What is Iron Furnaces?
1 part
Iron Furnaces takes its inspiration from cpw's Iron Chests mod and does for furnaces what that mod did for chests: it adds several tiers of furnace. Better furnaces aren't just faster. You also get reconfigurable sides and augments that turn a furnace toward smoking or blasting. If you smelt anything at all, this mod is for you.[1]
All the Mods 10 4.5 ships Iron Furnaces version 4.3.1. The mod has been in the pack since version 2.25 or earlier.[2]
Where it fits in the pack
You meet this mod very early. The first part of the main questline asks for an Iron Furnace or a Copper Furnace. You can also use the Stone to Iron Furnace Upgrade or the Stone to Copper Furnace Upgrade to complete it. The next quest wants any one of the augments, such as Augment: Speed or Augment: Blasting.[3]
The Generators quest chapter lays out the whole furnace ladder. It starts with the Iron and Copper Furnaces, then moves on to the Silver Furnace and Golden Furnace. From there you go to the Diamond Furnace, then the Emerald Furnace and Crystal Furnace, then the Obsidian Furnace and finally the Netherite Furnace. After Netherite, one branch continues into the Allthemodium Furnace, Vibranium Furnace and Unobtainium Furnace.[4]
The other branch after Netherite leads to the big prize, the Rainbow Furnace. You need 8 Rainbow Plating (a quest in "?") and a Rainbow Core (a quest in "?") before the Rainbow Furnace quest (a quest in "?") opens up. After that comes Rainbow Coal. There's also a collector quest (a quest in "?") that asks you to hold the Rainbow Furnace together with the full set of furnaces from Copper up to Netherite.[4]
The same chapter has quests for the handy extras too. These include the Wireless Heat Transmitter paired with the Wireless Heat Receiver, the Furnace Settings Linker, and the seasonal Furnace Spooka-lator and Furnace Wrapping Papers.[4]
The Rainbow items come up again later. The pack's chapter 2 Star quest chapter includes quests for the Rainbow Furnace (a quest in "?") and for Rainbow Coal (a quest in "?").[5]
How do you get started with Iron Furnaces?
3 parts
Iron Furnaces is inspired by cpw's Iron Chests and adds a ladder of furnace tiers, plus augments that change how each furnace works. In All the Mods 10 you'll run into it early, because the main questline asks for your first upgraded furnace right away.[1][3]
Step 1: Your first upgraded furnace
The main questline step a quest in "?" accepts any one of four items: an Iron Furnace, a Copper Furnace, a Stone to Iron Furnace Upgrade or a Stone to Copper Furnace Upgrade. Pick whichever you can afford first. The Iron and Copper Furnaces are also the two starting quests of the generators chapter, a quest in "?" and a quest in "?".[3][4]

Step 2: Grab an augment
Right after that, the main questline step a quest in "?" asks for any one augment. To install an augment, right-click with it on the furnace. The two most useful early picks do opposite things, so choose based on whether you're short on time or on fuel.[3][7]
- Augment: Speed halves the cook time for all recipes, but the furnace uses twice as much fuel.[7]
- Augment: Fuel Efficiency makes fuel heat the furnace twice as much, but cook time for all recipes is 25% slower.[7]
- Augment: Blasting and Augment: Smoking limit the furnace to blasting recipes or to smoking recipes only.[7]
- Augment: Generator turns the furnace's heat into power, but the furnace can no longer smelt. Augment: Factory turns the furnace into a factory that runs on power instead of fuel.[7]

Step 3: Climb the early tiers
The generators chapter continues with the Silver Furnace (a quest in "?"), which unlocks after the Iron and Copper quests. It's followed by the Golden Furnace (a quest in "?") and then the Diamond Furnace. Each tier's recipe uses the furnace from the tier below, so keep your old furnace to upgrade it. You can reach Silver from either an Iron or a Copper Furnace.[4][6]

How does Iron Furnaces work?
8 parts
Iron Furnaces takes the humble vanilla furnace and turns it into a whole upgrade path. Inspired by Iron Chests, it adds a series of furnace tiers that smelt faster, plus side configuration, augments for smoking and blasting, and a lot more. Here's how all of those systems fit together in this pack.[1]
Furnace speed, power and tiers
Each furnace has a few key config values. Speed is the number of ticks one smelting operation takes, and a regular vanilla furnace takes 200 ticks, so lower is faster. Generation is how much RF the furnace makes per tick. Tier is a number from 0 to 2 that decides the furnace's energy buffer.[8]
- Copper Furnace: 180 ticks per smelt, 40 RF per tick, tier 0.[6][8]
- Iron Furnace: 160 ticks per smelt, 40 RF per tick, tier 0.[6][8]
- Silver Furnace: 140 ticks per smelt, 100 RF per tick, tier 1.[6][8]
- Golden Furnace: 120 ticks per smelt, 160 RF per tick, tier 1.[6][8]
- Diamond Furnace: 80 ticks per smelt, 240 RF per tick, tier 2 in this pack.[6][8]
- Emerald Furnace: 40 ticks per smelt, 320 RF per tick, tier 2 in this pack.[6][8]
- Crystal Furnace: 40 ticks per smelt, 360 RF per tick, tier 2.[6][8]
- Obsidian Furnace: 20 ticks per smelt, 500 RF per tick, tier 2.[6][8]
- Netherite Furnace: 5 ticks per smelt, 1,000 RF per tick, tier 2.[6][8]
- Rainbow Furnace: 20 ticks per smelt, 2,000 RF per tick, tier 2.[8]
- Allthemodium Furnace: 5 ticks per smelt, 2,000 RF per tick, tier 2.[6][8]
- Unobtainium Furnace: 5,000 RF per tick.[6][8]
Speaking of buffers: tier 0 furnaces store 80,000 energy, tier 1 furnaces store 200,000 and tier 2 furnaces store 1,000,000. These come from furnaces.energy.tier_0, furnaces.energy.tier_1 and furnaces.energy.tier_2.[8]
Smelting many items at once
The modded-metal furnaces don't just smelt fast, they smelt in bulk. A regular furnace handles one item at a time, but the Allthemodium Furnace smelts 16 items at once and the Unobtainium Furnace smelts 64 at once, set by modded_furnaces.allthemodium_furnace.mult and modded_furnaces.unobtainium_furnace.mult.[8]
Augments
Augments are items that change how a furnace behaves. You right-click with one to insert it into a furnace. Most augments come with a trade-off, so choose based on what that furnace is for.[7]
- Augment: Speed halves the cook time for all recipes, but uses up twice the amount of fuel.[6][7]
- Augment: Fuel Efficiency makes fuel heat up the furnace twice as much, but slows down the cook time by 25% for all recipes.[6][7]
- Augment: Blasting makes the furnace only accept blasting recipes.[6][7]
- Augment: Smoking makes the furnace only accept smoking recipes.[6][7]
- Augment: Generator turns the furnace's heat into power, but the furnace can no longer smelt items.[6][7]
- Augment: Factory converts the furnace into a factory that uses power for heat instead of fuel.[6][7]

Automation and redstone
The furnaces have configurable sides for item transfer, so you can decide which faces accept input and which push out results.[1][7]
There are also several redstone modes for controlling a furnace:[7]
- Redstone Control mode: the furnace will not smelt while it gets a redstone signal.[7]
- Redstone Inverse Control mode: the furnace will only smelt while it gets a redstone signal.[7]
- Comparator mode: the furnace acts as an internal comparator and outputs the signal to all sides.[7]
- Comparator Subtraction mode: works like Comparator mode, but subtracts a signal strength that you set in the furnace GUI.[7]
Wireless heat
If you'd rather run furnaces on power than on fuel items, the wireless heat system is your friend. The Wireless Heat Transmitter takes in Forge Energy and powers every Wireless Heat Receiver bound to it.[7]
- Place the Wireless Heat Transmitter and supply it with Forge Energy.[7]
- Bind a Wireless Heat Receiver by placing it in the Wireless Heat Transmitter. An unbound receiver says it has yet to be bound to an energy source.[7]
- Put the bound receiver in the fuel slot of your furnace. It only works from Iron tier and above.[7]

The Rainbow Furnace as a generator
The Rainbow Furnace has a special generator mode. It can produce 50,000 RF per tick, set by furnaces.rainbow_furnace.rainbow_generation, but only if all your other furnaces are generating power. More precisely, one of each tier of furnace must be an active generator that doesn't have a full buffer.[7][8]
The Rainbow Generator pushes energy out of any side set as an output and doesn't add it to its internal buffer, so make sure something is connected to take it. You can only have one Rainbow Generator.[7]

Experience
Furnaces store the experience from recipes you smelt, but only up to a cap. In this pack furnaces.recipeMaxXPLevel.level is 100 levels, which is 30,971 XP, and anything past that is voided. Collect your XP before a long smelting run fills it up.[8]
Light and cosmetics
This pack sets misc.misc.lightupdates to true. According to the config's own description, true disables light updates, which means the furnaces no longer emit light.[8]
- Furnace Spooka-lator: right-click a furnace to spookalize it, and sneak-right-click to cleanse it again.[6][7]
- Furnace Wrapping Papers: right-click a furnace to wrap it as a gift, and sneak-right-click to open the gift.[6][7]
How do you progress through Iron Furnaces?
6 parts
Iron Furnaces is a ladder of better and better furnaces, and this pack walks you up that ladder with a full set of quests in the generators chapter. You start with a simple Copper or Iron Furnace and can climb all the way to the Unobtainium Furnace, with the Rainbow Furnace as a side goal once you reach Netherite.[4]
Getting started
Your first Iron Furnaces goal comes from the main questline. a quest in "?" is completed by any one of these four items: an Iron Furnace, a Copper Furnace, a Stone to Iron Furnace Upgrade or a Stone to Copper Furnace Upgrade. The next quest, a quest in "?", is completed by any augment, so it's a good excuse to try out something like Augment: Speed or Augment: Fuel Efficiency early.[3]
Both starter furnaces are made from a regular vanilla furnace, so pick whichever metal you have more of. In the generators chapter, the Iron Furnace and Copper Furnace each have their own quest: a quest in "?" and a quest in "?".[4][6]

The tier ladder
Every furnace tier is crafted from the tier below it, so you can't skip steps. These are the quests in the generators chapter, in the order they unlock:[4][6]
- Copper Furnace and Iron Furnace, your two entry points (a quest in "?" and a quest in "?").[4]
- Silver Furnace (a quest in "?"), which unlocks after both starter furnaces. You can craft it from either a Copper Furnace or an Iron Furnace.[4][6]
- Golden Furnace (a quest in "?"), which you can craft from either an Iron Furnace or a Silver Furnace.[4][6]
- Diamond Furnace (a quest in "?"), crafted from a Golden Furnace.[4][6]
- Emerald Furnace (a quest in "?") and Crystal Furnace (a quest in "?"), two side-by-side tiers that are both crafted from a Diamond Furnace.[4][6]
- Obsidian Furnace (a quest in "?"). You can craft it from either an Emerald Furnace or a Crystal Furnace, but the quest asks you to finish both of those tiers first.[4][6]
- Netherite Furnace (a quest in "?"), crafted from an Obsidian Furnace.[4][6]
- Allthemodium Furnace (a quest in "?"), then Vibranium Furnace (a quest in "?"), then Unobtainium Furnace (a quest in "?"). Each of these is crafted from the tier before it.[4][6]
Alternate routes
Some tiers have a second recipe. That means you can go Copper to Iron, Copper to Silver, Iron to Silver, or Silver to Gold, depending on which metals you have. Obsidian works the same way: it has one recipe that starts from Emerald and another that starts from Crystal.[6]

The Rainbow Furnace
The Rainbow Furnace is a separate goal that branches off at Netherite. First you make a Rainbow Core (a quest in "?"), and its recipe uses up a Netherite Furnace. Then a quest in "?" asks for 8 Rainbow Plating. Each Plating recipe uses up furnaces from the Copper through Obsidian tiers, so be ready to craft a big pile of lower-tier furnaces.[4][6]

The Rainbow Furnace and Rainbow Coal also show up as tasks in a second quest chapter of this pack, a quest in "?" and a quest in "?".[4][5]
Upgrade items
Nearly every step on the ladder also has an upgrade item, and its name tells you which step it covers. Examples include Stone to Iron Furnace Upgrade, Gold to Diamond Furnace Upgrade, Crystal to Obsidian Furnace Upgrade and Netherite to Allthemodium Furnace Upgrade. Where Iron Furnaces shows up in the quests
The main questline introduces the mod early. a quest in "?" accepts an Iron Furnace, a Copper Furnace, an Stone to Iron Furnace Upgrade or an Stone to Copper Furnace Upgrade. Right after it, a quest in "?" asks for any one augment, such as Augment: Speed or Augment: Generator.[3]
The generators chapter walks you through the whole furnace ladder, from iron and copper up to the Unobtainium Furnace. It also covers tools like the Wireless Heat Transmitter and Wireless Heat Receiver pair in a quest in "?" and the Furnace Settings Linker in a quest in "?".[4]
The rainbow items also appear in the chapter_2_the_star quest chapter: a quest in "?" asks for the Rainbow Furnace and a quest in "?" asks for Rainbow Coal.[5]
Other compatibility
The mod's project page says Iron Furnaces should work with most mods and lists explicit compatibility with JEI and Project MMO.[1]
Which All the Mods 10 quests use Iron Furnaces?
5 parts
Iron Furnaces appears in three quest chapters in this pack: the first part of the main questline, the generators chapter (where most of the mod's quests live), and chapter_2_the_star. Here's what each one asks for and how the quests unlock.[3][4][5]
Main questline, part 1
Your first Iron Furnaces quest here is a quest in "?". It's flexible: hand in any one of an Iron Furnace, a Copper Furnace, a Stone to Iron Furnace Upgrade or a Stone to Copper Furnace Upgrade. The upgrade items count, so you can convert a furnace you've already placed instead of building a new one.[3]
Completing it unlocks a quest in "?". This one also accepts any single augment: Augment: Blasting, Augment: Smoking, Augment: Factory, Augment: Generator, Augment: Speed or Augment: Fuel Efficiency.[3]
Generators chapter: the furnace tiers
This is the big one. The generators chapter walks you up the whole furnace ladder, one quest per tier. The path runs like this:[4]
- Start with a quest in "?" for an Iron Furnace and a quest in "?" for a Copper Furnace. Both unlock from the same earlier quest in the chapter.[4]
- Finishing both opens a quest in "?", which asks for a Silver Furnace.[4]
- With the Iron and Silver quests done, a quest in "?" asks for a Golden Furnace.[4]
- Gold leads to a quest in "?" for a Diamond Furnace.[4]
- Diamond branches into two quests: a quest in "?" for a Crystal Furnace and a quest in "?" for an Emerald Furnace.[4]
- You need both of those done before a quest in "?" for an Obsidian Furnace.[4]
- Obsidian unlocks a quest in "?" for a Netherite Furnace.[4]
- From Netherite, the high-tier line continues with a quest in "?" for an Allthemodium Furnace, then a quest in "?" for a Vibranium Furnace, and finally a quest in "?" for an Unobtainium Furnace.[4]
Generators chapter: the Rainbow branch
The Rainbow Furnace is the chapter's big payoff, and it pulls from almost every tier. a quest in "?" asks for 8 Rainbow Plating, and it unlocks only once you've finished the Iron, Copper, Silver, Gold, Diamond, Crystal, Emerald and Obsidian furnace quests. Separately, the Netherite quest unlocks a quest in "?", which asks for a Rainbow Core.[4]
With the plating and core quests done, a quest in "?" asks for the Rainbow Furnace itself. That opens a quest in "?" for Rainbow Coal.[4]
Last comes the collector's quest, a quest in "?". It wants one of each: Rainbow, Copper, Iron, Silver, Gold, Diamond, Emerald, Crystal, Obsidian and Netherite furnaces. It unlocks after all of those tier quests, including the Rainbow Furnace quest. Keep a spare of each furnace around instead of upgrading every one in place.[4]
Generators chapter: side quests
- Once the Iron and Copper furnace quests are done, several extras open up. a quest in "?" asks for both the Wireless Heat Transmitter and the Wireless Heat Receiver.[4]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Furnace Settings Linker. It opens after the same Iron and Copper quests.[4]
- There are also two cosmetic quests: a quest in "?" for Furnace Wrapping Papers and a quest in "?" for the Furnace Spooka-lator. Both open after the Iron and Copper quests.[4]
- Each augment has its own quest: a quest in "?" (Generator), a quest in "?" (Smoking), a quest in "?" (Factory), a quest in "?" (Fuel Efficiency), a quest in "?" (Blasting) and a quest in "?" (Speed). They all unlock from the same prerequisite quest, which isn't one of the Iron Furnaces quests.[4]
Chapter 2: the Star
The chapter_2_the_star chapter has two Iron Furnaces quests: a quest in "?" asks for a Rainbow Furnace, and a quest in "?" asks for Rainbow Coal. Both unlock from the same earlier quest in that chapter, which isn't one of the Iron Furnaces quests.[5]
Which Iron Furnaces config options matter?
4 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide
Iron Furnaces keeps nearly all of its settings in one file, and All the Mods 10 leaves most of them at the mod's defaults. There is one change you'll notice, though, and it makes two mid-game furnaces better than they would be in other packs. Here's what matters and how this pack sets it.[9]
What All the Mods 10 changed
The pack moves the Diamond and Emerald furnaces from tier 1 up to tier 2. You can see this in furnaces.diamond_furnace.tier and furnaces.emerald_furnace.tier, which are both set to 2 instead of the mod default of 1. Tier 2 is the highest tier available, the same one used by the Crystal, Obsidian, Netherite and Million furnaces.[9]
The tier decides how much energy a furnace can store. This means your Diamond and Emerald furnaces get the tier 2 buffer of 1,000,000 instead of the tier 1 buffer of 200,000.[9]
- Tier 0 furnaces store 80,000 energy, set by furnaces.energy.tier_0.[9]
- Tier 1 furnaces store 200,000 energy, set by furnaces.energy.tier_1.[9]
- Tier 2 furnaces store 1,000,000 energy, set by furnaces.energy.tier_2.[9]
Speed and RF per furnace
Each furnace has a speed setting, which is the number of ticks it takes to finish one smelt. For comparison, a regular furnace takes 200 ticks. Each furnace also has a generation setting, which is the RF it generates per tick. In this pack, all of these are the mod defaults.[9]
- Copper Furnace: 180 ticks per smelt, 40 RF per tick, tier 0.[9]
- Iron Furnace: 160 ticks per smelt, 40 RF per tick, tier 0.[9]
- Silver Furnace: 140 ticks per smelt, 100 RF per tick, tier 1.[9]
- Gold Furnace: 120 ticks per smelt, 160 RF per tick, tier 1.[9]
- Diamond Furnace: 80 ticks per smelt, 240 RF per tick, tier 2 in this pack.[9]
- Emerald Furnace: 40 ticks per smelt, 320 RF per tick, tier 2 in this pack.[9]
- Crystal Furnace: 40 ticks per smelt, 360 RF per tick, tier 2.[9]
- Obsidian Furnace: 20 ticks per smelt, 500 RF per tick, tier 2.[9]
- Netherite Furnace: 5 ticks per smelt, 1,000 RF per tick, tier 2.[9]
- Rainbow Furnace: 20 ticks per smelt and 2,000 RF per tick. It also has a separate furnaces.rainbow_furnace.rainbow_generation option, set to 50,000, which controls how much power the Rainbow Furnace generates.[9]
The Allthemodium furnaces
The three modded furnaces are all tier 2 and have one extra option called mult. It sets how many items the furnace smelts at once, while a regular furnace smelts only 1. These values are also unchanged from the defaults.[9]
- Allthemodium Furnace: 5 ticks per smelt, 16 items at once, 2,000 RF per tick.[9]
- Vibranium Furnace: 3 ticks per smelt, 32 items at once, 3,000 RF per tick.[9]
- Unobtainium Furnace: 1 tick per smelt, 64 items at once, 5,000 RF per tick.[9]
Other handy options
furnaces.recipeMaxXPLevel.level is set to 100. That's how many levels of experience a furnace can store from its recipes, and 100 levels is 30,971 XP. Once the stored experience reaches that amount, anything extra is voided, so collect your XP now and then.[9]
misc.misc.lightupdates is set to true in this pack. According to the option's own description, true disables light updates, so furnaces no longer emit light. Don't count on them to light up your base.[9]
What changed in Iron Furnaces between versions?
1 part
Iron Furnaces has been in All the Mods 10 for a while. The pack's mod list shows it was first included in All the Mods 10 2.2 or earlier, and All the Mods 10 4.5 ships version 4.3.1 for NeoForge 1.21.1.[2]
Pack updates
- All the Mods 10 3.2: updated Iron Furnaces from 4.2.6 to 4.3.0.[10]
- All the Mods 10 4.5: updated Iron Furnaces from 4.3.0 to 4.3.1.[11]
Unverified The pack changelogs only record the version bumps. The sources here do not include the mod's own changelogs for 4.3.0 and 4.3.1, so what changed in those releases (new features, fixes or balance tweaks) is not shown.
