What is Iron Furnaces?
1 part
Iron Furnaces is the mod that fixes the humble vanilla furnace. Inspired by Iron Chests, it adds a whole ladder of upgraded furnaces with faster smelting, configurable sides for automation, and augments that turn a furnace into a smoker, a blast furnace and more. This pack ships version 4.2.5.[1][2]
It is aimed at anyone who wants better smelting before they commit to a full tech mod. The furnaces work on plain solid fuel, they slot straight into hoppers and pipes thanks to reconfigurable sides, and they are cheap enough to be worth building on day two. The mod also has explicit compatibility with JEI and Project MMO, so recipes and progression hook in cleanly.[1]
Where it fits in the pack
The pack puts Iron Furnaces right at the start of the main questline. An early quest asks you for your first upgraded furnace, accepting Iron Furnace, Copper Furnace, Stone to Iron Furnace Upgrade or Stone to Copper Furnace Upgrade, and the quest directly after it wants any one augment. That makes it one of the first real progression steps you take.[3]
From there the mod gets its own run of quests in the generators chapter, which walks you up the tiers in order.[4]
- Start with Iron Furnace and Copper Furnace, which unlock the rest of the branch.[4]
- Move up through Silver Furnace and Golden Furnace, then Diamond Furnace.[4]
- Branch into Crystal Furnace and Emerald Furnace, which together lead to Obsidian Furnace and then Netherite Furnace.[4]
- Finish with Rainbow Core and eight Rainbow Plating to build the Rainbow Furnace, then unlock Rainbow Coal.[4]
Alongside the tier ladder there are side quests for the utility items: the Wireless Heat Transmitter and Wireless Heat Receiver pair, the Furnace Settings Linker for cloning furnace settings, and the cosmetic Furnace Wrapping Papers and Furnace Spooka-lator.[4]
How do you get started with Iron Furnaces?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.5 guide
Iron Furnaces is inspired by cpw's Iron Chests and adds a ladder of furnace tiers, plus augments that change how each furnace works. In All the Mods 10 you'll run into it early, because the main questline asks for your first upgraded furnace right away.[1][5]
Step 1: Your first upgraded furnace
The main questline step a quest in "?" accepts any one of four items: an Iron Furnace, a Copper Furnace, a Stone to Iron Furnace Upgrade or a Stone to Copper Furnace Upgrade. Pick whichever you can afford first. The Iron and Copper Furnaces are also the two starting quests of the generators chapter, a quest in "?" and a quest in "?".[5][6]

Step 2: Grab an augment
Right after that, the main questline step a quest in "?" asks for any one augment. To install an augment, right-click with it on the furnace. The two most useful early picks do opposite things, so choose based on whether you're short on time or on fuel.[5][8]
- Augment: Speed halves the cook time for all recipes, but the furnace uses twice as much fuel.[8]
- Augment: Fuel Efficiency makes fuel heat the furnace twice as much, but cook time for all recipes is 25% slower.[8]
- Augment: Blasting and Augment: Smoking limit the furnace to blasting recipes or to smoking recipes only.[8]
- Augment: Generator turns the furnace's heat into power, but the furnace can no longer smelt. Augment: Factory turns the furnace into a factory that runs on power instead of fuel.[8]

Step 3: Climb the early tiers
The generators chapter continues with the Silver Furnace (a quest in "?"), which unlocks after the Iron and Copper quests. It's followed by the Golden Furnace (a quest in "?") and then the Diamond Furnace. Each tier's recipe uses the furnace from the tier below, so keep your old furnace to upgrade it. You can reach Silver from either an Iron or a Copper Furnace.[6][7]

How does Iron Furnaces work?
8 parts
Every furnace in this mod is a single block that works like a vanilla furnace, just faster and with more knobs. Each tier has its own cook time in ticks, and the config file spells out that a vanilla furnace takes 200 ticks per operation, so you can read every number below as a direct comparison against that baseline.[9]
Speed by tier
In this pack the cook times are left at the mod's own values, so the progression runs straight from a slightly-better-than-vanilla starter furnace to the absurd end game. The Copper Furnace smelts in 180 ticks, the Iron Furnace in 160, Silver in 140, Gold in 120, Diamond in 80, and both Emerald and Crystal in 40.[9]
Past that the numbers get silly. The Obsidian Furnace and the Rainbow Furnace both run at 20 ticks per operation, and the Netherite Furnace and Allthemodium Furnace both finish an operation in 5 ticks.[9]
The two Other-dimension furnaces also smelt in bulk instead of one item at a time. The Allthemodium Furnace processes 16 items at once, and the Unobtainium Furnace pushes that to 64 items at once, which is the maximum the config allows.[9]
Tiers and energy buffers
Separately from speed, each furnace has a tier from 0 to 2 that decides how big its internal energy buffer is. Tier 0 furnaces store 80,000 RF, tier 1 stores 200,000 RF and tier 2 stores 1,000,000 RF.[9]
- Tier 0: Copper Furnace and Iron Furnace.[9]
- Tier 1: Silver Furnace and Golden Furnace.[9]
- Tier 2: Diamond Furnace, Emerald Furnace, Crystal Furnace, Obsidian Furnace, Netherite Furnace, Rainbow Furnace and Allthemodium Furnace.[9]
Augments
Augments are the real mechanic of this mod. You craft them as items and right-click to insert them into a furnace, and each one trades something away for something better.[10]
- Augment: Speed halves the cook time for all recipes, but the furnace uses up twice the amount of fuel.[10]
- Augment: Fuel Efficiency makes fuel heat the furnace twice as much, at the cost of slowing cook time by 25% for all recipes.[10]
- Augment: Blasting restricts the furnace to blasting recipes only, and Augment: Smoking restricts it to smoking recipes only.[10]
- Augment: Factory converts the furnace into a factory and adds configurable sides for item transfer, but it burns power for heat instead of fuel.[10]
- Augment: Generator turns heat from the furnace into power, but the furnace can no longer smelt items at all.[10]

Power generation
With the Generator augment in, a furnace burns fuel purely to make RF, and the rate scales hard with tier. In this pack the copper and iron furnaces generate 40 RF/t, silver 100, gold 160, diamond 240, emerald 320, crystal 360, obsidian 500, netherite 1,000, Allthemodium 2,000 and Unobtainium 5,000.[9]
The Rainbow Furnace has two separate generation values. Its normal generation sits at 2,000 RF/t, but the rainbow generation figure is 50,000 RF/t, and that number is only reached if all other furnaces are generating power. For that mode, one of each tier of furnace must be an active generator and must not have a full buffer.[9][10]
- The Rainbow Generator outputs energy to any side configured as output; it will not add that energy to its own internal buffer.[10]
- You can only have one Rainbow Generator.[10]
Redstone and comparator behaviour
A redstone augment cycles between several modes, and you right-click it in the air to change mode. Redstone Control mode stops the furnace smelting while it has a redstone signal, and Redstone Inverse Control mode flips that so it only smelts while powered.[10]
There are also two comparator modes. Comparator mode makes the furnace act as an internal comparator and outputs the signal to all sides, while Comparator Subtraction mode does the same but lets you subtract with a signal strength you configure in the furnace GUI.[10]
Experience handling
Furnaces bank the experience from what they smelt. The XP augment has two modes, switched by sneaking and right-clicking in the air: one ejects the experience to nearby fluid tanks, the other gives it to the player who placed the furnace.[10]
Wireless heat
If you would rather run furnaces off your RF grid without the Factory augment, the wireless heat system does it. You place Wireless Heat Receiver in the fuel slot of a furnace, and it only works from Iron tier and above.[10]
To bind a receiver, you place it inside Wireless Heat Transmitter. Feed that transmitter block Forge Energy and it will power every Wireless Heat Receiver bound to it. An unbound receiver tells you straight out that it has yet to be bound to an energy source.[10]

Quality of life
Furnace Settings Linker lets you copy furnace settings from one furnace to another, which saves a lot of clicking once you have a wall of configured machines. Furnace upgrades are also done in place: sneak and right-click with the next tier's item to upgrade rather than breaking and rebuilding.[10]
One config note worth knowing: misc.misc.lightupdates is set to false in this pack, which means light updates stay enabled and your furnaces emit light normally. If a big furnace farm ever causes lag, that is the switch that turns the light emission off.[9]
There are two cosmetic items too. Furnace Spooka-lator is right-clicked on a furnace to spookalize it, and sneaking and right-clicking cleanses any spookalizations. Furnace Wrapping Papers wraps a furnace as a gift, and sneaking and right-clicking opens the gift.[10]
Unverified The exact energy cost per operation for the Factory augment, and the per-side input/output configuration options in the furnace GUI, are not covered by the available sources.
How do you progress through Iron Furnaces?
7 parts
Iron Furnaces is a straight ladder: you start from a vanilla furnace, wrap it in a better metal, and keep feeding the result back into the next recipe. The pack's quest chapter follows that ladder almost exactly, so if you just work the quests top to bottom you'll end up with every tier in order.[4][11]
The chain shows up in the main questline too. One early quest accepts an Iron Furnace, a Copper Furnace, or either of the stone upgrade items, and the quest right after it accepts any one of the six augments, so a single cheap furnace and one augment gets you both.[3]
Tier 1: copper and iron
Both entry furnaces branch straight off a vanilla furnace, and the quest chapter opens with one quest for each: a quest in "?" for the Iron Furnace and a quest in "?" for the Copper Furnace. You don't have to pick one, copper can be converted into iron later.[4][11]

Endgame: the Rainbow Furnace
The top of the quest chain is the Rainbow Furnace. You need a Rainbow Core from a quest in "?", which consumes a finished Netherite Furnace, plus Rainbow Plating, and a quest in "?" asks for 8 of it. Plating is made from finished furnaces of the earlier tiers, so start building spares well before you get here.[4][11]

Upgrade items
Nearly every jump on the ladder also has a matching upgrade item, from Stone to Copper Furnace Upgrade and Stone to Iron Furnace Upgrade at the bottom right through to Vibranium to Unobtainium Furnace Upgrade. Where a tier has two crafting routes, there are two upgrades to match, for example Iron to Gold Furnace Upgrade from iron and Silver to Gold Furnace Upgrade from silver.[11]
Unverified How you apply an upgrade item to an existing furnace, and whether it preserves that furnace's contents or settings, isn't covered by the pack files used for this guide, test it on a spare furnace first.
How does Iron Furnaces work with other mods?
3 parts
Iron Furnaces connects to the rest of the pack through its top-tier furnace. The Rainbow Furnace is the one item from this mod that shows up in other mods' crafting, and both recipes that use it were added by the pack itself.[11]
Improbable Probability Device
The Improbable Probability Device needs a Rainbow Furnace, plus items from several other mods. Those include AE2, Mega Cells, Mekanism, Modern Industrialization, PneumaticCraft and Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks. The recipe below shows the exact layout.[11]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: allthemods:allthetweaks/improbable_probability_device
Philosopher's Fuel
Philosopher's Fuel also takes a Rainbow Furnace. The other ingredients come from Extreme Reactors, Generator Galore, Mystical Agriculture and Mystical Agradditions, plus vanilla bedrock. It's a pack-added recipe too, so you won't find it in the mods' own defaults.[11]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: allthemods:allthetweaks/philosophers_fuel
Quests and general compatibility
The Iron Furnaces quests in the pack only ask for this mod's own items. That means the furnace tiers, the heat transmitter and receiver, and the augments. None of them asks for items from two mods at once, so the recipes above are the real cross-mod links.[3][4]
The mod's project page says it should be compatible with most mods, and it names explicit compatibility with JEI and Project MMO. The page doesn't say how that works in this pack, so treat it as a general note.[1]
Which All the Mods 10 quests use Iron Furnaces?
4 parts
Iron Furnaces shows up in two quest chapters in this pack: the main questline (part 1) and the generators chapter. None of these quests have titles, so I'll point to them by their quest links and describe what each one asks for.[3][4]
Main questline, part 1
There are only two Iron Furnaces quests here, and they come in order. The first, a quest in "?", accepts any one of these: an Iron Furnace, a Copper Furnace, a Stone to Iron Furnace Upgrade or a Stone to Copper Furnace Upgrade. It unlocks after an earlier main-line quest that isn't part of this mod's list.[3]
Next comes a quest in "?", which accepts any one augment: Augment: Blasting, Augment: Smoking, Augment: Factory, Augment: Generator, Augment: Speed or Augment: Fuel Efficiency.[3]
Generators chapter: the furnace tiers
This chapter is where most of the mod's quests live. It starts with two quests that both unlock after a quest outside this mod's list: a quest in "?" for the Iron Furnace and a quest in "?" for the Copper Furnace.[4]
Once you've done both, a handful of quests open up. You don't have to do them in any set order:[4]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Silver Furnace.[4]
- a quest in "?" lists the Wireless Heat Transmitter and the Wireless Heat Receiver.[4]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Furnace Settings Linker.[4]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Furnace Wrapping Papers.[4]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Furnace Spooka-lator.[4]
The furnace tiers then form a chain. a quest in "?" (the Golden Furnace) needs the iron furnace and silver furnace quests. a quest in "?" (the Diamond Furnace) follows the gold quest. After the diamond quest, you can do a quest in "?" for the Crystal Furnace and a quest in "?" for the Emerald Furnace.[4]
Both of those lead to a quest in "?" for the Obsidian Furnace. That is followed by a quest in "?" for the Netherite Furnace, and then a quest in "?" for the Rainbow Core.[4]
Generators chapter: the Rainbow finale
a quest in "?" asks for 8 Rainbow Plating. It requires the gold, diamond, crystal, emerald, obsidian, silver, iron and copper furnace quests.[4]
With the plating quest and the Rainbow Core quest done, a quest in "?" asks for the Rainbow Furnace. After that, a quest in "?" asks for Rainbow Coal.[4]
There's also a collection quest, a quest in "?", that lists the Rainbow, copper, iron, silver, gold, diamond, emerald, crystal and obsidian furnaces. It opens once all the furnace-tier quests and the Rainbow Furnace quest are done.[4]
Generators chapter: augments
The augments sit in their own branch, separate from the furnace chain. All five quests unlock after the same earlier quest, which isn't one of this mod's quests, so you can take them in any order:[4]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Augment: Speed.[4]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Augment: Fuel Efficiency.[4]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Augment: Blasting.[4]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Augment: Smoking.[4]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Augment: Factory.[4]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Augment: Generator.[4]
Unverified The sources don't say what these quests reward, and they don't describe the quests that unlock the chapter's entry points, so check those in-game.
Which Iron Furnaces config options matter?
6 parts
Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide
Good news first: every Iron Furnaces option in this pack's common config sits at the mod's default value. The pack changes nothing in this file, so the numbers below are the mod's own numbers, and nothing here is a pack tweak.[12]
Smelting speed
Each furnace has a speed option, which is the number of ticks for one smelting operation. Lower is faster.[12]
- furnaces.iron_furnace.speed is 160 ticks (a regular furnace takes 200).[12]
- furnaces.copper_furnace.speed is 180 ticks.[12]
- furnaces.silver_furnace.speed is 140 ticks.[12]
- furnaces.gold_furnace.speed is 120 ticks.[12]
- furnaces.diamond_furnace.speed is 80 ticks.[12]
- furnaces.emerald_furnace.speed is 40 ticks.[12]
- furnaces.crystal_furnace.speed is 40 ticks.[12]
- furnaces.obsidian_furnace.speed is 20 ticks.[12]
- furnaces.rainbow_furnace.speed is 20 ticks.[12]
- furnaces.netherite_furnace.speed is just 5 ticks.[12]
Furnace tiers
Each furnace also has a tier option, which sets what tier that furnace is. The tier decides which energy storage option applies to it.[12]
- furnaces.iron_furnace.tier is 0.[12]
- furnaces.copper_furnace.tier is 0.[12]
- furnaces.silver_furnace.tier is 1.[12]
- furnaces.gold_furnace.tier is 1.[12]
- furnaces.diamond_furnace.tier is 2.[12]
- furnaces.emerald_furnace.tier is 2.[12]
- furnaces.crystal_furnace.tier is 2.[12]
- furnaces.obsidian_furnace.tier is 2.[12]
- furnaces.netherite_furnace.tier is 2.[12]
- furnaces.million_furnace.tier is 2.[12]
Energy storage
- furnaces.energy.tier_0 is 80,000, the energy tier 0 furnaces can store.[12]
- furnaces.energy.tier_1 is 200,000 for tier 1 furnaces.[12]
- furnaces.energy.tier_2 is 1,000,000 for tier 2 furnaces.[12]
Energy generation
Each furnace also has a generation option, the RF it generates per tick.[12]
- furnaces.iron_furnace.generation is 40.[12]
- furnaces.copper_furnace.generation is 40.[12]
- furnaces.silver_furnace.generation is 100.[12]
- furnaces.gold_furnace.generation is 160.[12]
- furnaces.diamond_furnace.generation is 240.[12]
- furnaces.emerald_furnace.generation is 320.[12]
- furnaces.crystal_furnace.generation is 360.[12]
- furnaces.obsidian_furnace.generation is 500.[12]
- furnaces.netherite_furnace.generation is 1,000.[12]
- furnaces.rainbow_furnace.generation is 2,000.[12]
- furnaces.rainbow_furnace.rainbow_generation is 50,000. The config describes it as how much power the Rainbow Furnace will generate.[12]
Modded furnaces
The Allthemodium, Vibranium and Unobtainium furnaces live in their own config section. On top of speed and generation they have a mult option, the number of items smelted at once.[12]
- modded_furnaces.allthemodium_furnace.speed is 5 ticks.[12]
- modded_furnaces.allthemodium_furnace.mult is 16 items at once (a regular furnace smelts 1).[12]
- modded_furnaces.allthemodium_furnace.generation is 2,000 RF per tick.[12]
- modded_furnaces.vibranium_furnace.speed is 3 ticks.[12]
- modded_furnaces.vibranium_furnace.mult is 32 items at once.[12]
- modded_furnaces.vibranium_furnace.generation is 3,000 RF per tick.[12]
- modded_furnaces.unobtainium_furnace.speed is 1 tick.[12]
- modded_furnaces.unobtainium_furnace.mult is 64 items at once.[12]
- modded_furnaces.unobtainium_furnace.generation is 5,000 RF per tick.[12]
Other options
furnaces.recipeMaxXPLevel.level is 100. That is the number of experience levels a furnace can store in a recipe before the excess is voided, and the config notes that 100 levels is 30,971 XP.[12]
What changed in Iron Furnaces between versions?
1 part
