What is Hephaestus Forge?

Hephaestus Forge is part of this pack's mod list, and the version you get here is 1.0.16. It has been in the pack since version 1.0.2 or earlier, so it is not a recent addition.[1]

The jar the pack ships is hephaestus-neoforge-26.1.2-1.0.16.jar. If you ever need to check that your install matches the pack, that is the file name to look for.[1]

How do you get started with Hephaestus Forge?

5 parts

Welcome to Hephaestus Forge! In this pack the early game is about molten metal: you pour it into a casting table or a casting basin and get items out. What I can confirm here are the recipes, so this section follows those and doesn't cover how to build the smeltery itself.[2]

Step one: make a Blank Cast

Start with the Blank Cast. The pack adds a casting table recipe that makes it from 90 units of Molten Copper, so copper is the first metal to get into liquid form.[2]

Blank CastAdded by the pack

Casting Table (hephaestus)

Recipe id: hephaestus:smeltery/casting/casts/blank_cast

Added by the pack: 90 units of molten copper poured in a casting table.

Step two: make the shaped casts

The other casts use the same casting table and the same amount of molten copper, 90 units each: Ingot Cast, Nugget Cast, Plate Cast, Gear Cast, Rod Cast and Gem Cast. The ingot cast is a handy one to start with.[2]

Casting Table (hephaestus)

Recipe id: hephaestus:smeltery/casting/casts/ingot_cast

Mod recipe: 90 units of molten copper in a casting table.

Step three: cast your first cobalt

A casting table turns 90 units of Molten Cobalt into a Cobalt Ingot. For storage, a casting basin turns 810 units into a Block of Cobalt.[2]

Casting Basin (hephaestus)

Recipe id: hephaestus:smeltery/casting/basin/metal/cobalt/block_cast

Casting basin, 810 units of molten cobalt.

Step four: try an alloy

Alloy recipes combine molten metals into new ones. A simple one is Molten Brass, which takes equal parts Molten Copper and Molten Zinc and makes 180 units from 90 of each.[2]

Alloy (hephaestus)

Recipe id: hephaestus:smeltery/alloying/brass

Mod recipe: 90 units each of molten copper and molten zinc make 180 units of molten brass.

Watch out: The pack changed the steel alloy recipe. In this pack, 90 units of Molten Carbon and 90 units of Molten Iron make 90 units of Molten Steel. Don't rely on what you know from other packs.[2]

Pack-added recipes to know about

  • The pack adds an obsidian alloy recipe: 1,000 units of lava and 1,000 units of water make 288 units of Molten Obsidian.[2]
  • Seared stone can be cast in a basin from 144 units of Molten Seared Stone, also a pack-added recipe.[2]
  • The pack adds a melting recipe that turns 50 units of lava into 90 units of molten steel for the steel plate. Netherite nuggets melt from 50 units of Molten Blaze into 10 units of Molten Netherite.[2]

Added by the pack: 144 units of molten seared stone in a casting basin.

How does Hephaestus Forge work?

5 parts

The sources for Hephaestus Forge in this pack show its recipes and block names, not the rules for building and running its structures. So this section covers what is confirmed: the recipe types (melting, alloying, table casting and basin casting) and the values this pack sets for them.[2][3]

Blocks the mod adds

The language file lists these functional blocks: Seared Melter, Seared Heater, Seared Fuel Tank, Seared Ingot Tank, Seared Casting Tank, Seared Casting Table, Seared Casting Basin, Seared Drain, Seared Duct, Seared Chute, Seared Channel, Seared Faucet, Seared Fuel Gauge and Seared Ingot Gauge. It also lists many decorative seared blocks, such as seared bricks, pavers, tiles and roads, each with slab, stair and wall variants.[3]

Melting

The pack adds its own melting recipes. The recipe dump counts 916 melting recipes that take a vanilla ingredient and make a Hephaestus fluid, with 69 different results. It also counts 467 that take a Hephaestus ingredient. Each group has just 1 distinct ingredient, and the examples written out use lava or Molten Blaze.[2]

  • The steel plate melting recipe turns 50 lava into 90 Molten Steel.[2]
  • The gold adze head recipe turns 50 lava into 180 Molten Gold, and the broad axe head recipe turns 50 lava into 720.[2]
  • The netherite nugget recipe turns 50 Molten Blaze into 10 Molten Netherite. The netherite adze head recipe gives 180 from 50 Molten Blaze, and the broad axe head recipe gives 720.[2]
Watch out: These melting recipes are marked as added by the pack, so the values above are this pack's values, not necessarily the mod's defaults.[2]

Alloying

Alloy recipes combine fluids into a new one. Brass, bronze and constantan below are the mod's own recipes, and the pack adds an obsidian alloy.[2]

Alloy (hephaestus)

Brass is the mod's own alloy recipe.

288× Molten ObsidianAdded by the pack

Alloy (hephaestus)

The pack adds this obsidian alloy recipe.

Casting

Casting turns fluid into solid items. There are 10 table casting recipes in the dump. The casts below each cost 90 Molten Copper. The Blank Cast recipe is added by the pack, while Gear Cast and Gem Cast are the mod's own.[2]

How do you progress through Hephaestus Forge?

    7 parts

Same as in the FTB Evolution 2 1.1.0 guide

Hephaestus Forge in this pack is a recipe-driven path: you work up from seared stone, through copper casts, to alloys and finally to the rare metals. The stages below follow the in-pack recipes, and I flag every place where the pack added or changed something.[6]

    Seared stone and forge bricks

The foundation is Seared Stone. The mod's smelting recipes for Seared Stone, Cracked Seared Bricks, Seared Creeper and Seared Paver are all still there. On top of that, the pack adds a casting basin recipe that makes seared stone from Molten Seared Stone.[6]

    Seared StoneAdded by the pack

    Casting Basin (hephaestus)

    Recipe id: hephaestus:smeltery/casting/basin/misc/seared_stone

Pack-added casting basin recipe for seared stone.

    Forge BrickAdded by the pack

    Casting Table (hephaestus)

    Recipe id: hephaestus:smeltery/casting/table/misc/forge_brick

The pack also adds this casting table recipe for the forge brick.

Seared blocks also come in decorative shapes. The crafting recipes cover slabs, stairs and walls for seared bricks, seared cobblestone, cracked seared bricks and seared creeper, plus a fancy seared brick slab.[6]

    Casts

Next you need casts. The Blank Cast recipe is added by the pack. The Ingot Cast, Nugget Cast, Gem Cast, Gear Cast, Plate Cast and Rod Cast recipes are the mod's own, all made on a casting table.[6]

    Blank CastAdded by the pack

    Casting Table (hephaestus)

    Recipe id: hephaestus:smeltery/casting/casts/blank_cast

    Pack-added casting table recipe.

    Ingot CastMod recipe

    Casting Table (hephaestus)

    Recipe id: hephaestus:smeltery/casting/casts/ingot_cast

One of the mod's own cast recipes.

    Basic alloys

Once you can melt metal, the alloy recipes open up. These are the mod's own recipes and the pack leaves them as they are:[6]

    Alloy (hephaestus)

    Recipe id: hephaestus:smeltery/alloying/brass

Brass as an example of an unchanged mod alloy.

    Pack-tuned alloys

This is where the pack departs from the mod. The steel alloy is changed by the pack, so do not rely on a default recipe from elsewhere. Obsidian and enderium alloys are added by the pack.[6]

90× Molten SteelChanged by the pack

    Alloy (hephaestus)

    Recipe id: hephaestus:smeltery/alloying/steel

Changed by the pack: it makes 90 Molten Steel.

288× Molten ObsidianAdded by the pack

    Alloy (hephaestus)

    Recipe id: hephaestus:smeltery/alloying/obsidian

    Pack-added: makes 288 Molten Obsidian.

180× Molten EnderiumAdded by the pack

    Alloy (hephaestus)

    Recipe id: hephaestus:smeltery/alloying/enderium

    Pack-added: makes 180 Molten Enderium.

Molten Netherite has a mod alloy recipe that makes 360 per batch. The pack also adds melting recipes that produce it from Molten Blaze, covered below.[6]

    Alloy (hephaestus)

    Recipe id: hephaestus:smeltery/alloying/netherite

The mod's netherite alloy, unchanged by the pack.

    Cobalt

Cobalt is cast rather than alloyed. A casting table turns Molten Cobalt into a Cobalt Ingot or a Cobalt Nugget, and a casting basin makes a Block of Cobalt. All of these are mod recipes.[6]

    Block of CobaltMod recipe

    Casting Basin (hephaestus)

    Recipe id: hephaestus:smeltery/casting/basin/metal/cobalt/block_cast

Casting basin recipe for the cobalt block.

    Late game: Molten Blaze melting

The pack adds a large set of melting recipes. Netherite parts and the diamond, emerald and iridium ore melting recipes use Molten Blaze as their only mod input. In the dump, 254 melting recipes use it and they make 19 different results. Gold and iridium tool parts that are written out use lava instead.[6]

10× Molten NetheriteAdded by the pack

    Melting (hephaestus)

    Recipe id: ftb:hephaestus_materials/melting/netherite/nugget

    Pack-added: makes 10 Molten Netherite.

90× Molten DiamondAdded by the pack

    Melting (hephaestus)

    Recipe id: ftb:unification/hephaestus/smeltery/melting/ore/diamond

    Pack-added: makes 90 Molten Diamond.

    Clear glass

Clear Glass is made by a stonecutting recipe the pack adds. Clear Stained Glass and Tinted Clear Glass come from the mod's own shaped crafting recipes.[6]

    Clear GlassAdded by the pack

    Stonecutting

      Recipe id: ftb:glass/stonecutting/hephaestus_clear_glass

      Pack-added stonecutting recipe.

How does Hephaestus Forge work with other mods?

      4 parts

The quest book in this pack does not cover Hephaestus Forge, so its links to other mods show up in recipes instead. In practice, the casting table and casting basin turn molten metals and gems into items from many other mods, and the pack adds a few recipes of its own on top.[2]

      Casting other mods' materials

The pattern is consistent across the mod recipes in the list below: 90 units of a molten material make one ingot or gem on a casting table, 10 units make a nugget, and 810 units make a block in a casting basin.[2]

      Recipes the pack changed

Three casting recipes from other mods are marked as changed by the pack: the Advanced Alloy ingot cast from Molten Advanced Alloy, and the Block of Enderium and Enderium Gear casts from Molten Enderium. All three produce FTB Industrial Contraptions items. Check the recipe viewer for the exact in-pack amounts rather than assuming the mod defaults.[2]

      Recipes the pack adds

The pack also adds its own recipes that use Hephaestus fluids. Casting Molten Gold on the table makes Hephaestus Tools parts: 180 units for an Adze Head, and 720 units each for a Broad Axe Head and a Hammer Head. Molten Netherite (10 units) casts into an Netherite Nugget, and Molten Steel (90 units) casts into a Steel Plate.[2]

      Destruction CoreAdded by the pack

      Casting Table (hephaestus)

      Recipe id: ftb:justhammers/destructor_core

The Destruction Core from just-hammers is cast from molten diamond on a casting table.

Diamond Destructor HammerAdded by the pack

      Casting Table (hephaestus)

      Recipe id: ftb:justhammers/diamond_destructor_hammer

The finished Diamond Destructor Hammer is cast from molten diamond too, using 2,430 units.

The pack adds melting recipes that turn Molten Blaze into other fluids. 50 units of molten blaze make 90 units of ftb:molten_adamantite for an ingot-sized recipe, 10 units for a nugget-sized one and 810 units for a block-sized one. The same 50 units also make 90 units of Molten Awakened Supremium or 90 units of Molten Insanium, which links to Mystical Agradditions.[2]

      Clear glass and Connected Glass

A pack script adds Clear Glass to the same glass block tag as the clear and borderless glass from Connected Glass, so those blocks are grouped together for tag-based checks.[5]
