What is Occultism?
2 parts
Occultism is a ritual magic mod built around summoning spirits, which the mod calls demons, from "The Other Place". Once they are working for you, they can automate tasks, mine in void dimensions and help you store vast amounts of items. The mod also covers enchanted tools and jewelry, plus familiars that support you. It is inspired by Jonathan Stroud's Bartimaeus books. The pack ships version 1.189.0 of Occultism.[1][2]
How you get started
Break grass until you drop Demon's Dream Seeds, then use them to make the Dictionary Of Spirits. Follow that in-game guide. It leads you to otherworld groves hidden in plain sight once you gain the "Third Eye", and then to your first summoned spirit.[1][3]
The pack's quest chapter for the mod follows the same opening. It begins with the seeds in a quest in "?". From there it branches into the Demon's Dream Fruit in a quest in "?" and the dictionary in a quest in "?".[3]
Where it fits in the pack
The quest chapter then walks you through the Divination Rod (a quest in "?") and the first binding and ritual tools, such as Purified Ink with the Book of Binding: Foliot (a quest in "?"). Later steps include the Dimensional Storage Actuator for storage (a quest in "?") and Iesnium Ore (a quest in "?").[3]
The mod also touches the pack's basic tools chapter. One quest there is completed with either the Infused Pickaxe or the Iesnium Pickaxe.[4]
How do you get started with Occultism?
5 parts
Occultism starts with a very simple loop: get seeds, make the in-game guide, then follow it. The pack's quest chapter for the mod opens the same way, so you can use it as a checklist.[1][3]
Seeds and the Dictionary of Spirits
Break grass until you get Demon's Dream Seeds, the same way you would hunt for vanilla wheat seeds. That is the first quest in the chapter: a quest in "?". Next, craft the Dictionary Of Spirits, which is the follow-up quest a quest in "?". The Dictionary is the mod's in-game guide, so keep it handy and follow it as you go.[1][3]

Spirit Attuned Gem and Divination Rod
The next quest, a quest in "?", wants Otherstone, an Unstable Otherworld Sapling and a Spirit Attuned Gem. In this pack the gem is made in the Enchanting Apparatus from Ars Nouveau, not at a normal crafting table.[3][5]

Once you have a Book of Binding: Foliot (Bound), a quest in "?" asks you to hand it in along with iron, silver, gold and copper ingots. The bound Foliot book is also a part of early ritual recipes such as the Apprentice Ritual Satchel, so it is worth getting early. There is also a crafting recipe that makes the bound book from a Book of Calling.[3][5]

How does Occultism work?
4 parts
Occultism is built around summoned spirits that do your work for you. According to the mod's own description, they can automate tasks, store vast amounts of items and mine in void dimensions. The in-game Dictionary of Spirits is the place to learn each system step by step. This section covers the machine and automation rules the available sources actually confirm.[1]
Spirit jobs through Books of Calling
In this pack, spirit automation runs through Books of Calling. The pack has a Book of Calling: Foliot Transporter, a Book of Calling: Foliot Janitor, a Book of Calling: Foliot Lumberjack and a Book of Calling: Djinni Machine Operator. The Foliot jobs start from a Book of Binding: Foliot (Bound). The Djinni machine operator starts from a Book of Binding: Djinni (Bound).[5]

Dimensional mineshaft item handling
The dimensional mineshaft is where spirits mine for you, and it has simple item rules. Spirits in lamps go in from the top. Every other side is for pulling items out, so hoppers work there.[6]
- Insert spirits in lamps from the top of the mineshaft.[6]
- Extract items from any of the other sides.[6]
- Empty it by hand, with hoppers, or with a transporter spirit.[6]
Storage links
The stable wormhole's tooltip shows whether it is linked to a storage actuator. If it says it is not linked, it is not connected to your storage setup yet.[6]
Wild Spirit services and familiar upgrades
Not every ritual binds a spirit to the result. Forging Reinforced Deepslate is a service provided by Wild Spirits. You sacrifice the items and the spirit forges the block for you. You collect these blocks with an infused or iesnium pickaxe.[6]
Familiars have a mechanic of their own. The blacksmith familiar upgrades your other familiars when you right-click it with iron ingots or iron blocks. Upgraded familiars gain extra effects, while the blacksmith itself cannot be upgraded.[6]
Unverified Ritual multiblock layouts, pentacle and bowl placement, redstone behavior, storage system capacities, spirit miner rates and any config values are not confirmed by the sources available for this section. The pack ships no config files for the mod, so check the in-game Dictionary of Spirits for those details.
How do you progress through Occultism?
6 parts
The pack gives Occultism its own quest chapter, and it works as a good roadmap. You start with a plant and a book, move on to chalk and sacrificial bowls, and then work up through rituals that use ever stronger bound spirits: Foliot, Djinni, Afrit and Marid. In the pack's recipes, the bigger items from this mod are made with the ritual recipe type, not on a normal crafting grid.[3][5]
Step 1: Getting started
- Begin with Demon's Dream Seeds (a quest in "?"). Two quests branch from it: one for Demon's Dream and one for the Dictionary Of Spirits, the mod's in-game guide.[3][7]
- A separate quest asks for Otherstone, an Unstable Otherworld Sapling and a Spirit Attuned Gem (a quest in "?"). It leads straight to the Divination Rod quest.[3]
- Then gather your ritual basics. The quests ask for Purified Ink and a Book of Binding: Foliot, white chalk and the Chalk Brush, the Butcher Knife, and a Sacrificial Bowl plus a Golden Ritual Bowl.[3]
- a quest in "?" comes after those basics and the Spirit Attuned Crystal quest. It asks for a bound Foliot book (Book of Binding: Foliot (Bound)) and iron, silver, gold and copper ingots.[3]

Step 2: Foliot rituals and storage
Rituals that use Book of Binding: Foliot (Bound) are your first tier. In the pack's recipes these include Nature Paste, Research Fragment Dust, the Apprentice Ritual Satchel, the Stable Wormhole, the Storage Actuator Base and the Tier 1 Dimensional Storage Stabilizer.[5]
The chapter then points you toward storage. a quest in "?" asks for the Storage Actuator Base, the Dimensional Storage Actuator and the Dimensional Crystal Matrix. After that you can hand in a stabilizer (a quest in "?" accepts any of Tier 1 through Tier 4) and the Stable Wormhole with a Storage Accessor (a quest in "?").[3]

Step 3: Djinni rituals and Iesnium
Djinni rituals cover the Gray Paste, the Infused Pickaxe, the Soul Gem, the Tier 2 Dimensional Storage Stabilizer, the Dimensional Crystal Matrix and the Dimensional Mineshaft. In the pack's recipes, each of these lists Book of Binding: Djinni (Bound) as an ingredient.[5]
In the quest chain, a quest in "?" (infused pickaxe) is followed by a quest in "?" (Iesnium Ore), then a quest in "?" (Iesnium Pickaxe), then a quest in "?" (the dimensional mineshaft). Either pickaxe also satisfies a quest in the pack's basic tools chapter.[3][4]

Step 4: Afrit rituals
Afrit rituals use Book of Binding: Afrit (Bound) and, for some of them, Afrit Essence. The pack's recipes put the Artisanal Ritual Satchel, the Iesnium Ritual Bowl and the Tier 3 Dimensional Storage Stabilizer here.[5]
a quest in "?" asks for 3 wither roses and 2 Crushed Blackstone. Three quests follow it: Witherite Dust with black chalk, the artisanal satchel and the Iesnium sacrificial bowl.[3]
Step 5: Marid rituals
Marid rituals use Book of Binding: Marid (Bound) and cover Dragonyst Dust, the Iesnium Anvil and the Tier 4 Dimensional Storage Stabilizer. The chapter's Marid stage starts with a quest in "?" (Marid Essence and blue chalk).[3][5]
Two quests then ask for big material hauls. a quest in "?" wants a diamond block, an emerald block, an Block of Iesnium and a ghast tear. a quest in "?" wants 3 dragon breath, 2 Amethyst Dust, some Crushed End Stone and 4 end crystals. The anvil quest (a quest in "?") comes after the second one.[3]

The chalk ladder
Almost every step above also hands you a new colored chalk. In the recipes shown, the colored impure chalks all start from Impure White Chalk plus a ritual material. Examples are Impure Green Chalk from Nature Paste, Impure Gray Chalk from Gray Paste and Impure Pink Chalk from Demonic Meat.[5]
a quest in "?" collects the impure chalk colors. Once it is done, the chapter leads on to Eldritch Chalice, Trinity Gem and Rainbow Chalk, and Void Chalk comes after the rainbow chalk.[3]
How does Occultism work with other mods?
4 parts
Occultism doesn't live in its own bubble in this pack. The recipes below connect it to sieving, sawing, Ars Nouveau-style imbuing and a very late-game crafting recipe. Every one of them is confirmed from the pack's recipe data.[5]
Getting Raw Iesnium from a sieve
You can get Raw Iesnium without going through the mod's own mining route. The pack adds Ex Deorum sieve recipes that output it, using either a Diamond Mesh or a Netherite Mesh. Both start from Ex Deorum's own Crushed Blackstone, which is a different item from Occultism's Crushed Blackstone.[5]

Otherplanks from a sawmill
The pack lets you turn otherworld logs into Otherplanks in machines from other mods. Mekanism's sawing recipe does it and also yields Sawdust. A Productive Trees sawmill recipe does the same job.[5]

Ars Nouveau and Ars Ocultas
The Spirit Attuned Gem has an Ars Nouveau Enchanting Apparatus recipe from the Ars Ocultas add-on, shown below. It pairs Ars Nouveau's Source Gem with Occultism's Demon's Dream Essence. This is a mod recipe, not a pack change.[5]
Enchanting Apparatus (ars_nouveau)
Recipe id: ars_ocultas:spirit_attuned_gem
The quest chapter expects you to have this gem early. It is one of the tasks in quest a quest in "?", alongside Otherstone and Unstable Otherworld Sapling.[3][5]
The pack changed the recipe for the Sacrificial Altar, the Sacrificial Altar. It is made in the Enchanting Apparatus and needs a Golden Ritual Bowl, so you have to unlock that Occultism item first.[5]
Enchanting Apparatus (ars_nouveau)

The pack also changed the Ars Ocultas imbuement recipes that convert between metals. One makes Gold Ingot and the other makes Silver Ingot. Each of them uses the Spirit Attuned Gem.[5]

Silver also shows up on the Occultism quest line. Quest a quest in "?" asks for a Book of Binding: Foliot (Bound) along with several metal ingots, including Silver Ingot.[3]

Occultism's Soul Gem is one piece of a very late-game crafting recipe the pack adds for the Dragon Soul.[5]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Occultism?
5 parts
Occultism has its own quest chapter in the pack. None of its quests have titles, so I'll point to each one by its ID and tell you what it asks you to hand in. Every quest here is an item-submission task, and a lot of them pair an essence or paste with the matching impure chalk. A few quests unlock from prerequisites that aren't in this chapter's listing, and I'll flag those.[3]
Getting started
- a quest in "?" is the entry point. It asks for Demon's Dream Seeds.[3]
- a quest in "?" wants the grown Demon's Dream. a quest in "?" wants the Dictionary Of Spirits. Both unlock after the seeds quest.[3]
- a quest in "?" asks for Otherstone, Unstable Otherworld Sapling and Spirit Attuned Gem. Its prerequisite isn't in this chapter. a quest in "?" follows it and asks for the Divination Rod.[3]
Ritual basics and the storage line
Four quests unlock from the same prerequisite, which is also outside this chapter. a quest in "?" wants Purified Ink and Book of Binding: Foliot. a quest in "?" wants Impure White Chalk, White Chalk and the Chalk Brush. a quest in "?" wants the Butcher Knife. a quest in "?" wants the Sacrificial Bowl and the Golden Ritual Bowl.[3]
- a quest in "?" comes after the butcher knife and includes Spirit Attuned Crystal.[3]
- a quest in "?" needs all four quests above done. It asks for Book of Binding: Foliot (Bound) plus iron, silver, gold and copper ingots.[3]
- a quest in "?" asks for Impure Yellow Chalk, Impure Purple Chalk and Impure Light Gray Chalk.[3]
- a quest in "?" asks for Storage Actuator Base, Dimensional Storage Actuator and Dimensional Crystal Matrix.[3]
- Two quests branch from it. a quest in "?" accepts any tier of Tier 1 Dimensional Storage Stabilizer through Tier 4 Dimensional Storage Stabilizer. a quest in "?" wants Stable Wormhole and Storage Accessor.[3]
Goggles, pickaxes and iesnium
- a quest in "?" asks for the Otherworld Goggles.[3]
- a quest in "?" asks for the Infused Pickaxe. It needs the goggles quest plus one prerequisite from outside this chapter.[3]
- a quest in "?" wants Iesnium Ore. a quest in "?" wants the Iesnium Pickaxe. a quest in "?" wants the Dimensional Mineshaft.[3]
- Over in the basic tools chapter, a quest in "?" accepts either the infused pickaxe or the iesnium pickaxe.[4]
Spirit essences and chalks
The rest of the chapter has several small branches, each starting from a prerequisite outside this chapter. Most ask for one ritual product and its chalk.[3]
- Early branch: a quest in "?" wants Nature Paste and Impure Green Chalk. a quest in "?" wants Research Fragment Dust and Impure Lime Chalk.[3]
- a quest in "?" wants the Apprentice Ritual Satchel. a quest in "?" wants the Soul Gem. a quest in "?" wants Gray Paste and Impure Gray Chalk.[3]
- a quest in "?" wants Cursed Honey and Impure Orange Chalk. a quest in "?" then asks for cherry leaves, pink petals, Tallow and quartz. a quest in "?" finishes that line with Demonic Meat and Impure Pink Chalk.[3]
- a quest in "?" wants Afrit Essence and Impure Red Chalk. a quest in "?" follows, asking for 3 wither roses and 2 Crushed Blackstone, plus one more item the listing doesn't name.[3]
- Three quests open after that. a quest in "?" wants Witherite Dust and Impure Black Chalk. a quest in "?" wants the Artisanal Ritual Satchel. a quest in "?" wants the Iesnium Ritual Bowl.[3]
- a quest in "?" wants Marid Essence and Impure Blue Chalk. It leads to a quest in "?", which asks for a diamond block, an emerald block, Block of Iesnium and a ghast tear.[3]
- a quest in "?" is the other follow-up to the marid quest. It asks for 3 dragon breath, 2 Amethyst Dust, Crushed End Stone and 4 end crystals. a quest in "?" then asks for the Iesnium Anvil.[3]
- The next three need the diamond and emerald block quest, and the dragonyst one also needs the end crystal quest. a quest in "?" wants Echo Dust and Impure Cyan Chalk. a quest in "?" wants Crushed Ice, Crushed Packed Ice, Crushed Blue Ice and Impure Light Blue Chalk. a quest in "?" wants Dragonyst Dust and Impure Magenta Chalk.[3]
- a quest in "?" wants Cruelty Essence and Impure Brown Chalk.[3]
The finale
a quest in "?" is the big chalk check, asking for one of every impure chalk color. It needs the magenta, brown and cyan quests done first. After it you can take a quest in "?" for the Eldritch Chalice, which also needs the iesnium bowl quest. You can also take a quest in "?" for the Trinity Gem, which also needs the soul gem quest. a quest in "?" asks for Rainbow Chalk, and a quest in "?" closes the chapter with Void Chalk.[3]
What changed in Occultism between versions?
1 part
All the Mods 10: To the Sky 1.0.2 ships Occultism 1.189.0. The pack's mod list says the mod was already included in version 1.0 or earlier of the pack, so it has been part of the pack since the start of the releases I can see.[2]
Occultism 1.189.0
This is the version you get in this pack, and the mod's own changelog lists three notable changes.[2][8]
- New item and block textures by Aldahel, so some of Occultism's items and blocks look different from older versions.[8]
- The mod's build setup switched from NeoGradle to MDG. This is a developer-side change, so you won't notice it in play.[8]
- Fixed the search animation on the 3D divination rod model, which wasn't working before.[8]
Unverified No pack changelog entries for Occultism were available, so any changes made to the mod between pack releases are unverified.
