What is Just Dire Things?

3 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 11 0.8.0-beta guide

Just Dire Things adds a lot of machines focused on automation, plus goo-based resource upgrades, tiered armor, tools, wands and a handful of utility items. This pack ships version 1.6.11 of the mod.[1][2][3][4][5]

Progression through goo

The backbone of the mod is goo. You place a goo block, feed it a specific resource to activate it, then put an eligible block next to it and it transforms. Each tier converts stronger blocks into new resources, and higher tiers can do everything lower tiers can, only faster.[6]

Tip: After a block is transformed, there is a 10% chance the goo needs reactivating by feeding it another item. While it is inactive it can't start new transformations, but anything already in progress still finishes.[6]

Armor and tools

Each resource tier has a matching armor set, and armor and tools both accept upgrades. You craft the upgrade item, then combine it with your gear in a smithing table. Smithing-table upgrades to the next tier keep your installed upgrades.[11][12]

The power requirements climb with the tiers. Blazegold gear repairs itself when you drop it into a lava source block. Celestigem armor stores 10,000 FE, and Eclipse Alloy armor stores 500,000 FE. A Pocket Generator is the recommended way to keep the powered pieces charged, and it accepts coal or the upgraded coals from this mod.[13][14][15][16]

The mod also adds utility tools such as the Ferricore Wrench for rotating blocks and linking Swappers, the Creature Catcher for capturing and releasing entities, and the Machine Settings Copier for copying settings between machines. Wands include the Blazejet Wand, which has a built-in air burst, and the Polymorphic Wand, which randomly changes mobs from one form to another.[17][18][19][20][21]

Where it fits

The goo chain makes this a good mid-to-late-game path for upgrading gear. The tiers follow the iron, gold, diamond and netherite ladder, and you can work through them at your own pace.[7][8][9][10]

Unverified The sources do not confirm any place for this mod on the ATM Star path or any quests that involve it, so don't count on either.

How do you get started with Just Dire Things?

4 parts

Just Dire Things is built around goo: you place a goo block, feed it, and it turns nearby blocks into new materials. Tools and armor come in a set for each resource tier, so the goo chain is where you start.[22][23][24][25]

Make Primogel Goo and get Ferricore

Craft a Primogel Goo from simple Overworld materials. It is the first tier of goo and turns Iron into Ferricore. To use it, place the goo in the world, feed it the resource it asks for (the goo block tells you which), then put an eligible block next to it.[22][26][27]

After each transformation there is a 10% chance the goo needs feeding again. While it is inactive it cannot start new transformations, but anything already in progress still finishes.[22]

In this pack the goo turns an iron block into Raw Ferricore Ore. The Ferricore Ingot has both a smelting and a blasting recipe.[28]

    A blasting recipe also exists.

The pack also adds a Hephaestus Forge casting table recipe that makes a Ferricore ingot from molten Ferricore, if you already have the fluid.[28]

Step up to Blazebloom Goo and Blazegold

Blazebloom Goo turns Gold into Blazegold. Higher tier goo can always do everything a lower tier can, and does it much faster. Its recipe is a goo spread recipe, which accepts any block from a Just Dyna Things tag.[22][28][29]

      Upgrade your gear

You move up a tier in a smithing table with the upgrade templates, and installed upgrades are kept when you do. The Blazegold Helmet is a good first piece: it protects better than its Ferricore version and has Lava Repair, so dropping it in a lava source block fully repairs it.[24][25][30]

Upgrades are separate items that you combine with your tool or armor in a smithing table. Hold shift to see which upgrades a piece accepts. Shift-click the item in your hand to open its settings, where you can toggle each upgrade and assign hotkeys. Active abilities such as invulnerability need a hotkey.[24][25][31]

This pack adds its own fabricating recipes from FTB Evolution 2 Companion for Upgrade: Flight, Upgrade: Death Protection, Upgrade: Invulnerability and Upgrade: Phase.[28]

          Start on the coal line

Goo also upgrades coal, tier by tier: a coal block becomes Raw Primal Coal, then a Primal Coal Block becomes Raw Blaze Ember, and so on up the chain. Higher tier fuels burn hotter and longer in the Pocket Generator.[28][32]

The pack changed the charcoal version of this recipe: it takes a Block of Charcoal from FTB Materials and gives Raw Primal Coal.[28]

Tip: Most machines come in a simple and an advanced version. Simple ones need no power but only affect the block or entity right in front of them. Advanced ones need power, cover a larger area and have filters. Start with the simple ones.[33]

How does Just Dire Things work?

          6 parts

Most of Just Dire Things is built around one idea: a machine comes in a simple and an advanced version. Once you understand that split, plus how goo, fuel and fluids feed into it, the rest of the mod falls into place.[33][34]

          Simple vs advanced machines

Simple machines do not need power. They generally only affect the block or entity directly in front of them, and you control how fast they run with the Speed(ticks) button. The Simple Block Breaker is a good example.[33][35]

Advanced machines are much more powerful but need power to run. They usually cover a large area that you set in the UI, they have filters, and they automatically charge any Forge Energy items you place in them.[33]

          • Area: click 'Render area' to see in the world what the block will affect. RAD changes the radius, and OFF moves the centre of the area by changing the block offset.[36]
          • Filters: most advanced machines have a row of filter slots for items, blocks or entities. Drag from JEI or click a slot with a stack in your hand. For entities, use a spawn egg or a Creature Catcher.[36]
          • Allow vs deny: in allow mode only the listed things are affected, in deny mode everything except them is. 'Compare NBT' makes the filter stricter, for example to match one sheep colour.[36]
          • The Advanced Dropper is the exception: you cannot change its radius, only its offset. Its filter slots also set the order items are dropped in.[37]

Once you have a machine set up the way you like, the Machine Settings Copier saves you redoing it. Shift-right click a machine to copy its settings, then right click another machine to paste them.[38]

Tip: In this pack, a thrown Creature Catcher is cancelled when it hits an entity carrying one of the echoshop broker tags (early, mid or late). Don't plan to catch those with it.[39]

          Power

The Simple Coal Generator burns any furnace fuel, but the mod's own coals do better. Primal Coal, Blaze Ember, Voidflame Coal and Eclipse Ember each raise both the FE per tick and the total FE generated. The Simple Fuel Generator does the same job with refined fuels, which come in 3 tiers.[40][41]

The Pocket Generator is the portable option. Open its UI and insert coal or the mod's upgraded coals. Higher tier fuels give more Forge Energy per tick. A Fuel Canister can feed it too.[32]

The Fuel Canister stores any fuel except lava buckets, and you can put it into furnaces and generators so a whole piece of coal isn't wasted on one ore. There is no way to get the items back out. Inserting this mod's fuels also transfers their fuel multiplier, averaged with what is already inside.[42]

Solar panels are the passive route. The in-game guide lists the default max FE rate as 240 for the Ferricore panel, 960 for Blazegold, 3,840 for Celestigem and 11,520 for Eclipse Alloy. Each has its own default conditions, such as dimension, seeing the sky or daytime. The Thermo Generator makes Forge Energy from a heat source block and a fluid coolant.[43][44]

Unverified The guide says the solar panel values and conditions can all be changed in configs. The sources here include no config file for this mod, so the pack's actual rates are not shown. Treat the numbers above as the mod's listed defaults.

To move power around, the Energy Transmitter fills an internal buffer from a generator, then pushes Forge Energy wirelessly into any receiving block inside its area. This wireless transfer loses a small, configurable amount of energy. Transmitters in range of each other balance themselves automatically with no loss, and filter slots let you pick which machines receive power.[45]

          Goo

Goo converts blocks placed next to it into new resources. Higher tier goo can do everything lower tiers can, and works much faster.[22]

          1. Craft a goo block and place it in the world.[22]
          2. Activate it by feeding it the resource it consumes, which the goo block indicates.[22]
          3. Place an eligible block next to the activated goo to start the transformation.[22]

After each transformation there is a 10% chance the goo needs reactivating with another item. While inactive it can't start new transformations, but ones already running finish. A Stabilizer revives any goo on top of it using Forge Energy.[22][46]

Each tier has its own target: Primogel turns Iron into Ferricore, Blazebloom turns Gold into Blazegold, VoidShimmer turns Diamonds into Celestigem, and Shadowpulse turns Netherite into Eclipse Alloy. For instance, a gold block next to the right goo becomes Raw Blazegold Ore, and a diamond block becomes Raw Celestigem Ore.[26][28][29][47][48]

The pack changed one goo recipe. Raw Primal Coal now comes from a Block of Charcoal.[28]

          Fluids

Some fluids are made without a machine, using fluid drop recipes. In this pack's recipes, water becomes Polymorphic Fluid, and Polymorphic Fluid can in turn become Time Fluid or Unrefined Blaze Ember Fuel.[28]

          Fluiddrop (justdirethings)

          Recipe id: justdirethings:polymorphic_fluid_block-fluiddrop

The Paradox Mixer mass-crafts fluid drop recipes, but it needs at least one energized Stabilizer.[46][49]

For handling fluids, the Fluid Canister holds up to 8 buckets. Shift right-click it to set auto-filling of other fluid containers to None, Just Dire Things items only, or ALL.[50]

          • The Simple Fluid Collector grabs any fluid in front of it into an internal buffer that holds only 1 fluid at a time. The Advanced version covers a larger area, and you filter it by placing a bucket of the fluid in the filter slots.[51][52]
          • The Simple Fluid Placer places a fluid only when it has more than 1,000 mb and nothing is in front of it. The Advanced version covers a larger area and uses filters to choose which blocks to place on.[53][54]
          • The Experience Holder is also a fluid tank. It converts experience to XP Fluid at 20mb per experience point, and you can extract it with a bucket, the Fluid Canister or pipes.[55]

          Items, blocks and entities

          • Block Breaker: needs a tool to work, and damages the tool (or consumes power) whenever it breaks a block. The Advanced version can filter by block or by item drop.[35][56]
          • Block Placer: places the block held in its inventory in front of it when powered. Its direction button sets the placing direction, and the Advanced filter sets which blocks it can place on.[57][58]
          • Clicker: simulates right click, left click or hold click, and can target blocks, air, hostile, passive, adult, child, players or all living things. The Advanced version, set to left click hostiles, makes a mob farm.[59][60]
          • Item Collector: works like an advanced machine even though it uses Tier 1 resources. It vacuums item entities in its area into the inventory it is attached to.[61]
          • Swappers: link two with a Ferricore Wrench by right clicking the first, then the second. They swap blocks and/or entities between them, including block entities like chests. The Advanced version adds radius, which is copied to its partner, and filters.[62][63]
          • Inventory Holder: ctrl-click an item inside it to save a slot filter. The 'Filtered Items Only' and 'Compare Stack Sizes' buttons also control how pipes and hoppers insert and extract.[64]
          • Player Accessor: lets hoppers or pipes reach a player's inventory, and you choose which side maps to which slots.[65]

          Time machines

The Time Wand needs both Forge Energy and Time Fluid. Your first right click on a ticking block makes it run twice as fast, then 4x, then 8x and so on, and each step costs both resources. The boost lasts 30 seconds. The Ticker Block speeds up blocks to 16x the normal tick rate.[66][67]

The Paradox Machine takes a snapshot of the blocks (raw ores only) and entities in its area at the moment you click the snapshot button. Later, with a significant amount of power and Time Fluid, it can restore the ones you cleared, though restored entities may not be exactly identical to the originals. Extended use can build up Paradox energy, which the UI tracks.[68]

How do you progress through Just Dire Things?

          5 parts

Progression in Just Dire Things runs on goo. There are four goo tiers, and each one converts a stronger vanilla resource into the next material, which then unlocks the tools, armor and machines for that tier. Think of it as a ladder: Ferricore, Blazegold, Celestigem, then Eclipse Alloy.[26][28][29][47][48]

          The goo ladder

To use goo, craft a goo block and place it, feed it the resource it consumes, then put an eligible block next to it. After each transformation there is a 10% chance the goo needs feeding again, and while it is inactive it cannot start new transformations (ongoing ones still finish). Higher tier goo can do everything a lower tier can, and does it much faster.[22]

Alongside the metals there is a coal line that runs from Primal Coal through Blaze Ember and Voidflame Coal up to Raw Eclipse Ember. The goo conversion recipes below show how the first steps work.[28]

The pack changed the first step. Raw Primal Coal can also be made from a charcoal block from FTB Materials, on top of the regular coal block route.[28]

The fluids follow the same pattern. Polymorphic Fluid is made from water, and the unrefined Blaze Ember fuel comes from it. After that, the unrefined Voidflame and Eclipse Ember fuels each come from the refined fuel of the tier below, and each refined fuel comes from its unrefined version through a goo conversion.[28]

          Tools, armor and upgrades

Every resource tier has its own set of tools and armor, and each set can take upgrades. You install an upgrade by putting the tool or armor and the upgrade item in a smithing table. Upgrade templates move a piece up to the next tier and keep the upgrades already installed.[24][25]

You can see this in the smithing recipes for Blazegold Pickaxe and the bows (Blazegold Bow, Celestigem Bow and Eclipse Alloy Bow). The top tools include the Celestigem Paxel and the Eclipse Alloy Paxel.[28]

                Machines

Most machines come in a simple and an advanced version. Simple ones need no power but generally only affect the block or entity directly in front of them. Advanced ones need power, cover a large area you can configure, have filters, and automatically charge Forge Energy items placed in them. The Simple Block Breaker and Advanced Block Breaker are a good example of the pair.[33][69][70]

How does Just Dire Things work with other mods?

                5 parts

Most of the links between Just Dire Things and the rest of the pack come from one place: the pack's own fabricating recipes. They turn Just Dire Things fluids into items from other mods and from the pack itself. There are also a few ingot casting recipes and one changed goo recipe.[28]

                Fluids as fabricating ingredients

The pack adds a lot of fabricating recipes, and many of the pack's progression items need a Just Dire Things fluid to be made. Here is how they group by fluid.[28]

                Small compatibility touches

The mod's own block tags include an optional entry for Powah! player transmitters in the list of blocks the Eclipse Gate denies, so the mod is built to coexist with Powah!.[72]
