What is Ars Hex?
Ars Hex is one of the mods in the pack. This pack ships version 5.0.4b, built as the file ars_hex-1.21.1-5.0.4b.jar. It was already in the pack by the 1.21.0 release.[1]
Unverified I can't confirm from the available pack data what Ars Hex adds in gameplay terms, who it is best suited to, or where it fits in the pack's progression. There is no in-jar guidebook or platform description to draw on, and the ATM Star path and the pack's quests don't cover the mod. Check the mod in-game before building a plan around it.
How do you get started with Ars Hex?
3 parts
Ars Hex adds a few items that sit between Ars Nouveau spellcasting and Malum's spirit gear. Every Ars Hex recipe in this pack's recipe dump is marked as changed by the pack, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults. Everything below follows the in-pack recipes.[2]
No quests in this pack involve the mod, so nothing in the quest book will walk you through it. The order below is my suggestion, not something the pack enforces.[2]
Start with the Soul Shatter glyph
Begin with Glyph Soul Shatter. In a spell it shatters the enemy's soul, damaging it with a chance of releasing the spirits inside. This one is a glyph recipe, so it is crafted the way Ars Nouveau glyphs are.[2][3]
You can tune the glyph with augments. Amplify increases the damage dealt and Dampen reduces it. Randomize randomizes the damage, and Fortune applies looting when the spell kills a mob.[3]
Next, the Enchanter's Scythe
After the glyph, make the Enchanter's Scythe. It is crafted at the Ars Nouveau enchanting apparatus, and the pack changed its recipe.[2]

Soulstained Steel Scythe
- 3× any archwood log
- any gold storage block
- any source storage block

Then pick your threads
The mod's threads are the next step. Each one is also crafted at the enchanting apparatus, and the pack changed each recipe. Choose the one that suits how you play.[2]
- Magic Proficiency increases your magic proficiency, boosting the magic damage of many spellcasting types. Take it if you lean on spell damage.[3]
- Spirit Spoils increases the spirits released when you kill enemies with the proper methods.[3]
- Soul Ward increases the Soul Ward capacity and integrity, so it is the defensive pick.[3]

How does Ars Hex work?
5 parts
Ars Hex is a bridge mod that adds glyphs, armor threads and gear on top of Ars Nouveau. In this pack, the sources I have cover one glyph, three threads, one weapon and two config options. They don't describe any machines, multiblocks, power, fluid or item automation for it.[2][3][4]
Unverified Machines, multiblocks, fluid or power handling and automation for Ars Hex are not documented in the available sources, so this section does not cover them.
Soul Shatter glyph
Glyph Soul Shatter is a spell effect that shatters the enemy's soul. It damages the target and has a chance of releasing the spirits inside.[3]
In this pack the recipe for the glyph has been changed, and it is made at the Ars Nouveau glyph crafting station.[2]
These are the values the pack sets in the glyph's config file:[4]
- The glyph is enabled (general.enabled) and is not a starter glyph (general.starter), so you have to unlock it.[4]
- Its glyph tier is 2 (general.glyph_tier) and its cost is 30 (general.cost). Both match the mod defaults.[4]
- The damage value is 5 (general.damage) and the amplify value is 3 (general.amplify). Both are the mod defaults too.[4]
- The glyph may appear up to 2,147,483,647 times in one spell (general.per_spell_limit), which is effectively no limit. No invalid combinations are set (general.invalid_combos).[4]
Augments
Soul Shatter accepts four augments, and each one does something different:[3]
- Amplify increases the damage dealt.[3]
- Dampen reduces the damage dealt.[3]
- Randomize randomizes the damage dealt.[3]
- Fortune applies looting when the spell kills a mob.[3]
Threads
Ars Hex adds threads, which are perk items for Ars Nouveau armor. The pack has changed the recipes for all three threads below, and each is made at the enchanting apparatus.[2][3]
- Magic Proficiency increases your magic proficiency, boosting the magic damage of many spellcasting types.[3]
- Spirit Spoils increases the spirits released when you kill enemies with the proper methods.[3]
- Soul Ward increases the Soul Ward capacity and integrity.[3]

Enchanter's Scythe

Unverified What the Enchanter's Scythe does, and how it interacts with the soul and spirit mechanics, is not described in the available sources.
Irons Spellbooks damage bonuses
The common config has two options that control how Irons Spellbooks damage bonuses apply to Ars Nouveau spells. The pack leaves IronsDamageBonusMerge set to false, so the general damage bonuses from Irons Spellbooks are not added to Ars Nouveau spells.[5]
IronsDamageBonusScaling is the scaling factor for school-specific Irons Spellbooks damage bonuses when they apply to Ars Nouveau spells. It is set to 1, the mod default, and accepts values from 0.0 to 100.0.[5]
How do you progress through Ars Hex?
2 parts
The sources here show no tier ladder for Ars Hex. What they do show is that the pack changed how its items are made, and every one of those recipes leans on Malum materials. Plan on getting into Malum's soulstained steel and spirit gear before you start on Ars Hex.[2]
Unverified No quests in this pack involve Ars Hex, so the sources here show no quest-driven order for it. Treat the grouping below as a way to read the recipes, not as an official tier list.
Glyph stage
The one glyph in the recipe dump is Glyph Soul Shatter. It is crafted as a glyph, and the pack changed its recipe so it needs Malum materials.[2]
Enchanting Apparatus stage
The rest of the Ars Hex items in the dump are made at the Enchanting Apparatus, and the pack changed those recipes too. The first is the Enchanter's Scythe, which upgrades a Malum scythe.[2]

- any gold storage block

The threads are the other Apparatus recipes. Each one starts from a blank thread and adds Malum materials, so you need to be collecting spirits before you can make them.[2]

How does Ars Hex work with other mods?
3 parts
In this pack, Ars Hex ties Ars Nouveau together with Malum. Every Ars Hex recipe in the recipe dump uses Malum items, such as spirits, soulstone and soulstained steel gear. Each of these recipes is marked as changed by the pack, so don't expect the standard mod versions.[2]
Enchanter's Scythe
The Enchanter's Scythe is an upgrade of Malum's Soulstained Steel Scythe. You craft it at the Ars Nouveau Enchanting Apparatus, and the recipe also asks for archwood logs, gold storage blocks and source storage blocks, each accepted from the matching tag.[2]

Threads
The Ars Hex threads in the dump all start from an Ars Nouveau Blank Thread and are made at the Enchanting Apparatus. The Malum side comes from spirits, Refined Soulstone and a few crafted Malum items, so Malum progress gates these threads.[2]
- Magic Proficiency uses Aerial Spirit, Earthen Spirit and Soulwoven Silk.[2]
- Spirit Spoils uses Arcane Spirit, Eldritch Spirit and Wicked Spirit, plus the Ring of Esoteric Spoils.[2]
- Soul Ward uses Arcane Spirit, a Rune of Reinforcement and Soulstained Steel Plating.[2]

Soul Shatter glyph
The Glyph Soul Shatter is a spell glyph, and its recipe is an Ars Nouveau glyph recipe. The pack's version combines Ars Nouveau's Manipulation Essence with a Soulstained Steel Sword and a Wicked Spirit from Malum.[2]
Which Ars Hex config options matter?
2 parts
Ars Hex has very little to configure in this pack. There are only two files to know about: a common file that links Irons Spellbooks damage bonuses to Ars Nouveau spells, and a per-glyph file for the Soul Shatter glyph.[4][5]
Irons Spellbooks damage bonuses
- IronsDamageBonusMerge is false in the pack. When it is true, the general damage bonuses from Irons Spellbooks are added to Ars Nouveau spells, so in this pack they are not. The source doesn't list a mod default for this option, so I can't tell you whether the pack changed it.[5]
- IronsDamageBonusScaling is 1, the same as the mod default. It is the scaling factor for school-specific Irons Spellbooks damage bonuses when they apply to Ars Nouveau spells, and it accepts values from 0.0 to 100.0.[5]
Soul Shatter glyph
Soul Shatter has its own file with the usual Ars Nouveau glyph options. Wherever the file shows a mod default, the pack's value matches it, so the pack hasn't rebalanced the numbers.[4]
- general.enabled is true, so the glyph is active. general.starter is false, so it is not a starter glyph.[4]
- general.cost is 30, the same as the mod default.[4]
- general.glyph_tier is 2, the same as the mod default. It accepts values from 1 to 99.[4]
- general.damage is 5 and general.amplify is 3. Both match the mod defaults.[4]
- general.per_spell_limit is 2,147,483,647, the same as the mod default, so there is effectively no cap on how many times the glyph can appear in one spell.[4]
- general.augment_limits is set to ars_nouveau:glyph_amplify=2, which limits Amplify to 2 applications on this glyph. The source shows no mod default for this option, so I can't say whether the pack changed it.[4]
- general.augment_cost_overrides and general.invalid_combos are both empty, so there are no augment cost overrides and no blocked glyph combinations.[4]
