What is Hephaestus Forge?

Hephaestus Forge is part of the pack's mod list, and this guide covers version 1.0.15 as it ships in the pack.[1]

It has been in the pack since version 1.0.2 or earlier, so it isn't a recent addition.[1]

How do you get started with Hephaestus Forge?

3 parts

Welcome to Hephaestus Forge in this pack! The mod melts things down into molten metal and pours it back out as something useful. Here is an order for your first crafts, with the real in-pack recipes shown below.[2]

Make your casts

Casts are the moulds you pour molten metal into. Start with the Blank Cast. It is poured at a casting table from 90 mB of Molten Copper, and the pack added this recipe itself.[2]

Pack-added recipe, poured at a casting table.

The other casts are also poured at a casting table from 90 of molten copper each: the Ingot Cast, Nugget Cast, Gem Cast, Plate Cast, Gear Cast and Rod Cast.[2]

The other casts follow the same pattern.

Try your first alloys

Alloy recipes combine molten metals into a new one. Molten Brass and Molten Bronze both start from molten copper: brass pairs it with Molten Zinc, and bronze pairs it with Molten Tin.[2]

    How does Hephaestus Forge work?

    5 parts

Hephaestus Forge is built around melting things into molten fluids, mixing those fluids into alloys and casting them into solid items. The sources for this pack show the pieces below. They do not spell out every number, so I only cover what is confirmed.[2][3]

    The blocks you work with

The mod adds a family of seared machine blocks. For melting there is the Seared Melter, the Seared Heater and the Smeltery Controller. For casting there is the Seared Casting Basin and the Seared Casting Table. For storage and plumbing there are the Seared Casting Tank, Seared Fuel Tank, Seared Ingot Tank, Seared Fuel Gauge, Seared Ingot Gauge, Seared Channel, Seared Faucet, Seared Drain, Seared Duct and Seared Chute.[3]

The mod's own screen text tells you a lot about how these behave. Here is what you will actually see in game:[3]

    • Melting screens can warn you with "No Fuel" or "No Fuel Tank", so melting needs both a fuel supply and a fuel tank.[3]
    • A smeltery that is not fully built shows "The Smeltery is incomplete!", so the smeltery is a structure you have to finish before it works.[3]
    • Temperatures are shown in °C and fluids in mB. Tanks show a Capacity and a Free readout in mB.[3]
    • Tank buckets have an Auto Fill/Drain option.[3]
    • If you use Jade, it can show Melter Melting Progress and Smeltery Melting Progress.[3]
    • There is an Entity Melting category in the recipe screens, which lists how many hearts per hit are used.[3]

    Melting

Melting is by far the biggest group of recipes. The pack's recipe dump counts 335 melting recipes that take a vanilla (minecraft) ingredient and 254 that take Molten Blaze instead. Between them they make dozens of different molten fluids, such as Molten Steel, Molten Gold and Molten Netherite.[2]

10× Molten NetheriteAdded by the pack

    Melting (hephaestus)

    Recipe id: ftb:hephaestus_materials/melting/netherite/nugget

Also added by the pack: Molten Blaze melts into Molten Netherite, 10 mB here.

    Alloying

Alloying mixes molten metals into new ones. The dump counts 8 alloy recipes in total, and the smeltery alloying recipe ids show where they belong. Brass, bronze and constantan are the mod's own alloys.[2]

    Alloy (hephaestus)

    Recipe id: hephaestus:smeltery/alloying/brass

Makes 180 mB of Molten Brass.

    Alloy (hephaestus)

    Recipe id: hephaestus:smeltery/alloying/bronze

Makes 360 mB of Molten Bronze.

    Alloy (hephaestus)

    Recipe id: hephaestus:smeltery/alloying/constantan

Makes 180 mB of Molten Constantan.

288× Molten ObsidianAdded by the pack

    Alloy (hephaestus)

    Recipe id: hephaestus:smeltery/alloying/obsidian

Added by the pack: this one makes 288 mB of Molten Obsidian from fluids.

    Casting

Molten fluid becomes a solid item through casting. The recipe types are casting table and casting basin, matching the Seared Casting Table and Seared Casting Basin blocks. The dump counts 10 casting table recipes. The recipe screens also label a cast as either "Cast Consumed" or "Cast Reusable", so check that label before you pour.[2][3]

The three casts below all start from molten copper at 90 mB. The mod provides the Gear Cast and Gem Cast recipes, and the pack adds its own recipe for the Blank Cast.[2]

    Blank CastAdded by the pack

    Casting Table (hephaestus)

    Recipe id: hephaestus:smeltery/casting/casts/blank_cast

    What the pack changes

The pack removes the mod's own crafting recipe for Clear Glass and adds a stonecutting recipe in its place. The glass is also added to the chisel glass block tag.[2][4][5]

    Clear GlassAdded by the pack

    Stonecutting

      Recipe id: ftb:glass/stonecutting/hephaestus_clear_glass

The pack's stonecutting route to Clear Glass.

Watch out: Hephaestus shows a "Critical Mod Conflict" screen and asks you to close the game if both 'alltheores' and 'ftbmaterials' are installed, because the two cause duplication. If you add mods to the pack, keep that in mind.[3]

Unverified How the smeltery structure is built (its size and which blocks go where), the fuel values, the temperatures and any automation rules are not shown by the sources here. No in-jar guidebook was found for this mod and the pack has no config files for it.

How do you progress through Hephaestus Forge?

      7 parts

Hephaestus Forge in this pack is a recipe-driven path: you work up from seared stone, through copper casts, to alloys and finally to the rare metals. The stages below follow the in-pack recipes, and I flag every place where the pack added or changed something.[2]

      Seared stone and forge bricks

The foundation is Seared Stone. The mod's smelting recipes for Seared Stone, Cracked Seared Bricks, Seared Creeper and Seared Paver are all still there. On top of that, the pack adds a casting basin recipe that makes seared stone from Molten Seared Stone.[2]

      Seared StoneAdded by the pack

      Casting Basin (hephaestus)

      Recipe id: hephaestus:smeltery/casting/basin/misc/seared_stone

Pack-added casting basin recipe for seared stone.

      Forge BrickAdded by the pack

      Casting Table (hephaestus)

      Recipe id: hephaestus:smeltery/casting/table/misc/forge_brick

The pack also adds this casting table recipe for the forge brick.

Seared blocks also come in decorative shapes. The crafting recipes cover slabs, stairs and walls for seared bricks, seared cobblestone, cracked seared bricks and seared creeper, plus a fancy seared brick slab.[2]

      Casts

Next you need casts. The Blank Cast recipe is added by the pack. The Ingot Cast, Nugget Cast, Gem Cast, Gear Cast, Plate Cast and Rod Cast recipes are the mod's own, all made on a casting table.[2]

      Blank CastAdded by the pack

      Casting Table (hephaestus)

      Recipe id: hephaestus:smeltery/casting/casts/blank_cast

      Pack-added casting table recipe.

      Ingot CastMod recipe

      Casting Table (hephaestus)

      Recipe id: hephaestus:smeltery/casting/casts/ingot_cast

One of the mod's own cast recipes.

      Basic alloys

Once you can melt metal, the alloy recipes open up. These are the mod's own recipes and the pack leaves them as they are:[2]

      Alloy (hephaestus)

      Recipe id: hephaestus:smeltery/alloying/brass

Brass as an example of an unchanged mod alloy.

      Pack-tuned alloys

This is where the pack departs from the mod. The steel alloy is changed by the pack, so do not rely on a default recipe from elsewhere. Obsidian and enderium alloys are added by the pack.[2]

90× Molten SteelChanged by the pack

      Alloy (hephaestus)

      Recipe id: hephaestus:smeltery/alloying/steel

Changed by the pack: it makes 90 Molten Steel.

288× Molten ObsidianAdded by the pack

      Alloy (hephaestus)

      Recipe id: hephaestus:smeltery/alloying/obsidian

      Pack-added: makes 288 Molten Obsidian.

180× Molten EnderiumAdded by the pack

      Alloy (hephaestus)

      Recipe id: hephaestus:smeltery/alloying/enderium

      Pack-added: makes 180 Molten Enderium.

Molten Netherite has a mod alloy recipe that makes 360 per batch. The pack also adds melting recipes that produce it from Molten Blaze, covered below.[2]

      Alloy (hephaestus)

      Recipe id: hephaestus:smeltery/alloying/netherite

The mod's netherite alloy, unchanged by the pack.

      Cobalt

Cobalt is cast rather than alloyed. A casting table turns Molten Cobalt into a Cobalt Ingot or a Cobalt Nugget, and a casting basin makes a Block of Cobalt. All of these are mod recipes.[2]

      Block of CobaltMod recipe

      Casting Basin (hephaestus)

      Recipe id: hephaestus:smeltery/casting/basin/metal/cobalt/block_cast

Casting basin recipe for the cobalt block.

      Late game: Molten Blaze melting

The pack adds a large set of melting recipes. Netherite parts and the diamond, emerald and iridium ore melting recipes use Molten Blaze as their only mod input. In the dump, 254 melting recipes use it and they make 19 different results. Gold and iridium tool parts that are written out use lava instead.[2]

10× Molten NetheriteAdded by the pack

      Melting (hephaestus)

      Recipe id: ftb:hephaestus_materials/melting/netherite/nugget

      Pack-added: makes 10 Molten Netherite.

90× Molten DiamondAdded by the pack

      Melting (hephaestus)

      Recipe id: ftb:unification/hephaestus/smeltery/melting/ore/diamond

      Pack-added: makes 90 Molten Diamond.

      Clear glass

Clear Glass is made by a stonecutting recipe the pack adds. Clear Stained Glass and Tinted Clear Glass come from the mod's own shaped crafting recipes.[2]

      Stonecutting

        Recipe id: ftb:glass/stonecutting/hephaestus_clear_glass

        Pack-added stonecutting recipe.

How does Hephaestus Forge work with other mods?

        8 parts

The smeltery side of Hephaestus Forge is where this pack hooks the mod into the rest of the mod list. The recipe dump shows a lot of recipes that take Hephaestus molten fluids and turn them into items from other mods: 73 table-casting recipes for FTB Materials, 15 basin recipes for FTB Materials, 15 table recipes for FTB Armory, 24 for Just Hammers and 300 for Hephaestus Tools.[2]

        FTB Materials metals

You can cast FTB Materials metals straight from their molten fluids. Aluminum, brass, bronze, constantan, electrum, invar, iridium, lead and nickel all have a casting basin recipe for their storage block. Aluminum also has table recipes for the ingot, nugget, plate, gear and rod. Brass has table recipes for the ingot, nugget and plate, and the pack added those three itself.[2]
