What is Iron Furnaces?
1 part
Iron Furnaces is the mod that takes the humble vanilla furnace and gives it a full upgrade ladder. Inspired by cpw's Iron Chests, it adds a stack of furnace tiers that smelt faster, let you reconfigure which sides accept items and fuel, and accept augments that change what the furnace does entirely: smoking, blasting and more.[1]
This pack ships Iron Furnaces 4.2.6, and it has been part of the pack since early builds. The mod has explicit compatibility with JEI and Project MMO, so you can always look up a tier in the recipe viewer if you are not sure what it takes.[1][2]
It is a great fit if you want better smelting before you have a real power grid. The furnaces run on normal fuel, so you can push your processing speed up tier by tier while the rest of your base is still getting off the ground.[1]
Where it fits in the quest book
The main questline points you at Iron Furnaces early: one quest accepts an Iron Furnace, a Copper Furnace, or one of the in-place upgrades (Stone to Iron Furnace Upgrade or Stone to Copper Furnace Upgrade). Finishing that unlocks a follow-up quest that accepts any one augment, so you get nudged into the augment system right away.[3]
The full tree lives in the generators chapter. From copper and iron you branch out to Silver Furnace and Golden Furnace, then Diamond Furnace, Emerald Furnace and Crystal Furnace, then Obsidian Furnace and Netherite Furnace. Past that the chapter keeps going into ATM materials with the Allthemodium Furnace, Vibranium Furnace and finally the Unobtainium Furnace.[4]
There is a separate rainbow branch too. Quests cover Rainbow Plating, the Rainbow Core, the Rainbow Furnace and Rainbow Coal, and the Rainbow Furnace quest also asks you to have every earlier tier in hand at once. Alongside the tiers you will find quests for the Wireless Heat Transmitter and Wireless Heat Receiver pair, the Furnace Settings Linker, and the seasonal Furnace Wrapping Papers and Furnace Spooka-lator cosmetics.[4]
How do you get started with Iron Furnaces?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.5 guide
Iron Furnaces is inspired by cpw's Iron Chests and adds a ladder of furnace tiers, plus augments that change how each furnace works. In All the Mods 10 you'll run into it early, because the main questline asks for your first upgraded furnace right away.[1][6]
Step 1: Your first upgraded furnace
The main questline step a quest in "?" accepts any one of four items: an Iron Furnace, a Copper Furnace, a Stone to Iron Furnace Upgrade or a Stone to Copper Furnace Upgrade. Pick whichever you can afford first. The Iron and Copper Furnaces are also the two starting quests of the generators chapter, a quest in "?" and a quest in "?".[6][7]

Step 2: Grab an augment
Right after that, the main questline step a quest in "?" asks for any one augment. To install an augment, right-click with it on the furnace. The two most useful early picks do opposite things, so choose based on whether you're short on time or on fuel.[6][9]
- Augment: Speed halves the cook time for all recipes, but the furnace uses twice as much fuel.[9]
- Augment: Fuel Efficiency makes fuel heat the furnace twice as much, but cook time for all recipes is 25% slower.[9]
- Augment: Blasting and Augment: Smoking limit the furnace to blasting recipes or to smoking recipes only.[9]
- Augment: Generator turns the furnace's heat into power, but the furnace can no longer smelt. Augment: Factory turns the furnace into a factory that runs on power instead of fuel.[9]

Step 3: Climb the early tiers
The generators chapter continues with the Silver Furnace (a quest in "?"), which unlocks after the Iron and Copper quests. It's followed by the Golden Furnace (a quest in "?") and then the Diamond Furnace. Each tier's recipe uses the furnace from the tier below, so keep your old furnace to upgrade it. You can reach Silver from either an Iron or a Copper Furnace.[7][8]

How does Iron Furnaces work?
6 parts
Iron Furnaces is built around one simple idea taken a long way: a ladder of furnace tiers that smelt faster and take upgrades, plus a slot system that lets you bolt extra behaviour onto any of them. The project describes the goal as maximising smelting efficiency with speed, reconfigurable sides and augments for smoking and blasting, and in this pack that ladder runs all the way from copper up to the Rainbow Furnace.[1]
The tier ladder
Tiers in this pack form a chain, with each step crafted around the tier below it. Starting from a vanilla furnace you can go to Copper Furnace or Iron Furnace, then on through Silver Furnace, Golden Furnace, Diamond Furnace, Emerald Furnace and Crystal Furnace, up to Obsidian Furnace and Netherite Furnace. Several of those steps have two crafting routes, so you can come up the silver side or the gold side depending on what you have spare.[10]
Above netherite the pack keeps going with the All the Mods metals: Allthemodium Furnace, Vibranium Furnace and Unobtainium Furnace, each built on the tier before it. The top of the chain is Rainbow Furnace, which is assembled from Rainbow Core and Rainbow Plating rather than from another furnace.[10]

Augments
Augments are the mod's upgrade items, and their tooltips say to right-click to insert one. Each of the main augments is a trade-off rather than a straight buff, so pick based on what the furnace is doing in your build.[11]
- Augment: Speed halves the cooktime for all recipes, but the furnace uses up twice the amount of fuel.[11]
- Augment: Fuel Efficiency makes fuel heat up the furnace twice as much, at the cost of slowing the cooktime by 25% for all recipes.[11]
- Augment: Blasting restricts the furnace to blasting recipes only, and Augment: Smoking restricts it to smoking recipes only.[11]
- Augment: Factory converts the furnace into a factory and makes it use power for heat instead of fuel.[11]
- Augment: Generator makes heat from the furnace generate power, but the furnace can no longer smelt items.[11]

There is also a redstone augment with several modes, switched by right-clicking in the air. Redstone Control mode stops the furnace smelting while it has a redstone signal, Redstone Inverse Control mode only smelts while it has one, Comparator mode makes the furnace act as an internal comparator and output the signal to all sides, and Comparator Subtraction mode does the same but lets you subtract a signal strength configured in the furnace GUI.[11]
An experience augment handles the XP a furnace builds up. In one mode the experience granted from smelting is ejected to nearby fluid tanks, and in the other it is given to the player who placed the furnace. You swap between the two by sneaking and right-clicking in the air.[11]
Item handling and automation
Iron Furnaces furnaces expose configurable sides for item transfer, which is what lets you feed one from a pipe or conveyor on one face and pull finished output from another instead of relying on the vanilla top/bottom/side rules.[1][11]
The mod has explicit compatibility with JEI and Project MMO, and it ships its own JEI categories so you can look up what a furnace will accept in a given mode.[1][11]
Wireless heat
If you would rather run furnaces off your power grid than off solid fuel, the mod gives you a two-part wireless heat system. Wireless Heat Transmitter is the block: you feed it Forge Energy and it powers every Wireless Heat Receiver bound to it. You bind a receiver by placing it inside the transmitter, then drop that receiver into the fuel slot of the furnace you want to run. Receivers only work from Iron tier and above, so a Copper Furnace cannot use them.[11]

The Rainbow generator
The Rainbow Furnace has a special power mode with strict conditions. For it to generate, one furnace of each tier must be an active generator and must not have a full buffer; the tooltip then lists the RF/tick you get when all of those other furnaces are generating power. Its output goes only to sides you have configured as output and is never added to its own internal buffer, and you can only have one Rainbow Generator.[11]
Extras
Two cosmetic items round things out. Furnace Spooka-lator is right-clicked on a furnace to spookalize it, and sneaking and right-clicking cleanses any spookalizations. Furnace Wrapping Papers wraps a furnace as a gift, and sneaking and right-clicking opens the gift again.[11]
Unverified Furnace Settings Linker is craftable in this pack, but the available sources do not describe exactly which settings it copies or how you apply them, so treat its behaviour as untested until you try it in game.
How do you progress through Iron Furnaces?
6 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.5 guide
Iron Furnaces is a ladder of better and better furnaces, and this pack walks you up that ladder with a full set of quests in the generators chapter. You start with a simple Copper or Iron Furnace and can climb all the way to the Unobtainium Furnace, with the Rainbow Furnace as a side goal once you reach Netherite.[7]
Getting started
Your first Iron Furnaces goal comes from the main questline. a quest in "?" is completed by any one of these four items: an Iron Furnace, a Copper Furnace, a Stone to Iron Furnace Upgrade or a Stone to Copper Furnace Upgrade. The next quest, a quest in "?", is completed by any augment, so it's a good excuse to try out something like Augment: Speed or Augment: Fuel Efficiency early.[6]
Both starter furnaces are made from a regular vanilla furnace, so pick whichever metal you have more of. In the generators chapter, the Iron Furnace and Copper Furnace each have their own quest: a quest in "?" and a quest in "?".[7][8]

The tier ladder
Every furnace tier is crafted from the tier below it, so you can't skip steps. These are the quests in the generators chapter, in the order they unlock:[7][8]
- Copper Furnace and Iron Furnace, your two entry points (a quest in "?" and a quest in "?").[7]
- Silver Furnace (a quest in "?"), which unlocks after both starter furnaces. You can craft it from either a Copper Furnace or an Iron Furnace.[7][8]
- Golden Furnace (a quest in "?"), which you can craft from either an Iron Furnace or a Silver Furnace.[7][8]
- Diamond Furnace (a quest in "?"), crafted from a Golden Furnace.[7][8]
- Emerald Furnace (a quest in "?") and Crystal Furnace (a quest in "?"), two side-by-side tiers that are both crafted from a Diamond Furnace.[7][8]
- Obsidian Furnace (a quest in "?"). You can craft it from either an Emerald Furnace or a Crystal Furnace, but the quest asks you to finish both of those tiers first.[7][8]
- Netherite Furnace (a quest in "?"), crafted from an Obsidian Furnace.[7][8]
- Allthemodium Furnace (a quest in "?"), then Vibranium Furnace (a quest in "?"), then Unobtainium Furnace (a quest in "?"). Each of these is crafted from the tier before it.[7][8]
Alternate routes
Some tiers have a second recipe. That means you can go Copper to Iron, Copper to Silver, Iron to Silver, or Silver to Gold, depending on which metals you have. Obsidian works the same way: it has one recipe that starts from Emerald and another that starts from Crystal.[8]

The Rainbow Furnace
The Rainbow Furnace is a separate goal that branches off at Netherite. First you make a Rainbow Core (a quest in "?"), and its recipe uses up a Netherite Furnace. Then a quest in "?" asks for 8 Rainbow Plating. Each Plating recipe uses up furnaces from the Copper through Obsidian tiers, so be ready to craft a big pile of lower-tier furnaces.[7][8]

There's also a collector quest, a quest in "?", that asks you to hold the Rainbow Furnace plus every tier from Copper up to Netherite at the same time. The Rainbow Furnace and Rainbow Coal also show up as tasks in a second quest chapter of this pack, a quest in "?" and a quest in "?".[7][12]
Upgrade items
Nearly every step on the ladder also has an upgrade item, and its name tells you which step it covers. Examples include Stone to Iron Furnace Upgrade, Gold to Diamond Furnace Upgrade, Crystal to Obsidian Furnace Upgrade and Netherite to Allthemodium Furnace Upgrade. How does Iron Furnaces work with other mods?
4 parts
Iron Furnaces doesn't have a big web of crossovers in this pack, but it does show up as an ingredient in some crafting recipes that the pack itself adds. In each one, an item from this mod goes into something from another mod. These are the ones to know about.[10]
Improbable Probability Device
The Rainbow Furnace is one of the ingredients in the Improbable Probability Device. The rest of the recipe pulls in items from several other mods, including AE2, Mekanism, Modern Industrialization and PneumaticCraft.[10]

Quests and general compatibility
The quest tasks that involve this mod only ask you to obtain Iron Furnaces items, such as furnaces, augments and Rainbow Coal. The Rainbow Furnace and Rainbow Coal also have their own quests in the star chapter, for example a quest in "?" and a quest in "?". None of these tasks mix in items from other mods.[3][4][5]
The mod's own project page says it should be compatible with most mods, and names explicit compatibility with JEI and Project MMO. Beyond the recipes above, I can't confirm any other integrations for this pack.[1]
Which All the Mods 10 quests use Iron Furnaces?
6 parts
Iron Furnaces shows up in three quest chapters in this pack. The quests have no titles, so I'll describe them by what they ask for. The biggest chunk is the "generators" chapter, which walks you from your first furnace up to the top-tier ones.[3][4][5]
Main questline, part 1
- a quest in "?" is your intro. It accepts any one of the Iron Furnace, the Copper Furnace, the Stone to Iron Furnace Upgrade or the Stone to Copper Furnace Upgrade.[3]
- a quest in "?" unlocks after that and accepts any one of the six augments: Augment: Blasting, Augment: Smoking, Augment: Factory, Augment: Generator, Augment: Speed or Augment: Fuel Efficiency.[3]
The "generators" chapter
This chapter starts with two quests: a quest in "?" for the Iron Furnace and a quest in "?" for the Copper Furnace. Once you've done both, several branches open up.[4]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Wireless Heat Transmitter and the Wireless Heat Receiver.[4]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Furnace Settings Linker.[4]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Furnace Wrapping Papers, and a quest in "?" asks for the Furnace Spooka-lator.[4]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Silver Furnace.[4]
Furnace tiers
The main line goes through the metal tiers in order. a quest in "?" (the Golden Furnace) needs the iron furnace and silver furnace quests. a quest in "?" (the Diamond Furnace) comes next. After that, a quest in "?" asks for the Crystal Furnace and a quest in "?" asks for the Emerald Furnace.[4]
Both of those lead to a quest in "?", the Obsidian Furnace. Then a quest in "?" asks for the Netherite Furnace. After that it splits: a quest in "?" asks for the Allthemodium Furnace, then a quest in "?" for the Vibranium Furnace, and finally a quest in "?" for the Unobtainium Furnace.[4]
Rainbow branch
- a quest in "?" asks for 8 Rainbow Plating. It needs the iron, copper, silver, gold, diamond, crystal, emerald and obsidian furnace quests done first.[4]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Rainbow Core and unlocks after the netherite furnace quest.[4]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Rainbow Furnace and needs both the plating and core quests.[4]
- a quest in "?" asks for Rainbow Coal after the rainbow furnace quest.[4]
- a quest in "?" is the collection quest. It lists nine furnaces as separate tasks: Rainbow, Copper, Iron, Silver, Golden, Diamond, Emerald, Crystal and Obsidian.[4]
Augment quests
The chapter also has one quest per augment, and all of them unlock after the same earlier quest: a quest in "?" for Augment: Speed, a quest in "?" for Augment: Fuel Efficiency, a quest in "?" for Augment: Blasting, a quest in "?" for Augment: Smoking, a quest in "?" for Augment: Factory and a quest in "?" for Augment: Generator.[4]
The Star chapter
The chapter "chapter_2_the_star" has two more quests for this mod. a quest in "?" asks for the Rainbow Furnace and a quest in "?" asks for Rainbow Coal. Both unlock after the same earlier quest.[5]
What changed in Iron Furnaces between versions?
2 parts
All the Mods 10 1.1 ships Iron Furnaces 4.2.6. The mod has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 0.32 or earlier, so it isn't a recent addition.[2]
Changes in 4.2.5
The one set of mod changelog notes I have is for 4.2.5, which comes just before the version the pack uses. It had two changes:[2][13]
- Fixed factory furnaces smelting everything instantly.[13]
- The Furnace Settings Linker now copies over the horizontal facing of the furnace.[13]
What's not covered
Unverified There are no pack changelog entries for this mod, and I don't have the mod's own changelog for 4.2.6, so what changed in that version is unverified.
