What is Productive Bees?

2 parts

Productive Bees builds on top of vanilla bees. It adds a whole range of new bees that live in hidden nests in different biomes, plus the machines and hives you need to farm them. This pack includes version 1.21.1-13.9.0 of the mod.[1][2]

It's for you if you want a bee-powered resource setup. Hive bees produce resource combs in advanced hives, and a Centrifuge turns those combs into resources and honey. You'll also be breeding bees, so some vanilla bee knowledge helps.[2][3][4]

The kinds of bees

  • Solitary bees spawn from solitary nests in the overworld.[5]
  • Hive bees live in advanced hives and produce resource combs. Most are bred from other bees, but some come from giving a bee a specific item or from crafting spawn eggs.[3]
  • Wild bees live in nests too, but they will move into a hive. You'll find them mainly in the Nether and the End.[6]
  • Professional bees have special tasks. For example, the Farmer Bee harvests nearby crops and the Rancher Bee milks cows, sheep or llamas to make milky combs.[7][8][9]

Where it fits in the pack

The pack has a dedicated Productive Bees quest chapter. It starts with "Capturing Bees!" quest, where you capture bees using a Bee Cage, then moves on to "Searching for Nests" quest with the Nest Locator.[10]

After you have an Advanced Beehive, the chapter branches into the support machines. It covers the Catcher, the Feeding Slab, the Bottler and the BaBee Incubator. Its Honey Treat quest explains that you don't hunt for bees around the world. You place nests and right-click them with Honey Treat to lure bees in, and some nests need special items instead.[10]

Genetics is optional but powerful. You squish bees in the Bottler, separate the genes in a centrifuge, and feed them to bees on honey treats to change attributes like productivity. The Gene Indexer auto-combines genes for you.[10][11][12][13][14]

Tip: Some bees only come from other dimensions or from breeding. Check JEI for the breeding recipes and flower requirements so you know which bees to look for.[2][3]

How do you get started with Productive Bees?

5 parts

Productive Bees builds on vanilla bees, so a little vanilla bee knowledge helps. Your first goal is simple: get honey, get cages, and start collecting bees. Here is the order I'd go in.[2]

First, find a vanilla bee nest and make Bee Cages

Track down a vanilla bee nest first to get honey bottles and honeycombs. You need the honey bottles to craft Bee Cage, which makes it much easier to carry bees home.[2]

The quest "Capturing Bees!" quest asks for this cage. Right-click a bee with a cage to capture it, then right-click the filled cage on the ground to let it out again. Keep a few cages on you when you travel.[10][15]

Next, build an advanced beehive and an expansion box

Once you have enough honeycombs, build an advanced beehive and an expansion box. The advanced hive lets you look inside to see your bees and what they produce, and hive bees need one to make resource combs. An expansion box raises the hive's bee capacity from 3 to 5 and lets you install upgrades.[2][3][16]

Tip: Unlike the vanilla hive, an advanced hive doesn't need a campfire nearby to be harvested. You can also break it and move it with the bees still inside, no Silk Touch needed.[16]

Then, make Honey Treats and find nests

Instead of flying around looking for specific bees, this pack's quest book points you to nests and Honey Treat. You craft a nest and right-click it with a treat to lure a bee in. Some nests need a special item instead of a treat, and each nest suits certain biomes or dimensions, so check JEI.[10][17]

Nests can be crafted too. The Birch Nest is one example. You can also pick up a nest you find, with the bee inside, without Silk Touch. To clear a nest of its bee and eggs, craft it with itself.[17][18]

Craft a Nest Locator

The Nest Locator points you toward nearby nests of a type you choose. The pack changed its recipe from the mod's default, so use the recipe below. The quest is "Searching for Nests" quest.[10][18][19]

Set up a Centrifuge

Combs from your advanced hives go into the Centrifuge, which turns them into resources and honey. The quest book says a plain centrifuge is fine at first, but you should get a Powered Centrifuge soon after. It's faster and runs on power.[4][10][20]

Tip: Not sure which bees you need? Use JEI to look up breeding recipes. Some bees can only be found in other dimensions or obtained through breeding.[2]

After that, the Feeding Slab (Feeding Slab) is a good next step. You put bee flowers on it in front of your hives.[10][21]

How does Productive Bees work?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 1.0.2 guide

Productive Bees builds on vanilla bees, so most of the mod is about the bees themselves plus a handful of machines that look after them. Bees are real entities in the world, which shapes how you build hives, how you automate and how you keep the pack running smoothly. Here is how it all fits together.[2][22]

Advanced hives and expansion boxes

The advanced hive is the vanilla hive upgraded. It doesn't need a campfire nearby to be harvested, and you can break it and carry it away with the bees still inside, no silk touch needed. Its GUI shows which bees are inside and lets you take out whatever they've produced.[16]

Attaching an expansion box raises the bee capacity from 3 to 5 and unlocks upgrade slots. You can put the box on top of or next to the hive, and each hive takes only one.[16][23]

The pack has changed the expansion box recipes for the wood variants shown in the recipe dump: acacia, bamboo, birch, cherry and crimson. Here is the acacia one as an example. Don't assume the mod's default recipe applies.[24]

Impatient? You can whack a hive or nest with a stick to force the bees out. The bees lose all their production progress, and it only works if it's safe for them to leave.[16]

Bees in advanced hives produce resource combs, which you process in a centrifuge. You can also compress combs into comb blocks for easier storage, for example Milky Comb into Milky Comb Block.[20][24]

Hive upgrades

Upgrades go into hives with an expansion box, and some also work in machines. They all start from the upgrade base. To install one, sneak and right click on the block.[25][26]

  • BaBee upgrade: in a hive, it gives bees a small chance to breed and produce offspring without your help. Bees that can't breed normally don't work with it. In a catcher, only baby bees get caught.[25]
  • Productivity upgrade: bees produce more combs per trip, and you can install several. It also works in the Honey Generator, where it lowers honey consumption.[25][27]
  • Speed upgrade: bees spend less time inside the hive. In a centrifuge, incubator or honey generator it speeds up the machine instead.[25][27]
  • Filter upgrade: right click a bee to add it to the filter, and put the filter in a crafting grid to clear it. In a hive, only listed bees may enter. In a catcher, only listed bees are picked up.[25]
  • Range upgrade: Farmer and Collector/Hoarder bees get +1 range per upgrade, from a default of 4. In a catcher it expands the area by 1 block in all directions. You can stack several.[25]
  • Anti-teleport upgrade: bees that can teleport stop doing so while living in that hive.[25]
  • Sampler upgrade: slowly extracts a small sample from pollinating bees on each visit. It's meant to be harmless, and several in one hive improve the rate.[25]
  • Block upgrades: bees produce full comb blocks instead of honeycombs.[25]
  • Simulator upgrade: bees stay inside and their flower trips are simulated, which is better for server performance. Put the bee's flower block, or a feeding slab holding flower blocks, at the foot of the hive. It must sit right below the front without blocking it.[25]

The feeding slab is a handy partner for the simulator. It holds 3 item blocks, and since a simulated hive has only one flower block position, a slab lets up to 3 different bees work in the same hive. Lumber and Quarry bees produce from a random item in the slab. Honeylogging the slab also gives bees regeneration.[28]

Watch out: Dragon Egg Hives don't support upgrades. Draconic bees in one need no flowers while the hive operates in the End, but anywhere else they need another pollination source.[29]

Machines

The Centrifuge turns resource combs into resources and honey. It holds 10 buckets of liquid, which can be pumped out. It also pushes fluid automatically into any fluid storage block next to it. The Powered Centrifuge runs on FE at an increased processing speed. The centrifuge also separates genetic material from bottled bee material into genes. In this pack you can craft the centrifuge with either of the recipes below.[4][24]

A few more machines round things out. The Honey Generator burns honey for power. You can pipe honey in, or add bottles, blocks and buckets in its GUI. The Incubator speeds up baby bee growth when you put the BaBee in a cage with honey treats. It can also infuse an egg with a bee type gene to make a spawn egg. The Gene Indexer combines stored genes automatically and needs a redstone signal.[14][27][33]

Genetics and attributes

To collect genes, put a bee in front of a bottler with a piston and pull the lever. The bottler needs empty bottles inside. Then throw the bottled bee into a centrifuge to separate the useful material from the junk.[12]

To pass a gene on, combine it with a honey treat and feed it to a bee. The chance of success depends on the gene's purity. You raise purity by combining two of the same gene or by putting more of the same gene on one treat. Only the type gene is used when making a spawn egg in the incubator, and any extra genes on the treat are lost.[13][33]

The attributes you can shape this way are productivity, weather tolerance, behavior (diurnal, nocturnal or metaturnal), endurance and temper. Weather tolerance and behavior can also change by leashing a bee outside in conditions it isn't used to, but the bee can take damage while it adapts, so keep honey treats on hand.[11]

Keeping it fast

Bee AI and pathing are the big resource cost. Give every bee a home and its flower block, and keep enclosures from getting too big or the bees will wander off. A simulator upgrade avoids having the bee entities in the world at all.[22]

Comb rendering in centrifuges is another cost. If you run lots of them, turn it off in the client config file productivebees-client.toml.[22]

Unverified Exact FE per tick, centrifuge processing times, honey generator output and the upgrade percentage values for this pack could not be confirmed. No config files for this mod were available.

How do you progress through Productive Bees?

5 parts

Productive Bees in this pack is a gentle ramp. You start by catching a bee, then build an Advanced Beehive setup, lure in the early bees with nests, breed your way up to the gem and ore bees, and finally plug the bees into other mods. The quest chapter follows that order, and many of its quests unlock after the Advanced Beehive quest.[10]

Tier 1: Capture a bee and find nests

The first quest, "Capturing Bees!" quest, asks for a Bee Cage. Right-click a bee with it to capture it. The quest also says adventuring can net you Sturdy Bee Cages, so keep an eye out.[10]

Next is "Searching for Nests" quest with the Nest Locator. Right-clicking a nest of the type you are searching for points you toward another one.[10]

Tier 2: Hives, treats and tools

The Advanced Hive doesn't need a campfire nearby to be harvestable, and you can break it and move it with the bees still inside, no Silk Touch needed. An expansion box raises the bee capacity from 3 to 5 and lets you install upgrades.[16]

The quest chapter then hands you a batch of tool quests. Here is what each one is for:[10]

  • Honey Treat: this is how you lure bees into nests. Some nests ask for a special item instead, so check JEI.[10]
  • Feeding Slab: you can place Bee Flowers on a Feeding Slab placed in front of a hive.[10]
  • Centrifuge: it processes combs into useful items and honey. The quest recommends getting the Powered Centrifuge soon after. The Heated Centrifuge is the fastest and processes Comb Blocks instead of combs. Speed Upgrades make all of them faster.[10]
  • BaBee Incubator: it grows baby bees faster (a caged baby bee plus 20 Honey Treats makes an adult) and turns eggs into spawn eggs using a gene on a honey treat.[10]
  • Bottler and Gene Indexer: put a piston above the Bottler with a block of space between them and squish a bee to get genes. You can combine genes in a crafting table, or let the Gene Indexer auto-combine them.[10]
  • Catcher: it catches bees flying around it, and a Filter Upgrade lets you pick which bees. Bee Jar is a display jar for caged bees.[10]

Tier 3: Lure bees with nests

The quest chapter explains that you don't spend your time chasing bees. You craft nests and right-click them with Honey Treats to lure bees in, and the biome matters. The Overworld nests are the easy start:[10]

  • Wood nests (Oak Nest, Dark Oak Nest, Bamboo Nest and the rest) work in any Overworld biome and lure Carpenter Bees and the Blue Banded Bee. The Dark Oak Nest lures 3 different bees.[10]
  • Stone Nest: Mason Bee or Digger Bee, in any Overworld biome.[10]
  • Dirt Nest: Ashy Mining Bee, Chocolate Mining Bee or Leafcutter Bee, in any Overworld biome.[10]
  • Reed Nest: Mason Bee or Reed Bee, in any Overworld biome.[10]
  • Sand Nest: Chocolate or Ashy Mining Bee in a Desert biome. Gravel Nest: Ashy Mining, Chocolate Mining or Digger Bee in a River or Beach biome.[10]
  • Snow Nest: a Sweat Bee in a snowy biome. Slimy Nest: Slimy Bees in a swamp biome.[10]

The Nether and End nests don't take Honey Treats. They want a specific item, and the quests list them like this:[10]

Tier 4: Breeding up the ladder

Once you have the nest bees, breeding takes over. The Breeding Chamber breeds bees safely. You supply both parents, their breeding items, power and empty cages, and speed upgrades can speed it up. These are the main steps according to the quests and the in-game bee pages:[10][31]

  1. Iron Bee: Crystalline Bee plus Ashy Mining Bee. Gold Bee: Crystalline Bee plus Mason Bee.[10][34][35]
  2. Redstone Bee: Glowing Bee plus Chocolate Mining Bee.[10][36]
  3. Lapis Bee: Redstone Bee plus Blue Banded Bee.[10][37]
  4. Diamond Bee: Ender Bee plus Lapis Bee.[10][38]
  5. Emerald Bee: Diamond Bee plus Slimy Bee.[10][39]
  6. Experience Bee: Emerald Bee plus Lapis Bee.[10][40]
  7. Ancient Bee: feed a Diamond Bee a block of netherite.[10][41]

Several bees skip breeding entirely. A Skeletal Bee moves into empty Advanced Beehives left in the dark, and the ZomBee does the same. Feed a Skeletal Bee a Withered Rose to get the Withered Bee. Feed TNT to a vanilla bee for the CreeBee. The Sugarbag Bee has a chance to spawn when you break Cocoa Pods in a Jungle. Bumble Bees spawn naturally and can be ridden with a saddle and a Treat on a Stick.[10][42][43][44][45]

The top of the chain is the Allthemodium Bee (Ancient plus Withered), the Vibranium Bee (Ancient plus Draconic) and the Unobtainium Bee (Allthemodium plus Vibranium). The quest descriptions say to pour the molten metal over a bee egg: molten Allthemodium over an ancient bee egg, molten Vibranium over an Allthemodium bee egg, and molten Unobtanium for the Unobtainium Bee.[10]

Watch out: Several metal bee quests list identical parents. Iron, Copper and Tin all say Crystalline plus Ashy Mining, and Nickel and Zinc both say Iron plus Sweat. Treat those subtitles with caution and confirm the exact parents in JEI.[10]

Unverified The molten-metal steps for Allthemodium, Vibranium and Unobtainium don't line up cleanly with the parent bees listed on the same quests. Check the exact recipe in JEI before you build around them. This site does hold All the Mods 10: To the Sky's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.

Tier 5: Cross-mod automation

This is where the pack stands out. Many bee recipes from other mods were changed by the pack so that a bee goes in and the bee comes back out together with a spawn egg. That includes AE2 transform recipes, Ars Nouveau enchanting apparatus recipes, Draconic Evolution fusion crafting, EnderIO alloy smelting and Modern Industrialization centrifuge and electrolyzer recipes. The pack also added a conversion from a Resin Bee Spawn Egg to a configurable bee and its spawn egg.[18]

The quests point to the payoff. "Automated Flux Dust" quest says Flux Dust can be automated by converting Redstone Bee Spawn Eggs into Flux Dust Bee Spawn Eggs using an Obsidian Bee. "Automating Awakened Supremium" quest says Awakened Supremium and other tiered essences can be farmed with Productive Bees. a quest in "Integrated Dynamics" says Menril Bees can automate Crystallized Menril Chunks.[46][47][48]

Bee quests also show up in other chapters, including Steam Age ("We Know You Hate It" quest) and Feeling Electric, so you'll bump into bees as you progress through the pack.[49][50]

How does Productive Bees work with other mods?

5 parts

Productive Bees plugs into a lot of the pack's other mods. The links below come from in-pack recipes. Almost all of them were changed or added by the pack, so they can differ from the mod's defaults.[18]

Centrifuge outputs from other mods

Many centrifuge recipes for honeycombs have been changed to hand out items from other mods, always alongside Wax. Alloy combs give nuggets from the pack's ore mod, like Bronze Nugget, Steel Nugget and Electrum Nugget. Gem and dust combs give things like Peridot, Fluorite, Sulfur and Rose Quartz.[18]

The same pattern covers the endgame metals and several magic and tech mods. You can get Allthemodium Nugget, Vibranium Nugget and Unobtainium Nugget, plus Tiny Chaos Fragment, Flux Dust and Source Gem. Forbidden Arcanus items such as Arcane Crystal, Deorum Nugget and Rune are in there too, and there is a whole family of Ender IO alloy nuggets.[18]

AE2's fluix comb works a bit differently. Its centrifuge recipe gives Fluix Crystal, Fluix Dust and wax.[18]

Two centrifuge recipes run the other way and turn a fluid-style item into wax: Soul Lava and Builder's Tea.[18]

    Bee conversions

The pack has a long list of bee conversion recipes. Each one ties an item from another mod to a specific Productive Bees bee type. For example, Fluix Pearl leads to the fluix bee, Liquid Lithium Bucket to the lithium bee, and Prosperity Block to the prosperity bee.[18]

Other conversions come from Just Dire Things, Oritech, Industrial Foregoing, Forbidden Arcanus, Big Reactors, Modern Industrialization, Actually Additions, RFTools Base and Create Enchantment Industry. The Just Dire Things goo blocks, from Primogel Goo up to Shadowpulse Goo, map to four different bees. The ATM Star Block leads to the starry bee.[18]

One conversion is new in the pack rather than modified: Polonium Pellet leads to the wasted radioactive bee.[18]

    AE2 and Ars Nouveau recipes

Some bees are made with the other mods' own crafting machines. The pack changed four AE2 transform recipes that turn a configurable bee into a spawn egg, covering the entro, redstone crystal, sky bronze and sky osmium bees. They use water or lava as the fluid, and items like Entro Dust and Sky Stone are involved.[18]

Ars Nouveau handles two more through its enchanting apparatus: the air essence bee and the arcane bee. The air essence recipe uses a Wilden Wing and the Rancher Bee Spawn Egg, and the arcane recipe uses a Source Gem.[18]

    Dyed petrified honey

The pack adds shapeless recipes that turn Petrified Honey into coloured versions using dyes. This comes from Dyenamics and Friends, and the colours include Amber Petrified Honey, Lavender Petrified Honey and Wine Petrified Honey.[18]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Productive Bees?

    5 parts

Most of the mod's quests live in the Productive Bees chapter, and a handful of bee quests show up in other chapters as automation tips. This mod is not on the ATM Star quest path, so you can treat all of this as optional.[10][46][47][48][49][50]

    Getting started

The chapter opens with "Capturing Bees!" quest, which asks for a Bee Cage. Right-click a bee with it to capture it. "Searching for Nests" quest follows and asks for a Nest Locator, which points you toward another nest of the type you right-clicked.[10]

    Machines and gear

The next group unlocks after the Advanced Beehive quest. Each one asks for a single item.[10]

    Nest quests

"Wood Nests" quest asks for all nine wood-type nests: Oak Nest, Dark Oak Nest, Jungle Nest, Spruce Nest, Birch Nest, Acacia Nest, Cherry Nest, Mangrove Nest and Bamboo Nest. They work in any Overworld biome and lure Carpenter Bees and the Blue Banded Bee.[10]

The rest of the nests each get their own quest, all following the same earlier quest.[10]

    Bee quests

Bees that come straight from nests or special spawning follow the Honey Treat quest: "Draconic Bee" quest (Obsidian Nest in the End), "ZomBee" quest, "Sugarbag Bee" quest, "Crystalline Bee" quest, "Ghostly Bee" quest, "Ender Bee" quest and "Magmatic Bee" quest. Most ask for a Honeycomb, while the Sugarbag Bee asks for a Sugarbag Honeycomb and the Ghostly Bee for a Ghostly Comb.[10]

"Bumble Bee" quest is the fun one. It asks for a Treat on a Stick and a saddle, so you can ride a Bumble Bee.[10]

A big batch of metal, gem and mushroom bees hangs off a separate parent quest. Examples are "Gold Bee" quest, "Steel Bee" quest, "Bronze Bee" quest and "Red Shroombee" quest. Each subtitle gives the parent bees or the item to feed. "CreeBee" quest asks for a Powdery Comb and "Rancher Bee" quest for a Milky Comb.[10]

The longest chain runs in this order. "Glowing Bee" quest leads to "Redstone Bee" quest, then "Lapis Bee" quest. That feeds into "Diamond Bee" quest, which also needs the Ender Bee. After Diamond Bee come "Ancient Bee" quest and "Emerald Bee" quest, which also needs the Slimy Bee. Ancient Bee plus "Withered Bee" quest unlocks "Allthemodium Bee" quest, and Ancient Bee plus Draconic Bee unlocks "Vibranium Bee" quest. The chain ends at "Unobtainium Bee" quest, which needs both of those.[10]

Watch out: The subtitles for Copper Bee, Aluminium Bee, Iron Bee and Tin Bee all list Crystalline and Ashy Mining as the parents, and Nickel Bee and Zinc Bee both list Iron and Sweat. Double-check these breeding combos in-game before relying on them.[10]
