What is FTB Industrial Contraptions?

3 parts

FTB Industrial Contraptions is a tech mod about power generation, ore processing, nuclear engineering and late-game gear. It is built around its own energy grid, which runs on a unit called the zap. This pack ships version 26.1.2.17.[1][2][3]

Its generators and cables can power machines from other mods that consume FE directly, so it plays nicely with the rest of your base.[3]

What is in the mod

  • Materials: it uses FTB Materials for ores, ingots, dusts, plates, rods, gears and wires, and adds alloys, carbon parts, rubber, silicon and a circuit hierarchy.[4]
  • Generators: four renewable generators, one combustion generator and the nuclear reactor cover the whole power curve.[5]
  • Machines: recipe-processing machines with an energy buffer and up to four upgrade slots.[6]
  • Powered armor: sets that spend energy to absorb damage instead of wearing down, with the chestplate holding the energy for the whole set.[7][8]
  • Utilities: teleporters, landmarks, nuclear payloads, spray paint, fluid storage, fuses and scrap boxes.[9]

Voltage tiers

Every cable and block is rated for one of five tiers: LV, MV, HV, EV and IV. Push more into a block than its tier allows and it burns out, so match your cable tier to the highest producer or consumer on the line.[3]

Where to begin

Your first steps are rubber (smelt slime balls for 8 rubber each), copper, and a machine block, which is the shell of every LV machine. From there the mod's own progression runs LV, MV, HV, EV and finally IV and endgame.[10]

Watch out: A failing nuclear reactor explodes when heat reaches 100%. The blast scales with base radius 10 up to a cap of 80 blocks, enough to carve a crater down to bedrock. Plan your layout carefully.[11]

How do you get started with FTB Industrial Contraptions?

7 parts

Welcome to FTB Industrial Contraptions! Your first steps are rubber, a better furnace, your first machine block and then your first power. Here they are in order, with what this pack changes along the way.[10]

Step 1: Rubber

Hunt slimes or build a slime farm, then cook the slime balls to get 8 Rubber each. A handful of slime balls is enough to wire up the whole early game, because rubber goes into nearly every cable and machine in the mod.[10]

8× RubberMod recipe

Smoking

    Recipe id: ftbic:smoking/rubber

Smoker version, 8 Rubber per cook. The campfire recipe gives the same amount.

    Step 2: The Iron Furnace

Before you have electricity, the Iron Furnace is a cheap upgrade over vanilla. One coal smelts 12 items instead of vanilla's 8. The pack leaves this at the mod default, set by machines.iron_furnace_items_per_fuel.[10][13]

Step 3: Machine Block and Electronic Circuit

The Machine Block is the empty shell used in the crafting recipe of every LV-tier machine. The Electronic Circuit is needed for nearly every LV-tier device, so make a few before you start building.[10][14]

    Step 4: First power

Build a Basic Generator, connect it with LV Cable to a Macerator or Powered Furnace, and you are in the energy age. The LV Cable is rubber-coated copper and is the default cable for these three.[10][14][15]

This pack buffs the generator. machines.basic_generator_output is 40 (mod default 10) and machines.basic_generator_capacity is 16,000 (mod default 4,000).[13]

Watch out: The Basic Generator has one fuel slot and does not stop burning when its buffer is full, so connect it to your setup right away to avoid waste. It accepts only certain fuels: coal and charcoal burn for 1,600 ticks, coal blocks for 16,000, and logs and planks for 300. Lava buckets and blaze rods will not go in.[16]

    Cables and voltage

Every cable and block is rated for one of five tiers, and feeding a block more than its tier allows burns it out. The pack raised the transfer rates: LV is 128 (mod default 32), MV is 512 (default 128) and HV is 2,048 (default 512). See energy.lv_transfer_rate, energy.mv_transfer_rate and energy.hv_transfer_rate. Energy travels along a cable chain up to energy.max_cable_length, which is 300 here.[3][13]

Full FE mode is on in this pack, so FTBIC machines accept and emit FE directly on every side and you do not need rectifiers. FE input never burns anything out, but overvoltage coming from FTBIC cables still burns LV and MV machines, battery boxes and transformers.[3][13][17]

Step 5: Get more from your ore

Macerate each supported raw ore into 2 crushed ore, then smelt it for two ingots. Adding an Ore Washer and a Centrifuge takes you to 5 ingots per raw ore, or 15 per ore block. In this pack the aluminum chain uses these two steps.[10][12]

    • MV: solar panels and ore processing chains.[10]
    • HV: advanced machines, Compressor, Extruder, Roller.[10]
    • EV: nuclear reactor, Quantum gear, Teleporter.[10]
    • IV and endgame: Antimatter, Mechanical Elytra, full automation.[10]

How does FTB Industrial Contraptions work?

    8 parts

Every recipe machine in FTB Industrial Contraptions runs on the same framework, so once you understand one you understand most of them. This section covers that framework, how power moves around, how fluids and items get into and out of machines, and the pack's changes to the generators.[6]

    The machine framework

Recipe-processing machines share an inventory, a recipe tick loop, an energy buffer and up to four upgrade slots. Advanced variants have bigger buffers and higher throughput. Utility machines like the Batch Feeder have their own controls.[6]

The pack raised many buffers. The Macerator holds 4,800 (mod default 1,200), and the advanced machines and the Alloy Smelter hold 40,000 (mod default 10,000). Energy use is untouched: 2 for the Macerator, 16 for its advanced version and 48 for the Alloy Smelter.[13]

    Alloy Smelter

The Alloy Smelter is an MV machine with three input slots and one output slot. Each input slot holds one ingredient at any stack size, and recipe counts are matched against the slot's stack count. Put 4 of an ingot in one slot rather than splitting it across two.[19]

The slots also enforce a unique-item rule: once an item type sits in one slot, the other two slots reject it. If your inputs fit several recipes, the smelter picks the one with the most ingredients, so filling all three slots always gets you the 3-input alloy over a 2-input subset. Steel is the gateway to Advanced Alloy.[19]

      Ore refining chain

The Macerator starts the chain: supported ore blocks become 3 raw ore, and each raw ore becomes 2 crushed ore. Smelting that crushed ore gives you two ingots per raw ore. Add an Ore Washer and a Centrifuge and you reach 5 ingots per raw ore, or 15 per ore block.[10][20]

The Centrifuge step turns 3 washed ore into 5 refined concentrate, and you then smelt each concentrate into one ingot. The pack adds the aluminum versions of the washing and centrifuging recipes.[12][21]

      Fluids and item automation

Both centrifuges have a 16,000 mB input tank on the left and a separate 16,000 mB output tank on the right, and each tank holds one fluid at a time. A separating recipe can take one item and one fluid, and can give items, a fluid, or both, with at most one fluid result. The regular Centrifuge has two item output slots and the Advanced Centrifuge has three.[21]

Move fluid with pipes, or use a bucket or Fluid Cell on the machine. On the fluid tab of the I/O configuration, choose Input, Output or Input/Output for each face. Processing waits until every input is present and every result fits, so a full output tank, or a different fluid already sitting in it, blocks the machine.[21]

The Batch Feeder is the pack's tool for feeding whole ingredient sets into a machine. It needs no power and has nine item buffer slots, a 16,000 mB fluid buffer, three ghost item settings and one ghost fluid setting.[22]

      • Place the feeder with its outlet facing the destination. Click a ghost slot with an ingredient stack on your cursor to copy the item and its count without using up the stack. Each entry is limited to one normal stack, up to 64.[22]
      • For bronze, set 3 copper ingots and 1 tin ingot and leave the third entry empty. The feeder waits until both are available and the destination accepts all four items.[22]
      • The ghost fluid tank copies a fluid and amount from a filled bucket or fluid cell. Any amount from 1 to 16,000 mB works: type it in Fluid mB, then press Set or Enter.[22]
      • It tries one batch every 8 ticks. If any ingredient is missing, or the destination cannot take the whole batch, nothing moves. A redstone signal pauses feeding.[22]
      • Pipes cannot pull loose items or fluid out of its buffers. Fill the buffers through any face except the front, and configure the receiving machine's connected face to accept each resource.[22]

The Hydroponic Accelerator keeps its soil and seed in the machine, so one seed can run it indefinitely when a recipe returns its seed. The basic machine has one growing pair and a 16,000 mB water tank, and a default growth cycle uses 250 mB. The Advanced version has four independent seed and soil pairs and a 32,000 mB tank, and alone can switch between Growth and Mutation modes.[18]

      Power: tiers, cables and FE

Full FE mode is on in this pack (energy.full_fe_mode). Every FTBIC machine accepts and emits FE directly on its faces, so you do not need rectifiers. They are hidden and cannot be crafted. Machine FE input is capped at the machine's own input rate and never burns it out.[3][13][17]

Voltage tiers still matter. Every cable and block is rated for one of five tiers: LV, MV, HV, EV and IV. When FTBIC pushes into an FE consumer through a cable, the flow is capped at that cable tier's transfer rate. Overvoltage from FTBIC cables still burns LV and MV machines, battery boxes and transformers.[3]

The pack raised every transfer rate to four times the mod default:[13]

Energy travels instantly along a connected cable chain, up to energy.max_cable_length, which is 300 here. Different cable tiers do not connect directly. Transformers step voltage down only, never up, and each has one higher-tier face and five lower-tier faces.[13][15][23]

Tip: Match the cable tier to the highest producer or consumer on it, and use transformers to step down to lower tiers.[3][23]
Watch out: A cable that takes too much voltage becomes a Burnt Cable. A machine that does so melts into a burnt shell until you repair it by right-clicking with a fuse. Break a burnt cable, replace it with the right tier, and grind the remains.[3][14][15]

Superconducting Cables have no transfer limit and cannot burn from overload, but machines still obey their own input and output limits and the maximum cable length still applies. Reinforced cables are full cubes that carry power at their tier rate and connect to regular cables of the same tier. Use them to run power through a reactor containment wall. If overloaded they become a Burnt Reinforced Cable, which stays in place as a wall block but no longer conducts.[15]

      Storage and the battery bank

Handheld batteries are portable energy, and battery boxes are network buffers. A battery box has a discharge slot on the left, where a charged battery feeds the box, and a charge slot on the right, where an empty battery or other energy item refills.[24]

Open I/O, choose Energy, and set each face to Output, Input, Both or Disabled. Default keeps the original layout: the front outputs and the other faces input. You can set several faces to Output, and the same controls work on LV, MV, HV and EV boxes.[24]

The pack leaves battery sizes at the mod defaults: LV 4,000, MV 40,000, HV 400,000, EV 10,000,000 and single-use 2,400. Battery box sizes are 40,000, 400,000, 4,000,000 and 40,000,000 for LV, MV, HV and EV.[13]

The Industrial Battery Bank is built by placing Industrial Battery Bank Cells and Ports face to face. Cells add storage, and ports accept and supply energy through their exposed faces. Right-click any cell or port to read the bank's charge, capacity and member counts. A port's screen has four charge slots for batteries and other energy items.[24]

The bank defaults are unchanged here: each cell holds 10,000,000, each port moves 8,192, and up to 128 blocks are searched per port. See energy.bank_cell_capacity, energy.bank_port_transfer and energy.bank_max_blocks. Energy stays in each cell if you split the bank.[13][24]

The Charge Pad accepts up to IV input and recharges worn armor and any batteries in your inventory when you stand on it. Open it to charge up to four inserted items, including Carbon and Quantum chestplates. The pack raised its buffer to 4,000,000 (mod default 1,000,000).[13][25]

Powered armor spends stored energy instead of durability. The chestplate holds the whole set's energy, and the other pieces give no protection if the matching chestplate is empty or missing. Carbon armor holds 1,000,000 and Quantum armor holds 15,000,000, both mod defaults.[7][13]

      Generators in this pack

      • Basic Generator: burns solid fuel in its single slot and keeps burning even when the buffer is full, so connect it straight to storage. Coal and charcoal burn 1,600 ticks and coal blocks 16,000. The pack sets output to 40 (mod default 10) and the buffer to 16,000 (mod default 4,000).[13][16]
      • Geothermal Generator: burns lava from an 8,000 mB internal tank, 1 mB per tick while its buffer has room. Right-click with a lava bucket to add 1,000 mB. The pack sets output to 40 (mod default 20) and the buffer to 9,600 (mod default 2,400).[13][26]
      • Solar panels: they need direct sky access and daylight, and make nothing at night or when covered. The pack sets outputs of 4 for LV, 32 for MV, 256 for HV and 2,048 for EV (mod defaults 1, 8, 64 and 512).[13][27]
      • Wind Mill: output scales with height, and it produces nothing below Y=64. The pack sets the range from 1.2 at minimum to 13 at maximum (mod default 0.3 to 6.5), with a buffer of 400. Rain multiplies output by 1.2 and thunderstorms by 1.5. The in-game guide still shows the mod default range.[13][28]

      Nuclear reactor tuning

The pack changes two reactor settings. machines.nuclear_reactor_output_multiplier is 4 (mod default 1), and nuclear.water_cooling_multiplier is 10 (mod default 2). That second value is the maximum hull cooling multiplier when every outward face is water-clad, and it scales linearly with water-adjacent faces.[13]

The reactor's energy buffer, machines.nuclear_reactor_capacity, is also raised: 100,000 here against a mod default of 50,000.[13]

Nuclear Reactor Chambers attached to the reactor also expose more outer hull faces for water cooling.[14]

How do you progress through FTB Industrial Contraptions?

      7 parts

FTB Industrial Contraptions has no tier list you have to unlock in this pack, so this section follows what the pack's files show: power tiers, machine upgrades, the materials you process, and the armor at the end of the line.[12][16][29]

      Power tiers

Your first power source is the Basic Generator. It is an LV tier machine that burns solid fuel from a single fuel slot. Coal and charcoal burn for 1,600 ticks and coal blocks for 16,000 ticks. Logs and planks only give 300 ticks, and lava buckets and blaze rods are not accepted at all.[16]

The generator keeps burning even when its buffer is full, so connect it straight to storage or a machine to avoid wasting fuel.[16]

To climb tiers without rebuilding a machine, use the Transformer Upgrade. Each one raises the machine's accepted voltage tier by one, so an LV macerator with one accepts MV input without burning out. Stack 4 and any LV machine takes IV power directly, and it can no longer burn out from overvoltage.[29]

      Machine upgrades

Machines that support upgrades have 4 upgrade slots and accept 4 upgrades in total, combined across all slots and types. One slot can hold a stack of 4.[30]

      • Overclocker: multiplies recipe speed by 1.45 and energy use by 1.6 per upgrade. Four of them give about 4.42 times the speed for about 6.55 times the energy, so pair them with a Transformer Upgrade and good cabling.[29][31]
      • Parallel Processing: each upgrade adds one operation, up to four operations with three upgrades. Four operations use four times the energy per tick, with the same energy cost per recipe as one operation.[32]
      • Energy Storage Upgrade: adds to the machine's internal buffer, and you can install up to 4 per machine.[33]
      • Ejector Upgrade: pushes finished items out into an adjacent inventory. One is enough, extra copies do not speed it up.[34]

Parallel Processing only fits the Advanced machines: Advanced Powered Furnace, Advanced Macerator, Advanced Compressor, Advanced Centrifuge, Advanced Ore Washer, Advanced Canning Machine, Advanced Roller, Advanced Extruder and Advanced Hydroponic Accelerator. It also fits the Alloy Smelter and the Reprocessor. Basic processors and utility machines do not accept it.[32]

      Ores and refining

Aluminum ore, in both its stone and deepslate forms, drops Raw Aluminum unless you mine it with Silk Touch. The pack also adds refining recipes for raw aluminum, raw lead and raw iridium.[12][35][36]

The pack adds washing and centrifuging recipes for aluminum, boron and chromium. In each of them 2 Crushed Ore wash into one Washed Ore, and 3 Washed Ore separate into one Refined Concentrate.[12]

      Advanced Alloy

Advanced Alloy is a key mid-game material, and the pack gives it many routes. Alloy smelting recipes for it were added by the pack for FTB Industrial Contraptions itself, plus matching ones for Ender IO and Energized Power. The pack also changed the shaped, smelting, blasting and nine-ingot unpacking recipes, and added a Hephaestus Forge casting recipe that uses 90 molten Advanced Alloy per ingot.[12]

          Carbon materials

The pack changed the recipes for Carbon Fibers and Dense Copper Plate. Carbon Plate and Compressed Coal Ball use the mod's own compressing recipes.[12]

Enderium Dust smelts or blasts into Enderium Ingot. The pack adds many routes from ingot onward: macerating to dust, rolling or pressing into Enderium Plate, and extruding into Enderium Rod, Enderium Gear and Enderium Wire. It also adds Hephaestus Forge casting, where an ingot takes 90 molten Enderium, a nugget 10 and a block 810.[12]

                  Powered armor

Armor is the end of the line. Carbon Armor is the entry tier powered set, and Quantum Armor is the endgame set with flight and full damage soaking at EV charge rates. Both spend stored energy instead of durability, and the chestplate holds the energy for the whole set. The pieces give no protection when the chestplate is empty or missing.[7][8][37]

Tip: Wear the chestplate and stand on a powered charging pad, or put it in one of the pad's four charging slots. The other armor pieces do not store energy.[7]

How does FTB Industrial Contraptions work with other mods?

                  2 parts

The links between FTB Industrial Contraptions and the rest of the pack that the sources here confirm are all recipes: ore processing that ends in ingots from other mods, and Enderium casting in the Smeltery. No quests in this pack involve the mod.[12]

Ore processing ends in other mods' ingots

The pack adds smelting recipes that take the ore stages from this mod (Crushed Ore, Washed Ore and Refined Concentrate) and turn them into ingots. Each metal has its own recipe for each stage, and the results come from other mods, so a single processing line feeds the whole pack.[12]

All of these are plain smelting recipes added by the pack. Here is the aluminum recipe from crushed ore as an example, and the other metals follow the same pattern.[12]

                  Enderium and the Smeltery

Hephaestus Forge connects to this mod through Enderium. The pack adds casting recipes that turn Molten Enderium into Enderium items from this mod. Nuggets, ingots, plates, rods and gears go through a casting table, and the block goes through a casting basin.[12]

Which FTB Industrial Contraptions config options matter?

                  5 parts

Most of the tuning for this mod lives in two files: ftbic-common.toml for machines, energy and nuclear stuff, and ftbic-client.toml for sounds. The pack changed a lot of values from the mod defaults, mostly to make power tiers and storage bigger. Here is what matters, with the mod default next to each changed value.[13][38]

                  Energy and cables

energy.full_fe_mode is set to true in this pack. That means FTB Industrial Contraptions machines accept and emit FE directly on every side, and rectifiers are no longer required. It takes effect on game start, so you can't flip it mid-session.[13]

The pack raised every cable tier's transfer rate (energy per tick), each to four times the mod default:[13]

Battery capacities, battery box capacities and energy.max_cable_length (300) are all at the mod default. The config notes that higher cable lengths increase tick cost.[13]

                  Generators and solar panels

                  Machine capacities

The pack didn't touch how much power machines use per tick (those stay at the mod default). It changed how much energy they can buffer. Basic processing machines hold 4,800 instead of 1,200, for example machines.macerator_capacity, machines.compressor_capacity, machines.extruder_capacity, machines.centrifuge_capacity, machines.canning_machine_capacity, machines.powered_furnace_capacity, machines.roller_capacity and machines.powered_crafting_table_capacity.[13]

machines.quarry_pickaxe_takes_damage is false, so a pickaxe in the quarry's pickaxe slot does not lose durability for each block mined.[13]

                  Nuclear

machines.nuclear_reactor_output_multiplier is 4 (mod default 1), and machines.nuclear_reactor_capacity is 100,000 (mod default 50,000). nuclear.water_cooling_multiplier is at its maximum of 10 (mod default 2). It is the maximum reactor-hull cooling multiplier when every outward face is water-clad, and it scales linearly with water-adjacent faces.[13]

Watch out: nuclear.reactor_meltdown_respects_claims is false, so a reactor meltdown bypasses claim protection from chunk-protection mods and the reactor and surrounding terrain always suffer. nuclear.nuke_respects_claims is true, so the Nuke block and Nuke Arrow use a vanilla explosion that claims can cancel, which also caps the destruction radius well below nuclear.nuke_radius (36).[13]

                  Recipes and sounds

                  All the recipe toggles are on, including recipes.add_plate_recipes, recipes.add_gear_recipes, recipes.add_rod_recipes, recipes.add_dust_from_material_recipes and recipes.add_dust_from_ore_recipes. machines.hydroponic_crop_traits is also true.[13]

On the client side, sounds.machine_volume is 0.35 and sounds.max_machine_sounds is 8, both the mod defaults. Setting the volume to zero disables machine loops, and the nearest active machines get priority when the sound cap is reached. That's the quick fix if a big machine room gets noisy.[38]

                  Where this guide comes from

Written from what FTB Evolution 2 itself ships: its files and recipes, the in-game guidebooks and the mods' own pages. Every statement links to the source it came from, and the numbers are checked against the pack before publishing.
