Applied Energistics 2 is a mod in FTB Evolution 2 1.4.0, where it is version 26.1.13-beta. AE2: A popular automation and storage mod (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

Stuck? Why it might not be working

  • AE2 autocrafting: the job sits on Scheduled and never crafts
Scheduled means patterns the CPU has queued but not yet pushed to a machine; Crafting means outputs already pushed and still awaited. A job frozen on Scheduled is a push that keeps failing, or an output that never came back, and AE2 shows no message for either. It retries forever, so waiting will not fix it unless the cause was a power or channel dip that has since come back.

What is Applied Energistics 2?

2 parts

Applied Energistics 2 is a storage and automation mod. Instead of filling a room with chests, you build a compact ME network, where items are stored digitally inside connected devices. ME stands for Matter Energy, and the mod is meant to work with other mods in a pack, so you can automate and move items around your base.[1][2][3]

Autocrafting is one of its main functions. You set up patterns, and the system can craft on demand, including whole chains of prerequisites. It can also keep chosen amounts of items in stock, crafting more as needed.[1][3][4]

What else it adds

  • Networking with channels, which limit how many devices can connect to a single cable, so your builds need some planning.[1]
  • Spatial storage, which lets you store a whole region of space, including its blocks, items and entities, and release it later.[1]
  • New materials such as Certus Quartz and Fluix Crystals, plus Inscribers for making components.[1]

Your first step is to find a meteorite. Mining the Mysterious Cube at its center gives you all 4 inscriber presses, and you will also find certus quartz there.[2]

In this pack

The pack ships Applied Energistics 2 version 26.1.13-beta, and it has been included since FTB Evolution 2 1.0.2 or earlier.[5]

There is also an add-on, AE2 Import Export Card, with import, export and block picker cards. The import and export cards move items between your inventory and your ME system. The block picker card extracts the block you are looking at from your network.[6]

Unverified Which quest chapter and group, if any, the pack's quest book uses for AE2, what comes before and after it, and whether the ATM Star path uses it are not shown in the sources here. Check the pack's quest book for that.

How do you get started with Applied Energistics 2?

6 parts

Applied Energistics 2 (AE2) starts out in the world, not at the crafting table. Your first job is to find a meteorite, because that is where your early materials come from. After that the order is simple: get charged certus, grow more certus, then make processors and a first storage network.[2]

Step 1: Raid a meteorite

Meteorites are fairly common and leave massive holes in the terrain, so you may have already stumbled on one. If not, you can craft a Meteorite Compass, which points toward the nearest one. Mine into the center and you will find certus quartz clusters, certus quartz buds, budding certus blocks of various types, and a Mysterious Cube.[2][7]

Take the clusters and any certus quartz blocks. Budding certus blocks can be picked up too, but without Silk Touch they degrade by 1 tier. Break the Mysterious Cube to get all 4 inscriber presses. In this pack worldGen.spawnPressesInMeteorites is set to true.[2][8]

Watch out: Do not break any flawless budding certus. Even with Silk Touch it degrades to flawed budding certus, and it is impossible to repair it back to flawless.[2]

Step 2: Get a Charger and make charged certus

The Charger is required to produce Charged Certus Quartz Crystal, which you need for repairing budding blocks and for making Fluix. Attaching a Wooden Crank to a charger lets you power it by hand. The charge rate in this pack is 1 in battery.chargerChargeRate, the same as the mod default.[2][8][9]

Charger (ae2)

    Recipe id: ae2:charger/charged_certus_quartz_crystal

Charged certus is made in the Charger.

    Step 3: Build growth accelerators

Certus quartz buds sprout from budding certus blocks and grow very slowly on their own. A Growth Accelerator placed adjacent to the budding block massively speeds this up, so build a few of these as your first priority. If you cannot afford an Energy Acceptor or Vibration Chamber yet, put a Wooden Crank on the end of the accelerator.[2][7]

In this pack crafting.growthAccelerator is 10 ticks between accelerator ticks, which is the mod default. Breaking a bud that has not finished growing drops one Certus Quartz Dust. A fully grown cluster drops four Certus Quartz Crystal, and Fortune increases that.[2][7][8]

Budding blocks come in 4 tiers: Flawless, Flawed, Chipped and Damaged. Each time a bud grows another stage, the budding block can degrade by one tier. You can repair them by throwing the budding block (or a certus quartz block) into water together with charged certus.[2]

    Step 4: Fluix

You will also need Fluix, which you already met when making growth accelerators. You make it by throwing charged certus, redstone and nether quartz into water. The result is Fluix Crystal.[2]

    Step 5: Inscribe processors

The four presses from the Mysterious Cube are used in the Inscriber to make the three types of processor. Make a few of each before moving on. The inscriber is a sided machine like a vanilla furnace: the top and bottom inputs fill the top and bottom slots, and the side and back inputs fill the center slot. Results come out of the side or back, and you can rotate the inscriber with a Certus Quartz Wrench to help hopper automation.[2][7]

    Inscriber (ae2)

The Calculation Processor is made in the Inscriber.

If you want another press, there is an inscriber recipe for the Inscriber Calculation Press too. Extended AE adds a crystal assembler recipe that makes 4 Calculation Processor per craft, which is handy later.[10]

      Inscriber (ae2)

        Recipe id: ae2:inscriber/calculation_processor_press

Step 6: Your first ME system

ME storage keeps items inside storage cells, and there are 5 tiers of them. A cell has to sit in either an ME Chest or an ME Drive. The ME Chest shows the cell contents like a normal chest, but it is quite limited, so for real use you want an ME network with an ME Drive.[2]

The guide's first build has no autocrafting and no logistics, just simple searchable storage. Use glass, covered or smart cables, but not dense ones. It recommends 4k cells for a good mix of capacity and types. A 4k cell holds 4,096 bytes and 63 types.[2][11]

Keep channels in mind as you lay cables. Standard cables pass up to 8 channels, and this pack leaves general.channels on "DEFAULT".[8][12]

How does Applied Energistics 2 work?

        9 parts

The easiest way to think about Applied Energistics 2 is that your whole network is one big multiblock machine. Cables, devices, power and storage all belong to it, and this section walks through how those parts behave in this pack.[13]

        Networks and channels

A network is a group of devices linked by blocks that can pass channels, like cables or full-block machines and devices. Where a device sits in the world does not matter. All that matters is that it is connected, and which network it is connected to.[14]

Channels are what limit how many devices a cable can serve. Most machines, full-block devices and standard cables pass up to 8 channels. Dense cables carry up to 32. The only other things that can carry 32 are the ME P2P Tunnel and the Quantum Network Bridge.[12]

With a controller, channels route in 3 steps. They take the shortest path through adjacent machines to the nearest normal cable (glass, covered or smart), then the shortest path through that cable to the nearest dense cable, then the shortest path through the dense cable to the ME Controller. If the shortest path is already full, some devices end up without a channel even when other cables are empty.[12][15]

        • Build treelike: dense cables branching out from the controller, regular cables branching out from those, and devices in clusters of 8 or fewer on the regular cables.[12]
        • Keep loops and ambiguous channel paths to a minimum. Colored cables, cable anchors and tunnels let you steer where channels go.[12]
        • Channels have nothing to do with cable color. Color only stops differently colored cables from connecting, and every color connects to fluix (uncolored) cables.[12][14]
        • Each channel costs 1/128 AE/t per node it passes through, so adding a controller to a network with 8 devices and over 96 nodes can actually lower power use, because channel allocation changes.[12]
Watch out: A network without a controller is ad-hoc and supports up to 8 channel-using devices. Go past 8 and those devices shut down. Remove devices or add a controller.[12]
Tip: Smart cables display channel paths and usage, and a Network Tool shows every component on a network. If you see stuff you should not, or miss stuff you should see, you have a connection problem.[12][14]

The pack sets general.channels to DEFAULT. The allowed values are INFINITE, DEFAULT, X2, X3 and X4, and the option changes the channel capacity cables provide. Operators can also run /ae2 channelmode to see the current mode, or add a mode to change it. All existing grids reboot when the mode changes.[8][16]

        Energy

Networks have a shared pool of energy. Devices pull from it, and Vibration Chambers, Energy Acceptors and controllers add to it. There are no transfer rate limits: devices can pull huge amounts and acceptors can take in energy at functionally unlimited speed, limited only by what the network can store.[13]

AE2 does not use Forge Energy internally. It converts it one-way into its own unit, AE, at 2 FE = 1 AE. The pack keeps powerRatios.forgeEnergy at its default of 0.5. AE2 can make some power itself with Vibration Chambers or the Crystal Resonance Generator, but it is designed to run on power from other tech mods.[8][13]

Watch out: A network cannot take in or use more energy in one game tick than it can store. If a tiny network can only store 800 AE, it can only use or accept 800 AE that tick. Dumping a big inventory into it can run it dry so it reboots. Add energy cells to fix this.[13]

        Charging

Charged Certus Quartz is made in the Charger. The Charger's rate factor is battery.chargerChargeRate, which the pack leaves at 1. You can attach a Wooden Crank to a charger to power it by hand.[8][9]

        Charger (ae2)

          Recipe id: ae2:charger/charged_certus_quartz_crystal

The pack also has other ways to get Charged Certus Quartz Crystal: a recipe from AdvancedAE, plus a charger recipe and an energizer recipe added by the pack for Energized Power.[10]

          Import, export and storage

Network storage is where a network's contents live, usually storage cells or whatever inventory a storage bus points at. Most AE2 devices interact with it, so it helps to know which way each one moves items.[18]

          • Import buses push things into network storage, and export buses pull things out of it.[18]
          • Interfaces do both. They import from their internal inventory if a slot is not set to stock anything (or holds more than the stock amount), and export into it if the slot is set to stock something.[18]
          • Terminals push and pull whenever you insert or take items.[18]
          • Pattern providers import from their internal return slot, so you can push results into them.[18]
          • Drives provide their cells as storage. Storage buses use the inventory they point at as storage, so other devices push to or pull from that inventory.[18]

Storage priority is set with the wrench in the top-right of some GUIs. Incoming items go to the highest priority storage first. On a tie, a storage that already holds the item wins. Items leaving storage are taken from the lowest priority first, so high priority storage fills up and low priority storage empties.[18]

          Bytes and types

Storage cells are limited by bytes and types. Each item costs one bit, so 8 items take 1 byte, and a stack of 64 takes 8 bytes however it would stack outside the network. Fluid cells hold 8 buckets per byte. Each type also costs bytes upfront, and that cost grows with cell size.[11]

Every cell tops out at 63 types. One drive bay full of cells is 630 types. Because of the upfront cost, a 1k cell holds 8,128 items with one type in use but only 4,160 with all 63 types in use, and a 256k cell holds 2,080,768 against 1,064,960. Top-tier cells give you no extra types, so smaller cells stay useful late game.[11]

Tip: Every damaged or uniquely enchanted tool or armor piece is its own type. Filter mob farm drops before they reach your system.[11]

          Autocrafting

An autocrafting setup has 3 things: whatever sends the request, a crafting CPU, and a pattern provider. This is how a request plays out:[4]

          1. Something makes a request. That can be you clicking an autocraftable item in a terminal, or an export bus or interface with a crafting card asking for an item it is set to export or stock.[4]
          2. The system works out the ingredients and prerequisite steps and stores them in the chosen crafting CPU.[4]
          3. The pattern provider with the right pattern pushes the ingredients to any adjacent inventory. For a crafting table recipe that is a molecular assembler. For a processing pattern it is some other machine or setup.[4]
          4. The result must return to the system, through an import bus, an interface, or by pushing it back into a pattern provider. An item entering the system has to actually happen: piping results into a chest with a storage bus on it does not work.[4]
          5. If the craft is a prerequisite for another one, the items wait in the crafting CPU and are used there.[4]

Crafting, smithing and stonecutting patterns are all automated by a pattern provider next to a molecular assembler, and you can mix them in one setup. Assemblers eject results to adjacent inventories on their own. Processing patterns are the flexible kind: they push ingredients out and expect the result back later, which is how you automate almost any modded machine or furnace. A pattern can also use bigger amounts, such as 8 cobblestone for 8 stone, and the provider inserts 8 each operation.[4]

Watch out: The autocrafting algorithm cannot handle recursive recipes, like 1 redstone dust turning into 2. A level emitter with a crafting card can emit redstone to switch on a machine for these, or for farms that need no input.[4]

          Subnetworks and P2P

A subnet is simply a separate network. Use one to limit which devices can reach which storage, or to save channels on the main network. For example, a pattern provider can output to an interface connected to several storage buses on several machines, using 1 channel instead of one provider per machine.[14][19]

          • Full-block devices such as pattern providers pass the network connection through, so a jumble of buses can still be on your main network. A pattern provider can be made directional so it stops passing channels through one side.[14][19]
          • A quantum bridge acts like a wireless dense cable, so both ends are one network. A Quartz Fiber shares energy without providing a network connection.[14][20]
          • One kind of P2P tunnel carries channels. The network the tunnel is mounted on is not the network it carries.[14]
          • In this pack P2P energy tunnels cost 0.025 of the transported energy (powerRatios.p2pTunnelEnergyTax). Other P2P transport costs 0.025 AE per equivalent I/O bus operation (powerRatios.p2pTunnelTransportTax). Both are mod defaults.[8]

          Spatial IO

Spatial IO swaps a defined volume of your world with an identically sized volume in the spatial storage dimension. A spatial storage cell goes in the input slot of the Spatial IO Port, and a redstone pulse triggers the swap. Swap again and what you stored comes back.[21]

          • Everything must be on one network, and you can have only one spatial IO setup per network, so a subnetwork is recommended.[21]
          • The volume is the bounding box of the outside of the pylons, shrunk by 1 block in every direction. The minimum is 3x3x3, which defines a 1x1x1 volume. Every pylon must be in that outer bounding box and on the same network, and each must be at least 2 blocks long.[21]
          • The more of the shell you fill, the more efficient the array. Minimal setups around large volumes are very inefficient and may need billions of AE.[21]
          • Once used, a cell has permanent XYZ dimensions. It cannot be reset, reformatted or resized, and the volume cannot be rotated. If the dimensions do not match the defined volume, the IO port will not operate.[21]
Watch out: Any entity in the defined volume, including you, is carried along. If you have no way out, you are trapped in the spatial storage dimension.[21]

The pack uses the default power curve for spatial operations: spatialio.spatialPowerMultiplier is 1250 and spatialio.spatialPowerExponent is 1.35.[8]

          Certus growth

Certus quartz buds grow from budding certus blocks, which you first find in meteorites. There are 4 tiers: Flawless, Flawed, Chipped and Damaged. Each time a bud grows a stage, the block can degrade one tier, eventually becoming plain certus quartz. Throwing a budding block (or certus quartz block) into water with a Charged Certus Quartz Crystal repairs it. Flawless blocks never degrade, but cannot be crafted or moved with a pickaxe, even with Silk Touch.[22]

Buds grow very slowly alone, so place Growth Accelerators next to the budding block. The pack leaves crafting.growthAccelerator at 10 ticks between accelerator ticks. Each covered side of a budding block slows its cumulative growth, which eventually outweighs adding more accelerators. An unfinished bud drops 1 dust unaffected by fortune, and a full cluster drops 4 crystals, which fortune can increase.[8][22]

The pack has crafting.annihilationPlaneSkyDustGeneration enabled. An annihilation plane placed face up at the maximum world height then generates sky stone passively.[8]

How do you progress through Applied Energistics 2?

          5 parts

Applied Energistics 2 doesn't have a fixed tier ladder in this pack, so this page walks you through the order the in-pack recipes naturally take you: charged crystals, processors, a certus supply, then upgrades and tools.[10]

Unverified The sources here show no quest chapter for this mod, so I can't tell you where the pack's quest book places it or what it unlocks. Check the quest book in game for any guidance.

          Stage 1: Certus and charging

Everything starts with Certus Quartz Crystal. Besides finding it, the pack adds a casting route in Hephaestus Forge: 90 units of Molten Certus Quartz in a casting table give you one crystal. The same applies to Fluix Crystal, which uses 90 units of Molten Fluix.[10]

Next you want Charged Certus Quartz Crystal. The standard route is the AE2 charger. The pack also adds charging and energizing recipes in Energized Power, and AdvancedAE has its own recipe for it.[10][23]

          Charger (ae2)

            Recipe id: ae2:charger/charged_certus_quartz_crystal

The charger recipe for the charged crystal.

The charger also handles the Guide and the Meteorite Compass, and the pack adds matching Energized Power recipes for both. Charge the guide early, because it explains AE2's parts in game.[10]

Stage 2: Dusts from your machines

The pack adds machine recipes in several of its other mods for Ender Dust, Sky Stone Dust and Certus Quartz Dust. The mods involved include Energized Power, FTB Industrial Contraptions, Horse Powered, LTX Industries, Oritech, Occultism and Ender IO. The existing Ender IO Ender Dust milling recipe is changed by the pack, shown below.[10]

              Recipe id: enderio:sag_milling/ender_pearl

XyCraft Machines extractor recipes for Certus Quartz Dust are also changed by the pack, so don't assume the vanilla AE2 behaviour for those.[10]

              Stage 3: Processors

The processors are the real gate in AE2. The AE2 inscriber makes the Calculation Processor, the Inscriber Calculation Press and the printed circuits. The Calculation Press also has a Mystical Agriculture recipe.[10]

                Recipe id: ae2:inscriber/calculation_processor

If you have Extended AE, it gives you a faster route using its circuit cutter and crystal assembler. The cutter makes Printed Calculation Circuit, Printed Engineering Circuit and Printed Logic Circuit, and the assembler makes Calculation Processor, Engineering Processor and Fluix Crystal. Two of those recipes are shown below.[10]

The Extended AE crystal assembler recipe for engineering processors.

Stage 4: Budding quartz and a certus farm

Budding quartz degrades in stages: Flawless Budding Certus Quartz, Flawed Budding Certus Quartz, Chipped Budding Certus Quartz, then Damaged Budding Certus Quartz. Extended AE's crystal fixer can move a block back up this chain, one step per recipe.[10]

Breaking a chipped budding block with Silk Touch drops the block itself. Without Silk Touch it drops a damaged one.[24]

For automation, AE2's in-game guide has an Advanced Certus Farm. It's a complex build that lives inside your ME system. Annihilation planes break the clusters and the depleted block, and a formation plane places a new budding block. An interface with a Crafting Card requests replacement blocks from autocrafting.[25]

Stage 5: Cards, tools and storage

The Capacity Card adds filter slots to import, export and storage buses, and to formation planes. The Equal Distribution Card splits a cell evenly between the items you've partitioned, and this matters when you pair it with an overflow destruction card.[10][26]

For crafting capacity, the crafting storage blocks come in 1k, 4k, 16k, 64k and 256k sizes, alongside the crafting accelerator.[28][29][30][31][32][33]

How does Applied Energistics 2 work with other mods?

                    5 parts

AE2 touches a handful of other mods in this pack. The connections below come from in-pack recipes and a few AE2 data tags that name items from other mods.[10]

                    Applied Flux: portable FE cells

Applied Flux brings FE storage into your ME setup. The pack has a disassembly recipe for each portable FE cell size, from 1k up to 256M, and they all use AE2's storage cell disassembly recipe type. The sizes run from the 1k ME Energy Storage Component up to the 256M ME Energy Storage Component, and every size shares the ME FE Cell Housing. These are the mod's own recipes, not pack changes.[10]

FTB Armory: bigger item cell components

FTB Armory adds bigger storage components for AE2 item cells: 1M Adamantite ME Storage Component (1M), 4M Aeternium ME Storage Component (4M) and 16M Aurichalcum ME Storage Component (16M). Each has a disassembly recipe, shown below, that works on the ME Item Cell Housing kind of cell.[10]

                    Hephaestus Forge: casting AE2 crystals

The pack itself adds two casting table recipes from Hephaestus Forge that turn molten metal into AE2 crystals. 90 units of ftb:molten_certus_quartz cast into a Certus Quartz Crystal, and 90 units of ftb:molten_fluix cast into a Fluix Crystal.[10]

Certus Quartz CrystalAdded by the pack

                    Casting Table (hephaestus)

                    Productive Bees: fluix bees

Productive Bees has two recipes that involve AE2 materials: a bee conversion recipe for the fluix bee and a centrifuge recipe for fluix honeycomb. Both are the mod's own recipes, not pack changes, and both are shown below.[10]

                    FluixMod recipe

                    Bee Conversion (productivebees)

                    Recipe id: productivebees:bee_conversion/appliedenergistics2/fluix_bee

Fluix bee conversion, driven by the Fluix Pearl.

                    Centrifuge (productivebees)

                      Recipe id: productivebees:centrifuge/ae2/honeycomb_fluix

Fluix honeycomb centrifuge, which includes Fluix Dust and Wax among its outputs.

Extended AE and AdvancedAE in AE2's tags

AE2's growth_acceleratable block tag lists the Entro budding blocks from Extended AE: fully, mostly, half and hardly.[34]

AE2's exported_settings data component tag includes the allowed_output_sides setting from AdvancedAE.[35]

Which Applied Energistics 2 config options matter?

                      8 parts

Everything here lives in one file, config/ae2-common.toml. The useful thing to know up front: wherever the pack's file records a mod default next to a value, the pack's value is identical to it. For the options below, I'll tell you what the pack uses so you know what to expect before you start tweaking.[8]

                      Channels

general.channels is set to "DEFAULT" in this pack. The allowed values are INFINITE, DEFAULT, X2, X3 and X4, and the option changes the channel capacity that cables provide. If channel limits ever annoy you, this is the one to look at.[8]

                      Power

                      Vibration chamber

The vibration chamber uses the mod's numbers. vibrationChamber.baseEnergyPerFuelTick is 5 AE energy per fuel burn tick. vibrationChamber.baseMaxEnergyPerGameTick is 40 AE/t at most, and vibrationChamber.minEnergyPerGameTick is 4 AE/t at the slowest.[8]

For reference, the config notes that coal burns for 1,600 ticks, a block of coal for 16,000 and a lava bucket for 20,000, which is what the per-tick energy figure is multiplied by.[8]

                      Wireless

                      Portable batteries

Every battery capacity below is the mod default, and the charger speed is normal.[8]

                      World and block behaviour

                      Spatial storage cost

Spatial IO power use is controlled by spatialio.spatialPowerMultiplier at 1,250 and spatialio.spatialPowerExponent at 1.35. Both are the mod default.[8]

                      Debug options

general.unsupportedDeveloperTools and the logging options (logging.debugLog, logging.craftingLog, logging.gridLog, logging.blockUpdateLog and logging.chunkLoggerTrace) are all false. Leave them that way unless you are chasing a problem.[8]

What changed in Applied Energistics 2 between versions?

                      3 parts

FTB Evolution 2 1.1.0 ships Applied Energistics 2 26.1.13-beta. The pack's mod list shows it was first included in FTB Evolution 2 1.0.2 or earlier. Here are the notable changes listed in the changelog for that mod release.[5][36]

                      New and changed features

                      • Automatic pattern restock was added.[36]
                      • The ME IO Port now accepts only storage cells as input.[36]
                      • The CPU selection list on the crafting status screen now shows a suspend icon.[36]
                      • The crafting CPU list now refreshes once per second instead of every tick.[36]
                      • Pick Block in the GUI now supports both mouse button and keyboard bindings.[36]

                      Bug fixes

                      • Crafting CPUs could act as if they had infinite Co-Processors for a tick. This is fixed.[36]
                      • Items moved out of a crafting grid are now considered for the new recipe.[36]
                      • Spatial transitions now work when pylons and I/O ports are in different dimensions.[36]
                      • Tooltips no longer crash for extremely large byte amounts.[36]
                      • Changes in the Condenser's internal power level no longer cause neighbor updates.[36]
                      • Bottom face rendering of partial faces (crafting CPU, cables, QN Bridge) was fixed, and so was fluid rendering in recipes in JEI.[36]

                      Text and under the hood

Various English texts were improved (Guide, GUI and an advancement name), the "example Main Network" guidebook entry was updated for cabling, and translations were refreshed. The release also adds benchmark infrastructure for storage code paths and some small storage optimisations, which are aimed at developers rather than at your gameplay.[36]

Unverified The sources here include no pack changelog entries for Applied Energistics 2, so what changed for this mod between individual FTB Evolution 2 releases is not shown. The list above comes from the mod's own changelog.
