What is Iron Furnaces?
2 parts
Iron Furnaces adds several tiers of furnace, inspired by cpw's Iron Chests mod. The idea is the same: take something basic and give you upgraded versions of it.[1]
The project page sums up the pitch as smelting with more speed, reconfigurable sides, and augments for smoking and blasting. If you want to push it to the top, the page teases the Rainbow Furnace as the one to craft.[1]
In this pack
The pack ships Iron Furnaces 4.3.2, built for NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1. It has been in the pack since 1.0.3 or earlier, so it is a long-standing part of the mod list.[2]
The mod lists explicit compatibility with JEI and Project MMO, and the project page says it should work with most other mods.[1]
Quest book placement
Unverified The sources here do not show a quest chapter, group or position for Iron Furnaces in this pack's quest book, and they do not show whether the ATM Star path uses it. Check the quest book in game for any placement.
How do you get started with Iron Furnaces?
4 parts
Iron Furnaces adds several tiers of furnace, and the better ones smelt much faster than a regular furnace. The plan is simple: make a better furnace, move up the tiers as you find materials, then tune the furnace with augments.[1][3]
Step 1: Make an Iron Furnace
Your first target is the Iron Furnace. The pack changed this recipe, so use the exact version below rather than relying on memory of the mod.[4]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: ironfurnaces:furnaces/iron_furnace
A regular furnace takes 200 ticks per smelting operation. The Iron Furnace takes 160 in this pack (furnaces.iron_furnace.speed), which matches the mod default. It is tier 0, set by furnaces.iron_furnace.tier.[3]
Step 2: The copper route
You can also start one step lower with the Copper Furnace, which the pack has changed too. It takes 180 ticks per operation (furnaces.copper_furnace.speed) and its tier is 0 (furnaces.copper_furnace.tier).[3][4]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: ironfurnaces:furnaces/copper_furnace
From a Copper Furnace you can make an Iron Furnace with this pack-changed recipe:[4]

Recipe id: ironfurnaces:furnaces/iron_furnace2
There are also upgrade items named for each step, such as Stone to Iron Furnace Upgrade (Stone to Iron) and Stone to Copper Furnace Upgrade (Stone to Copper). The pack changed both recipes.[4][5]

Step 3: Move up the tiers
The next furnaces are the Silver Furnace and the Golden Furnace. Both are tier 1 in the pack config. Silver takes 140 ticks per operation and gold takes 120, so each step is faster than the last.[3][4]

After gold come the Diamond, Emerald, Crystal, Obsidian, Netherite and Rainbow furnaces. Those can wait until you have the materials for them.[3][4]
Finally, add augments
Once you have a furnace you like, augments tune it. Right-click with an augment to insert it. Augment: Speed halves the cooktime for all recipes.[5]
Augment: Blasting and Augment: Smoking restrict a furnace to blasting-only or smoking-only recipes. The pack changed the recipes for both of these.[4][5]
How does Iron Furnaces work?
9 parts
Iron Furnaces adds several tiers of furnace with faster smelting, reconfigurable sides and augments that change how a furnace behaves. The top of the ladder is the Rainbow Furnace.[1]
Speed and power by furnace
Every furnace has a speed, which is the number of ticks it needs for one smelting operation. A regular furnace takes 200 ticks. Every furnace also has a generation value, which is how much RF per tick it makes. This pack leaves all of these values at the mod defaults.[3]
- Copper Furnace: 180 ticks per operation, 40 RF/tick generation. Set in furnaces.copper_furnace.speed and furnaces.copper_furnace.generation.[3][4]
- Iron Furnace: 160 ticks, 40 RF/tick.[3][4]
- Silver Furnace: 140 ticks, 100 RF/tick.[3][4]
- Golden Furnace: 120 ticks, 160 RF/tick.[3][4]
- Diamond Furnace: 80 ticks, 240 RF/tick.[3][4]
- Emerald Furnace: 40 ticks, 320 RF/tick.[3][4]
- Crystal Furnace: 40 ticks, 360 RF/tick.[3][4]
- Obsidian Furnace: 20 ticks, 500 RF/tick.[3][4]
- Netherite Furnace: 5 ticks, 1,000 RF/tick.[3][4]
- Rainbow Furnace (the Rainbow Furnace): 20 ticks, 2,000 RF/tick.[3]
Tiers and energy storage
Each furnace is assigned a tier from 0 to 2. Copper and Iron are tier 0, Silver and Gold are tier 1, and Diamond, Emerald, Crystal, Obsidian, Netherite and Rainbow are tier 2. The energy a furnace can store depends on its tier: 80,000 for tier 0, 200,000 for tier 1 and 1,000,000 for tier 2. Those caps are set in furnaces.energy.tier_0, furnaces.energy.tier_1 and furnaces.energy.tier_2.[3]
Upgrading furnaces
Furnace upgrade items are named for the swap they do. Sneak and right-click a furnace with the upgrade to upgrade it. Examples are Copper to Silver Furnace Upgrade (Copper to Silver) and Silver to Gold Furnace Upgrade (Silver to Gold).[5]
The pack changed several furnace and upgrade recipes, so don't trust other guides for them. Here are the Iron and Silver Furnace recipes as they are in this pack.[4]

Augments
Augments change how a furnace behaves. Right-click to insert one. Some of them trade something away for their benefit, so read the tooltips.[5]
- Augment: Speed halves the cooktime for all recipes, but uses twice the fuel.[5]
- Augment: Fuel Efficiency makes fuel heat the furnace twice as much, but slows the cooktime by 25% for all recipes.[5]
- Augment: Generator makes the heat from the furnace generate power, but the furnace can no longer smelt items.[5]
- Augment: Factory converts the furnace into a factory that uses power for heat instead of fuel.[5]
- Augment: Blasting only allows blasting recipes, and Augment: Smoking only allows smoking recipes.[5]
- Augment: Inventory Config adds configurable sides for item transfer.[5]
The pack changed the recipes for the Fuel Efficiency, Factory, Blasting and Smoking augments. This is the Factory one.[4]
Redstone and experience
A redstone augment has several modes, and you right-click in the air to change mode. Redstone Control mode will NOT smelt while it receives a redstone signal. Redstone Inverse Control mode will ONLY smelt while it receives one. Comparator mode acts as an internal comparator and outputs the signal to all sides. Comparator Subtraction mode is the same, but the signal strength to subtract is set in the furnace GUI.[5]
An experience augment has two modes. In one, experience from smelting is ejected to nearby fluid tanks. In the other, it is given to the player that placed the furnace. Sneak and right-click in the air to switch between them. Experience stored in a recipe is voided once it reaches the level set in furnaces.recipeMaxXPLevel.level, which is 100 levels (30,971 XP) here.[3][5]
Wireless heat
The Wireless Heat Transmitter is a block. Give it Forge Energy and it powers every Wireless Heat Receiver bound to it. You bind a receiver by placing it in the transmitter. To use a receiver, put it in the fuel slot of a furnace. Its tooltip says it only works from Iron tier and above.[5]
The Rainbow Furnace
The Rainbow Furnace works differently from the other furnaces. According to its tooltips, one of each tier of furnace must be an active generator without a full buffer for it to generate power. It outputs energy to any side configured as output and does not add energy to its internal buffer. You can only have one Rainbow Generator.[5]
It has its own value, furnaces.rainbow_furnace.rainbow_generation, set to 50,000 and described as how much power the Rainbow Furnace will generate. That matches the mod default. Its tooltip also mentions RF/tick when all other furnaces are generating power.[3][5]
Crafting it takes a Rainbow Core and Rainbow Plating. The pack changed the plating recipe.[4]

Furnaces this pack removes
The mod also has Allthemodium, Vibranium and Unobtainium furnaces, with config entries under modded_furnaces. In this pack, a server script removes those furnaces' recipes and the matching upgrade recipes, and hides the items from recipe viewers. Don't plan around them.[3][6]
Small settings
In this pack misc.misc.lightupdates is false, so furnaces still emit light. Setting it to true stops them emitting light.[3]
How do you progress through Iron Furnaces?
6 parts
In this pack, Iron Furnaces is a ladder of furnace tiers. Each tier is built on a furnace from the tier before it, and most steps also have an upgrade item. Many of the recipes have been changed by the pack, so don't rely on what you remember from other modpacks.[4]
The tier ladder
- Copper Furnace and Iron Furnace are the entry tiers. The pack changed both recipes, and the Iron Furnace can be made either from a plain furnace or from a Copper Furnace.[4]
- Silver Furnace can be made from a Copper Furnace or from an Iron Furnace. The pack changed both recipes, and both use Silver Ingots.[4]
- Golden Furnace can be built from an Iron Furnace or from a Silver Furnace. Both recipes are pack changes.[4]
- Diamond Furnace is built from a Golden Furnace, and the pack changed this recipe too.[4]
- From the Diamond Furnace the path splits: Emerald Furnace (a pack-changed recipe) or Crystal Furnace (the mod's own recipe).[4]
- Obsidian Furnace can be made from an Emerald Furnace or from a Crystal Furnace. Both use the mod's own recipes.[4]
- Netherite Furnace is built from an Obsidian Furnace, using the mod's own recipe.[4]
- Rainbow Furnace (the Rainbow Furnace) is crafted from a Rainbow Core and Rainbow Plating, and it sits above the Netherite Furnace.[4]

How does Iron Furnaces work with other mods?
3 parts
Iron Furnaces connects to the rest of the pack mostly through its recipes. The pack rewrote several of them to use a silver ingot from another mod, and one Iron Furnaces item is also an ingredient in a talisman recipe.[4]
Silver recipes use FTB Materials silver
The pack changed the recipes for the Silver Furnace so they use Silver Ingot. You can make it from an iron furnace plus colorless glass, or from a copper furnace. Either way, you need that silver ingot.[4]

Rainbow Plating in the horseshoe balloon bundle
Rainbow Plating is also an ingredient in the Bundle of Horseshoe Balloons. The pack added recipes for that bundle in several machines, and each one also uses Amber Horseshoe Balloon and 1,000 Quantum Infusion. You can make it in an Advanced AE reaction chamber, in a Modern Industrialization mixer, or through a Modern Industrialization FTB constructor reaction recipe.[4]

Removed furnaces and upgrades
A pack script removes the recipes for the Allthemodium Furnace, Vibranium Furnace and Unobtainium Furnace. It does the same for their upgrades: Netherite to Allthemodium Furnace Upgrade, Allthemodium to Vibranium Furnace Upgrade and Vibranium to Unobtainium Furnace Upgrade. It also strips their tags and hides them from recipe viewers, so don't expect to find or craft them in this pack.[6]
Which Iron Furnaces config options matter?
6 parts
Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide
Good news first: every Iron Furnaces option in this pack's common config sits at the mod's default value. The pack changes nothing in this file, so the numbers below are the mod's own numbers, and nothing here is a pack tweak.[7]
Smelting speed
Each furnace has a speed option, which is the number of ticks for one smelting operation. Lower is faster.[7]
- furnaces.iron_furnace.speed is 160 ticks (a regular furnace takes 200).[7]
- furnaces.copper_furnace.speed is 180 ticks.[7]
- furnaces.silver_furnace.speed is 140 ticks.[7]
- furnaces.gold_furnace.speed is 120 ticks.[7]
- furnaces.diamond_furnace.speed is 80 ticks.[7]
- furnaces.emerald_furnace.speed is 40 ticks.[7]
- furnaces.crystal_furnace.speed is 40 ticks.[7]
- furnaces.obsidian_furnace.speed is 20 ticks.[7]
- furnaces.rainbow_furnace.speed is 20 ticks.[7]
- furnaces.netherite_furnace.speed is just 5 ticks.[7]
Furnace tiers
Each furnace also has a tier option, which sets what tier that furnace is. The tier decides which energy storage option applies to it.[7]
- furnaces.iron_furnace.tier is 0.[7]
- furnaces.copper_furnace.tier is 0.[7]
- furnaces.silver_furnace.tier is 1.[7]
- furnaces.gold_furnace.tier is 1.[7]
- furnaces.diamond_furnace.tier is 2.[7]
- furnaces.emerald_furnace.tier is 2.[7]
- furnaces.crystal_furnace.tier is 2.[7]
- furnaces.obsidian_furnace.tier is 2.[7]
- furnaces.netherite_furnace.tier is 2.[7]
- furnaces.million_furnace.tier is 2.[7]
Energy storage
- furnaces.energy.tier_0 is 80,000, the energy tier 0 furnaces can store.[7]
- furnaces.energy.tier_1 is 200,000 for tier 1 furnaces.[7]
- furnaces.energy.tier_2 is 1,000,000 for tier 2 furnaces.[7]
Energy generation
Each furnace also has a generation option, the RF it generates per tick.[7]
- furnaces.iron_furnace.generation is 40.[7]
- furnaces.copper_furnace.generation is 40.[7]
- furnaces.silver_furnace.generation is 100.[7]
- furnaces.gold_furnace.generation is 160.[7]
- furnaces.diamond_furnace.generation is 240.[7]
- furnaces.emerald_furnace.generation is 320.[7]
- furnaces.crystal_furnace.generation is 360.[7]
- furnaces.obsidian_furnace.generation is 500.[7]
- furnaces.netherite_furnace.generation is 1,000.[7]
- furnaces.rainbow_furnace.generation is 2,000.[7]
- furnaces.rainbow_furnace.rainbow_generation is 50,000. The config describes it as how much power the Rainbow Furnace will generate.[7]
Modded furnaces
The Allthemodium, Vibranium and Unobtainium furnaces live in their own config section. On top of speed and generation they have a mult option, the number of items smelted at once.[7]
- modded_furnaces.allthemodium_furnace.speed is 5 ticks.[7]
- modded_furnaces.allthemodium_furnace.mult is 16 items at once (a regular furnace smelts 1).[7]
- modded_furnaces.allthemodium_furnace.generation is 2,000 RF per tick.[7]
- modded_furnaces.vibranium_furnace.speed is 3 ticks.[7]
- modded_furnaces.vibranium_furnace.mult is 32 items at once.[7]
- modded_furnaces.vibranium_furnace.generation is 3,000 RF per tick.[7]
- modded_furnaces.unobtainium_furnace.speed is 1 tick.[7]
- modded_furnaces.unobtainium_furnace.mult is 64 items at once.[7]
- modded_furnaces.unobtainium_furnace.generation is 5,000 RF per tick.[7]
Other options
furnaces.recipeMaxXPLevel.level is 100. That is the number of experience levels a furnace can store in a recipe before the excess is voided, and the config notes that 100 levels is 30,971 XP.[7]
