What is Productive Trees?

1 part

Productive Trees adds a big collection of tree species, 159 in total, and the whole mod is built around breeding them. This pack includes version 1.21.1-1.1.0. If you want to see every tree and which parents make it, the mod's own guide points you to JEI.[1][2]

The core idea is simple: put one tree next to another tree near some bees and let them cross-pollinate. For bees to do it, the leaves of both trees must be within 4 blocks of the nest or hive, and the bees need flowers nearby. Each trip from flower to hive triggers a pollination attempt on a nearby leaf, and a spyglass helps you spot which leaves got pollinated.[3]

You can also do it by hand. Run collected leaves through a pollen sifter to get Pollen, then use the pollen on a leaf to pollinate it and get a new species. Check JEI to see which pollen goes on which leaves.[3][4][5]

If you want to automate it, the Pollen Sieve Upgrade goes in an advanced beehive from Productive Bees and has the bees collect pollen from nearby trees. The collection area follows your range upgrades. A second sieve upgrade won't increase the yield.[6]

Watch out: The mod's own guide says it is in beta and not feature complete. How grown trees look is still under development.[3]

Where it fits in the pack

The ATM Star path includes the "Productive Trees" quest quest, which asks for Pollen. The quest text says this mod ties into Productive Bees, because bees are what you use to breed trees. The next step on that path is "Socotra Dragon Sapling" quest, which is a breeding chain:[7]

  1. Breed Jungle with Dark Oak to get Teak Sapling.[7][8]
  2. Breed Acacia with Teak to get Balsa Sapling.[7][8]
  3. Breed Balsa with Dark Oak to get Cocobolo.[7]
  4. Breed Cocobolo with Balsa to get Wenge.[7]
  5. Breed Wenge with Cocobolo to get Socotra Dragon Sapling.[7]

The mod also has its own quest chapter. Some saplings come from structure chests, for example Black Ember Sapling from Bastion chests and Soul Tree Sapling from End City chests. Others are bred from parents, such as Beech Sapling from Oak and Birch.[8]

Two machines get their own quests: "Stripping" quest for the Stripper, which strips logs using axes you put in the machine, and "Sawing" quest for the Sawmill, which turns logs into sawdust and more planks than crafting gives you.[8][9]

How do you get started with Productive Trees?

3 parts

Welcome to Productive Trees! The whole mod comes down to one idea: put one tree next to another tree near some bees and you get a new tree species. The mod has 159 trees, and it is still in beta, so how the grown trees look is still being worked on.[2][3]

Step by step

  1. Open the Productive Trees quest chapter. It lists the parent trees for each species. a quest in "Productive Trees" (Beech) and a quest in "Productive Trees" (Silver Lime) both list Oak + Birch as parents, so they are great first targets. Many later trees chain off those two, for example a quest in "Productive Trees" (Alder) from Beech + Birch.[8]
  2. Grab the rare saplings that only come from structures. The quests point to Bastion chests for Black Ember Sapling, Shipwreck chests for Blue Yonder Sapling, and End City chests for Soul Tree Sapling. Ancient City chests give Firecracker Sapling, Desert Pyramid chests give Flickering Sun Sapling, and Suspicious Sand and Gravel in Cold Ocean Ruins gives Brown Amber Sapling.[8][10]
  3. Plant two parent trees close together and let bees do the pollinating. The leaves of both trees must be within 4 blocks of the bee nest or hive, and the bees need flowers nearby. Each trip from a flower to the hive triggers a pollination attempt on a nearby leaf. A spyglass helps you spot which leaves were pollinated.[3]
  4. Prefer to do it by hand? Collect leaves and run them through a pollen sifter to get Pollen, then use the pollen on a leaf to pollinate it. Check JEI to see which trees breed together, so you know which pollen to use on which leaves.[3][4][5][10]
Tip: To automate pollen, install the Pollen Sieve Upgrade in an advanced beehive from Productive Bees. The collection area is affected by range upgrades: the base range is 4 and each range upgrade adds 2 blocks. More than one sieve upgrade will not increase the yield.[3][6]

Machines worth making early

The Stripper ("Stripping" quest) strips logs automatically using axes you put in the machine. The Sawmill ("Sawing" quest) cuts logs into sawdust and more planks than you would get from crafting, and sawdust can be used to make paper.[8][9]

Growing trees in pots

Once you own a sapling, the pack also has a Botany Pots crop recipe for each tree, and the pack changed these. The Beech crop takes a Beech Sapling and yields Beech Leaves, Beech Log, more saplings and Beechnut.[11]

How does Productive Trees work?

6 parts

Productive Trees is less about big multiblocks and more about breeding trees. The mod adds 159 trees, and most of the action is pollination: you move pollen between leaves to get new species. A few small machines and upgrades help you automate that. The mod is also in beta and not feature complete, and the guide says the growth features (how trees look when grown) are still under development.[2][3]

Breeding with bees

The simplest setup is to put one tree next to another tree near some bees. The leaves of the two trees you want to breed must be within 4 blocks of the nest or hive, and the bees need flowers nearby. Each trip from the flower to the hive triggers a pollination attempt on a nearby leaf.[3]

The hive can be simulated, and each range upgrade increases the working area by 2 blocks. The base range is 4. A spyglass helps you spot which leaves have been pollinated.[3]

Tip: Not sure which trees breed together? The mod's own guide tells you to check JEI for breeding pairs and for any other recipe from the mod.[2][5]

Pollinating by hand

You can skip the bees. Collect leaves and run them through a pollen sifter, which extracts pollen from leaves. Use the resulting pollen on a leaf to pollinate it and get a new tree species. Pollen collected by bees works the same way.[3][4][5][10]

Which pollen goes on which leaves depends on the species pair you want, so look it up in JEI first.[5]

Automating pollen with the Pollen Sieve Upgrade

Install the pollen sieve upgrade in an advanced beehive from Productive Bees and the bees will collect pollen from nearby trees. Some of the pollen the bees collect is sifted and deposited in the hive. The collection area is affected by range upgrades. Installing more than one sieve upgrade does not increase the yield.[6][10]

The mod also has an allergy bee ingredient. Its description says it puts in an extra effort to collect pollen so your allergies don't act up while working with trees.[10]

Machine upgrades

The pollen sifter, the sawmill and the stripper can each take time upgrades. For the pollen sifter and the sawmill, an upgrade can be installed for faster processing, and multiple upgrades give a greater time decrease. Each of these machines also has a second, stronger upgrade, described as twice as good as the other one.[10]

The stripper is a bit different. Its upgrade tooltip says each upgrade increases the number of items processed per operation by 4, and that multiple upgrades give a greater time decrease. The stripper takes the bark off wood, leaving it stripped, and it requires an axe to operate.[9][10]

Tree products and Tree Tap

The mod is compatible with Tree Tap, which opens up some additional tree products to extract. Maple sap can be extracted from Sugar Maple trees, and the sap makes Maple Syrup.[12][13]

Bookshelves in this pack

Each tree's bookshelf, such as the Alder Bookshelf, is crafted with a book and that tree's planks, such as Alder Planks. The pack has changed these recipes from the mod's own. Here is the in-pack recipe for the Alder one:[11]

Unverified No config files for this mod are available as sources here, so any pack-specific tuning of the mod's values beyond the changed bookshelf recipes is not confirmed.

How do you progress through Productive Trees?

6 parts

The mod has 159 trees, and this pack turns the breeding web into a quest chapter. Each quest asks you to get one sapling and unlocks after the quests for its parent trees. Think of it as a family tree you work down, starting with a handful of base saplings.[2][8]

How you get new trees

You can breed with bees: put two trees next to each other near a hive. Their leaves must be within 4 blocks of the nest or hive, and the bees need flowers nearby. Each trip from flower to hive triggers a pollination attempt on a nearby leaf. Range upgrades add 2 blocks each, on top of a base range of 4.[3]

You can also do it by hand. The Pollen you get from bees or from a pollen sifter can be used on a leaf to create a new species. The sifter extracts pollen from leaves. Check JEI to see which pollen goes on which leaves for each cross.[4][5]

Tip: A spyglass makes it easier to spot which leaves have been pollinated.[3]

Tier 1: the starting saplings

Every quest in this group unlocks straight after the chapter's opening quest, "Productive Trees" quest. They split into saplings you breed from vanilla trees and saplings you find as loot. The parent trees below are the ones each quest lists.[8]

Tier 2: first crosses

Each of these quests unlocks after one or two of the starters. Here are the main branches.[8]

Tier 3 and beyond: deeper chains

From here the quests combine saplings you already bred, so the order matters. These are the chains the quest chapter lays out.[8]

Machines the quests teach you

Two quests cover the mod's wood machines. "Stripping" quest introduces the Stripper, which strips logs automatically using axes you put in the machine.[8][9]

"Sawing" quest introduces the Sawmill. It cuts logs into sawdust and gives more planks than crafting would. Sawdust can be used to make paper. Fustic logs also give Fustic, and Brazilwood and Logwood logs also give Haematoxylin.[8]

Growing the trees

The Botany Pots crop recipes for Productive Trees saplings are marked as changed by the pack. Here is Beech as an example. It returns leaves, logs, the sapling and a beechnut.[11]

How does Productive Trees work with other mods?

3 parts

Productive Trees doesn't live on its own in this pack. The pack ties it into other mods through sawmill recipes, a bee-related conversion, and a few custom crafts that call for its saplings and fruit.[11]

Sawmill planks for other mods' woods

The Sawmill cuts logs into Sawdust and gives more planks than normal crafting would. The pack adds sawmill recipes for wood from other mods, so you can run their logs through it too.[8][11]

Allthemodium is covered too: allthemodium:ancient_planks, Demonic Planks and allthemodium:soul_planks all have sawmill recipes, one per log variant.

The same treatment extends to wood from Ars Nouveau, Cobblemon, Deeper Darker, Eternal Starlight, Forbidden Arcanus, Integrated Dynamics, Occultism, Silent Gear and Undergarden. Examples are Archwood Planks, Apricorn Planks, Echo Planks, Lunar Planks, Edelwood Planks, Menril Planks, Otherplanks, Netherwood Planks and Grongle Planks.[11]

Productive Bees

The Upgrade Pollen Sieve goes into an advanced beehive from Productive Bees, and the bees then collect pollen from nearby trees. Range upgrades affect the collection area, and extra sieve upgrades don't increase the yield.[6][11]

The pack changed the recipe that turns this upgrade into the Upgrade Pollen Sieve. It also changed the bee conversion that turns Pollen into the allergy bee.[11]

Crafts that use Productive Trees items

A few of the pack's custom recipes need Productive Trees items alongside items from many other mods. The Dragon Soul needs a Socotra Dragon Sapling, and Magical Soil needs a Moonlight Magic Crepe Myrtle Sapling. Both recipes were added by the pack.[11]

Which All the Mons quests use Productive Trees?

6 parts

Productive Trees shows up in the quest book as its own chapter, plus an entry quest in The ATM Star chapter. The chapter is basically a breeding tree: you collect a few base saplings, then work your way through crossbred ones.[7][8]

Where it starts: The ATM Star

The entry quest "Productive Trees" quest asks you to hand in Pollen. Its text says the mod is tied to Productive Bees: trees don't breed with wheat, they breed with bees. A follow-up quest in the same chapter, "Socotra Dragon Sapling" quest, asks for a Socotra Dragon Sapling.[7]

The Productive Trees chapter

Every first-tier quest in the chapter unlocks after that entry quest. Each quest asks you to submit one sapling, and the subtitle shows the pairing it comes from, like Oak + Birch. Nearly everything after that unlocks from the quests above it, so you can follow the chains.[8]

First-tier breeding quests

Saplings from loot

Some first-tier quests can't be bred. Their saplings come from structure loot:[8]

The loot saplings feed the next tier. For example, a quest in "Productive Trees" (Black Ember + Soul Tree) and a quest in "Productive Trees" (Firecracker + Flickering Sun) both build on them.[8]

Machine quests

Two quests cover the mod's machines. "Stripping" quest asks for the Stripper, which strips logs automatically using axes put in the machine. "Sawing" quest asks for the Sawmill. It cuts logs into sawdust and more planks than crafting gives you. Sawdust can be used to make Paper, Fustic Logs also give Fustic, and Brazilwood and Logwood Logs also give Haematoxylin.[8]

Longer chains

The deeper quests unlock in order. The Beech branch runs through a quest in "Productive Trees", a quest in "Productive Trees" and a quest in "Productive Trees" to a quest in "Productive Trees", and from there to a quest in "Productive Trees" and a quest in "Productive Trees".[8]

The citrus branch goes from a quest in "Productive Trees" through a quest in "Productive Trees", a quest in "Productive Trees", a quest in "Productive Trees", a quest in "Productive Trees", a quest in "Productive Trees" and a quest in "Productive Trees". It continues to a quest in "Productive Trees" (mango), which is one of the two prerequisites for the final Star Fruit Sapling quest, a quest in "Productive Trees".[8]

The other prerequisite for that Star Fruit quest is a quest in "Productive Trees". It comes after the spice line: a quest in "Productive Trees", a quest in "Productive Trees", a quest in "Productive Trees" and a quest in "Productive Trees".[8]

The crepe myrtle line starts at "Purple Crepe Myrtle Sapling" quest and continues through a quest in "Productive Trees" and a quest in "Productive Trees" to "Moonlight Magic Crepe Myrtle Sapling" quest.[8]

Unverified Several quests, including the crepe myrtle line and the Copper Beech, White Ipe, Pink Ipe, Purple Ipe and Purple Blackthorn quests, list Luck as a second parent and depend on quest 0661E9669E639621. That quest's contents aren't in the available sources, so what it asks for is unverified. The Pika Star chapter text was also cut off, so I can't confirm whether it has any Productive Trees quests.
