What is Mekanism?

2 parts

Mekanism is a tech mod that adds machinery, energy generation, transport networks and gadgets, all built around getting far more out of every ore you mine.[1]

Its ore processing chain (purification, dissolution, chemical injection and crystallization) can double, triple, quadruple or even quintuple your ingot output per ore, as long as you build enough infrastructure and supply enough energy. Every Mekanism machine can also be upgraded into a factory that processes 3 (basic), 5 (advanced), 7 (elite) or 9 (ultimate) items at once.[1]

The mods in this guide

  • Mekanism: the core machines, transmitters, and gadgets like the Jetpack, the Robit and the Digital Miner.[1]
  • Mekanism Generators: your power supply. Without this module you would need another mod to produce energy for Mekanism machines. It adds the Heat Generator, Gas-Burning Generator, Bio-Generator, Solar and Advanced Solar Generators, Wind Generator, Fission Reactor, Fusion Reactor and Turbine.[2]
  • Mekanism Tools: armor, shields and tools, including Paxels (an axe, pickaxe and shovel in one) for bronze, lapis lazuli, osmium, refined glowstone, refined obsidian and steel. It also adds Paxels for wood, stone, iron, gold and diamond.[3]

Mekanism, Mekanism Generators and Mekanism Tools are all version 10.7.14 in this pack.[4]

Where it fits in the quest book

The quest book has a "mekanism_reactors" chapter that points you at the mod's major milestones. Here are some of the entries it lists.[5]

How do you get started with Mekanism?

6 parts

Welcome to Mekanism! Your first jobs are getting power running, then making control circuits, because the pack's machine recipes lean on both. Here's the order I'd go in.[2][6]

Get power running

Mekanism Generators is the official addon that adds ways to produce energy for your machines. Without it, you would need some other mod to power them. It adds the Heat Generator, the Bio-Generator, the Solar Generator and the Wind Generator, among others.[2]

The mod's advancements describe the Heat Generator as the one to craft to start making power. The Solar Generator is described as renewable daytime energy, and for the Wind Generator the advancement says to hope there is some wind nearby.[7]

Make your first control circuit

The Basic Control Circuit is the first circuit tier. In this pack it is made by metallurgic infusing, not at a crafting table, so the recipe below is made in a Metallurgic Infuser.[6]

  • 20× any redstone

Circuits then climb through advanced, elite and ultimate. Each tier is built from the previous circuit plus a better alloy or infusing material. The Advanced Control Circuit has a crafting recipe, shown below, as well as an infusing one.[6]

Grab the Configurator

The Configurator is the tool the mod's advancement points to for changing the settings of blocks. It's a good thing to have in your inventory before you start placing machines.[8]

Start processing ore

Smelting an ore straight into an ingot wastes most of what you mined. Mekanism's purification, dissolution, chemical injection and crystallization machinery can double, triple, quadruple or even quintuple your ingots per ore, given enough infrastructure and energy. The Crusher is a machine you can build once you have circuits.[1][6]

Chemicals and storage

The Basic Chemical Tank is a building block for the chemical machines. In this pack the Chemical Infuser, Chemical Oxidizer, Chemical Dissolution Chamber and Chemical Washer are all crafted from it, so it's worth making early.[6]

Where this leads

The quest book's mekanism_reactors chapter picks up these machines later. One of its quests has the Chemical Oxidizer, Electrolytic Separator and Chemical Infuser among its tasks: a quest in "?".[5]

Mekanism Tools adds armor, shields and tools in bronze, lapis lazuli, osmium, refined glowstone, refined obsidian and steel. It also adds Paxels, a combined pickaxe, axe and shovel. Build your power and processing setup first, then upgrade your gear.[3]

How does Mekanism work?

8 parts

Mekanism is built around three ideas: processing ore far more efficiently than a furnace, moving power, fluids, chemicals and heat through dedicated transmitters, and scaling every machine up through tiers. Here is how those systems work in this pack, as far as the sources confirm.[1][8]

Ore processing and factories

Smelting an ore straight into an ingot wastes most of what you mined. Mekanism's purification, dissolution, chemical injection and crystallization machinery can double, triple, quadruple or even quintuple your ingot output per ore, as long as you build enough infrastructure and supply enough energy.[1]

The Chemical Crystallizer is the end of that chain. The matching advancement asks you to craft a Chemical Crystallizer, a Dissolution Chamber and a Washer together.[8]

Every Mekanism machine can be upgraded into a factory that processes several items at once: 3 for basic, 5 for advanced, 7 for elite and 9 for ultimate. A Tier Installer also counts for the factory advancement.[1][8]

Moving power, fluids, chemicals and heat

Each resource type has its own transmitter, so nothing shares a line by accident:[8]

  • Energy travels through the Universal Cable.[8]
  • Fluids travel through the Mechanical Pipe.[8]
  • Chemicals travel through the Pressurized Tube.[8]
  • Heat travels through the Thermodynamic Conductor.[8]

You can upgrade transmitters in the world by using the next tier of alloy on them, so you don't have to rip out a working network. For storage, the Fluid Tank holds fluids and the Basic Chemical Tank holds almost all chemicals. An Energy Cube stores spare power, and QIO Drives store your items and can have their storage bandwidth increased.[6][8]

Power generation

Mekanism Generators supplies the power. It adds the Heat Generator, Gas-Burning Generator, Bio-Generator, Solar Generator, Advanced Solar Generator, Wind Generator, Fission Reactor, Fusion Reactor and Turbine. Without it you would need another mod to power Mekanism machines. The Gas-Burning Generator burns Ethene, and the solar and wind generators are the simple daytime and wind-dependent options.[2][7]

The Fission Reactor is a multiblock, and its config tooltips show what scales it. Each fuel assembly adds to the burn rate and to the fuel and waste capacity. Each casing block adds heat capacity, so raising that value means more energy is needed to heat the reactor. Every block also adds to the coolant volume.[7]

Watch out: Fission reactors can melt down. Once damage passes 100%, the meltdown chance rises linearly as damage keeps climbing. If meltdowns are disabled in the config, the reactor instead shuts itself off and can't be restarted until damage drops back to safe levels.[7]

The MekaSuit Pants can also charge from heat with geothermal units installed. Charging scales with how hot the surroundings are compared to ambient and with how much of the pants is submerged. The same units reduce heat damage, scaling linearly with the number of units installed.[7]

Radiation and readouts

The Dosimeter and the Geiger Counter let you see how irradiated your surroundings are. In this pack enableDecayTimers is on, so the time radiation takes to decay is shown when readings are above safe levels.[8][9]

The pack sets energyType to Forge Energy and temperatureUnit to Kelvin. These only change how values are displayed in Mekanism GUIs and network reader readings, and you can switch them to Joules or another temperature unit if you prefer.[9]

Antimatter and the Antiprotonic Nucleosynthesizer

The pack changes how you get the Antimatter Pellet. Decompressing an Antimatter Block gives you the pellet back. The Antiprotonic Nucleosynthesizer is a late-game machine that needs an antimatter pellet to craft.[6]

How do you progress through Mekanism?

5 parts

Mekanism in this pack is guided by two quest chapters. The first covers the early and mid game: infusing, circuits, machines, cables and generators. The second is a long late-game chain that runs from reactors to the MekaSuit. Follow the quests in order and you'll climb the whole tech tree without guessing what comes next.[5][10]

Early game: infusing, circuits and the steel casing

Everything starts at the Metallurgic Infuser (a quest in "?"). It unlocks Infused Alloy (a quest in "?"), the Basic Control Circuit (a quest in "?") and the Teleporter Frame and Teleporter quest. Refined obsidian dust (Refined Obsidian Dust) needs both the infuser and the Crusher.[10]

The Energy Tablet quest (a quest in "?") opens up power. After it you get energy cubes, universal cables, the Chargepad, and the generators: Heat Generator, Solar Generator, Wind Generator and Bio-Generator.[10]

The Steel Casing quest (a quest in "?") is the gateway to most machines. Behind it you'll find the Enrichment Chamber, Energized Smelter, Chemical Oxidizer, Electrolytic Separator, Chemical Infuser, Pressurized Reaction Chamber, Precision Sawmill and Rotary Condensentrator. The machine upgrades (speed, energy, chemical, filter, muffling and stone generator) unlock after the steel casing and Structural Glass quests.[10]

The four tiers

Mekanism's tiered items go Basic, Advanced, Elite, Ultimate. The quests for tier installers, energy cubes, cables, pipes, pressurized tubes, logistical transporters, thermodynamic conductors, chemical tanks and induction cells accept any tier, so you can finish them with whichever you've built.[5][10]

The control circuit is the backbone of the tier ladder. The pack's quests pair Infused Alloy with the advanced circuit and Reinforced Alloy with the elite circuit. The recipes below show each step.[6][10]

The circuits also have metallurgic infusing versions. Bins, chemical tanks and energy cubes follow the same pattern: each higher tier is built from the previous tier plus the alloy and circuit of its own tier. Infused goes with Advanced, reinforced with Elite and atomic with Ultimate. Here is the Advanced Bin as an example.[6]

Mid game: the Meka-Tool and modules

The Atomic Disassembler quest (a quest in "?") leads straight to the Meka-Tool (a quest in "?"). The Modification Station (a quest in "?") is the hub for the module quests, which include shearing, jetpack, teleportation, vein mining, silk touch and solar recharging units.[5]

The Digital Miner quest comes after the Robit quest in the same chapter, and the QIO Drive Array quest (a quest in "?") opens the QIO storage line with drives, the dashboard, and the importer and exporter.[5]

Late game: reactors to the MekaSuit

The reactors chapter builds multiblocks one after another. The induction matrix quest (a quest in "?") asks for 32 Induction Casing and 2 Induction Port. The boiler quest (a quest in "?") and the turbine quest (a quest in "?") follow, and the turbine asks for 12 Turbine Vent.[5]

The fission reactor quest (a quest in "?") needs a Fission Reactor Casing, 4 Fission Reactor Port, a logic adapter, a Fission Fuel Assembly and a Control Rod Assembly. Afterwards come the Radioactive Waste Barrel (a quest in "?") and the hazmat gear. The Isotopic Centrifuge leads to the Plutonium Pellet, and the Solar Neutron Activator leads to the Polonium Pellet.[5]

Fusion needs the Hohlraum and the Laser Focus Matrix, which comes after the Laser and Laser Amplifier quests. All of these feed the fusion reactor quest (a quest in "?").[5]

The SPS quest (a quest in "?") asks for the SPS Casing, 4 SPS Port and 2 Supercharged Coil, plus a lot of structural glass. It leads to the Antimatter Pellet (a quest in "?"). That pellet unlocks the Antiprotonic Nucleosynthesizer and all four MekaSuit pieces: helmet, bodyarmor, pants and boots.[5]

Tip: The pack changed the recipe that gives you an Antimatter Pellet, so you can also get one by decompressing an antimatter block from the compressed-blocks mod. Check it here before you build the SPS.[6]

How does Mekanism work with other mods?

4 parts

Mekanism is the pack's main ore-processing hub. The pack has rewritten the Mekanism processing recipes for the ores from AllTheOres and Allthemodium, and added Mekanism sawing recipes for logs from several other mods. The recipe dump I was given for this section is cut off partway through the nickel recipes, so treat the lists below as examples rather than a complete catalogue.[6]

Ore processing with AllTheOres and Allthemodium

The pack changes three Mekanism processing steps so they accept these metals. Each step works from the ore, the raw material or the raw block, and some also accept intermediate items.[6]

In practice, you can run the modded metals through the same chemical chain you already use for vanilla ores. The recipes accept any item in the matching ore, raw material, raw block, shard or crystal tag. That means ores from other mods in the pack should work too, as long as they carry those tags.[6]

Sawing logs from other mods

The pack adds Mekanism sawing recipes that turn logs into planks and also give you Sawdust. They cover Allthemodium woods (ancient, demonic and soul), plus planks from Ars Nouveau, Forbidden Arcanus, Integrated Dynamics, Occultism and Silent Gear.[6]

Antimatter and All the Compressed

The pack also links Mekanism's Antimatter Pellet with All the Compressed's Antimatter Block. One recipe packs the pellet into the block and another unpacks the block back into the pellet. Both are marked as changed by the pack.[6]

Quests that mix in other mods

The "mekanism_reactors" quest chapter mostly asks for Mekanism and Mekanism Generators items, such as fission reactor parts, induction cells and providers, QIO components and MekaSuit modules. A few quests also ask for AllTheOres items. a quest in "?" asks for Sulfur alongside the Chemical Oxidizer, Electrolytic Separator and Chemical Infuser. a quest in "?" asks for Fluorite together with the Rotary Condensentrator, Chemical Infuser and Chemical Dissolution Chamber. It comes after the first of those two quests.[5]

Unverified The chapter list I was given is truncated, so there may be more quests that combine Mekanism with other mods. Any integrations beyond the recipes and quests above are unconfirmed.

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Mekanism?

3 parts

Mekanism, Mekanism Generators and Mekanism Tools are spread over two chapters I can read in full: "mekanism" for the basics and "mekanism_reactors" for the late game. The quests are all untitled, so I point to them by quest reference. Every task I can see is an item you have to obtain.[5][10]

Chapter: mekanism

Four quests here list no prerequisite: a quest in "?" (Structural Glass), a quest in "?" (the pigment extractor, pigment mixer and painting machine), a quest in "?" (a thermal evaporation plant with 33 blocks) and a quest in "?" (the Quantum Entangloporter). The main line starts at a quest in "?", the Metallurgic Infuser. Its prerequisite is a quest I can't see in the sources.[10]

From the infuser, the quests ask for a Basic Control Circuit (a quest in "?") and Infused Alloy (a quest in "?"). Infused alloy unlocks the Energy Tablet quest a quest in "?", and the tablet opens the power and gadget branches.[10]

Chapter: mekanism_reactors

This chapter starts wide. Many quests have no prerequisite, including the Robit, Atomic Disassembler, Laser, the Modification Station, the QIO Drive Array and a few fission, induction and boiler starters. Short side chains follow from several of them.[5]

Fission, turbine and beyond

The fission path begins with a quest in "?" and a quest in "?", and a quest in "?" follows the logic adapter. In parallel, a quest in "?" splits into a quest in "?" and a quest in "?", which both feed a quest in "?" (the Isotopic Centrifuge). That leads to a quest in "?", the fuel and control rod assemblies, and then to the reactor itself, a quest in "?", which asks for 4 reactor ports.[5]

The reactor quest unlocks the Radioactive Waste Barrel (a quest in "?") and a Basic Chemical Tank (a quest in "?"). The hazmat suit comes after the barrel. The tank quest opens the turbine parts, and they all lead to the full turbine in a quest in "?".[5]

After the barrel, the Solar Neutron Activator and centrifuge quests lead to the plutonium and polonium pellets. Those lead to the Supercharged Coil, the SPS port and a quest in "?", the SPS build. Then comes the Antimatter Pellet (a quest in "?"), which unlocks the Antiprotonic Nucleosynthesizer and each of the MekaSuit pieces.[5]

The fusion reactor quest, a quest in "?", needs three earlier quests. One is the laser line (a quest in "?" to a quest in "?" to a quest in "?"), one is the Hohlraum quest a quest in "?", and one is the fusion port quest a quest in "?".[5]

Unverified Only part of the "mekanism" chapter and none of the "basic_tools" chapter was readable, so remaining quests, any Mekanism Tools quests and the prerequisites for the first Metallurgic Infuser quest are not confirmed here.

Which Mekanism config options matter?

Good news: Mekanism's main config in this pack is short and easy to read. Everything lives in the common config file, and these are the options you're most likely to notice while playing.[9]

  • energyType is set to FORGE_ENERGY, so Mekanism GUIs show Forge Energy (client) and network reader readings use it too (server). The other allowed value is JOULES.[9]
  • temperatureUnit is set to KELVIN. It controls the temperature unit in Mekanism GUIs (client) and network reader readings (server). The allowed values are KELVIN, CELSIUS, RANKINE, FAHRENHEIT and AMBIENT.[9]
  • enableDecayTimers is true. When radiation readings are above safe levels, you see how long they will take to decay. Setting it to false on the client turns off the MekaSuit Geiger and Dosimeter Unit timers. Setting it to false on the server turns off the handheld Geiger Counter and Dosimeter timers.[9]
  • copyBlockData is true, so middle-clicking a machine copies its configuration data. If it were false, no data would be copied and you'd get the default instance of the stack.[9]
  • holidays is false, so holiday greetings and easter eggs don't play on the client. It also stops Robits with the default skin from having their skin randomized on the server.[9]
Tip: If you'd rather see Joules or a different temperature unit in your machines, change energyType or temperatureUnit. Both only change what is displayed in Mekanism GUIs and network reader readings.[9]

Unverified The sources don't list Mekanism's default values for these options, so I can't tell you which of them the pack changed from the mod default. The values above are simply what the pack sets. The config files for Mekanism Generators and Mekanism Tools aren't among the sources either, so I can't say how the pack configures them.

What changed in Mekanism between versions?

1 part

All the Mods 10: To the Sky 1.0.2 ships Mekanism, Mekanism Generators and Mekanism Tools at version 10.7.14. Each of them was first included in pack version 1.0 or earlier. I don't have any pack changelog entries for this mod, so the notes below come from the mod's own 10.7.14 changelog.[4][11][12][13]

Mekanism 10.7.14 highlights

The Mekanism family is released together and the changelog is shared across Mekanism, Mekanism Generators and Mekanism Tools, so these changes are listed once for the whole family. These are the ones that matter most while you play.[11][12][13]

  • The turbine base is now allowed to be non-square, so you have more freedom when building a turbine.[12][13]
  • Machines can now do bonus operations when the upgrade multiplier results in less than 1 tick operation before rounding.[12]
  • A missed bonus calculation for factory tiles was fixed.[12]
  • Freerunners are supported in curios slots, when the user or pack adds them to the tag.[12]
  • A bad empty check was removed from the fluid extract utils.[12]
  • The mod now tries to clear capability caches when pseudo-unloaded.[12]

The rest of the changelog is housekeeping: a neo version bump, removal of redundant registry code, some extra debug in the security utils, a service loading fix for funky contexts, and the bump to 10.7.14 itself.[12]

Watch out: The Mekanism changelog warns that the mod is currently in alpha and is not recommended for widespread use in modpacks. There are likely to be game breaking bugs, and updating from one alpha to the next may cause various Mekanism blocks to disappear or void their contents. Make backups before you update.[12]
