What is Iron Furnaces?
1 part
Iron Furnaces is a furnace upgrade mod inspired by cpw's Iron Chests. It adds several tiers of furnace, with a focus on smelting speed and efficiency, reconfigurable sides, and augments for things like smoking and blasting. The pack ships version 4.3.2.[1][2]
It's for you if you want to smelt more efficiently than a plain furnace allows. You start with the Iron Furnace, and the Stone to Iron Furnace Upgrade is there if you'd rather upgrade a stone furnace than start from scratch.[1][3]
Where it fits in the progression
You meet this mod very early. In the opening quest chapter, "Iron Furnaces" quest asks you to get either the Iron Furnace or the Stone to Iron Furnace Upgrade. It unlocks after another quest in that same chapter.[3]
The next quest, "Furnace Augments" quest, follows straight after. It is completed by getting any one of these augments:[3]
- Augment: Blasting[3]
- Augment: Smoking[3]
- Augment: Factory[3]
- Augment: Generator[3]
- Augment: Speed[3]
- Augment: Fuel Efficiency[3]
The mod comes up again in the power chapter. "Iron Furnace Generator" quest there has you obtain the Augment: Generator specifically.[4]
Unverified The quest rewards, the in-pack recipes for each furnace tier and augment, and any pack-specific config changes were not in the sources for this section, so they are not covered here.
How do you get started with Iron Furnaces?
3 parts
Getting started with Iron Furnaces is quick. The pack's Beginning chapter has a quest for the mod, and it asks for the Iron Furnace.[3]
First: make an Iron Furnace
Quest "Iron Furnaces" quest is completed by having either the Iron Furnace or the Stone to Iron Furnace Upgrade. Either one counts, so pick whichever is easier for you. Here is the direct craft:[3]

If you would rather upgrade a furnace you already have, craft the Stone to Iron Furnace Upgrade and sneak and right-click the furnace with it. Its name says it takes a stone furnace to an Iron Furnace.[5][6]

Next: craft an augment
The next quest, "Furnace Augments" quest, comes after the Iron Furnace quest. It accepts any one of these augments: Blasting, Smoking, Factory, Generator, Speed or Fuel Efficiency. You right-click to insert an augment into a furnace.[3][6]
For a first pick, Augment: Speed is the simplest. It halves the cooktime for all recipes, but the furnace uses up twice the amount of fuel.[5][6]

If fuel is your bottleneck, look at Augment: Fuel Efficiency instead. Fuel heats up the furnace twice as much, but the cooktime is slowed down by 25% for all recipes.[5][6]

Then: climb the tiers
Once the Iron Furnace is running, you can keep going up the tiers. Each tier has its own furnace and matching upgrade items, for example the Copper Furnace and Silver Furnace. The pack changes the Copper Furnace recipe, so go by the one below and not by what you remember from the mod's defaults.[5]

This recipe is changed by the pack.
One more handy item for later is the Wireless Heat Receiver. You place it in the fuel slot of a furnace, and it only works from Iron tier and above. It links to a Wireless Heat Transmitter, which you power with Forge Energy.[6]
How does Iron Furnaces work?
8 parts
Iron Furnaces is built around one idea: a ladder of furnaces that smelt faster the higher you climb, plus augments that change how each furnace behaves. This section covers tiers, speed, power, augments and the wireless heat system, using this pack's settings.[1][7]
Tiers and energy buffers
Every furnace has a tier from 0 to 2. The tier decides how much energy the furnace can store: 80,000 for tier 0, 200,000 for tier 1 and 1,000,000 for tier 2. The pack leaves these values at the mod defaults.[7]
- Tier 0: Copper Furnace and Iron Furnace.[5][7]
- Tier 1: Golden Furnace and Silver Furnace.[5][7]
- Tier 2: Diamond Furnace, Emerald Furnace, Crystal Furnace, Obsidian Furnace, Netherite Furnace and Rainbow Furnace. The Allthemodium and Unobtainium furnaces from the modded furnace options are also tier 2.[5][7]
Smelting speed
Each furnace has a speed setting, which is the number of ticks one smelting operation takes. A regular furnace takes 200 ticks, so lower is faster. The pack's values are identical to the mod defaults.[7]
- Copper 180, Iron 160, Silver 140, Gold 120.[7]
- Diamond 80, Emerald 40, Crystal 40.[7]
- Obsidian 20, Rainbow 20, Netherite 5.[7]
The Allthemodium and Unobtainium furnaces also have a multiplier, which is how many items they smelt at once. Allthemodium smelts 16 items at once at 5 ticks per operation. Unobtainium smelts 64 at once at 1 tick per operation.[7]
Augments
Augments are items you right-click onto a furnace to insert them. Each one has an upside and a downside, so pick them for the job the furnace is doing.[6]
- Augment: Speed: halves the cooktime for all recipes, but uses twice the fuel.[5][6]
- Augment: Fuel Efficiency: fuel heats the furnace twice as much, but cooktime for all recipes is 25% slower.[5][6]
- Augment: Blasting and Augment: Smoking: restrict the furnace to blasting recipes only or smoking recipes only.[5][6]
- Augment: Factory: converts the furnace into a factory. It uses power for heat instead of fuel.[5][6]
- Augment: Generator: heat from the furnace generates power, but the furnace can no longer smelt items.[5][6]
Crafting Shaped

| any stone | any redstone dust | any stone |
Recipe id: ironfurnaces:augments/augment_speed
There are also redstone augments with four modes. Control mode will not smelt while it receives a redstone signal. Inverse Control mode only smelts while it receives a signal. Comparator mode acts as an internal comparator and outputs the signal to all sides. Comparator Subtraction mode works the same way, but you set the subtracted signal strength in the furnace GUI. Right-click in the air to change mode.[6]
The experience augments have two modes. In one, smelting experience is ejected to nearby fluid tanks. In the other, it goes to the player who placed the furnace. Sneak and right-click in the air to switch between them.[6]
Furnaces can also store experience inside the recipes they have run. The pack leaves the cap at 100 levels, about 30,971 XP. Anything beyond that is voided.[7]
Power generation
With the generator augment, each furnace produces RF per tick based on its generation setting. These are the pack's values, and they match the mod defaults.[6][7]
- Copper 40, Iron 40, Silver 100, Gold 160.[7]
- Diamond 240, Emerald 320, Crystal 360.[7]
- Obsidian 500, Netherite 1,000, Rainbow 2,000.[7]
- Allthemodium 2,000, Unobtainium 5,000.[7]
The Rainbow Furnace
The Rainbow Furnace has its own generator mode, and the rules are stricter. For power generation, one of each tier of furnace must be an active generator and not have a full buffer. It outputs energy to any side configured as output and does not add energy to its internal buffer. You can only have one Rainbow Generator.[5][6]
The pack sets the Rainbow Furnace's generation at 50,000 through furnaces.rainbow_furnace.rainbow_generation. The tooltip describes this as RF per tick when all the other furnaces are generating power.[6][7]

Wireless heat
The Wireless Heat Transmitter (Wireless Heat Transmitter) powers any bound Wireless Heat Receiver (Wireless Heat Receiver). To link them, place the receiver in the transmitter. Then give the transmitter Forge Energy and it powers every receiver bound to it. A transmitter shows that it has yet to be bound to an energy source until you set that up.[6]
Put the receiver in the fuel slot of the furnace. The tooltip says it only works from Iron tier and above.[6]

Item transfer and automation
The furnace GUI has configurable sides for item transfer, so you can choose which faces take items in and which push them out.[6]
Pack notes
The pack changed the crafting recipes for the Copper Furnace, Silver Furnace (both recipes) and Netherite Furnace. The other furnace and augment recipes are the mod's own. Furnace light is on by default in the pack, because misc.misc.lightupdates is false.[5][7]
How do you progress through Iron Furnaces?
5 parts
Iron Furnaces is a ladder of furnace tiers. In this pack it starts at the Iron Furnace and Copper Furnace and runs up to the Rainbow Furnace. Most tiers have both a furnace recipe and an upgrade item, such as the Iron to Gold Furnace Upgrade, so you can pick whichever route suits what you have.[5]
What the quests cover
The quests in the sources only cover the first step. In The Beginning chapter, "Iron Furnaces" quest asks for either an Iron Furnace or a Stone to Iron Furnace Upgrade, and it comes after an earlier quest in that chapter. After that, "Furnace Augments" quest accepts any one of the augments: Blasting, Smoking, Factory, Generator, Speed or Fuel Efficiency.[3]
The Power chapter has its own quest, "Iron Furnace Generator" quest, which asks for the Augment: Generator. The quest sources show nothing for the furnace tiers above Iron, so from there you are following the recipes below.[4]
Early tiers: Copper, Iron, Silver and Gold
The Stone to Iron Furnace Upgrade and Stone to Copper Furnace Upgrade take a basic furnace up to Iron or Copper. If you already have a Copper Furnace, the Copper to Iron Furnace Upgrade or the Copper to Silver Furnace Upgrade moves it up. An Iron Furnace can go to Silver with the Iron to Silver Furnace Upgrade.[5]
The Golden Furnace can be reached from either an Iron Furnace (Iron to Gold Furnace Upgrade) or a Silver Furnace (Silver to Gold Furnace Upgrade). Both routes work, so pick whichever metal you have more of.[5]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Iron Furnaces?
3 parts
Iron Furnaces shows up in the "the_beginning" and "power" quest chapters in this pack. None of these quests has a title, so you'll spot them by their ids and by the items they ask for.[3][4]
The Beginning
The mod's quests in this chapter come one after the other. The earlier one, "Iron Furnaces" quest, unlocks after another quest in the chapter. It asks for either an Iron Furnace or a Stone to Iron Furnace Upgrade, so you can pick whichever route suits you.[3]
Once that's done, "Furnace Augments" quest opens up. It asks for an augment, and any of these will do:[3]
- Augment: Blasting[3]
- Augment: Smoking[3]
- Augment: Factory[3]
- Augment: Generator[3]
- Augment: Speed[3]
- Augment: Fuel Efficiency[3]
Power
The "power" chapter has a quest for this mod, "Iron Furnace Generator" quest. It asks for the Augment: Generator. The quest data shows no prerequisite for it.[4]
Suggested order
- Get an Iron Furnace or the Stone to Iron Furnace Upgrade for "Iron Furnaces" quest, after finishing the quest it follows in the chapter.[3]
- Get any augment from the list for "Furnace Augments" quest.[3]
- Get the Generator augment for "Iron Furnace Generator" quest in the power chapter.[4]
Which Iron Furnaces config options matter?
6 parts
Good news first: every Iron Furnaces option in this pack's common config sits at the mod's default value. The pack changes nothing in this file, so the numbers below are the mod's own numbers, and nothing here is a pack tweak.[7]
Smelting speed
Each furnace has a speed option, which is the number of ticks for one smelting operation. Lower is faster.[7]
- furnaces.iron_furnace.speed is 160 ticks (a regular furnace takes 200).[7]
- furnaces.copper_furnace.speed is 180 ticks.[7]
- furnaces.silver_furnace.speed is 140 ticks.[7]
- furnaces.gold_furnace.speed is 120 ticks.[7]
- furnaces.diamond_furnace.speed is 80 ticks.[7]
- furnaces.emerald_furnace.speed is 40 ticks.[7]
- furnaces.crystal_furnace.speed is 40 ticks.[7]
- furnaces.obsidian_furnace.speed is 20 ticks.[7]
- furnaces.rainbow_furnace.speed is 20 ticks.[7]
- furnaces.netherite_furnace.speed is just 5 ticks.[7]
Furnace tiers
Each furnace also has a tier option, which sets what tier that furnace is. The tier decides which energy storage option applies to it.[7]
- furnaces.iron_furnace.tier is 0.[7]
- furnaces.copper_furnace.tier is 0.[7]
- furnaces.silver_furnace.tier is 1.[7]
- furnaces.gold_furnace.tier is 1.[7]
- furnaces.diamond_furnace.tier is 2.[7]
- furnaces.emerald_furnace.tier is 2.[7]
- furnaces.crystal_furnace.tier is 2.[7]
- furnaces.obsidian_furnace.tier is 2.[7]
- furnaces.netherite_furnace.tier is 2.[7]
- furnaces.million_furnace.tier is 2.[7]
Energy storage
- furnaces.energy.tier_0 is 80,000, the energy tier 0 furnaces can store.[7]
- furnaces.energy.tier_1 is 200,000 for tier 1 furnaces.[7]
- furnaces.energy.tier_2 is 1,000,000 for tier 2 furnaces.[7]
Energy generation
Each furnace also has a generation option, the RF it generates per tick.[7]
- furnaces.iron_furnace.generation is 40.[7]
- furnaces.copper_furnace.generation is 40.[7]
- furnaces.silver_furnace.generation is 100.[7]
- furnaces.gold_furnace.generation is 160.[7]
- furnaces.diamond_furnace.generation is 240.[7]
- furnaces.emerald_furnace.generation is 320.[7]
- furnaces.crystal_furnace.generation is 360.[7]
- furnaces.obsidian_furnace.generation is 500.[7]
- furnaces.netherite_furnace.generation is 1,000.[7]
- furnaces.rainbow_furnace.generation is 2,000.[7]
- furnaces.rainbow_furnace.rainbow_generation is 50,000. The config describes it as how much power the Rainbow Furnace will generate.[7]
Modded furnaces
The Allthemodium, Vibranium and Unobtainium furnaces live in their own config section. On top of speed and generation they have a mult option, the number of items smelted at once.[7]
- modded_furnaces.allthemodium_furnace.speed is 5 ticks.[7]
- modded_furnaces.allthemodium_furnace.mult is 16 items at once (a regular furnace smelts 1).[7]
- modded_furnaces.allthemodium_furnace.generation is 2,000 RF per tick.[7]
- modded_furnaces.vibranium_furnace.speed is 3 ticks.[7]
- modded_furnaces.vibranium_furnace.mult is 32 items at once.[7]
- modded_furnaces.vibranium_furnace.generation is 3,000 RF per tick.[7]
- modded_furnaces.unobtainium_furnace.speed is 1 tick.[7]
- modded_furnaces.unobtainium_furnace.mult is 64 items at once.[7]
- modded_furnaces.unobtainium_furnace.generation is 5,000 RF per tick.[7]
Other options
furnaces.recipeMaxXPLevel.level is 100. That is the number of experience levels a furnace can store in a recipe before the excess is voided, and the config notes that 100 levels is 30,971 XP.[7]
