What is The Undergarden?

2 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.5 guide

The Undergarden adds a dark underground dimension that sits deep below the Overworld's bedrock. Plants there have adapted to the darkness and grow anywhere, with no light needed. The locals are strange creatures, and they are plagued by the Rotspawn, invasive monsters from a chaotic, mysterious realm. If you enjoy exploring a whole new world, building in it and surviving whatever lives there, this mod is for you.[1]

  • 15 biomes to explore, plus 1 dungeon.[1]
  • Over 10 unique entities and over 10 music tracks.[1]
  • Ores with special properties when you turn them into tools and weapons.[1]
  • 4 special potion effects, and over 10 advancements to guide you along the way.[1]

Getting there

Your ticket in is the Catalyst. Build a frame shaped like a Nether portal from Stone Bricks or Deepslate Bricks, then right-click the inner bottom of the frame with the Catalyst to light it. Once you've been down there, bricks made from Undergarden materials work for the frame too.[1]

In the pack, the Undergarden quest chapter starts with a quest in "?", which asks you to get the Catalyst. That makes it the natural first goal.[2]

Where it fits in All the Mods 10

All the Mods 10 4.5 ships The Undergarden 0.9.3 for Minecraft 1.21.1.[3]

The pack's Undergarden chapter works like a tour of the dimension. It has quests for the local food and plants, such as Underbeans, Blisterberry and Gloomgourd, plus saplings, mushrooms and the Slingshot. It also covers the four metals: Cloggrum Ingot, Froststeel Ingot, Utherium Crystal and Forgotten Ingot, each followed by quests for its tools or armor.[2]

Those materials also count toward the pack's general progression. The basic armor chapter includes quests for Cloggrum, Froststeel and Utherium armor sets. It also asks for Regalium Crystal and the Undergarden ingots and crystals.[4]

In the basic tools chapter, Undergarden gear is one option among several mods. For example, a quest in "?" accepts a Froststeel or Cloggrum pickaxe, and a quest in "?" accepts a Forgotten or Cloggrum sword. So a trip underground can knock out several of those quests at once.[5]

How do you get started with The Undergarden?

4 parts

The Undergarden is a dark, subterranean dimension far below the Overworld. The plants there grow without light, and it's home to strange creatures plus the invasive Rotspawn that plague them. Your first job is simply getting there.[1]

Step 1: the Catalyst

Everything starts with the Catalyst. Note that this pack changed the Catalyst recipe, so check the in-pack version below rather than anything you remember from vanilla Undergarden.[1][6]

With a Catalyst in hand, build a frame in the shape of a Nether portal out of Stone Bricks or Deepslate Bricks, then right click the inner bottom of the frame with the Catalyst to light it. Bricks derived from the Undergarden itself work too, once you have them.[1]

The quest book tracks this for you: a quest in "?" asks for a Catalyst, and nearly every other Undergarden quest unlocks once you've stepped through.[7]

Step 2: Cloggrum gear

Cloggrum is your entry-level metal down there. Smelt or blast the ore, or the raw drop, to get Cloggrum Ingot, and if you already have an Ender IO alloy smelter running, the pack adds alloy smelting recipes for it too.[6]

Where to go next

Once Cloggrum is sorted, the next tiers are Froststeel and Utherium, each with their own ingot or crystal quest (a quest in "?" and a quest in "?") feeding into tool and armour quests. Utherium weapons deal 1.5x damage to Rotspawn, which makes them the natural upgrade for fighting your way around.[7][9]

The real end goal is Forgotten gear. You don't craft it from scratch: you smith an existing Cloggrum tool with a Forgotten Ingot and the Smithing Template, and the ingot itself is forged from a Forgotten Guardian's nuggets. Forgotten tools mine Undergarden blocks 1.5x as fast and their weapons deal 1.5x damage to non-boss Undergarden mobs, so keep your early Cloggrum tools around as upgrade bases.[6][9]

Tip: Don't throw those first Cloggrum tools in a furnace. a quest in "?" wants the full Forgotten tool set, and each one is a smithing upgrade of the matching Cloggrum tool.[6][7]

How does The Undergarden work?

6 parts

The Undergarden is a dimension mod rather than a tech mod: instead of machines and power networks, its systems are a portal, a set of ores whose gear has special rules, a slingshot with its own enchantments, and a family of custom potion effects. Here's how each of those pieces actually works in this pack.[1][9]

The portal and the Catalyst

The Undergarden sits deep below the bedrock of the Overworld, and the only way in is a portal you light yourself. First you craft a Catalyst; the pack has changed this recipe, so build it from what the crafting grid shows here rather than from anything you remember from the mod's defaults.[1][6]

Then build a frame in the same shape as a Nether portal out of Stone Bricks or Deepslate Bricks, and right click the inner bottom of the frame with the Catalyst to activate it. Bricks derived from the Undergarden itself also work as frame blocks.[1]

Which blocks count as a valid frame is driven by the block tag undergarden:portal_frame_blocks, so anything in that tag can be used to build a portal.[10]

When the game needs to generate a return portal on the Undergarden side, it builds it out of whatever block [[config:config/undergarden-common.toml#Return Portal Frame Block ID]] points at. In this pack that's left at minecraft:stone_bricks. If the value entered there isn't a valid block, the game falls back to generating minecraft:stone_bricks anyway.[10]

Tip: The dimension uses its own special fog parameters. If the murk is hurting your visibility or your frame rate, set [[config:config/undergarden-client.toml#Toggle Undergarden Fog]] to false to fall back to vanilla fog; the pack ships it enabled.[11]

Ores and material properties

The Undergarden's ores aren't just recolored iron. Tools and weapons made from them carry special properties, which is the core progression loop of the mod: mine a new ore, get gear that performs better specifically inside the dimension.[1]

  • Forgotten tools mine Undergarden blocks 1.5x as fast.[9]
  • Forgotten weapons deal 1.5x damage to non-boss Undergarden mobs.[9]
  • Utherium weapons deal 1.5x damage to Rotspawn, the invasive monsters that plague the dimension.[1][9]
  • Cloggrum Boots stop Scintling Goo from slowing you down while worn.[9]

Cloggrum and the smithing upgrade path

Cloggrum is your entry-level Undergarden metal and it behaves like a normal vanilla-style metal: the pack's recipes let you compress ingots into a Block of Cloggrum and break it back down, and split ingots into Cloggrum Nugget and recombine them. All of those conversion recipes were changed by the pack, so check the grid in-game before you plan a build around them.[6]

The full Cloggrum tool and armor set is crafted from ingots, and the pack also adds its own Cloggrum Shield recipe that isn't part of the base mod.[6]

Cloggrum gear isn't the end of the line. Forgotten Ingots are forged from a Forgotten Guardian's nuggets, and the Forgotten Upgrade smithing template takes a Cloggrum weapon or tool in its base slot, letting you upgrade your way to all six Forgotten tools and the Forgotten Battleaxe. The Cloggrum Battleaxe that feeds that last upgrade isn't crafted at all, though: you take it from a Forgotten that's carrying one.[9]

The Slingshot

The Slingshot is the mod's ranged system, and it doesn't use arrows. Items tagged as slingshot ammo carry a tooltip saying so, and different ammo produces very different results: plain pebbles, Scintling Goo Balls to annoy a target, Gronglets, and Rotten Blisterberry for something considerably more explosive.[9]

It also has three of its own enchantments. Longevity increases the Slingshot's max durability, Ricochet makes fired projectiles bounce off block surfaces, and Self Sling replaces the ammo with you, firing you through the air, though it requires you to be standing on the ground.[9]

Potion effects

The Undergarden adds several status effects you'll meet on both ends of a fight, and a couple of them scale with potion level rather than being flat.[1][9]

  • Brittleness makes a victim take more damage the higher their armor value is, and the damage received scales with potion level.[9]
  • Featherweight makes a victim receive increased knockback when damaged, with the knockback scaling with potion level.[9]
  • Virulence works like poison but deals more damage at a slower rate; Virulent Resistance grants immunity to it and suppresses that damage.[9]
  • Chilly slows the victim down and makes them visually shake, and Gooey constantly places Scintling Goo under the victim's feet.[9]

Farming and crafted utilities

Undergarden flora has adapted to the dark and can grow anywhere, independent of light level, which means you can farm it underground without lighting rigs.[1]

Gloomgourds are the mod's pumpkin analogue: you plant a seed, harvest the gourds, and a carved gourd plus a Forgotten Block lets you build a Forgotten Minion, snow-golem style. Combine a Gloomgourd with a Blisterbomb and you get a Boomgourd instead.[6][9]

Soil works as a two-way cycle as well: Deepsoil plus depthrock pebbles gives you Coarse Deepsoil, and coarse deepsoil converts straight back to regular deepsoil in the crafting grid.[6]

For lighting, the Shard Torch is worth crafting early: it's a torch that damages Rotspawn in its vicinity, so it doubles as passive area defense around a base.[9]

Unverified The sources available for this page don't describe any machines, multiblocks, power or fluid handling for The Undergarden, and nothing about item-transport or automation blocks from this mod. Treat it as a dimension and gear mod unless you find otherwise in-game.

How do you progress through The Undergarden?

6 parts

The Undergarden's progression in this pack is driven by its metals. Each tier gets you a full tool set and a full armour set, and the pack's quest chapter for the dimension is laid out the same way: one quest for the material, then quests branching off it for the gear you can build from it.[7]

The quest chapter opens with a Catalyst, the item that gets you into the dimension in the first place. In this pack the catalyst recipe has been changed, so check the in-pack version rather than what you remember from the mod.[6][7]

Tier 1: Cloggrum

Cloggrum is your entry metal. Quest a quest in "?" asks for a Cloggrum Ingot, and it unlocks two follow-ups: a quest in "?" for the pickaxe, axe, shovel, hoe and sword, and a quest in "?" for the four armour pieces. A third, a quest in "?", wants the Cloggrum Battleaxe and the Cloggrum Shield.[7]

You get ingots by smelting or blasting cloggrum ore or raw cloggrum, and the pack has changed those furnace recipes as well as adding Ender IO alloy smelter versions. The shield is a pack addition too, upgrading a vanilla shield rather than using a mod recipe.[6]

Tier 2: Froststeel

Froststeel is the cold-biome metal. Quest a quest in "?" wants a Froststeel Ingot, then a quest in "?" covers the tool set and a quest in "?" the armour set. You can smelt or blast Raw Froststeel or Shiverstone Froststeel Ore directly, and the pack adds alloy smelter recipes for both.[6][7]

Smelting

Recipe id: undergarden:smelt_shiverstone_froststeel_ore

Tier 3: Utherium

Utherium is the crystal tier. Quest a quest in "?" asks for a Utherium Crystal, which opens a quest in "?" for the tools and a quest in "?" for the armour. Beyond mining and smelting utherium ore, you can also craft a crystal up from a Utheric Shard.[6][7]

Crafting Shaped

Tier 4: Forgotten metal

Forgotten metal sits at the top of the weapon and tool chain. Quest a quest in "?" wants a Forgotten Ingot, which unlocks a quest in "?" for the forgotten pickaxe, axe, shovel, hoe and sword, and a quest in "?" for the Forgotten Battleaxe.[7]

Forgotten tools are not crafted from scratch. Each one is a smithing upgrade that takes the matching cloggrum tool, a forgotten ingot and the Smithing Template, so hold on to your cloggrum gear instead of melting it down.[6]

Smithing Transform

Recipe id: undergarden:forgotten_pickaxe_smithing

Tip: There is no forgotten armour set. The pack's armour quest at the top of the chain is a quest in "?", which asks for the Ancient Helmet, Ancient Chestplate and Ancient Leggings, and it needs progress from outside the Undergarden chapter to unlock.[7]

Regalium and the side branch

Regalium has its own quest, a quest in "?" for a Regalium Crystal, but no tool or armour quests hang off it in the chapter. You can smelt or blast regalium ore, and in this pack you can also get crystals out of a Productive Bees centrifuge from the right honeycomb.[6][7]

The rest of the chapter is a wide spread of collection quests that all branch straight off the same entry point: mushrooms, saplings, crops and oddities like the Slingshot, the Gloomgourd, and a quest in "?" for the Blisterbomb and Boomgourd. These are not gated behind the metal tiers, so you can knock them out on your first few trips.[7]

Quests elsewhere in the pack

Undergarden gear also counts towards the pack's general progression chapters. The basic armour chapter has standalone quests for cloggrum, froststeel and utherium armour sets plus the four materials, and the basic tools chapter accepts Undergarden picks and swords as options alongside gear from other mods.[8][12]

How does The Undergarden work with other mods?

3 parts

The Undergarden doesn't sit off in its own corner in this pack. Its woods feed into the usual processing machines, its metals show up in the general progression quests, and its planks get a full furniture treatment. Here's what actually links up.[6][7][8][12]

Wood processing

The pack adds sawing recipes so Undergarden logs behave like any other wood in your automation setup. Smogstem, Wigglewood and Grongle logs all work in Mekanism sawing, giving you planks plus Sawdust as a second output.[6]

Recipe id: allthemods:productivetrees/sawing/undergarden/smogstem_planks

Tip: All six sawing recipes accept the log tag for each wood rather than one specific block, so anything in that tag feeds the same machine.[6]

Furniture from Undergarden wood

BiblioWoods adds a big set of Undergarden furniture variants. Smogstem, Wigglewood and Grongle each get their own display case plus a full run of seats and seat backs, all built around that wood's slab, and the seating comes in black, blue and brown to match the wool you use.[6]

  • A display case for each of the three woods, such as Blue Smogstem Display Case, made from the slab and any glass block.[6]
  • Seats in three colours, like Blue Smogstem Seat, using the slab, matching wool and a wooden rod.[6]
  • Small, flat and raised seat backs, plus tall and fancy versions that upgrade a flat seat back with another slab.[6]

Quests that mix Undergarden gear with other mods

Beyond the dedicated Undergarden chapter, Undergarden items are accepted as answers in the pack's general progression quests. The basic tools chapter treats Undergarden gear as one valid path among several mods.[7][8]

The basic armor chapter also has its own entries for Cloggrum Ingot, Froststeel Ingot, Forgotten Ingot, Utherium Crystal and Regalium Crystal, plus full armour set quests for Cloggrum, Froststeel and Utherium.[12]

There's even a decorating nod: a quest in "?" in the building tips chapter counts any Undergarden metal block, so a Block of Cloggrum, Block of Regalium, Block of Froststeel, Block of Forgotten Metal or Block of Utherium all tick it off.[13]

Which All the Mods 10 quests use The Undergarden?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.5 guide

The Undergarden has its own quest chapter in this pack, and its items also appear in the armor, tools and building chapters. Most of these quests are simple collection tasks: grab the item, tick the quest. Here's what each chapter asks for and how the quests unlock.[2][4][5][14]

The Undergarden chapter

The chapter starts with a quest in "?", which asks for a Catalyst and has no prerequisite. Almost every other quest here unlocks after the same earlier quest, so once that's done you can work through the chapter in any order you like.[2]

A big part of the chapter is exploring and gathering. Each of these quests asks for a single item you'll pick up while wandering the dimension:[2]

Metals and gear

The materials quests are where the chapter branches out. Getting the base material unlocks follow-up quests for the gear made from it, so collect the ingot or crystal first.[2]

There's also a quest in "?", which wants the Ancient Helmet, Ancient Chestplate and Ancient Leggings. This one needs two earlier quests completed before it opens up, so expect it later than the rest.[2]

Other chapters

The basic_armor chapter repeats the Undergarden materials and armor sets as standalone quests: a quest in "?" for a Cloggrum Ingot, a quest in "?" for a Froststeel Ingot, a quest in "?" for a Utherium Crystal, a quest in "?" for a Forgotten Ingot and a quest in "?" for a Regalium Crystal. Full armor sets are covered by a quest in "?" (Cloggrum), a quest in "?" (Froststeel) and a quest in "?" (Utherium).[4]

In the basic_tools chapter, several quests accept Undergarden gear as one of a few options, so it's a handy shortcut if you're already kitted out. a quest in "?" takes a Froststeel or Cloggrum pickaxe, a quest in "?" takes a Utherium pickaxe, a quest in "?" takes a Forgotten pickaxe, a quest in "?" takes a Forgotten or Cloggrum sword and a quest in "?" takes a Froststeel sword. a quest in "?" specifically wants the Utherium Sword.[5]

Finally, the building_tips chapter has a quest in "?", which accepts any one of the metal blocks: Block of Cloggrum, Block of Regalium, Block of Froststeel, Block of Forgotten Metal or Block of Utherium.[14]

Unverified The shared quest that unlocks most of the Undergarden chapter isn't identified in the quest data available here, so it's not confirmed whether it's the Catalyst quest or something else.

Which The Undergarden config options matter?

2 parts

The Undergarden only ships a couple of settings you're likely to touch, and this pack leaves both at straightforward values. Here's what they do and where to find them.[10][11]

Undergarden fog

The [[config:config/undergarden-client.toml#Toggle Undergarden Fog]] option is set to true in this pack, which keeps the dimension's special fog parameters active. Setting it to false disables that and returns you to the vanilla fog instead. It's a client-side option, so you can flip it on your own game without touching a server, and it's the first thing to try if the murky atmosphere is hurting your visibility or your framerate.[11]

Tip: Turning the fog off is purely visual, so it won't change mob spawning, light levels or anything else about the dimension.[11]

Return portal frame block

[[config:config/undergarden-common.toml#Return Portal Frame Block ID]] is set to minecraft:stone_bricks in this pack. That's the block the game generates return portals out of when you arrive in the Undergarden. If you put in a value that isn't a valid block, it falls back to generating minecraft:stone_bricks anyway.[10]

Note that this option only controls the generated return portals. Which blocks you are allowed to build a portal from is decided by the undergarden:portal_frame_blocks block tag, not by this setting, so changing the frame block ID here won't let you light a portal out of something new.[10]

For reference, portals are built in the shape of a Nether portal out of Stone Bricks or Deepslate Bricks, and bricks derived from the Undergarden itself also work.[1]

What changed in The Undergarden between versions?

2 parts

All the Mods 10 2.12 includes The Undergarden 0.8.22 for Minecraft 1.21.1. The mod was first included in version 0.42 of the pack or earlier.[15]

The notes below come from the mod's own changelogs for versions 0.8.21 and 0.8.22.[16][17]

0.8.22 (the version in this pack)

  • Forgotten are now considered undead.[16]
  • A special dimension transition screen was added for the Undergarden.[16]
  • Undergarden food items were added to the c:foods tag.[16]
  • Fixed Underbeans, Blisterberries and Ditchbulbs not growing.[16]

0.8.21

  • Fixed the Undergarden portal effect messing with other portals.[17]
