What is Productive Bees?
3 parts
Productive Bees builds on top of vanilla bees and adds a whole range of new bees, each producing its own resources. This pack ships Productive Bees 1.21.1-13.8.0. The in-game guide assumes you already know how vanilla bees work.[1][2]
Out in the overworld you'll find new solitary bees living in well hidden nests in different biomes. They don't live in a hive, but their genetics let you breed new types. Some bees only live in other dimensions or can only be obtained through breeding, so keep JEI open to look up which parents you need.[2]
Who it's for
If you like automating resources, this one is for you. You collect bees, breed them and put them to work in advanced hives, then process the combs they produce. Some bees even have special jobs, such as the Farmer Bee, which harvests nearby crops, and the Collector Bee, which picks up items from the ground.[3][4][5][6]
How the early game goes
- Find a vanilla bee nest and take some honey bottles and honeycombs. The honey bottles are needed to craft Bee Cage, which makes carrying bees home much easier.[2]
- Once you have enough honeycombs, build an advanced beehive and an expansion box. The advanced beehive lets you look inside and see what your bees are producing.[2]
- Set up processing. The Centrifuge turns resource combs into resources and honey. It is also used to separate genetic material from bottled bees into genes.[7]
Later you can dig into genetics. Attributes such as productivity, weather tolerance and temper can be moved from one bee to another with a Honey Treat.[8][9]
In the quest book
The pack has a dedicated Productive Bees quest chapter. It starts with the Bee Cage quest a quest in "?", followed by the Nest Locator quest a quest in "?". Further quests cover machines such as the Bottler, Catcher, BaBee Incubator and Gene Indexer, plus a long list of nests and honeycombs.[10]
How do you get started with Productive Bees?
6 parts
Productive Bees builds on vanilla bees, so it helps to know how those work first. On top of them you'll meet new bees living in well hidden nests in different biomes. This is the order I'd tackle things in this pack.[2]
Find a vanilla bee nest
Your very first job is to find a vanilla bee nest and take some honey bottles and honeycombs from it. The honey bottles are what you need to craft Bee Cages, and the honeycombs are what you'll spend on your first proper hive.[2]
Craft a Bee Cage
The Bee Cage is how you capture bees and carry them home. Right click a bee with the cage to catch it, then right click the filled cage on the ground to release it again. The pack has two recipes for it, shown below.[11][12]

In the pack's quest book, the cage has a task in the productive_bees chapter: a quest in "?". The Nest Locator task a quest in "?" comes right after it.[10]
Build an advanced beehive and expansion box
Once you have enough honeycombs, build an advanced beehive and an expansion box. The advanced hive lets you look inside to see your bees and what they produce. Unlike a vanilla hive, it doesn't need a campfire nearby to be harvested. You can also break it and move it with the bees still inside, without silk touch.[2][13]
An expansion box raises the hive's bee capacity from 3 to 5 and lets you install upgrades. You can place it on top of or next to the hive, and each hive takes only one.[13][14]
Get a Centrifuge
Bees in advanced hives produce resource combs, and the Centrifuge turns those combs into resources and honey. It holds 10 buckets of liquid. The Powered Centrifuge runs on FE and works faster. There are two in-pack recipes for the basic centrifuge.[7][12][15]

With a bottler you can make a Honey Treat. Treats calm angry bees and make baby bees grow up faster. Later on they also carry genes from one bee to another. You can use a treat on an empty nest to start its repopulation cooldown, which can attract a new bee.[12][17][18]
Find nests and catch bees
Solitary bees come from nests scattered around the overworld. Break a nest to pick it up with the bee inside, no silk touch needed. The Nest Locator helps you hunt for them. Shift right click it on a nest, or on a block of that nest's type, then right click again to find nearby nests of that type.[17][19][20]
When you want to catch bees without chasing them, load the Catcher with cages and it will catch any bee flying over it. A flower or a Feeding Slab on top will attract bees.[12][21]
Some bees only live in other dimensions or come from breeding. Use JEI to look up the breeding recipes so you know which bees to look for.[2]
Heads up: in this pack, the outputs of many bee recipes, such as the gem bees, show up as the generic Honeycomb. That is why the quest chapter has so many tasks asking for it.[10][12]
How does Productive Bees work?
5 parts
Productive Bees builds on vanilla bees, so most of the mod is about the bees themselves plus a handful of machines that look after them. Bees are real entities in the world, which shapes how you build hives, how you automate and how you keep the pack running smoothly. Here is how it all fits together.[2][22]
Advanced hives and expansion boxes
The advanced hive is the vanilla hive upgraded. It doesn't need a campfire nearby to be harvested, and you can break it and carry it away with the bees still inside, no silk touch needed. Its GUI shows which bees are inside and lets you take out whatever they've produced.[13]
Attaching an expansion box raises the bee capacity from 3 to 5 and unlocks upgrade slots. You can put the box on top of or next to the hive, and each hive takes only one.[13][14]
The pack has changed the expansion box recipes for the wood variants shown in the recipe dump: acacia, bamboo, birch, cherry and crimson. Here is the acacia one as an example. Don't assume the mod's default recipe applies.[12]

Impatient? You can whack a hive or nest with a stick to force the bees out. The bees lose all their production progress, and it only works if it's safe for them to leave.[13]
Bees in advanced hives produce resource combs, which you process in a centrifuge. You can also compress combs into comb blocks for easier storage, for example Milky Comb into Milky Comb Block.[12][15]
Hive upgrades
Upgrades go into hives with an expansion box, and some also work in machines. They all start from the upgrade base. To install one, sneak and right click on the block.[23][24]
- BaBee upgrade: in a hive, it gives bees a small chance to breed and produce offspring without your help. Bees that can't breed normally don't work with it. In a catcher, only baby bees get caught.[23]
- Productivity upgrade: bees produce more combs per trip, and you can install several. It also works in the Honey Generator, where it lowers honey consumption.[23][25]
- Speed upgrade: bees spend less time inside the hive. In a centrifuge, incubator or honey generator it speeds up the machine instead.[23][25]
- Filter upgrade: right click a bee to add it to the filter, and put the filter in a crafting grid to clear it. In a hive, only listed bees may enter. In a catcher, only listed bees are picked up.[23]
- Range upgrade: Farmer and Collector/Hoarder bees get +1 range per upgrade, from a default of 4. In a catcher it expands the area by 1 block in all directions. You can stack several.[23]
- Anti-teleport upgrade: bees that can teleport stop doing so while living in that hive.[23]
- Sampler upgrade: slowly extracts a small sample from pollinating bees on each visit. It's meant to be harmless, and several in one hive improve the rate.[23]
- Block upgrades: bees produce full comb blocks instead of honeycombs.[23]
- Simulator upgrade: bees stay inside and their flower trips are simulated, which is better for server performance. Put the bee's flower block, or a feeding slab holding flower blocks, at the foot of the hive. It must sit right below the front without blocking it.[23]
The feeding slab is a handy partner for the simulator. It holds 3 item blocks, and since a simulated hive has only one flower block position, a slab lets up to 3 different bees work in the same hive. Lumber and Quarry bees produce from a random item in the slab. Honeylogging the slab also gives bees regeneration.[26]
Machines
The Centrifuge turns resource combs into resources and honey. It holds 10 buckets of liquid, which can be pumped out. It also pushes fluid automatically into any fluid storage block next to it. The Powered Centrifuge runs on FE at an increased processing speed. The centrifuge also separates genetic material from bottled bee material into genes. In this pack you can craft the centrifuge with either of the recipes below.[7][12]

The Catcher catches any bee flying over it as long as you load it with Bee Cage items. A flower or feeding slab on top attracts bees. It takes the BaBee, filter and range upgrades.[21]
A few more machines round things out. The Honey Generator burns honey for power. You can pipe honey in, or add bottles, blocks and buckets in its GUI. The Incubator speeds up baby bee growth when you put the BaBee in a cage with honey treats. It can also infuse an egg with a bee type gene to make a spawn egg. The Gene Indexer combines stored genes automatically and needs a redstone signal.[25][29][30]
Genetics and attributes
To collect genes, put a bee in front of a bottler with a piston and pull the lever. The bottler needs empty bottles inside. Then throw the bottled bee into a centrifuge to separate the useful material from the junk.[31]
To pass a gene on, combine it with a honey treat and feed it to a bee. The chance of success depends on the gene's purity. You raise purity by combining two of the same gene or by putting more of the same gene on one treat. Only the type gene is used when making a spawn egg in the incubator, and any extra genes on the treat are lost.[9][29]
The attributes you can shape this way are productivity, weather tolerance, behavior (diurnal, nocturnal or metaturnal), endurance and temper. Weather tolerance and behavior can also change by leashing a bee outside in conditions it isn't used to, but the bee can take damage while it adapts, so keep honey treats on hand.[8]
Keeping it fast
Bee AI and pathing are the big resource cost. Give every bee a home and its flower block, and keep enclosures from getting too big or the bees will wander off. A simulator upgrade avoids having the bee entities in the world at all.[22]
Comb rendering in centrifuges is another cost. If you run lots of them, turn it off in the client config file productivebees-client.toml.[22]
Unverified Exact FE per tick, centrifuge processing times, honey generator output and the upgrade percentage values for this pack could not be confirmed. No config files for this mod were available.
How do you progress through Productive Bees?
5 parts
Productive Bees in this pack is a wide quest tree rather than a single line. A few early quests unlock the basics, and the rest are mostly nests and combs to collect. Here is the order I'd follow.[10]
Step 1: Cage and locate
The chapter starts with the Bee Cage in a quest in "?". Right after it comes the Nest Locator in a quest in "?", which helps you find nests so you know where your first bees live.[10]

Step 2: Core machines
A second batch of quests unlocks the basic machines. These are separate quests, so you can do them in any order. Here is what each one does.[10]
- a quest in "?" is the Catcher. Load it with cages and it catches any bee flying over it. Put a flower or a feeding slab on top to attract bees.[10][21]
- a quest in "?" is the Feeding Slab, a collection point for feeding bees. Lumber and Quarry bees produce from a random item in it.[10][26]
- a quest in "?" accepts the Centrifuge, the Powered Centrifuge or the Heated Centrifuge. The centrifuge turns resource combs into resources and honey, and the powered version runs on FE for more speed.[7][10]
- a quest in "?" is the Bottler, which bottles honey and other fluids. With a piston it can also bottle up bees.[10][16]
- a quest in "?" is the BaBee Incubator. It grows BaBees faster using honey treats, and it can infuse an egg with a bee type gene to make a spawn egg.[10][29]
- a quest in "?" is the Gene Indexer. It combines loose gene samples automatically and needs a redstone signal.[10][30]
- a quest in "?" is the Bee Jar, a display container for a bee cage.[10][32]
- a quest in "?" is the Honey Treat. Several comb quests unlock after it, so it is an important one to finish.[10]

The Bottler also has its own honey treat recipe.
Step 3: Nests and hives
Solitary bees spawn from nests in the overworld. Wild bees also live in nests, mostly in the nether and the end, but they will move into a hive too. Hive bees need an advanced hive to produce resource combs.[3][19][33]
The pack has one quest for every nest type, and you can do them in any order. One quest covers the wood nests: Oak, Dark Oak, Jungle, Spruce, Birch, Acacia, Cherry, Mangrove and the Bamboo Nest. The rest each have their own quest: Stone, Dirt, Sand, Gravel, Reed, Snow, Slimy, Soul Sand, Nether Gold, Nether Brick, Quartz, Glowstone, End Stone and Obsidian. Start with a quest in "?" for the wood nests and follow the single-nest quests such as a quest in "?" for Stone Nest.[10]
Some nests tell you which bee to expect. Ghostly Bees live in soul sand nests, Crystalline Bees in nether quartz nests, Magmatic Bees in nether brick nests, Ender Bees in end stone nests and Slimy Bees in slimy nests in swampy biomes.[34][35][36][37][38]
An advanced hive can be broken and moved with the bees inside, and it does not need a campfire nearby. Adding an expansion box raises its bee capacity from 3 to 5 and lets you install upgrades.[13]
Step 4: Combs
Once you have the honey treat, the comb quests open up. a quest in "?" wants Sugarbag Honeycomb and a quest in "?" wants Ghostly Comb. a quest in "?" asks for the Treat on a Stick together with a saddle. Another set of quests follows with milky and powdery combs: a quest in "?" and a quest in "?". After those comes a long run of quests that all ask for the generic Honeycomb.[10]
The pack changed the hive recipes for the gem bees, including amethyst, topaz, opal and the diamond variants. Each now produces a Honeycomb alongside pollen. The Ghostly Bee and both Sugarbag-comb bee recipes are also marked as changed by the pack. The Creeper Bee (Powdery Comb) and Rancher Bee (Milky Comb) recipes are unchanged mod recipes.[12]
A CreeBee comes from feeding TNT to a vanilla bee, and a Rancher Bee milks cows, sheep or llamas to make milky combs. If you prefer storing combs as blocks, each comb block can be crafted back into its comb.[12][39][40]
Step 5: Bees from other mods
Higher up, the pack ties bees into other mods' machines. Many recipes in the pack take a bee and give it back together with a spawn egg. They are triggered by Applied Energistics 2, Ars Nouveau, EnderIO, Draconic Evolution, Mystical Agriculture, Modern Industrialization, Immersive Engineering, Forbidden Arcanus and Flux Networks recipes. All are marked as changed by the pack. The recipe list I could see is truncated, so there may be more.[12]
Transform (ae2)
- Configurable Bee
- any sky steel storage block
- any lava

One example of a pack-changed bee recipe.
The quest book also has spawn egg quests for these bees in other chapters: a quest in "?" in the basic power chapter and a quest in "?" in the Mystical Agriculture chapter. More configurable honeycomb quests sit in the rust-free, integrated dynamics and steam age chapters, for example a quest in "?", a quest in "?" and a quest in "?".[41][42][43][44][45]
Unverified The in-game guide lists breeding parents for several bees, for example Diamond from an Ender Bee and a Lapis Bee, and Gold from a Crystalline Bee and a Mason Bee. The breeding data in this pack's files was not available to me, so check JEI in your world to confirm the exact parents and flower requirements. This site does hold All the Mods 10: To the Sky's own recipes, read from the pack itself: look the item up in the item browser.
How does Productive Bees work with other mods?
3 parts
Productive Bees doesn't live in a bubble in this pack. The pack has rewritten a lot of its recipes so that bees, combs and the centrifuge plug into other mods' materials. Here is where those links show up.[12]
Combs that give other mods' materials
The biggest connection is the centrifuge. The pack changed a long list of its comb recipes so they output items from other mods, and each one also gives you Wax. You can run them in the Centrifuge, which processes resource combs into resources and honey. The Powered Centrifuge does the same job faster using FE.[7][12]
- Alloy nuggets: Brass Nugget, Bronze Nugget, Constantan Nugget, Electrum Nugget, Enderium Nugget, Invar Nugget, Lumium Nugget, Signalum Nugget and Steel Nugget.[12]
- Endgame metals: Allthemodium Nugget, Vibranium Nugget and Unobtainium Nugget, plus a comb that gives Patrick Star.[12]
- Gems and dusts: Ruby, Sapphire, Peridot, Fluorite, Rose Quartz, Cinnabar Dust and Sulfur.[12]
- Applied Energistics: the fluix comb gives Fluix Crystal and Fluix Dust.[12]
- Magic mods: Source Gem, Arcane Crystal, Deorum Nugget, Rune, and a stellarite comb that gives both Stellarite Piece and Xpetrified Orb.[12]
- Tech and power: Flux Dust and Tiny Chaos Fragment.[12]
- Ender IO: there are combs for the conductive alloy, copper alloy, dark steel, end steel, energetic alloy, pulsating alloy, redstone alloy, soularium and vibrant alloy nuggets, plus Grains of Infinity.[12]
Two recipes work the other way round. They take Soul Lava or Builder's Tea in the centrifuge and give back Wax.[12]
Centrifuge (productivebees)
Recipe id: productivebees:centrifuge/ae2/honeycomb_fluix
One example of a pack-changed centrifuge recipe.
Making bees with other mods' items
Some bees are made by giving a specific item to another bee, and the pack ties many of those to other mods. These bee conversion recipes were all changed by the pack. They reach into Applied Energistics, Actually Additions, Forbidden Arcanus, Mekanism, Mystical Agriculture, Industrial Foregoing, Just Dire Things, Oritech, Modern Industrialization, Big Reactors, RFTools Base and Create Enchantment Industry, plus a starry bee tied to the ATM Star Block.[3][12]
Bee Conversion (productivebees)

Example conversion: this one turns a bee into the fluix bee.
Applied Energistics also adds in-world transform recipes for the configurable bee. They use water or lava and produce a bee spawn egg. The pack changed the entro, redstone crystal, sky bronze and sky osmium bee recipes this way.[12]
Transform (ae2)
Charged Certus Quartz Crystal
Sky Stone

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Productive Bees?
5 parts
Most of the Productive Bees quests live in their own chapter, "productive_bees". A few other chapters also ask you for a Productive Bees item. The quest data has no titles for these quests, so I describe each one by what it asks you to hold and by what it unlocks after.[10][41][42][43][44][45]
Starting out: catching bees
The first quest in the chapter asks for the Bee Cage (a quest in "?"). It unlocks after a quest that is not part of this chapter's list. The quest after it, a quest in "?", asks for the Nest Locator.[10]
Machines and tools
A second group of quests all unlocks after the same earlier quest, so you can take them in any order. Each one asks you to have a single item:[10]
- Honey Treat (a quest in "?")[10]
- Feeding Slab (a quest in "?")[10]
- Bee Jar (a quest in "?")[10]
- A centrifuge: Centrifuge, Powered Centrifuge or Heated Centrifuge all count (a quest in "?")[10]
- BaBee Incubator (a quest in "?")[10]
- Gene Indexer (a quest in "?")[10]
- Bottler (a quest in "?")[10]
- Honeycomb (a quest in "?")[10]
- Catcher (a quest in "?")[10]
The Honey Treat quest leads to a further set. These ask for Sugarbag Honeycomb (a quest in "?") and Ghostly Comb (a quest in "?"). a quest in "?" wants a Treat on a Stick together with a saddle. Several Honeycomb quests also unlock here, such as a quest in "?" and a quest in "?".[10]
Nest quests
One quest asks for a nest of every wood type: Oak Nest, Dark Oak Nest, Jungle Nest, Spruce Nest, Birch Nest, Acacia Nest, Cherry Nest, Mangrove Nest and the Bamboo Nest (a quest in "?"). Every other nest has its own quest, and they all unlock after the same earlier quest as the wood nests:[10]
- Stone Nest (a quest in "?"), Dirt Nest (a quest in "?"), Sand Nest (a quest in "?") and Gravel Nest (a quest in "?")[10]
- Reed Nest (a quest in "?"), Slimy Nest (a quest in "?"), Snow Nest (a quest in "?") and Obsidian Nest (a quest in "?")[10]
- Soul Sand Nest (a quest in "?"), Nether Gold Nest (a quest in "?"), Nether Brick Nest (a quest in "?"), Quartz Nest (a quest in "?") and Glowstone Nest (a quest in "?")[10]
- End Stone Nest (a quest in "?")[10]
The big comb collection
The largest part of the chapter is a long run of quests that ask for Honeycomb. Most of them unlock after one shared earlier quest. Some have their own item instead: Powdery Comb (a quest in "?") and Milky Comb (a quest in "?").[10]
A few comb quests chain together. a quest in "?" unlocks after both a quest in "?" and a quest in "?". a quest in "?" unlocks after both a quest in "?" and a quest in "?".[10]
Unverified The quest data only lists the generic Honeycomb item for these quests. Which bee's comb each quest wants is not shown in the sources I have.
Other chapters that ask for Productive Bees items
- "rust_free_and_oiled" has quests that ask for Honeycomb: a quest in "?", a quest in "?" and a quest in "?".[41]
- "basic_power" has a quest in "?", which asks for a configurable bee spawn egg (Spawn Egg Configurable Bee).[42]
- "elmystical_agriculturerr" also has a bee spawn egg quest, a quest in "?".[43]
- "integrated_dynamics" has a quest in "?", which asks for Honeycomb.[44]
- "steam_age" has a quest in "?", which also asks for Honeycomb.[45]
