What is Ars Caelum?

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 1.0.2 guide

Ars Caelum is part of this pack. It ships version 3.0.0 of the mod, built for Minecraft 1.21.1, and it has been included since version 1.0 or earlier, so it isn't a recent addition.[1]

Unverified The sources here do not show what Ars Caelum does, so this guide doesn't describe its features. They also don't show where the pack's quest book places the mod (chapter, group, or what comes before and after it), or whether the ATM Star path uses it. Check the quest book in-game for any placement.

How do you get started with Ars Caelum?

5 parts

Ars Caelum gives you ritual items that you craft with ordinary shapeless crafting. Most of them conjure an island, and the rest do one handy job each. The sections below are a sensible order to work through them, and every recipe shown is the real in-pack one.[2][3]

Your starting island

The pack has a starter ritual set up in the server config. starter_ritual.ritual_source is 0, which is also the mod default, so the starting island ritual asks for no Source. The island is built from the structure named in starter_ritual.starter_island_rl, which is ars_caelum:starter_island. starter_ritual.ritual_biome is empty, so the ritual does not change the biome.[4]

Sedimentation for cobblestone

Sedimentation converts four nearby water sources and produces cobblestone on the last source it consumes. Augment it with Deepslate to get Deepslate instead. This recipe is the mod's own, and the pack has not changed it.[2][3]

Your first archwood island

Conjure Island: Vexing creates an island of Vexing Archwoods, source berries, mycelium and mushrooms, and converts the area to Mushroom Island. The pack has changed this recipe from the mod's version.[2][3]

Conjure Island: VexingChanged by the pack

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: ars_caelum:ritual_conjure_island_vexing

Watch out: The archwood island rituals need a full jar of Source to begin, and they should be performed at least 14 blocks from any other block. Leave plenty of empty space around where you cast them.[3]

The other archwood islands follow the same pattern. Conjure Island: Cascading makes Cascading Archwoods, coral and sugarcane. Conjure Island: Blazing makes Blazing Archwoods and lava. Conjure Island: Flourishing makes Flourishing Archwoods, moss, glow berries and bamboo. The pack changed all three recipes.[2][3]

Ore islands

The pack adds its own ore island rituals, such as Conjure Island: Iron and Conjure Island: Copper. There are also ones for coal, lapis, gold, lead, aluminum, monazite and black quartz, plus Nether islands for ancient debris, diamond, emerald and platinum.[2]

Iron is the example here, and the other ore islands follow the same pattern.

For many of these, the pack also adds a second recipe for the same item under a different recipe id, so you have another way to craft it. Here is the second Iron one.[2]

Mana Regeneration

Mana Regeneration grants mana regeneration to all players nearby. The pack changed this recipe, so check it before you plan your resources.[2][3]

How does Ars Caelum work?

4 parts

Ars Caelum is all about rituals. Each ritual is an item you craft, and the ones you will meet most often conjure a whole island out of thin air. The sources here cover the rituals, their rules and the starter island config. They don't explain machines, power or automation, so I'm only covering what is confirmed.[2][3]

Island rituals

Most island rituals say they need a full jar of Source to begin. They also carry a warning: perform them at least 14 blocks from any other block. The End Portal island words it a little differently, saying it must be performed 14 blocks away from other blocks. Give yourself plenty of empty space before you start.[3]

Each island has its own theme. Conjure Island: Blazing makes an island of Blazing Archwoods and lava and converts the area to Archwood Forest. Conjure Island: Cascading makes Cascading Archwoods, coral and sugarcane. Conjure Island: Flourishing gives you Flourishing Archwoods, moss, glow berries and bamboo, and converts the area to Mangrove Swamp.[3]

There are more themes. Conjure Island: Geode builds an island in the shape of an Amethyst Geode. The Vexing island has Vexing Archwoods, source berries, mycelium and mushrooms, and converts the area to Mushroom Island. The Deep Dark island is made of Sculk and turns the biome to Deep Dark. Conjure Island: Village is the odd one out: it conjures an archwood village island with several villagers, and its description doesn't mention a Source requirement.[3]

The language file also lists many resource islands, such as Iron, Gold, Lapis, Redstone, Tin, Zinc and Uranium. It lists Nether variants too, such as Diamond (Nether) and Ancient Debris (Nether). The sources here don't give their individual descriptions, so I won't guess at their layouts.[3]

Crafting the rituals

The island rituals are made with shapeless crafting recipes. The pack has changed several of the island recipes: Blazing, Cascading, Flourishing, Geode and Village. The Aluminum, Black Quartz, Coal and Copper island recipes are added by the pack. Here is Blazing as an example of a changed one.[2]

The Village recipe is also changed by the pack.

The pack-added Aluminum, Black Quartz, Coal and Copper islands each come in two recipe variants, one under the ars_caelum namespace and one under arscaelum. Both give the same island ritual. Here are the two Copper ones.[2]

Starter island settings

The pack configures the starting island ritual in the server config file. Four options matter here: starter_ritual.ritual_source, starter_ritual.ritual_biome, starter_ritual.ritual_offset and starter_ritual.starter_island_rl.[4]

Utility rituals

Sedimentation converts four nearby water sources and produces cobblestone on the last source consumed. Augment it with Deepslate to get Deepslate instead.[3]

Recipe id: ars_caelum:ritual_sedimentation

This is the mod's own recipe, unchanged by the pack.

Summon Guardians summons waves of Guardians. Augment it with a Sea Lantern and it summons an Elder Guardian. Mana Regeneration is the third utility ritual, and it grants mana regeneration to all players nearby.[3]

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: ars_caelum:ritual_elder_summon

This is the mod's own recipe, unchanged by the pack.

Watch out: Clear a big empty area before you try any island ritual. Most of them are meant to be performed at least 14 blocks from any other block.[3]

How do you progress through Ars Caelum?

4 parts

In this pack, Ars Caelum is mostly about ritual items that conjure islands, plus a few utility rituals. The recipes lean on Ars Nouveau archwood, and the ore islands also use GeOre materials. Here is how the Ars Caelum rituals break down, going by the in-pack recipes.[2]

Archwood islands

Conjure Island: Vexing, Conjure Island: Blazing, Conjure Island: Cascading and Conjure Island: Flourishing all have recipes the pack has changed, so don't assume the mod's defaults. Each one is built around its own archwood log and sapling, so you need the matching Ars Nouveau tree before you can craft it.[2]

Ore islands

The pack added a ritual recipe for each of these ore islands. Every one is built around the GeOre cluster of its ore.[2]

Conjure Island: IronAdded by the pack

Crafting Shapeless

A typical pack-added ore island recipe. The others have the same shape with their own cluster.

The pack also adds an alternative recipe for each of these ore islands under a different recipe id. It makes the same ritual from the GeOre block of that ore instead of the cluster, so you can go either way.[2]

Geode and Village

Conjure Island: Village is also changed by the pack. Its recipe draws on several archwood types at once, so set up more than one kind of archwood tree before you try it.[2]

How does Ars Caelum work with other mods?

2 parts

In this pack, Ars Caelum connects to other mods through its rituals. The recipes that use items from other mods draw on Ars Nouveau (archwood, Source and a few magical ingredients) and GeOre (ore clusters and blocks). Some vanilla items such as diamonds and blaze rods show up too.[2]

Ars Nouveau

Every Ars Caelum ritual in the recipe data starts from an Ars Nouveau archwood log. Sedimentation and Summon Guardians are plain mod recipes that the pack leaves as they are. Both are built around Cascading Archwood Log, and Sedimentation also asks for 8 Frostaya.[2]

This is the mod's own recipe, not changed by the pack.

The elemental islands Conjure Island: Blazing, Conjure Island: Cascading, Conjure Island: Flourishing and Conjure Island: Vexing are changed by the pack. Each one pairs the matching archwood log and sapling with a diamond.[2]

Conjure Island: BlazingChanged by the pack

Crafting Shapeless

The other elemental islands follow the same pattern with their own archwood colour.

Conjure Island: Village is also changed by the pack. It combines several archwood saplings with a vanilla amethyst block, a diamond block and a blaze rod. Conjure Island: Geode is changed too, and it relies on the Source storage blocks from Ars Nouveau.[2]

The pack has also changed Mana Regeneration. It draws on Abjuration Essence from Ars Nouveau, along with vanilla items and a Source storage block.[2]

GeOre

Most of the ore islands are rituals the pack added, and they are where GeOre comes in. Each one uses the matching GeOre item for its ore, for example Aluminum GeOre Cluster for Conjure Island: Aluminum. The same pattern covers coal, copper, gold, iron, lapis, lead, nickel, osmium, redstone, silver, tin, zinc, uranium and more, including gems like ruby, sapphire and topaz.[2]

The recipe dump lists a cluster variant and a block variant for these ore islands. The cluster variant uses a GeOre cluster plus 3 Source storage blocks. The block variant, under the arscaelum namespace, uses a Source Gem plus 3 GeOre blocks.[2]

Cluster variant, added by the pack.

Conjure Island: AluminumAdded by the pack

Crafting Shapeless

Recipe id: arscaelum:ritual_conjure_island_aluminum

The Nether islands (Ancient Debris, Diamond, Emerald, Platinum, Quartz and Tungsten) work the same way. Their GeOre block variants ask for a Source Gem Block instead of a Source Gem, for example Conjure Island: Diamond (Nether).[2]

Recipe id: arscaelum:ritual_conjure_island_nether_diamond

Block variant for a Nether island, added by the pack.

Which Ars Caelum config options matter?

1 part

Ars Caelum's server config is short, and every option in it is about the starting island ritual. It all lives in config/ars_caelum-server.toml, and here is how this pack sets each option.[4]

Starting island ritual

  • starter_ritual.ritual_source is set to 0 in this pack, which matches the mod default. The allowed range is 0 to 10,000. It is the amount of source required to perform the starting island ritual, so in this pack the ritual doesn't ask you for any.[4]
  • starter_ritual.starter_island_rl is set to "ars_caelum:starter_island", which is the default structure for the starter island. This pack doesn't swap in a different island.[4]
  • starter_ritual.ritual_biome is left empty in this pack. Providing nothing means the ritual does not change the biome. If you want to set one, it takes an id like minecraft:plains.[4]
  • starter_ritual.ritual_offset is set to [-7,-5,-9] in this pack. It is the offset of the structure position for the starting island ritual.[4]

Where the file shows a mod default (the source cost and the island structure), this pack uses that same default. So there is no pack-specific change in this file that you need to work around.[4]
