What is Deeper and Darker?
3 parts
Same as in the All the Mons 1.3.0 guide
Deeper and Darker builds on the vanilla Deep Dark. It adds a new dimension called the Otherside, with new biomes, a structure that is home to the warden, and over a hundred new blocks. This pack includes version 1.4.1 of the mod for NeoForge 1.21.1.[1][2]
Biomes to explore in the Otherside include the deeplands, the echoing forest, the overcast columns and the blooming caverns. The mod also adds 8 new mobs, including a miniboss, plus a warden set of armor and tools, an upgrade to the elytra and the sculk transmitter.[1]
Who it's for
This mod is for players who want an endgame-style adventure built around the warden. The pack's quest chapter starts you off by killing the Warden. Later quests point you to the Ancient City, where the Warden Upgrade Template is found in chests. With it you can upgrade from Netherite to Warden gear.[3]
Getting into the Otherside
Killing the Warden is the way in. It can drop a Heart of the Deep, and you use that on a frame of Reinforced Deepslate to open your portal to the Otherside. Nothing can be inside the portal, and that includes Sculk, or it won't activate.[1][3][4]
The Warden also drops Warden Carapace and Echo Shards, which you need for crafting other items. The quest chapter points out that Reinforced Echo Shard is a crafted item that uses Warden Carapaces.[3]
The ATM Star path
The Heart of the Deep also matters beyond this mod. The quest "Heart of the Deep" quest in the ATM Star chapter says the heart can be used for the ATM Star. It comes after the Deeper and Darker quests, so beating the Warden is a required step on that path.[4]
How do you get started with Deeper and Darker?
3 parts
Deeper and Darker adds a new dimension called the Otherside, and in this pack the way in is one boss fight. You kill the Warden, collect what it drops, and turn that into a set of gear. Here is the order I'd go in.[1][5]
Step by step
- Kill the Warden and look for a Heart of the Deep. It's the key to the Otherside: you use it on a frame of Reinforced Deepslate to open the portal. Nothing can be blocking the portal frame, and that includes sculk. The quest "Heart of the Deep" quest covers this.[5][6]
- Pick up every other Warden drop too. The Warden also drops Warden Carapace and Echo Shards, and both are used for crafting. It usually drops more than one carapace.[5]
- Craft a Reinforced Echo Shard. You need it for all the Warden gear, and the recipe is shown below. The quest "Reinforced Echo Shard" quest explains where the parts come from.[5][7]
- Get a Smithing Template. You find these in chests in Ancient Cities, and you can duplicate one afterwards. The pack changed the duplication recipe, so use the one shown below. See "Warden Upgrade Template" quest.[5][7]
- Upgrade your Netherite gear. Each Warden piece is a smithing upgrade of the matching Netherite piece, using the template and a Reinforced Echo Shard.[5][7]

The pack changed this duplication recipe, so don't rely on the mod's default.
Which Warden gear first?
If you have to pick, the armor is the safest first upgrade. "Warden Armor" quest says each piece has 1 more armor point and 1 more armor protection than its Netherite counterpart, though there is no more Knockback Resistance.[5]
The other armor pieces have their own smithing recipes that upgrade the matching Netherite piece.
For tools, the Warden Pickaxe keeps the same tier and speed as Netherite. The real change is higher attack damage across the Warden tools. The Warden Sword is listed in the Basic Tools chapter at 9 attack damage, and the Warden Pickaxe is shown at Tier 5.[5][8]
Good to know
- The Heart of the Deep has a second use: it can also be used for the ATM Star, so keep that in mind when the drop comes.[6]
- You can smelt Cobbled Sculk Stone to get Sculk Stone for building, but it can't be used to make stone tools.[5]
- Once you're set up, the Sonorous Staff and Soul Elytra are the next big goals. Both need Sculk Bones and Soul Crystals.[5][7]
How does Deeper and Darker work?
4 parts
Here is the honest picture: in this pack, Deeper and Darker is a content mod of blocks, items, armor, tools and a new dimension called the Otherside. The sources describe no machines, multiblocks, power or fluid systems for it. The "machine" side of the mod comes from other mods in the pack that process its blocks.[1][7]
The Sculk Transmitter
The one gadget-like item the sources mention is the Sculk Transmitter, and there is an advancement for acquiring one. The mod's text strings show it links to another block. A transmitter can show as linked or unlinked, it can refuse a block with the message "Cannot link to block", and it warns you when the linked block is missing or unloaded.[1][9]
Mod recipes: smelting, stonecutting and smithing
The mod's own recipes are simple. Smelting Cobbled Gloomslate gives you Gloomslate. The stonecutter turns cobbled gloomslate into Chiseled Gloomslate. In total the dump shows 95 stonecutting recipes that take this mod's blocks and make this mod's blocks, so the stonecutter is the main way to get stairs, slabs, walls and the other shaped variants.[7]
Stonecutting

The Resonarium Axe is made at a smithing table from a Resonarium Plate plus an iron axe.[7]
Processing with other mods in the pack
This is where the pack adds most of the machine handling. Each entry below is marked in the recipe dump as either changed or added by the pack, so it is not just mod default behavior.[7]
- Create crushing: gloomslate coal ore and gloomslate copper ore have pack-changed crushing recipes. Coal ore gives a Nugget of Experience, Cobbled Gloomslate and 3 coal. Copper ore gives 11 copper clumps, a Nugget of Experience and cobbled gloomslate.[7]
- Create sandpaper polishing: the pack adds a recipe that polishes Gloomslate into Polished Gloomslate.[7]
- Mekanism crushing and enriching: a Gloomslate Brick Slab can be crushed into a Gloomslate Tile Slab or enriched into a Polished Gloomslate Slab. Both are pack-changed. The dump also counts 50 Mekanism crushing recipes for this mod's blocks, but they are not all written out.[7]

How do you progress through Deeper and Darker?
7 parts
Progression in this pack revolves around one big fight: the Warden. The Deeper and Darker quest chapter builds its path around it, and beating it leads to the portal to the Otherside, Ancient City loot and a gear tier that upgrades Netherite. Here's the path as the quests lay it out.[5]
The main path
- Kill the Warden. It drops several items, but the one that matters most is the Heart of the Deep. It also drops Warden Carapace and Echo Shards, which are useful for crafting other items. See "Heart of the Deep" quest.[5]
- Use the Heart of the Deep on a frame of Reinforced Deepslate to open the portal to the Otherside. Nothing can block the portal frame, and that includes Sculk.[5][6]
- Visit an Ancient City and loot its chests for a Smithing Template. See "Warden Upgrade Template" quest.[5]
- Craft a Reinforced Echo Shard. The easiest place to loot Echo Shards is Ancient Cities, and the Warden's carapaces are another part of it. See "Reinforced Echo Shard" quest.[5]
- Use the template and the shard in the Warden smithing recipes to upgrade Netherite gear into Warden gear.[5][7]
The Heart of the Deep is also tied to the ATM Star chapter, so don't throw it away. When a Warden dies it has a chance to drop one. See "Heart of the Deep" quest.[6]
Warden Upgrade Template
The quest says Ancient City chests are where you find your first template. After that it can be duplicated, and the quest gives that as 7 Diamonds and a Sculk Block. The pack changed this duplication recipe, so go by the in-pack version below.[5][7]

Reinforced Echo Shard
The quest calls this a crafted item that needs a few ingredients, including a Warden drop. It also mentions that Phantoms spawn when you haven't slept for a few days, so more restless nights means more Phantoms.[5]

Warden gear: the top tier
Warden gear is a direct upgrade over Netherite, made with smithing recipes. The Basic Armor chapter pitches it as the alternative to upgrading Netherite into Allthemodium or anything else. See "Warden Armor" quest and "Warden Armor" quest.[5][7][10]
The other armor pieces follow the same smithing pattern, each starting from its Netherite counterpart.
Each armor piece has 1 more Armor Point and 1 more Armor Protection than its Netherite counterpart, but no more Knockback Resistance. The quest also says the helmet has giant horns like the Warden and the chestplate has a heart spot.[5]
The tools barely change from Netherite. The Warden pickaxe has the same tier and speed, and the shovel and hoe keep the same speed too. The real gain is higher attack damage, which means the Warden hoe out-damages every vanilla hoe. See "Warden Tools" quest.[5]
The Warden Sword and Warden Axe each deal 1 heart more damage than their Netherite versions and have more durability. The axe can still chop trees efficiently. See "Warden Weapons" quest.[5]
Where they sit in the tool tiers
The Basic Tools chapter lists the Warden Pickaxe under Tier 5, while the Resonarium Pickaxe sits under Tier 4. For swords, the Warden Sword is listed at 9 attack damage and the Resonarium Sword at 7.[8]
The Resonarium tools are smithing recipes that use a Resonarium Plate on an iron tool.[7]
Extra Otherside gear
Two more quests unlock after the Stalker, Shattered and Sculk Snapper entries. Those mobs are where the quests say the extra materials for these items come from.[5]
- Sonorous Staff: hold right click to charge, then release to fire a Sonic Blast. It has a slight cooldown and it uses durability. See "Sonorous Staff" quest.[5]
- Soul Elytra: works like a normal Elytra with more durability and armor points. Phantom Membranes can't repair it, but enchantments still can. See "Soul Elytra" quest.[5]

Soundproof Glass is a side unlock that also follows the Sculk Snapper. It dampens sound like Wool does, so a Sculk Sensor or Shrieker covered by it won't hear sounds, but you can see through it. See "Soundproof Glass" quest.[5]
The Sculk Transmitter is a very rare find in Ancient Temple chests. Shift right click a block with a GUI to bind it, then use it to open that block from anywhere. Shift right click the air to unbind. See "Sculk Transmitter" quest.[5]
Exploring the Otherside biomes
The rest of the chapter is a checklist of what each biome offers. A few quick pointers:[5]
- Blooming Caverns: Bloom Berries grow here and are the only food source in the Otherside. You'll also find Blooming Stem, Ice Lily and Glowing Roots.[5]
- Echoing Forest: Echo Log comes from Echo Trees, which also hold Sculk Gleam. The floor is Echo Soil.[5]
- Overcast Columns: Gloomy Cactus and Crystallized Amber (needs Silk Touch). Gloomslate replaces Sculk Stone here.[5]
- Deeplands: Sculk Tendrils spawn rarely, and Sculk Vines can spawn here and in Blooming Caverns.[5]
How does Deeper and Darker work with other mods?
4 parts
Deeper and Darker doesn't add its own machines, so most of its links to other mods come from recipes the pack added or changed. Here's what the pack data shows: Create, Mekanism, Productive Trees, Farmer's Delight and a late-game compass recipe all touch the mod's items.[7]
Create: crushing the Otherside's ores
The pack changes Create crushing recipes for the ores found in Cobbled Sculk Stone and Cobbled Gloomslate. Each of the two stones has a version for coal, copper, diamond, emerald, gold, iron, lapis and redstone. The iron version for Sculk Stone is shown below as an example.[7]
Every one of these crushing recipes also gives a Nugget of Experience. The main drop depends on the ore: coal, diamond, emerald, lapis and redstone give the vanilla item, while copper, gold and iron give Copper Clump, Gold Clump and Iron Clump. The dump doesn't show drop chances or amounts, so I can't tell you those.[7]

Wood processing
Echo wood and bloom wood plug into the pack's sawing and cutting machines. Mekanism sawing covers echo logs, Echo Hanging Sign, Echo Pressure Plate and bloom stems. The planks you get are Echo Planks and Bloom Planks, and the by-product is Sawdust. Here is the echo log recipe, then the bloom one the pack added.[7]

Wither's Compass
The pack added a shaped recipe for the Wither's Compass that takes Heart of the Deep alongside items from several other mods. That makes beating the Warden part of the road to that compass. The Heart is the Warden's most important drop, and the quest chapter also uses it to open the Otherside portal.[5][7]

Quests
In the Basic Tools chapter, a quest in "Basic Tools" is a Tier 4 quest that accepts Resonarium Pickaxe as one of several pickaxe options. The other options come from other mods.[8]
Which All the Mons quests use Deeper and Darker?
4 parts
Same as in the All the Mons 1.3.0 guide
Deeper and Darker has its own quest chapter in the pack, called "Deeper and Darker". Its items also show up in three other chapters: Basic Tools, Basic Armor and The ATM Star. The main chapter takes you from the Warden fight through gear upgrades, with a pile of biome-exploration quests on the side.[3][4][11][12]
The Warden path
This is the backbone of the chapter, in the order the quests unlock.[3]
- "Heart of the Deep" quest comes after killing the Warden. You hand in Heart of the Deep, which you use on a frame of Reinforced Deepslate to open the portal to the Otherside. Nothing can block the portal frame or it won't work. The Warden also drops Warden Carapace and Echo Shards.[3]
- "Warden Upgrade Template" quest unlocks after the Otherside and visiting an Ancient City. You hand in Smithing Template. The quest says you find these in Ancient City chests, and that they can be duplicated.[3]
- "Reinforced Echo Shard" quest unlocks after the Otherside and killing the Warden. You hand in Reinforced Echo Shard, a crafted item. The quest text points you to Phantom Membrane, Echo Shards (easiest from Ancient Cities) and Warden Carapaces.[3]
- "Warden Armor" quest needs both the template and the shard quests done. You hand in the full set: Warden Helmet, Warden Chestplate, Warden Leggings and Warden Boots.[3]
- "Warden Tools" quest and "Warden Weapons" quest have the same two prerequisites. Tools accepts Warden Pickaxe, Warden Shovel or Warden Hoe. Weapons accepts Warden Sword or Warden Axe.[3]
Warden Armor is a direct upgrade to Netherite, with 1 more Armor Point and 1 more Armor Protection per piece, but no Knockback Resistance. The tools keep Netherite's tier and speed and only gain attack damage, and the quest notes the Warden Hoe out-damages every vanilla hoe. The sword and axe get 1 Heart more damage and extra durability.[3]
Late-game gadgets
- "Sonorous Staff" quest asks for Sonorous Staff. It unlocks after the Stalker, Shattered and Sculk Snapper quests. Hold right click to charge it, then release for a Sonic Blast. It has a cooldown and durability.[3]
- "Soul Elytra" quest asks for Soul Elytra and has the same three prerequisites. It has more durability and armor points than a normal Elytra. Phantom Membranes can't repair it, but enchantments can.[3]
- "Soundproof Glass" quest asks for Soundproof Glass and unlocks after the Sculk Snapper quest.[3]
- "Sculk Transmitter" quest asks for Sculk Transmitter and unlocks after the Ancient Temples quest. The quest calls it very rare and says it turns up in Ancient Temple chests.[3]
Biome and block quests
The rest of the chapter is a set of collect-one-item quests, each unlocked by a biome quest. The biome quests themselves aren't in the sources I have, so I can't say what they ask for.[3]
- Deeplands: "Sculk Tendrils" quest (Sculk Tendrils) and "Sculk Grime" quest (Grime Ball).[3]
- Echoing Forest: "Echo Trees" quest (Echo Log), "Echo Soil" quest (Echo Soil) and the untitled a quest in "Deeper and Darker" (Sculk Gleam).[3]
- Blooming Caverns: "Blooming Wood" quest (Blooming Stem), "Bloom Berries" quest (Bloom Berries), "Ice Lilies" quest (Ice Lily), "Blooming Moss" quest (Blooming Moss Block) and "Glowing Roots" quest (Glowing Roots).[3]
- Overcast Columns: "Gloomy Cacti" quest (Gloomy Cactus), "Crystallized Amber" quest (Crystallized Amber) and "Gloomslate" quest (Cobbled Gloomslate).[3]
- Multiple biomes: "Sculk Stone" quest (Cobbled Sculk Stone) needs the Deeplands, Echoing Forest and Blooming Caverns quests. "Sculk Vines" quest (Sculk Vines) needs Blooming Caverns and Deeplands.[3]
Deeper and Darker items in other chapters
- Basic Tools: four untitled quests follow the "Basic Tools!" quest. a quest in "Basic Tools" is a Tier 4 pickaxe quest that accepts Resonarium Pickaxe among several mods' pickaxes. a quest in "Basic Tools" is a 7 Attack Damage sword quest that accepts Resonarium Sword among others. a quest in "Basic Tools" is a 9 Attack Damage quest that asks for the Warden Sword. a quest in "Basic Tools" is a Tier 5 pickaxe quest that accepts Warden Pickaxe or the Undergarden's forgotten pickaxe.[11]
- Basic Armor: "Warden Armor" quest asks for the four Warden Armor pieces. The quest text pitches it as the upgrade for Netherite armor and says you'll need a few Warden drops.[12]
- The ATM Star: a second "Heart of the Deep" quest unlocks after the Deeper and Darker chapter. The Heart of the Deep is a chance drop when a Warden dies, and it is used for the ATM Star as well as the Ancient City portal. Keep the portal empty, Sculk included.[4]
