What is Botany Pots?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10 8.1 guide

Botany Pots adds the Botany Pot, a block that grows all kinds of crops. You can use it as decoration, or to make farming certain crops much easier. The mod was inspired by Davenonymous's Bonsai Trees mod.[1]

The pack includes Botany Pots 21.1.44 for NeoForge 1.21.1. It was first included in an earlier version of the pack, 4.6 or before.[2]

What it gives you

  • Harvesting a crop in a pot automatically replants the seed.[1]
  • A Hopper upgrade lets the pot harvest itself and push items into a chest or another block with an inventory.[1]
  • Pots come in seventeen different colors.[1]
  • Crops, soils and fertilizers are defined through datapacks, and CraftTweaker can remove, modify or add them.[1]

How it works in practice

Craft a pot, then pick the crop you want and a soil that suits it. Wheat grows in dirt, for example, and nether wart grows in soul sand. Right click the pot with the soil first, then with the seed, and growth starts.[1]

Growth takes a while, but bone meal and other fertilizers speed it up. When the crop is ready, right click it to harvest and replant in one go. To take items out of the pot, sneak and right click with an empty hand, or just break the block.[1]

Who it is for

It suits anyone who wants low-effort, compact farms, or a nicer-looking way to grow crops. The simple right-click workflow makes it easy to start, and the Hopper upgrade covers automation.[1]

Unverified The sources do not show where Botany Pots fits in this pack's progression. They do not show it on the ATM Star path, in any quests, or in any guidebook. The project page lists crop support for several other mods, but the sources do not confirm which of those are in this pack or whether the pack changes any recipes or values.

How do you get started with Botany Pots?

4 parts

Welcome to Botany Pots! The idea is simple: you grow crops inside a pot block, and harvesting automatically replants the seed. Here is the order I'd go in.[1]

Step 1: Craft a Botany Pot

Everything starts with the pot itself. In this pack there are many pot styles, such as terracotta, glazed terracotta, concrete and brick. Each style has its own recipe. I'll use the Brick Botany Pot as the example, and you can swap in any other style you like.[3]

The other colors and materials follow the same pattern in this pack.

Step 2: Plant and harvest

  1. Choose a crop and the soil it needs. Certain crops need certain soils. For example, wheat grows in dirt and nether wart grows in soul sand.[1]
  2. Right click the pot with your soil first, then right click it with your seed. That starts the growth.[1]
  3. Crops take a while to grow. Right click with bone meal or another fertilizer to speed things up.[1]
  4. When the crop is fully grown, right click it to harvest. A new seed is planted automatically.[1]
  5. To take items back out of the pot, sneak and right click it with an empty hand. Breaking the block works too.[1]
Tip: If a seed won't go into your soil, the game shows a tooltip starting with "Can not be planted in" followed by the soil name. That means you need a different soil for that crop.[4]

Step 3: Automate with a hopper pot

Once manual harvesting gets old, upgrade to a hopper pot. It harvests itself and puts the items into a chest or any other block with an inventory. The pack gives you two ways to make it: upgrade a pot you already have, or use the one-step shortcut recipe. Here is the brick version, Brick Hopper Botany Pot.[1][3]

Every style also has a waxed version, such as the Brick Waxed Botany Pot, made from the matching plain pot.[3]

How does Botany Pots work?

5 parts

Botany Pots is a simple-looking mod with a few rules worth knowing. The Botany Pot is a block that grows crops, and it works as decoration too. Here's how the pot behaves, based on what the sources confirm.[1]

Soil, seed and growth

A pot needs two things: a soil and a seed. Right click the pot with the soil first, then with the seed, and growth starts. Crops are picky about soil. The mod page gives wheat in dirt and nether wart in soul sand as examples. If you try a soil that doesn't suit the crop, the game tells you it can't be planted in that soil.[1][4]

Growth takes a while, but bone meal and other fertilizers speed it up when you right click the pot with them. Once the crop is ready, right click it to harvest. The seed is replanted automatically.[1]

Tip: To take items back out of a pot, sneak and right click it with an empty hand. Breaking the block works too.[1]

Hopper pots and automation

The Hopper Botany Pot upgrade is the automation option. It lets the pot harvest itself and put the items into a chest or any other block with an inventory. For example, Black Hopper Botany Pot is the hopper version of Black Botany Pot.[1][3]

In this pack each hopper pot has two recipes. One upgrades an existing pot, and a "quick" version crafts the hopper pot directly. Here are both for the black terracotta version:[1][3]

Pot variants in this pack

The mod page advertises seventeen colors. In this pack, the black and blue pots come in terracotta, glazed terracotta and concrete versions, each as a plain pot, a hopper pot and a waxed pot. For example, there's Blue Glazed Botany Pot, Blue Concrete Hopper Botany Pot and Black Concrete Waxed Botany Pot. The recipe dump only shows part of the list, so I can't confirm every color from it.[1][3]

The blue concrete hopper pot upgrade.

A basic pot is crafted from the matching colored block, and a waxed pot is made from a finished pot of the same kind. Here are both for black concrete:[3]

Tools in a pot

The mod includes an enchantment called Idle Hands. Its description says an item with it becomes effectively useless when players use it, and that it negates durability damage when the item is used in a Botany Pot.[4]

Crops, soils and fertilizers

Crops, soils and fertilizers are all defined by datapacks, and CraftTweaker can add, change or remove them. That means the exact crops, soils and fertilizers in this pack depend on its own data, not on the mod's defaults.[1]

How do you progress through Botany Pots?

3 parts

Botany Pots in this pack doesn't have a tiered upgrade ladder in the recipes I can see. The variety comes from the material you build the pot out of, and then from optional add-on forms: a hopper version and a waxed version. Every recipe I can confirm is a plain crafting-table recipe, so you can start as soon as you have the materials.[3]

The base pot

Every base pot is a shaped crafting recipe that combines a building block with a flower pot. The block you pick decides which pot you get. The recipes shown cover bricks, deepslate bricks, end stone bricks, plain terracotta, glazed terracotta and concrete, with colored variants in black, blue, brown, cyan and gray concrete. The recipe list I have is cut off, so more variants may exist.[3]

The simplest place to start is the Brick Botany Pot. If you want a colored look, the Blue Botany Pot, Cyan Glazed Botany Pot and Black Concrete Botany Pot all follow the same pattern.[3]

The hopper version

Each material also has a hopper version, such as the Brick Hopper Botany Pot or the Deepslate Brick Hopper Botany Pot. You can craft it in a pair of ways. You can turn a finished base pot into its hopper version with a shapeless recipe, or use the shaped shortcut recipe, which goes straight from raw materials and skips the base pot.[3]

The waxed version

Each material also has a waxed version, for example the End Stone Brick Waxed Botany Pot. It is a shapeless recipe that starts from the matching finished base pot, so craft the base pot first.[3]

Tip: The hopper shortcut recipe is there for convenience. If you already know you want a hopper pot, skip the base pot and craft the hopper version straight from the materials.[3]

What changed in Botany Pots between versions?

3 parts

All the Mons 1.3.0 ships Botany Pots 21.1.44. The mod has been in the pack since All the Mons 0.3.0-beta or earlier, so these are the mod's own recent changes that you get in this version.[5]

21.1.44

  • Coral drops no longer have tool requirements, and their loot tables were simplified.[6]
  • Tall and short grass, and tall and short ferns, now drop their items without needing silk touch.[6]

21.1.42

  • Fixed Farmers Delight rich soil not growing dirt based crops.[7]

21.1.41

  • Updated build dependencies. Nothing here changes how the mod plays.[8]

The pack's own changelogs have no entries for this mod, so there is nothing pack specific to report here.[5]
