What is Gaze (A Malum Addon)?

2 parts

Gaze is an expansion addon for Malum, the dark-magic mod. It builds on Malum's themes and adds new progression, systems and content for players who want to keep going deeper into the Arcane. Its tagline is "Gaze deeper into the darkness of the soul."[1]

This pack ships Gaze version 1.1.7.1, so everything on this page is about that build.[2]

Who it is for

Gaze is for you if you already enjoy Malum and want more to do with it. It is a fan project made for Malum, and it was intended for the Malice modpacks. Compatibility with other 1.21.1 mods is planned.[1]

Watch out: The developers say Gaze is still in active development. Some features are unfinished, bugs can happen, and the mod is prone to massive overhauls and tone shifts. Expect things to change between versions.[1]

Where it fits in the pack

Gaze shows up in the general_magic quest chapter, right alongside Malum content. One quest asks you to hand in an Umbral Spirit and the Encyclopedia Unveiled. It unlocks after an earlier quest in the chapter.[3]

The next quest, a quest in "Magic", follows on from that one and asks for the Splintered World. The quest that introduces both Gaze items is a quest in "Magic".[3]

Unverified The sources don't say what the Encyclopedia Unveiled or the Splintered World actually do, how to obtain them, or how Gaze's content scales later in the game. No in-jar guidebook was found for this mod, so check in-game before relying on any of those details.

How do you get started with Gaze (A Malum Addon)?

2 parts

Gaze is an addon that expands Malum, so the Gaze items in this pack are crafted through Malum's own crafting types: spirit infusion, runeworking and soul binding. The mod's project page says it's still in active development, so some features may be unfinished.[1][4]

Here's the order I'd go in. It follows the pack's quest line, so you always have something to check off.[3]

Your first steps

  1. Make the Encyclopedia Unveiled. It's a spirit infusion recipe, and quest a quest in "Magic" asks you to hand in both it and an Umbral Spirit.[3][4]
  2. Try a rune or two. Gaze's runes are made through Malum's runeworking, and the ones in this pack are Rune of Eir ("The impulse to travel"), Rune of Gymir ("The impulse to grasp"), Rune of Nott, Rune of Svalinn, Rune of Mimir, Rune of Hodr, Rune of Fafnir and Rune of Ymir. All of them use Umbral Spirit, so it's worth stocking up while you're on the first quest.[4][5]
  3. Build the Enchantment Workbench. It's another spirit infusion recipe, and the in-game book describes it as "Not quite etched in stone".[4][5]
  4. Aim for the Splintered World. Quest a quest in "Magic" comes right after the Encyclopedia quest and asks for it. Check the recipe before you commit to it.[3][4]

The recipes

The Splintered World is the item the second quest in the chain asks for.

Tip: Both quests sit in the general magic chapter, and the Splintered World quest comes after the Encyclopedia quest. Finish them in that order.[3]

How does Gaze (A Malum Addon) work?

5 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Here's the honest picture first: the sources for this mod don't describe any machines, multiblocks, power, fluids or pipe-style automation. Gaze is an addon for Malum, so it builds on Malum's spirit-based crafting rather than adding its own power network. What the sources do cover is how you craft its items, how Umbral Spirits drop, how the Soul Ward numbers are set, and what its rites are for.[1][6]

Watch out: Gaze is still in active development. Some features are unfinished, bugs can happen, and the mod can get big overhauls, so mechanics may shift between versions.[1]

How Gaze items are made

Everything Gaze adds in this pack is crafted through Malum's own crafting types: spirit infusion, runeworking and soul binding. The recipe blocks in this section show the exact in-pack recipes for the Enchantment Workbench, the Spirit Saber, the Soul Rapier and the Splintered World.[6]

The Enchantment Workbench is described in the lore as "Not quite etched in stone", and its book entry is tied to "Spiritual Empowerment". The sources don't explain how its interface works, so I can only show you how to craft it.[6][7]

Runes and Umbral Spirits

Gaze's runes are made through runeworking, and every one of them needs an Umbral Spirit as an ingredient. Here's the Rune of Eir as an example.[6]

Rune of EirMod recipe

Runeworking (malum)

Recipe id: malum:runeworking/rune_of_eir

The in-game book gives each rune a short tagline. Only some runes have one in the sources I was given:[7]

The Rune of Ymir and Rune of Fafnir are also made by runeworking, but the sources give no description of what they do.[6]

Umbral Spirits come from kills made with a Veil Dagger. Players always drop them, and the list of other entities that can drop them is set in umbralDropEntities. In this pack that list contains only the villager.[8]

  • umbralDropChance is 0.1 here, on a range from 0.0 to 1.0, for the configured entities. That is the same as the mod default, so the pack hasn't changed it. Players always drop them.[8]
  • doVillagerUmbralsOnServer is true, so villagers can drop Umbral Spirits on a multiplayer server too. Singleplayer is always allowed.[8]
  • farmUmbrals is true, so mobs holding Veil's Edge (a zombie, for example) can trigger umbral drops from the configured mobs or players.[8]

Soul Ward settings

Some config options tie other stats into the Soul Ward. integrityRatio sets how much Soul Ward Integrity you get per point of Armour Toughness. It's 5 in this pack, the same as the mod default, and it can range from 1.0 to 10.0.[8]

healingConversionAttributes lists healing attributes that convert into Soul Ward Recovery Rate. This pack lists only apothic_attributes:healing_received. The config notes that other mods' options haven't been tested.[8]

Rites

Gaze adds its own lesser rites for the aerial, aqueous, arcane, earthen, infernal, sacred and wicked types, plus a corrupt version of each and an umbral rite. The book entries describe them with taglines such as "Manipulating the Weather", "Manipulating the Undead" and "Manipulating Earth's Bounty".[7]

The rites lore says they offer a way to pull creatures into traps and items into containers, which is about as close to automation as the sources get. Gaze rites are switched on in this pack, because disableGazeRites is false.[7][8]

Bestiary and particles

The Gaze bestiary is a "record of lost souls". With bestiary set to true, entries only show up after you've made kills, and you need to open your statistics to reveal them. fancyParticles is also on, and the config notes it is not currently a client-side option.[7][8]

How do you progress through Gaze (A Malum Addon)?

3 parts

Gaze has a short quest path in this pack. It sits in the general_magic chapter and has two quests that you complete one after the other.[3]

  1. a quest in "Magic" unlocks after an earlier quest in the same chapter. Its tasks are to hand in Umbral Spirit and Encyclopedia Unveiled.[3]
  2. a quest in "Magic" unlocks after the first quest. Its task is to hand in Splintered World.[3]

First, Encyclopedia Unveiled

Encyclopedia Unveiled is made through Spirit Infusion, so it's your entry point into the addon's quest line. Here is the exact in-pack recipe:[4]

Spirit Infusion (malum)

Recipe id: malum:spirit_infusion/encyclopedia_unveiled

Step 2: Splintered World

Splintered World is also a Spirit Infusion recipe, and it's the item the second quest asks for.[3][4]

Everything else in Gaze

The quests above are the only Gaze quests in the sources. The rest of the addon's items are still craftable, and the recipe dump shows which Malum crafting method each one uses. Spirit Infusion covers the weapons and tools, the accessories and the workbench:[3][4]

The runes are made with Malum's runeworking instead: Rune of Ymir, Rune of Eir, Rune of Gymir, Rune of Fafnir, Rune of Nott, Rune of Svalinn, Rune of Hodr and Rune of Mimir. Every one of these recipes is a mod recipe, with no pack changes shown in the sources.[4]

Gaze also has Soul Binding recipes for the Domain of Swords and the Pact of Encroaching Malice. Here are both in-pack recipes:[4]

Unverified The sources do not define a formal tier ranking for Gaze items, so the order in which you should craft the weapons, accessories and runes is unconfirmed. Only the two-quest chain above is confirmed as the pack's progression.

How does Gaze (A Malum Addon) work with other mods?

5 parts

Gaze is an expansion addon for Malum, so nearly all of its integration is with Malum. In this pack's recipes and quests, every Gaze item is made through Malum's own crafting systems with Malum materials. The sources show no recipes or quests that tie Gaze to any other mod, apart from a few vanilla Minecraft items.[1][4]

Spirit infusion

Most of Gaze's gear is made at Malum's spirit infusion. That covers accessories like the Necklace of Arcane Charge, Ring of Mage Ethics, Ring of Idle Meditation and Sloth Brooch, and weapons like the Spirit Saber, Soul Rapier, Veil's Edge and Seidhr. The Enchantment Workbench, Spirit-Channel Pouch, Swift Spiral and Splintered World are infused too. These recipes build on Malum materials, such as Malignant Pewter Plating, which several of them use.[4]

A typical Gaze weapon, built mostly from Malum materials.

The Encyclopedia Unveiled is an infused upgrade of Malum's Encyclopedia Esoterica, so you need the Malum book first.[4]

Spirit Infusion (malum)

Recipe id: malum:spirit_infusion/encyclopedia_unveiled

Vanilla materials

A few of the infusion recipes also reach into vanilla Minecraft items. The clearest examples are the Ring of Mage Ethics, the Swift Spiral and the Splintered World, so plan some non-Malum gathering for those.[4]

Spirit Infusion (malum)

Runeworking

Gaze adds runes that you craft with Malum's runeworking, and every one of them uses an Umbral Spirit. Examples are the Rune of Ymir, Rune of Fafnir, Rune of Mimir, Rune of Hodr, Rune of Svalinn and Rune of Nott. The Rune of Eir and Rune of Gymir also take a vanilla item.[4]

Quests

Two quests in the general magic chapter bring Gaze and Malum together. Quest a quest in "Magic" asks you to hold both an Umbral Spirit and the Encyclopedia Unveiled. Quest a quest in "Magic" follows it and asks for the Splintered World.[3]

Tip: Gaze is a fan addon that is still in active development, and its project page says compatibility with other 1.21.1 mods is planned. For now, think of it as an extension of Malum.[1]

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Gaze (A Malum Addon)?

1 part

In this pack, Gaze shows up in one quest chapter: general_magic. It has two quests that involve the mod, and both are submission quests where you hand in an item. They have no titles in the pack, so you'll know them by their IDs.[3]

The order to do them in

  1. First, finish the quest that comes right before the Gaze ones, "The Reaping of Souls" quest. The chapter data only lists it as a prerequisite, so what it asks for is unverified.[3]
  2. Next is a quest in "Magic". It has two tasks: submit Umbral Spirit and Encyclopedia Unveiled.[3]
  3. Last is a quest in "Magic". It unlocks after the previous quest and asks for a single item, Splintered World.[3]

So the Gaze content is a short chain. The first quest brings in the Malum spirit item together with the Gaze encyclopedia, and the second asks for the Splintered World item.[3]

Unverified The quest data doesn't give titles, descriptions or rewards for these quests, and it doesn't say how to obtain the required items. Check the in-game quest book for those details.

Which Gaze (A Malum Addon) config options matter?

3 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Gaze keeps its settings in config/gaze-common.toml. The options you're most likely to care about cover Umbral Spirit drops, Soul Ward and the rites. Here is how this pack sets each one.[8]

Umbral Spirit drops

  • umbralDropChance is 0.1 in this pack, the same as the mod default. It is the chance for configured entities to drop Umbral Spirits when killed with a Veil Dagger, and it can be set from 0.0 to 1.0. Players always drop them at 100%.[8]
  • umbralDropEntities is set to minecraft:villager only. Players are always on this list, so you don't need to add them.[8]
  • doVillagerUmbralsOnServer is true, so Villagers can drop Umbral Spirits on a multiplayer server. Singleplayer is always allowed.[8]
  • farmUmbrals is true. That means mobs holding Veil's Edge, such as Zombies, can trigger umbral drops from the configured mobs or players.[8]

Soul Ward

  • integrityRatio is 5 in this pack, which matches the mod default. It controls how much Soul Ward Integrity you get for a single Armour Toughness point, and it can be set from 1.0 to 10.0.[8]
  • healingConversionAttributes is set to apothic_attributes:healing_received. Healing-related attributes in this list are converted into Soul Ward Recovery Rate if present. The config notes that options other than Apothic haven't been tested.[8]

Rites, bestiary and visuals

  • disableGazeRites is false, so Gaze rites are not disabled.[8]
  • bestiary is true. Bestiary entries require kills to be visible, and you have to open statistics to reveal them.[8]
  • fancyParticles is true. The config notes that this is not currently a client-side option.[8]
Tip: If you're hunting for Umbral Spirits, umbralDropChance is the value to watch, since it sets how often a Veil Dagger kill pays off on configured mobs. This pack leaves it at the mod default of 0.1.[8]
