • Chilly: slows the victim down and makes them visually shake.[5]
  • Gooey: Scintling Goo is constantly placed under the victim's feet.[5]

The Slingshot

The Slingshot is the mod's ranged system and it runs on ammo you pick up around the dimension. Anything usable in it is labelled as Slingshot ammo on the item tooltip, so you can tell at a glance what is worth carrying. Pebbles are the basic shot, but you can also load Scintling Goo Balls to annoy a target, Rotten Blisterberries, and even a Gronglet.[5]

It has three enchantments of its own. Longevity increases the Slingshot's max durability, Ricochet makes fired projectiles bounce off block surfaces, and Self Sling fires you instead of your ammo, which requires you to be standing on the ground.[5]

Tip: There is an advancement for dealing 20 or more damage with a single pebble, so the Slingshot clearly scales further than it first looks. Experiment with ammo and enchantment combinations.[5]

Other systems worth knowing

  • Stoneborn will trade with you, so they are your in-dimension shop.[5]
  • The Shard Torch is a torch that damages Rotspawn in its vicinity, which makes it a defensive block as much as a light source.[5]
  • You can create a Forgotten Minion using a Forgotten Block and a Carved Gloomgourd, the same way you would build a golem.[5]
  • Gloomgourds grow from seeds you plant, so they are a renewable farm crop.[5]
  • Gwiblings are caught with a bucket rather than fought.[5]
  • The Catacombs are the dimension's dungeon, and the Forgotten Guardian you need for Forgotten Ingots is the fight that gates the upgrade tier.[1][5]

Crafting odds and ends

Beyond gear, the pack's recipe set covers a full decorative and utility line: brick slabs and stairs, chiseled variants of depthrock, shiverstone and tremblecrust bricks made from their slabs, cloggrum tiles, bars and a lantern, a mogmoss rug, and a depthrock bed. Deepsoil converts both ways between its normal and coarse forms, just like dirt.[6]

Two combat consumables chain into each other: the Blisterbomb is built from Rotten Blisterberry and Twistytwig, and feeding a Blisterbomb into a Gloomgourd gives you a Boomgourd.[6]

How do you progress through The Undergarden?

5 parts

The pack's quests only touch The Undergarden through the basic tools chapter. They ask for pickaxes and swords from several mods, and the Undergarden metals are some of the accepted answers. So the path below follows those quests and the in-pack recipes for each tool tier.[3]

Cloggrum

Cloggrum is the entry tier in the quest chapter. Cloggrum Pickaxe counts toward one of the tasks in a quest in "?", and Cloggrum Sword is one accepted answer for a quest in "?". Both are crafted from Cloggrum Ingots and a wooden rod.[3][4]

The pack also has Cloggrum recipes for an axe, shovel, hoe, shield and a full armor set. Those are plain crafting recipes from the mod, with no pack changes shown.[4]

Froststeel

Froststeel Pickaxe is its own task in a quest in "?", next to the Cloggrum pickaxe. Froststeel Sword is one of the accepted swords in a quest in "?". Both are crafted from Froststeel Ingots and a wooden rod.[3][4]

Forgotten

The Forgotten tools are not crafted from scratch. In this pack they are smithing upgrades of the matching Cloggrum tool, so you need to make Cloggrum first. Forgotten Sword is accepted by a quest in "?", and Forgotten Pickaxe is accepted by a quest in "?".[3][4]

How does The Undergarden work with other mods?

3 parts

The Undergarden connects to other mods in this pack through a few recipes and some quest alternatives. Wood processing is the most useful link. The others are Productive Bees recipes and a set of tool quests that accept gear from several mods.[3][4]

Sawing Undergarden wood

The pack adds Mekanism sawing recipes for three Undergarden woods: Grongle, Smogstem and Wigglewood. Each one turns the matching logs into planks and also gives you Sawdust. These are pack-added recipes, not Mekanism defaults.[4]

The Smogstem and Wigglewood versions work the same way.

The pack also adds Productive Trees sawmill recipes for the same three woods. They produce Grongle Planks, Smogstem Planks and Wigglewood Planks, and they use Sawdust.[4]

Productive Bees

Productive Bees has centrifuge recipes for Undergarden materials, and they come from the mod itself rather than the pack. The recipes are named for cloggrum, forgotten, froststeel, regalium and utheric honeycombs. Each gives Wax plus one Undergarden item. The dump lists no item inputs for them, so check the recipe viewer for exactly what goes in.[4]

There is also a Productive Bees bee conversion recipe that uses the Undergarden Music Disc and results in the regalium bee.[4]

    Tool quests

The "basic_tools" quest chapter mixes Undergarden gear with tools from Eternal Starlight, Deeper and Darker and Aquaculture. Several quests accept tools from more than one mod.[3]

Tip: Most of these quests list other mods' tools as alternatives, so you can finish them with Undergarden gear or with the other mods' tools.[3]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use The Undergarden?

    2 parts

In this pack, The Undergarden shows up in one quest chapter, "basic_tools". All six quests there are about tool tiers, and none of them have a title. They are listed below by their quest ID.[3]

Most of these quests are shared with other dimension mods. You can usually hand in a tool from a different mod instead of the Undergarden one.[3]

    Pickaxe quests

    Sword quests

Tip: If you're set on Undergarden gear, the Utherium sword is the only one you must craft for its quest. The other five quests accept another mod's tool, so you can finish them with whichever mod you're exploring.[3]

Unverified The quest data I have doesn't show the order of these quests, their dependencies or their rewards, so I can't say which to do first. Check the in-game quest book for that.

Which The Undergarden config options matter?

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.6 guide

Unverified This pack doesn't ship a config file for The Undergarden, so there are no pack-specific values to tune here: nothing has been changed from the mod's own defaults, and there's no file to edit in the pack's config folder.

That means the dimension behaves as the mod ships it: the biomes, mobs, ores and dungeon are all there with no pack-side adjustments you need to know about before you dive in.[1]

Tip: If you're looking for how to actually get down there, skip ahead to the portal section, you activate a Nether-portal-shaped frame of Stone Bricks or Deepslate Bricks with a Catalyst rather than changing any settings.[1]

What changed in The Undergarden between versions?

    2 parts

All the Mods 10 1.6 includes The Undergarden 0.8.22, built for 1.21.1. The mod was already in the pack by All the Mods 10 0.42 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the pack.[2]

0.8.22 (the version in this pack)

    • Forgotten are now considered undead.[7]
    • There is a special dimension transition screen when you travel to the Undergarden.[7]
    • Undergarden food items were added to the c:foods tag.[7]
    • Fixed Underbeans, Blisterberries and Ditchbulbs not growing. If they ever refused to grow for you on an older version, this is the fix.[7]

    0.8.21

    • Fixed the Undergarden portal effect messing with other portals.[8]

Unverified No pack changelog entries for The Undergarden were available, so any changes the pack itself made to this mod across its releases are unverified.
