What is The Undergarden?

2 parts

The Undergarden adds a dark underground dimension that sits deep below the Overworld's bedrock. Plants there have adapted to the darkness and grow anywhere, with no light needed. The locals are strange creatures, and they are plagued by the Rotspawn, invasive monsters from a chaotic, mysterious realm. If you enjoy exploring a whole new world, building in it and surviving whatever lives there, this mod is for you.[1]

  • 15 biomes to explore, plus 1 dungeon.[1]
  • Over 10 unique entities and over 10 music tracks.[1]
  • Ores with special properties when you turn them into tools and weapons.[1]
  • 4 special potion effects, and over 10 advancements to guide you along the way.[1]

Getting there

Your ticket in is the Catalyst. Build a frame shaped like a Nether portal from Stone Bricks or Deepslate Bricks, then right-click the inner bottom of the frame with the Catalyst to light it. Once you've been down there, bricks made from Undergarden materials work for the frame too.[1]

In the pack, the Undergarden quest chapter starts with a quest in "?", which asks you to get the Catalyst. That makes it the natural first goal.[2]

Where it fits in All the Mods 10

All the Mods 10 4.5 ships The Undergarden 0.9.3 for Minecraft 1.21.1.[3]

The pack's Undergarden chapter works like a tour of the dimension. It has quests for the local food and plants, such as Underbeans, Blisterberry and Gloomgourd, plus saplings, mushrooms and the Slingshot. It also covers the four metals: Cloggrum Ingot, Froststeel Ingot, Utherium Crystal and Forgotten Ingot, each followed by quests for its tools or armor.[2]

Those materials also count toward the pack's general progression. The basic armor chapter includes quests for Cloggrum, Froststeel and Utherium armor sets. It also asks for Regalium Crystal and the Undergarden ingots and crystals.[4]

In the basic tools chapter, Undergarden gear is one option among several mods. For example, a quest in "?" accepts a Froststeel or Cloggrum pickaxe, and a quest in "?" accepts a Forgotten or Cloggrum sword. So a trip underground can knock out several of those quests at once.[5]

How do you get started with The Undergarden?

4 parts

The Undergarden is a dark world deep below the bedrock of the Overworld. Its plants grow without light, and it is overrun by hostile monsters called Rotspawn. Your first job is getting there, and that starts with one item: the Catalyst. The Undergarden quest chapter has a quest for it, a quest in "?".[1][2]

Step 1: Craft the Catalyst and open the portal

This pack changed the Catalyst recipe, so don't follow the mod's default recipe from outside guides. Use the in-pack version below.[6]

  2. Right-click the inner bottom of the frame with the Catalyst to light the portal.[1]

Step 2: Cloggrum, your first metal

Once you're through, mine your first Undergarden ore. The Cloggrum Ingot quest, a quest in "?", leads to the quests for the tools, the armor, and the battleaxe and shield. In this pack, the smelting and blasting recipes for cloggrum ore and raw cloggrum are changed, so they accept any item with the matching cloggrum tag.[2][6][7]

How does The Undergarden work?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Here's the honest picture first: the sources I have for The Undergarden don't describe any machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or automation. This mod is about a dimension to explore, so its systems are the portal, the gear progression, the slingshot and the status effects. Those are what this section covers.[1][8]

Getting in: the Catalyst and the portal

The Undergarden is a dark world deep below the bedrock of the Overworld. To get in, you first craft a Catalyst. Here's the in-pack recipe:[1][9]

CatalystChanged by the pack

Next, build a frame in the shape of a Nether portal out of Stone Bricks or Deepslate Bricks. Bricks derived from the Undergarden work too. Then right-click the inner bottom of the frame with the Catalyst to activate the portal.[1]

Cloggrum and Forgotten gear

The pack has changed a lot of the Cloggrum recipes: the axe, hoe, bars, block, block-to-ingot, ingot-to-nugget, helmet, chestplate, boots and lantern all show up as changed by the pack. The Cloggrum Bucket is the exception and stays as the mod made it. The sources don't say exactly what changed, so check the recipe viewer for the real in-pack versions.[9]

Cloggrum BootsChanged by the pack

Crafting Shaped

4 × any cloggrum ingot

Recipe id: undergarden:cloggrum_boots

This recipe is changed by the pack. The boots also stop Scintling Goo from slowing you down while worn.

The next step up is Forgotten gear. You forge a Forgotten Ingot from a Forgotten Guardian's nuggets, then use it to upgrade Cloggrum tools and weapons. The smithing template slot takes a Cloggrum weapon or tool. There are 6 Forgotten tools to collect in total.[8]

  • Forgotten tools mine Undergarden blocks 1.5x as fast.[8]
  • Forgotten weapons deal 1.5x damage to non-boss Undergarden mobs.[8]
  • Utherium weapons deal 1.5x damage to Rotspawn.[8]

The Slingshot

The Slingshot fires pebbles, and items with the Slingshot ammo tooltip can be loaded into it. The advancements mention Scintling Goo Balls, Gronglets and Rotten Blisterberries as things you can shoot. These enchantments are specific to it:[8]

  • Longevity increases the Slingshot's max durability.[8]
  • Ricochet makes projectiles bounce off block surfaces.[8]
  • Self Sling makes the Slingshot fire you instead of ammo, and you have to be on the ground.[8]

Explosives from the gourd patch

The pack has recipes for the Blisterbomb and the Boomgourd, which builds on the Blisterbomb. Here are both in-pack recipes:[9]

Rotspawn, infection and status effects

The Undergarden is plagued by Rotspawn, monsters that come from a chaotic, mysterious realm. You can also contract the Utheric Infection, and the game warns you not to let it get out of control. A Shard Torch damages Rotspawn near it.[1][8]

  • Purity reduces the amount of Utheric Infection an entity has per second, and the amount removed scales with potion level.[8]
  • Virulence is similar to poison but does more damage at a slower rate. Virulent Resistance suppresses it and grants immunity.[8]
  • Brittleness makes the victim take more damage the higher their armor value is, scaling with potion level.[8]
  • Chilly slows the victim down and makes them visually shake.[8]
  • Featherweight gives a damaged victim increased knockback, scaling with potion level.[8]
  • Gooey constantly places Scintling Goo under the victim's feet.[8]

How do you progress through The Undergarden?

7 parts

The Undergarden has its own quest chapter in this pack, and it's the best map of the mod's gear tiers. Each material gets a quest for its base item: Cloggrum, Froststeel, Utherium, Forgotten metal and Regalium. Finishing a material's quest unlocks follow-up quests for that material's tool set and armor set.[2]

The Catalyst

The chapter includes a quest for the Catalyst, a quest in "?". This pack changed the Catalyst recipe to use common tags, so any diamond, gold ingot and iron ingot that share those tags will work.[2][6]

Cloggrum

Cloggrum is your first real metal. Grab a Cloggrum Ingot for a quest in "?" by smelting or blasting Cloggrum ore or raw Cloggrum. That quest unlocks a quest in "?" for the full tool set, a quest in "?" for the armor, and a quest in "?" for the Cloggrum Battleaxe and Cloggrum Shield.[2][6]

This pack changed the Cloggrum tool, armor and storage block recipes to accept any item tagged as a Cloggrum ingot. The pack also added its own recipe for the Cloggrum Shield.[6]

Froststeel

a quest in "?" asks for a Froststeel Ingot. You can smelt or blast Raw Froststeel or Shiverstone Froststeel Ore to get one. From there, a quest in "?" covers the tools and a quest in "?" covers the armor. These use the mod's standard recipes.[2][6]

Tip: You can smelt or blast Froststeel items back into Froststeel Ingots, so worn-out gear still has value.[6]

Utherium

a quest in "?" needs a Utherium Crystal. You can get one by smelting or blasting Utherium items, or by converting a Utheric Cluster with the Undergarden's infuser conversion. This quest unlocks a quest in "?" for tools and a quest in "?" for armor.[2][6]

This pack changed the Utherium tool, armor and block recipes to use the common Utherium gem tag instead of the mod's own item.[6]

Forgotten metal

a quest in "?" asks for a Forgotten Ingot, and you can also craft one from Forgotten Nugget. It unlocks a quest in "?" for tools and a quest in "?" for the Forgotten Battleaxe. Forgotten gear isn't crafted from scratch. Instead, you upgrade Cloggrum gear in a smithing table with a Forgotten Ingot and a Smithing Template.[2][6]

Tip: Hang on to your Cloggrum tools and battleaxe. They're the base items for the Forgotten upgrades.[6]

Recipe id: undergarden:forgotten_pickaxe_smithing

Unverified Where Forgotten Ingots and the upgrade Smithing Template are found isn't covered by these sources.

Regalium and Ancient armor

a quest in "?" asks for a Regalium Crystal. You get it by smelting or blasting Regalium ore, and this pack changed those recipes to accept any tagged Regalium ore. If you run Productive Bees, a centrifuge recipe also produces Regalium Crystals.[2][6]

The chapter also has a quest in "?", which asks for the Ancient Helmet, Ancient Chestplate and Ancient Leggings.[2]

Unverified How to obtain the Ancient armor isn't covered by these sources.

Other chapters

The Undergarden's materials also appear in the pack's general chapters. The basic armor chapter repeats the ingot, crystal and armor-set quests for Cloggrum, Froststeel, Utherium, Forgotten metal and Regalium.[4]

Unverified The sources don't give stats or mining levels, so the exact power order of these tiers can't be confirmed here.

How does The Undergarden work with other mods?

3 parts

The Undergarden's links to the rest of this pack come in three flavours: the pack adds sawing recipes for its woods, BiblioCraft furniture comes in Undergarden wood types, and several quest chapters outside the Undergarden chapter use its metals, tools and armor. Here's what connects to what.[4][5][6][10]

Sawing Undergarden wood

The pack adds Mekanism sawing recipes for all four Undergarden woods. They turn Ancient Root and the Grongle, Smogstem and Wigglewood logs into Ancient Root Planks, Grongle Planks, Smogstem Planks and Wigglewood Planks. Each recipe also gives you Mekanism's Sawdust as a second output.[6]

The pack also adds Productive Trees sawmill recipes that produce the same four plank types. These recipes involve Productive Trees' own Sawdust, so check the recipe view to see exactly how they are set up.[6]

BiblioCraft furniture

If you like decorating, Grongle, Smogstem and Wigglewood slabs are used in BiblioCraft furniture recipes. These are the mod's own recipes, not pack additions. You can make display cases, seats and several seat backs: small, flat, raised, tall and fancy. They come in colored variants, including black, blue and brown, such as the Blue Smogstem Display Case or the Brown Grongle Seat.[6]

Tip: The fancy and tall seat backs are crafted from the matching flat seat back. Make the flat version first if you want the fancier styles.[6]

Quests in other chapters

The Undergarden has its own quest chapter, but its gear also appears in the pack's general chapters. In the basic armor chapter, quests ask for the Cloggrum Ingot, Froststeel Ingot, Forgotten Ingot, Utherium Crystal and Regalium Crystal. Other quests in that chapter ask for the full Cloggrum, Froststeel and Utherium armor sets.[4]

The basic tools chapter is where Undergarden gear competes with other mods. Several quests accept any one of a group of tools, so an Undergarden tool can stand in for one from Deeper Darker, Eternal Starlight or Aquaculture.[5]

In the building tips chapter, a quest in "?" accepts any one of the Undergarden metal blocks, including the Block of Cloggrum, Block of Froststeel and Block of Utherium. A single storage block is enough to tick it off.[10]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use The Undergarden?

3 parts

The Undergarden has its own quest chapter in this pack, and its items also appear in the armor, tools and building chapters. Most of these quests are simple collection tasks: grab the item, tick the quest. Here's what each chapter asks for and how the quests unlock.[2][4][5][10]

The Undergarden chapter

The chapter starts with a quest in "?", which asks for a Catalyst and has no prerequisite. Almost every other quest here unlocks after the same earlier quest, so once that's done you can work through the chapter in any order you like.[2]

A big part of the chapter is exploring and gathering. Each of these quests asks for a single item you'll pick up while wandering the dimension:[2]

Metals and gear

The materials quests are where the chapter branches out. Getting the base material unlocks follow-up quests for the gear made from it, so collect the ingot or crystal first.[2]

There's also a quest in "?", which wants the Ancient Helmet, Ancient Chestplate and Ancient Leggings. This one needs two earlier quests completed before it opens up, so expect it later than the rest.[2]

Other chapters

The basic_armor chapter repeats the Undergarden materials and armor sets as standalone quests: a quest in "?" for a Cloggrum Ingot, a quest in "?" for a Froststeel Ingot, a quest in "?" for a Utherium Crystal, a quest in "?" for a Forgotten Ingot and a quest in "?" for a Regalium Crystal. Full armor sets are covered by a quest in "?" (Cloggrum), a quest in "?" (Froststeel) and a quest in "?" (Utherium).[4]

In the basic_tools chapter, several quests accept Undergarden gear as one of a few options, so it's a handy shortcut if you're already kitted out. a quest in "?" takes a Froststeel or Cloggrum pickaxe, a quest in "?" takes a Utherium pickaxe, a quest in "?" takes a Forgotten pickaxe, a quest in "?" takes a Forgotten or Cloggrum sword and a quest in "?" takes a Froststeel sword. a quest in "?" specifically wants the Utherium Sword.[5]

Finally, the building_tips chapter has a quest in "?", which accepts any one of the metal blocks: Block of Cloggrum, Block of Regalium, Block of Froststeel, Block of Forgotten Metal or Block of Utherium.[10]

Unverified The shared quest that unlocks most of the Undergarden chapter isn't identified in the quest data available here, so it's not confirmed whether it's the Catalyst quest or something else.

What changed in The Undergarden between versions?

The sources I have only cover a few pack releases, so this is a short history. The Undergarden has been part of All the Mods 10 since version 2.2 or earlier, and All the Mods 10 4.5 ships version 0.9.3 of the mod.[3]

  • All the Mods 10 4.0: The Undergarden was updated from 0.8.22 to 0.9.1.[11]
  • All the Mods 10 4.1: The Undergarden was updated from 0.9.1 to 0.9.3.[12]
  • All the Mods 10 4.5: still on 0.9.3, so there has been no Undergarden update since 4.1 in the sources I have.[3][12]

Unverified What actually changed inside the mod between 0.8.22, 0.9.1 and 0.9.3 is unverified. The pack changelogs only list the version numbers, and there are no stored changelogs for the shipped jars, so I can't tell you about new content, fixes or balance changes.
