What is The Undergarden?

2 parts

The Undergarden adds a dark, subterranean dimension that sits deep below the bedrock of the Overworld. The plants down there have adapted to life without sunlight and grow anywhere regardless of light level, and the place is home to strange creatures alongside the invasive Rotspawn, monsters that come from a chaotic, mysterious realm.[1]

It is built as an exploration dimension first: a whole new world to explore, build and survive in, with 15 biomes, over 10 unique entities, over 10 music tracks, 4 special potion effects and 1 dungeon. There are also over 10 advancements to point you in the right direction as you poke around.[1]

The part most players come for is the ores. Undergarden ores have special properties when you turn them into tools and weapons, so a trip down there is an easy way to upgrade your gear early on without touching heavier tech mods.[1]

Getting in

Entry works a bit like the Nether. You craft a Catalyst, build a Nether-portal-shaped frame out of Stone Bricks or Deepslate Bricks, then right-click the inner bottom of the frame with the Catalyst to light it. Bricks derived from the Undergarden itself also work for the frame.[1]

Where it fits in this pack

This pack leans on the Undergarden for its early gear progression. The basic armor quest chapter asks you for Cloggrum Ingot, Froststeel Ingot, Forgotten Ingot, Utherium Crystal and Regalium Crystal, plus full sets of Cloggrum, Froststeel and Utherium armor.[2]

The basic tools chapter accepts Undergarden gear for most of its steps, usually as one option among several mods. A Froststeel Pickaxe or Cloggrum Pickaxe satisfies a quest in "?", the Forgotten Pickaxe covers a quest in "?", and the Utherium Pickaxe works for a quest in "?". On the weapon side, a quest in "?" specifically wants the Utherium Sword, while the Forgotten Sword, Cloggrum Sword and Froststeel Sword each count toward other sword quests.[3]

Tip: If you are working through the basic tools chapter, one Undergarden trip can knock out several quests at once, since Undergarden picks and swords are valid answers for most of them.[3]

This pack ships The Undergarden 0.8.22, and the mod is not part of the ATM Star quest path, so treat it as an optional but very convenient gearing detour.[4]

How do you get started with The Undergarden?

5 parts

The Undergarden is a dark, subterranean dimension that sits deep below the Overworld's bedrock, with its own plants, its own mobs and ores that give tools and weapons special properties. Your first job is simply getting there, and then getting a full kit of Undergarden metal so the place stops being dangerous.[1]

Step 1: Get into the dimension

Entry starts with a Catalyst. Once you have one, build a frame the same shape as a Nether portal out of Stone Bricks or Deepslate Bricks, then right-click the inner bottom of the frame with the Catalyst to light it. Bricks made from Undergarden stone work for the frame too, which is handy once you want a return portal on the other side.[1]

Unverified The exact Catalyst recipe used in this pack isn't confirmed by the sources here, so check it in JEI/EMI before you go shopping for ingredients. This site does hold All the Mods 10's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

Step 2: Smelt Cloggrum

Cloggrum is the starter metal. You'll find Cloggrum ore in both of the dimension's main stones, Depthrock and Shiverstone, and mining it drops Raw Cloggrum that cooks down into Cloggrum Ingots in a furnace or, faster, a blast furnace. Grab a quest in "?" on the way, since it just asks for a Cloggrum Ingot.[2][5]

Recipe id: undergarden:smelt_raw_cloggrum

A blasting version, undergarden:blast_raw_cloggrum, is also available.

The pack also adds Ender IO alloy smelting recipes for the Undergarden ores, so once you have an Alloy Smelter running you can feed it raw ore or the ore blocks directly instead of using a furnace.[5]

Step 3: Cloggrum pickaxe, sword and armor

Make the pickaxe and sword before anything else: the pickaxe gets you through the rest of the ores, and the sword is accepted by a quest in "?".[3][5]

Step 5: Upgrade to Forgotten gear

Forgotten Ingots are forged from the nuggets a Forgotten Guardian drops, and they complete a quest in "?". You don't craft Forgotten tools from scratch: you upgrade Cloggrum ones at a smithing table using Smithing Template, which only accepts a Cloggrum weapon or tool in the base slot. That's the payoff for making Cloggrum gear first.[2][5][6]

How does The Undergarden work?

6 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.6 guide

The Undergarden is a dimension mod rather than a tech mod: there are no machines, no power network and no fluid or item pipes to wire up here. Its systems are a new world to explore, the ores and gear you bring out of it, and a handful of status effects that change how fights play out. The feature list is a whole dimension, over 10 unique entities, 15 biomes, ores with special properties when made into tools and weapons, over 10 music tracks, over 10 advancements, 4 special potion effects and 1 dungeon.[1]

Getting there: the Catalyst and the portal

Everything starts with the Catalyst. In this pack the Catalyst recipe has been changed from the mod default, so check the panel below rather than going from memory or an old video.[1][7]

Changed by the pack

  1. Craft the Catalyst.[1][7]
  2. Build a frame in the shape of a Nether portal out of Stone Bricks or Deepslate Bricks.[1]
  3. Right click the inner bottom of the frame with the Catalyst to light it.[1]
Tip: You can also build the frame from bricks derived from the Undergarden itself, which is handy once you are already down there and want a return portal that matches the scenery.[1]

The Undergarden itself sits deep underground, below the bedrock of the Overworld. Its plants have adapted to grow anywhere without light, and the native creatures share the place with the invasive Rotspawn, monsters that come from a separate chaotic realm.[1]

Ores and the gear progression

The core progression loop is ore to gear to better gear. Undergarden ores have special properties once you turn them into tools and weapons, so the metal you pick matters more than a raw stat line would suggest.[1]

Cloggrum is the entry metal and covers the full kit: sword, axe, pickaxe, shovel, hoe, shield, the four armour pieces and decorative blocks. Cloggrum Boots carry their own perk, since Scintling Goo does not slow you down while you are wearing them.[6][7]

Cloggrum storage works the way you would expect from a vanilla metal, with recipes both ways between Cloggrum Nugget, Cloggrum Ingot and Block of Cloggrum, so nothing you smelt is ever stuck in the wrong form.[7]

The next tier is Forgotten gear, and it is a smithing upgrade rather than a fresh craft. The Forgotten upgrade template takes a cloggrum weapon or tool in its base slot, and Forgotten Ingots are forged from the nuggets dropped by Forgotten Guardians. Working through it unlocks all 6 Forgotten tools.[6]

The special properties show up as tooltips on the finished gear. Forgotten tools mine Undergarden blocks 1.5x as fast, Forgotten weapons deal 1.5x damage to non-boss Undergarden mobs, and Utherium weapons deal 1.5x damage to Rotspawn. There is also a Cloggrum Battleaxe, which you get from a Forgotten that is carrying one, and it can be upgraded with a Forgotten Ingot like the rest.[6]

Status effects

The mod adds its own effects, and several of them are things monsters and traps will put on you rather than buffs you brew.[1][6]

  • Brittleness: the higher the victim's armour value, the more damage they take, and the damage scales with the potion level. Heavy armour is a liability here.[6]
  • Virulence: similar to poison, but does more damage at a slower rate.[6]
  • Virulent Resistance: grants immunity to Virulence and suppresses its damage.[6]
  • Featherweight: the victim receives increased knockback when damaged, scaling with the potion level.[6]
  • Chilly: slows the victim down and makes them visually shake.[6]
  • Gooey: Scintling Goo is constantly placed under the victim's feet.[6]

The Slingshot

The Slingshot is the mod's ranged system and it runs on ammo you pick up around the dimension. Anything usable in it is labelled as Slingshot ammo on the item tooltip, so you can tell at a glance what is worth carrying. Pebbles are the basic shot, but you can also load Scintling Goo Balls to annoy a target, Rotten Blisterberries, and even a Gronglet.[6]

It has three enchantments of its own. Longevity increases the Slingshot's max durability, Ricochet makes fired projectiles bounce off block surfaces, and Self Sling fires you instead of your ammo, which requires you to be standing on the ground.[6]

Tip: There is an advancement for dealing 20 or more damage with a single pebble, so the Slingshot clearly scales further than it first looks. Experiment with ammo and enchantment combinations.[6]

Other systems worth knowing

  • Stoneborn will trade with you, so they are your in-dimension shop.[6]
  • The Shard Torch is a torch that damages Rotspawn in its vicinity, which makes it a defensive block as much as a light source.[6]
  • You can create a Forgotten Minion using a Forgotten Block and a Carved Gloomgourd, the same way you would build a golem.[6]
  • Gloomgourds grow from seeds you plant, so they are a renewable farm crop.[6]
  • Gwiblings are caught with a bucket rather than fought.[6]
  • The Catacombs are the dimension's dungeon, and the Forgotten Guardian you need for Forgotten Ingots is the fight that gates the upgrade tier.[1][6]

Crafting odds and ends

Beyond gear, the pack's recipe set covers a full decorative and utility line: brick slabs and stairs, chiseled variants of depthrock, shiverstone and tremblecrust bricks made from their slabs, cloggrum tiles, bars and a lantern, a mogmoss rug, and a depthrock bed. Deepsoil converts both ways between its normal and coarse forms, just like dirt.[7]

Two combat consumables chain into each other: the Blisterbomb is built from Rotten Blisterberry and Twistytwig, and feeding a Blisterbomb into a Gloomgourd gives you a Boomgourd.[7]

How do you progress through The Undergarden?

4 parts

The Undergarden's gear progression in this pack is built around metal tiers, and the pack's quests track each one. They are split between an armor chapter and a tools chapter. The metals you'll meet are Cloggrum, Froststeel, Utherium, Regalium and the Forgotten metal.[2][3]

Getting the materials

Cloggrum and Froststeel both end up as ingots. You can get Cloggrum Ingot from Raw Cloggrum or from the Depthrock and Shiverstone cloggrum ores. You can get Froststeel Ingot from Raw Froststeel or from Shiverstone Froststeel Ore. All of these smelt in a regular furnace, and the mod also gives them blasting recipes.[5]

Utherium and Regalium end up as crystals. Depthrock Utherium Ore and Shiverstone Utherium Ore give you Utherium Crystal. Depthrock Regalium Ore and Shiverstone Regalium Ore give you Regalium Crystal. A Utheric Shard can also be turned into a Utherium Crystal, as shown below.[5]

Crafting Shaped

This pack adds extra Ender IO alloy smelting recipes for the same ore-to-ingot and ore-to-crystal conversions, so you aren't limited to a vanilla furnace if you already have Ender IO machines running. The mod's own furnace and blasting recipes still exist alongside them.[5]

There is also a Productive Bees centrifuge recipe that outputs a Regalium Crystal along with wax, which gives you a non-mining route to that material.[5]

    Armor quests

The armor chapter asks for each metal as a material first and then as a full set. Each of these quests is satisfied by owning the items.[2]

The sources don't say in what order the armor quests unlock, so you can plan your own route through them.[2]

    Tool quests

The tools chapter is more flexible. Several quests accept a pickaxe or sword from this mod or from other mods.[3]

    Crafting the tool tiers

The Cloggrum, Froststeel and Utherium pickaxes are all crafted at a crafting table. Here are the in-pack recipes.[5]

How does The Undergarden work with other mods?

    3 parts

In this pack the Undergarden connects to other mods through wood processing, through bee recipes that produce its materials, and through quests that accept its tools alongside gear from other mods.[3][5]

    Sawing Undergarden logs

The pack adds sawing recipes for Grongle, Smogstem and Wigglewood logs in Mekanism and in Productive Trees. In Mekanism, sawing any of these logs gives you planks and also Sawdust. In the Productive Trees sawmill, you put in Sawdust together with the logs to get the planks. The pack added all of these recipes, they are not the mods' own.[5]

    Productive Bees

Productive Bees has centrifuge recipes whose results are Wax plus an Undergarden material. The cloggrum one gives Raw Cloggrum, the forgotten one gives Forgotten Nugget and the froststeel one gives Raw Froststeel. The regalium one gives Regalium Crystal and the utheric one gives Utheric Shard. These are the mod's own recipes, not pack changes.[5]

      Shared tool quests

Several quests in the basic tools chapter accept Undergarden gear or gear from another mod. For example, a quest in "?" takes the Utherium Pickaxe or a pickaxe from Eternal Starlight, Aquaculture or Deeper Darker. a quest in "?" takes the Froststeel Pickaxe or Cloggrum Pickaxe, or an Eternal Starlight pickaxe.[3]

The sword and pickaxe quests work the same way. a quest in "?" accepts the Forgotten Sword or Cloggrum Sword, or a Deeper Darker sword. a quest in "?" accepts the Froststeel Sword or one of several Eternal Starlight swords. a quest in "?" accepts the Forgotten Pickaxe or a Deeper Darker pickaxe.[3]

Tip: Because these quests list alternatives, you only need one of the listed items to complete each one. Use whichever gear you can get first.[3]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use The Undergarden?

      2 parts

The Undergarden shows up in two quest chapters in this pack: basic_armor and basic_tools. Both are about turning the dimension's metals into gear. None of these quests has a title in the quest files, so I describe each one by what it asks for.[2][3]

      Chapter: basic_armor

This chapter is all Undergarden. It pairs materials with armor sets, and the quest files don't show any prerequisites between these quests. That means I can't tell you a fixed order, so work through them in whatever order suits your progress.[2]

      Chapter: basic_tools

Here Undergarden shares the chapter with other mods. Most of these quests accept any one item from a list, so an Undergarden tool is just one of several ways to finish them. All six quests below unlock after the same earlier quest, so they open up together and you can do them in any order.[3]

Tip: Because the basic_tools quests accept several alternatives, you don't need to craft every Undergarden tool. Hand in whichever matching tool you already have. The exception is the Utherium Sword quest, which only takes that one item.[3]

Which The Undergarden config options matter?

Same as in the All the Mods 10 2.6 guide

Unverified This pack doesn't ship a config file for The Undergarden, so there are no pack-specific values to tune here: nothing has been changed from the mod's own defaults, and there's no file to edit in the pack's config folder.

That means the dimension behaves as the mod ships it: the biomes, mobs, ores and dungeon are all there with no pack-side adjustments you need to know about before you dive in.[1]

Tip: If you're looking for how to actually get down there, skip ahead to the portal section, you activate a Nether-portal-shaped frame of Stone Bricks or Deepslate Bricks with a Catalyst rather than changing any settings.[1]

What changed in The Undergarden between versions?

      2 parts

All the Mods 10 1.15 ships The Undergarden 0.8.22. The mod has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 0.42 or earlier. The notes below come from the mod's own changelogs for its two most recent versions, since I have no pack changelog entries for this mod.[4]

      0.8.22 (the version in 1.15)

      • Forgotten are now considered undead.[8]
      • A special dimension transition screen was added for the Undergarden.[8]
      • Undergarden food items were added to the c:foods tag.[8]
      • Underbeans, Blisterberries and Ditchbulbs were not growing, and that is now fixed.[8]

      0.8.21

      • Fixed the Undergarden portal effect messing with other portals.[9]

If you were having trouble getting those three crops to grow on an older pack version, the 0.8.22 fix is the reason it works now.[4][8]
