What is Cognition?

1 part

Cognition is all about experience. It gives you new ways to store, move and use your XP, and it powers its machines with Cognitium, which the mod describes as pure knowledge given corporeal form. This pack includes Cognition 2.4.13.[1][2]

The core device is the Experience Obelisk. It stores XP levels without loss by converting them to and from a fluid called Cognitium. Other Cognition devices can be linked to it with the Staff of Attunement.[3]

Where it sits in the quest book

Cognition is told in the "Gearing Up" chapter, in the "Exploration & Combat" group. It is chapter 14 of 31 in the book and has 94 quests. Cognition shares that chapter with other mods, and the rest of the chapter's quests are in the quest book.[3]

The Cognition quests form their own small tree inside the chapter:[3]

The Cognitive Gear quest covers the tool and armor families. Per the quest text, the tools match diamond attack values and mining speeds but have less durability and a lower harvest level. Each armor piece adds a point of toughness and half a block of reach.[3]

Nothing in the quest sources puts Cognition on the ATM Star path. It is an optional side branch of the "Gearing Up" chapter.[3]

How do you get started with Cognition?

5 parts

Cognition is all about experience: how you use it, store it and produce it. The pack's quest book covers it in the "Gearing Up" chapter (group "Exploration & Combat", chapter 14 of 31), starting with "Cognition: Using your Knowledge" quest. That quest asks for Cognitive Flux and Astute Assembly, so that is where we begin too.[3]

Step 1: Cognitive Flux and Cognitive Amalgam

Cognitive Flux is the entry-level material. One craft gives you 4 of them, so you can start stocking up right away.[4]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: cognition:cognitive_flux

Flux then goes into a furnace or a blast furnace to become Cognitive Amalgam, which you will need for the Obelisk, the Staff of Attunement and the Molecular Metamorpher.[4]

Smelting

Blasting

Recipe id: cognition:cognitive_amalgam_blasting

Step 2: Astute Assembly

Astute Assembly is the other item the first quest wants, and it shows up in the recipes for the Experience Obelisk, the Experience Fountain, the Molecular Metamorpher and the cognitive gear. One craft makes 2. The quest text says some of the starting materials get easier to make once a few devices are set up, and that the book provides some extras to get you going.[3][4]

Step 3: Experience Obelisk and Staff of Attunement

The Experience Obelisk is the core device of the mod. It stores your XP levels losslessly by converting them to and from a fluid called Cognitium, and it passively absorbs nearby experience orbs. Its quest, "Experience Obelisk" quest, comes right after the intro quest.[3][5]

Watch out: The pack raises the Obelisk's capacity to 2,147,483,640 mB (the mod default is 100,000,000). It is set by [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Experience Obelisk Capacity.Capacity]]. The config notes warn that going above the default may cause unintended XP loss or gain, because of a rounding error in Minecraft's XP handling.[6]

Step 4: Molecular Metamorpher

The Molecular Metamorpher uses XP from a bound Obelisk to infuse materials. Its quest, "Molecular Metamorpher" quest, says it makes some of the mod's recipes cheaper and is a required crafting method for some of Cognition's resources. Its recipe needs an Accelerator, and one Accelerator craft makes 4.[3][4][5]

Once it is bound to your Obelisk, you can make Cognitive Alloy and Cognitive Crystal with the Metamorpher's own recipes. Those two materials go into most of the mod's other crafts.[4][5]

Where to go next

The "Gearing Up" chapter has more quests than fit in this guide, so open the quest book for the full text.[3]

How does Cognition work?

7 parts

Cognition is all about player XP: new ways to store it, move it around and spend it. The mod says you can power its machinery with Cognitium, which it describes as pure knowledge given corporeal form.[1]

The Experience Obelisk

The Experience Obelisk is the heart of the mod. Its in-game description says it handles experience storage and retrieval, and that it passively absorbs nearby experience orbs.[5]

In this pack the Obelisk's capacity is set to 2,147,483,640 mB, the highest value the option allows. The mod default is 100,000,000 mB. The config warns that going above the default can cause XP to be lost or gained, because of a rounding error in Minecraft's XP handling. The capacity is set by [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Experience Obelisk Capacity.Capacity]].[6]

The Obelisk only supports XP fluids listed in [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Allowed Experience Fluids.AllowedFluids]], and each of those fluids has to be tagged forge:experience. This pack's list covers experience fluids from several other mods.[6]

Binding machines to an Obelisk

The descriptions of the Experience Fountain and the Molecular Metamorpher both say they require binding to an Obelisk. The Staff of Attunement is described as the item that binds, queries and configures the mod's blocks.[5]

  1. Use the staff on the Obelisk. The game shows a message that the Obelisk position was saved.[5]
  2. Use it on the machine you want to link. The game shows a message that the block is bound to the Obelisk.[5]
  3. To check a block later, query it with the staff. The game's message tells you which Obelisk the block is bound to, or says the block is not yet bound.[5]

The game also has messages for setting a bound block's redstone sensitivity to Enabled or Disabled. If the Obelisk is too far away or no longer exists, you get an error message instead. The binding range is 48 blocks, which is the mod default, and the config says the same range applies to the Memory Tablet. It is set by [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Binding Range.Range]], and the config suggests lowering it if bound blocks misbehave.[5][6]

The Memory Tablet's description says it gives remote Obelisk access and experience recovery, and that you SHIFT + Right Click an Obelisk to link it. Its messages confirm a link, report which Obelisk you are currently linked to, and warn if another player is using the Obelisk.[5]

Experience Fountain and Cognitium buckets

The Experience Fountain's description says it dispenses experience orbs at an adjustable rate and requires binding to an Obelisk. The game's messages name four rate settings: Slow, Moderate, Fast and Hyper.[5]

The fountain also handles bucket transfers, according to the JEI tooltips. To fill a Cognitium Bucket, right click a fountain bound to an Obelisk, and the Obelisk must have enough XP. Emptying works the same way, but the Obelisk must have enough space.[5]

Filling (cognition)

  • Cognitium Bucket Filling
  • Bucket

Recipe id: cognition:filling/cognitium_bucket_filling_dummy

Filling a bucket goes through a bound fountain, as described above.

The Enlightened Amulet is described as teleporting nearby XP orbs to you and merging them for faster absorption, and SHIFT + Right Click toggles it. Its range is 8 blocks in this pack, set by [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Enlightened Amulet.Range]]. In this pack it ignores orbs from Experience Fountains but not orbs from Infected Bookshelves.[5][6]

Molecular Metamorpher

The Molecular Metamorpher's description says it blasts ingredients with a beam of concentrated XP and converts them into more advanced materials, and that it requires binding to an Obelisk. Its screen has Lock and Unlock buttons. The Transforming Focus is described as permitting the Metamorpher to perform transforming recipes.[5]

The pack has 7 Metamorpher recipes. One example is Mending Neurogel, which is described as restoring the durability of damaged items when you click it onto them. It may also be used on anvils.[4][5]

Molecular Metamorphosis (cognition)

Recipe id: cognition:metamorpher/mending_neurogel

Infected bookshelves and agar

The Bibliophage is described as infecting bookshelves and generating XP in the process. An infected bookshelf decays slowly and releases XP orbs as it does. In this pack the numbers are:[5][6]

  • Infected Bookshelf: 50 spawns before it decays, orbs worth 12 XP.[6]
  • Infected Archiver's Bookshelf: 100 spawns, orbs worth 12 XP. Its description says it lasts twice as long as an ordinary bookshelf.[5][6]
  • Infected Enchanted Bookshelf: 100 spawns, orbs worth 24 XP. Its description says it lasts twice as long as and produces orbs with twice the value of an ordinary bookshelf.[5][6]
  • Each of these bookshelf types has a spawn delay between 300 and 500 ticks.[6]

Infection also spreads. The JEI tooltip says you infect with Bibliophages or by placing a block next to infectious blocks. Each infected bookshelf type has a 0.02 chance per second to infect a valid adjacent block.[5][6]

Infecting (cognition)

Recipe id: cognition:infecting/infected_bookshelf

Agar blocks are infectious blocks that tune the shelves around them. Fluorescent Agar can be inoculated to turn it into Nutrient Agar, and querying it with the staff shows its infection progress out of 4.[5]

  • Nutrient Agar is described as not decaying and having a slow infection rate, with a 0.005 chance per second.[5][6]
  • Insightful Agar is described as reducing the spawn delay of surrounding bookshelves. Its infectivity is 0.01.[5][6]
  • Extravagant Agar is described as boosting the orb value of surrounding bookshelves. Its infectivity is 0.02.[5][6]

Insightful and Extravagant Agar apply bigger bonuses the closer they sit to a shelf: 1.35 for a shared face, 1.15 for a shared edge and 1.1 for a shared vertex. These match the mod defaults.[6]

The JEI description says Infected Bookshelves drop Forgotten Dust when broken (100%). On decay the pack sets the chance to 0.5, raised from the mod default of 0.33, via [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Bookshelf Settings.DropDustChance]].[5][6]

Bookshelves for enchanting

The Archiver's Bookshelf is described as having an enchantment power bonus of 1.5 around an Enchanting Table. The Enchanted Bookshelf is described as having 2.0.[5]

Accelerators

The Accelerator is described as launching entities in the direction it is facing. The Linear Accelerator is described as launching them in the direction it is pointing. A shapeless recipe turns a Linear Accelerator back into a plain Accelerator.[4][5]

How do you progress through Cognition?

5 parts

In this pack, Cognition is taught in the "Gearing Up" quest chapter (group "Exploration & Combat", chapter 14 of 31 in the book). The quests give you a ladder: an entry quest, then branches for gear, the Obelisk and the Dispeller, then the Metamorpher, then Bibliophages.[3]

Step 1: Entry materials

The chain starts with "Cognition: Using your Knowledge" quest, which asks you for Cognitive Flux and Astute Assembly. The quest says these entry-level materials get easier to make once a few of the devices are set up, and that the pack gives you some extras to start with.[3]

One craft makes 2 Astute Assembly.

Step 2: The Experience Obelisk

"Experience Obelisk" quest comes right after the entry quest. The Experience Obelisk is the core device of the mod. It stores XP levels without loss by converting them to and from a fluid called Cognitium. You link other Cognition devices to it with the Staff of Attunement, which the quest calls Cognition's "wrench". The Obelisk can also pick up XP orbs around it on its own.[3]

"Experience Fountain" quest follows the Obelisk quest and covers the Experience Fountain, which spills XP from a bound Obelisk when it gets a redstone signal or when a player stands on top.[3]

"Precision Dispeller" quest follows the entry quest directly and covers the Precision Dispeller. It strips chosen enchantments and can remove curses at a cost of 30 levels. Bound to an Obelisk, it uses the Obelisk's storage for XP gains and costs when it can.[3]

Cognitive gear

"Cognitive Gear" quest also follows the entry quest. It asks for one armor piece, one tool and one item from the bow, flint and alloy, shears or rod group. The quest says the tools match diamond for attack value and mining speed, but have less durability and a lower harvest level. A full armor set gives 3 more total armor points than iron. Each piece adds a point of toughness and half a block of reach.[3]

The armor, tools, bow, shears and rod are each a smithing upgrade of the matching vanilla item. The pickaxe below is one example.[4]

Smithing Transform

Recipe id: cognition:cognitive_pickaxe

Step 3: The Molecular Metamorpher

"Molecular Metamorpher" quest comes after the Obelisk quest. The Molecular Metamorpher spends XP from a bound Obelisk to infuse materials. That makes some recipes cheaper and is a required crafting method for some of the mod's resources. The Transforming Focus expands it by turning various vanilla items into niche variants. The quest also says XP costs use point values and will not take more experience levels than needed, and you can lock item slots for automation.[3]

Cognitive Alloy and Cognitive Crystal each have a Metamorpher recipe as well as a normal crafting recipe.[4]

One craft makes 4 Accelerators, and the Metamorpher itself needs one.

Step 4: Bibliophages and agar

"Infectious XP Generation" quest is the last step in this chain and follows the Metamorpher quest. It asks for a Bibliophage, an observation task and Fluorescent Agar. Bibliophages break bookshelves down into XP orbs until only Forgotten Dust is left. Infected Bookshelves spread the phages to other connected bookshelves. The Archiver's Bookshelf and the Enchanted Bookshelf can be infected too, and the quest says they produce more XP value over their decay than regular shelves.[3][4]

If you are short on bookshelves, you can build a nest. Place Fluorescent Agar among infected shelves and the phages turn it into Nutrient Agar, which spreads infection onto the 26 blocks around it. You can pick the agar up and upgrade it. Insightful Agar speeds up infection and decay, and Extravagant Agar also raises the XP value you get from decay.[3]

Tip: To stop phages spreading on a shelf you don't want eaten, use the Staff of Attunement on the infected shelf.[3]

How does Cognition work with other mods?

3 parts

Cognition connects to other mods in this pack through three recipes the pack added itself, plus two of the mod's own recipes that take items from other mods. Here is what the recipes and quests show.[3][4]

Recipes added by the pack

The pack lets you turn Cognitive Flux into Block of Aluminum with an ae2:transform recipe. It is not a mod default.[4]

The third is a molecular metamorphosis recipe that makes Realized Transcendence. It combines Cognition's Cognitive Crystal with an item from Malum, Fused Consciousness. This is the kind of crafting the "Molecular Metamorpher" quest quest covers, and it describes the Molecular Metamorpher as a required method for some of Cognition's resources.[3][4]

Where it sits in the quest book

Cognition's quests are in the "Gearing Up" chapter, in the "Exploration & Combat" group (chapter 14 of 31). The chapter has 94 quests, and the rest of the Cognition progression is in the quest book. Besides Cognition, it covers gear and enchanting from other mods, such as the Apotheosis enchanting quest "The Secrets of Enchanting" quest.[3]

Which FTB Skies 2: Aero quests use Cognition?

2 parts

All of Cognition's quests sit in one chapter, "Gearing Up". It is in the "Exploration & Combat" group, chapter 14 of 31 in the book, and it is a big chapter of 94 quests shared with Apotheosis, Iron's Spells and other mods. The Cognition quests form one small tree.[3]

The Cognition quest tree

  1. "Cognition: Using your Knowledge" quest is the entry point. It asks for Cognitive Flux and Astute Assembly. The quest explains that Cognition expands on the use, storage and production of experience. It also says the entry-level materials get easier to make once a few devices are set up, and that the book provides some extras.[3]
  2. "Experience Obelisk" quest asks for the Experience Obelisk. The quest calls it the core device of the mod. It stores XP levels losslessly by converting them to and from a fluid called Cognitium. Other devices link to it with the Staff of Attunement, and a Memory Tablet gives remote access to an Obelisk in the general area.[3]
  3. "Cognitive Gear" quest asks for one armor piece, one tool and one ranged or utility item: any of the Cognitive helmet, chestplate, leggings or boots, any of the sword, shovel, pickaxe, axe or hoe, and any of the bow, Flint and Cognitive Alloy, shears or rod.[3]
  4. "Precision Dispeller" quest asks for the Precision Dispeller. Unlike the vanilla Grindstone, it strips unwanted enchantments selectively and can remove curses at a cost of 30 levels. Binding it to an Obelisk makes it use the Obelisk's storage for XP gains and costs instead of yours, when it can.[3]
  5. "Molecular Metamorpher" quest comes after the Experience Obelisk quest. It asks for the Molecular Metamorpher and the Transforming Focus. The Metamorpher uses experience from a bound Obelisk to infuse materials, and it is a required crafting method for some of Cognition's resources. The Transforming Focus converts various vanilla items into niche variants.[3]
  6. "Experience Fountain" quest also comes after the Experience Obelisk quest. It asks for the Experience Fountain. Once bound to an Obelisk, it spills XP into the world when activated with redstone, and also whenever a player stands on top.[3]
  7. "Infectious XP Generation" quest comes after the Molecular Metamorpher quest. It asks for the Bibliophage, an observation task, and Fluorescent Agar.[3]

What to know about each step

The gear quest is worth reading before you craft anything. It says Cognitive tools match diamond attack values and mining speeds, but have less durability and a lower harvest level, with extra reach. A full armor set gives only 3 more total armor points than iron, but each piece adds a point of toughness and half a block of reach.[3]

The last quest is Cognition's XP generation. Bibliophages steadily break bookshelves down into XP orbs until only Forgotten Dust is left. Infected shelves spread the phages to other connected bookshelves. Fluorescent Agar is made from that dust and placed among infected shelves, where the phages turn it into Nutrient Agar that spreads infection to the 26 surrounding blocks.[3]

Tip: If you want to stop an infected bookshelf from decaying, the quest says to use a Staff of Attunement on it.[3]

Which Cognition config options matter?

4 parts

Most of Cognition's config lives in one file, config/cognition-common.toml. This pack changed only two values from the mod defaults. The other values below either match the mod default or have no default listed in the file.[6]

What this pack changed

  • [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Experience Obelisk Capacity.Capacity]] is 2,147,483,640 mB in this pack. The mod default is 100,000,000, which the file describes as about 1072 levels' worth. The value you set needs to be divisible by 20.[6]
  • [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Bookshelf Settings.DropDustChance]] is 0.5 in this pack, up from the mod default of 0.33. It is the chance that any infected bookshelf drops Forgotten Dust when it decays. Setting it to 0.0 stops those drops completely.[6]
Watch out: The config notes that setting the obelisk capacity above the mod default may lead to unintended loss or gain of XP, because of a rounding error in Minecraft's XP handling. This pack's capacity is far above that default, so keep it in mind when you store huge amounts of XP.[6]

Fluids and ranges

[[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Allowed Experience Fluids.AllowedFluids]] decides which fluids the obelisk accepts. This pack lists these: mob_grinding_utils:fluid_xp, cofh_core:experience, industrialforegoing:essence, sophisticatedcore:xp_still, enderio:fluid_xp_juice_still, reliquary:xp_still and justdirethings:xp_fluid_source. Any fluid you add also has to be tagged forge:experience.[6]

[[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Binding Range.Range]] is 48 blocks, the mod default. It covers both the Staff of Attunement and the Memory Tablet. If bound blocks stop working correctly, the config suggests lowering it.[6]

[[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Enlightened Amulet.Range]] is 8 blocks, also the mod default. In this pack [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Enlightened Amulet.IgnoresFountainOrbs]] is true and [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Enlightened Amulet.IgnoresBookshelfOrbs]] is false.[6]

Infected bookshelves

The bookshelf values are all at the mod defaults. Each type has its own number of spawns before it decays and its own orb value. All three spawn an orb every 300 to 500 ticks, and all three have an infectivity of 0.02.[6]

  • Infected Bookshelves: [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Bookshelf Settings.Infected Bookshelves.Spawns]] is 50 and [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Bookshelf Settings.Infected Bookshelves.OrbValue]] is 12.[6]
  • Infected Archiver's Bookshelves: [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Bookshelf Settings.Infected Archiver's Bookshelves.Spawns]] is 100 and [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Bookshelf Settings.Infected Archiver's Bookshelves.OrbValue]] is 12.[6]
  • Infected Enchanted Bookshelves: [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Bookshelf Settings.Infected Enchanted Bookshelves.Spawns]] is 100 and [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Bookshelf Settings.Infected Enchanted Bookshelves.OrbValue]] is 24.[6]

Quality of life

[[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Agar Settings.AgarEmitsLight]] is true in this pack. If you run heavy shader settings and lose frames, the config says to set it to false.[6]

[[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Cognitive Bow.Show]] is true, so the bow's projectile velocity and accuracy boost shows in its tooltip. Turn it off if tooltip components appear in the wrong order.[6]

[[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Fluorescent Jelly.Nutrition]] is 2 hunger points and [[config:config/cognition-common.toml#Fluorescent Jelly.Saturation]] is 1. Setting nutrition to 0 disables eating the jelly completely.[6]

What changed in Cognition between versions?

1 part

FTB Skies 2: Aero 1.10.0 ships with Cognition 2.4.13. The mod was already in the pack by version 1.0.3 or earlier, so it has been part of Aero for a long time.[2]

Cognition 2.4.13

  • Transforming Foci can now be enchanted with mending, which stops them losing durability in the Metamorpher.[7]
  • Bugfix: a leftover printout that caused console spam was removed.[7]

The sources here don't show any pack-specific changes to Cognition's values or recipes, so what you see above is the mod's own changelog for the version the pack uses.[2][7]
