What is Starbunclemania?

Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.14 guide

Starbunclemania is part of this pack, which ships version 1.5.1 of the mod (file starbunclemania-1.21.1-1.5.1.jar). It has been in the pack since version 3.0 or earlier, so it's a long-standing part of the mod list rather than a recent addition.[1]

Unverified The sources I have don't describe what Starbunclemania does or who it is aimed at, so I can't tell you about its features or mechanics here. They also don't show any quests in this pack that involve it, and they don't place it on the ATM Star path, so I can't say where it fits in the pack's progression.

How do you get started with Starbunclemania?

6 parts

Starbunclemania is all about giving your Starbuncles new jobs. Each job comes from an item you use on the familiar. If you sneak while using one, it works as a plain cosmetic and leaves the current behavior alone. Here is the order I'd make things in.[2]

Step one: Starminer

Start with the Starminer. It changes a Starbuncle's job to mining blocks in the spots you specify. You can give it a tool, and it defaults to an iron pick. The pack changes this recipe from the mod's default, so use the one below.[2][3]

Next: Starbuilder

Next, the Starbuilder makes a Starbuncle place blocks in specified spots. The pack changes its recipe too.[2][3]

Then: StarBin

The StarBin makes a Starbuncle void the items it picks up, including from linked chests. The pack changes its recipe as well.[2][3]

Fluid Jar, then Starbucket

Make the Fluid Containment Jar first, because the Starbucket recipe uses it. The pack changes the Fluid Jar recipe from the default.[3]

Later upgrades

  • Square Robin Mask tweaks a Starbuncle's item transport to round-robin items between inventories. It also stops pickup.[2][3]
  • Starballoon changes a Starbuncle's job to transporting Mekanism chemicals. It supports Starbuncles, Drygmies and Wixies, and you can dye it.[2]
  • Wyrm Degree is a cosmetic for Starbuncles and Bookwyrms. It also lets item Starbuncles read Direction Scroll.[2]

How does Starbunclemania work?

5 parts

Starbunclemania is mostly about giving your Ars Nouveau familiars new jobs, plus a few fluid and Source blocks that support them. The sources for this pack describe the job items, the Wixie cauldron blocks and the fluid glyphs, but they do not describe any multiblock or machine with its own power system.[2]

Starbuncle job items

Each job item changes what a starbuncle does when you use it on one. They all work the same way, so once you know one you know them all.[2]

  • Starbucket changes the job to transporting fluids around.[2]
  • StarbAttery changes the job to transporting FE energy around.[2]
  • Starballoon changes the job to transporting Mekanism chemicals around. It can be dyed, and it supports the Starbuncle, Drygmy and Wixie.[2]
  • Starbuilder changes the job to placing blocks in specified spots.[2]
  • Starminer changes the job to mining blocks in specified spots. You can give it a tool to use, and it defaults to an iron pick.[2]
  • StarBin changes the job to voiding the items it picks up, and items from linked chests.[2]
  • Square Robin Mask tweaks the starbuncle's item transport so it round-robins items between inventories. It also stops pickup.[2]
Tip: If you only want the look, sneak while using any of these items. It works as a cosmetic and does not change what the starbuncle is currently doing.[2]

The pack changed the crafting recipes for four of these job items, so don't rely on what you remember from the mod's defaults. Here they are as the pack has them.[3]

Wixie cauldrons

You can turn some blocks into Wixie workstations. Use a Wixie Charm on the block, and Wixies will then use that block's recipes. Placing a Wixie on one of these blocks also counts for the mod's advancements.[2]

  • Furnace: Wixies use smelting and smoking recipes.[2]
  • Stonecutter: Wixies use stonecutter recipes.[2]
  • Cutting Board: Wixies use cutting board recipes.[2]
  • Cooking Pot: Wixies use cooking pot recipes.[2]
  • Crucible: Wixies use Eidolon's crucible recipes.[2]
  • Fluid Jar (the Wixie's Mixer): Wixies use the milk and water in the side tanks for crafting recipes instead of buckets.[2]

Fluid handling and Source

The Fluid Containment Jar is the mod's fluid container, and its pack recipe was changed from the default. The Source Condenser is crafted from a Fluid Jar and a Source Relay, and the Fluid Sourcelink is a separate block with its own recipe.[2][3]

Fluid glyphs

Two spell glyphs handle fluids in the world. Glyph Pickup Fluid picks up fluids from the world and fills a tank in your hotbar or next to the turret. Glyph Place Fluid places fluid in the world, draining from a tank in the hotbar or next to the turret.[2][3]

Both glyphs have their own descriptions for the usual augments. AOE increases the radius of targeted blocks, and Pierce increases the depth. Randomize adds a chance to not target a block. Sensitive targets the block you hit directly: for pickup it targets the block hit instead of the relative position, and for placing it puts the fluid inside the block you hit instead of relative to it. The texts for Extract and Fortune on these glyphs mention silk touch and fortune when breaking a block, but the sources don't say how that applies to fluids.[2]

How do you progress through Starbunclemania?

4 parts

The sources I have for Starbunclemania are the pack's recipes only, so this section follows how each item is made rather than a tier list. Nothing here defines official tiers. What the recipes do show is a clear order: simple crafting table gear first, then fluid handling, then Ars Nouveau crafting stations.[3]

Starbuncle gear from the crafting table

The pack changed several of these recipes, so don't trust what you remember from the mod's defaults: StarBin, Starminer, Starbuilder and StarbAttery are all marked as changed by the pack.[3]

Fluids and Source

The Fluid Containment Jar is the key part for fluid handling, and the pack changed its recipe. Several later items build on it, including the Source Condenser, the glyph for picking up fluid and the Starbucket.[3]

If you want Source fluid without Ars Nouveau machinery, the pack has its own routes. A Create mixing recipe that makes 1,000 of Source fluid is marked as changed by the pack, and so is a Mekanism rotary recipe for Source fluid and Source gas. The Fluid Sourcelink is a normal crafting recipe from the mod.[3]

Ars Nouveau crafting

The most advanced items go through Ars Nouveau. The Starbucket, Starballoon and Starddle [WIP] have enchanting apparatus recipes, and the saddle is marked [WIP] in its name. The two fluid glyphs, Glyph Pickup Fluid and Glyph Place Fluid, are Ars Nouveau glyph recipes.[3]

Once you have a Starballoon, you can recolour it with a dye recipe that uses the Ars Nouveau dye type.[3]

Cosmetics

The wearable items have recipes straight from the mod, with no pack changes shown: Alakakrinos Hat, Drygmy Horns, Sea Bunny, Starby Ears, Whirli Propeller, Wyrm Degree, Blues Hat and Square Robin Mask. The Chef Hat is an upgrade of the Blues Hat, so craft that first.[3]

How does Starbunclemania work with other mods?

4 parts

Every Starbunclemania recipe in this pack that touches another mod touches Ars Nouveau. The Fluid Sourcelink also pulls in an item from the sauce namespace. Here is how the two mods link up.[3]

Ars Nouveau crafting methods

Two Starbunclemania items are made with Ars Nouveau's own crafting systems instead of the normal crafting grid. The Starballoon is made at the enchanting apparatus, and the Glyph Place Fluid is an Ars Nouveau glyph recipe.[3]

The fluid and Source line

The fluid items lean on Ars Nouveau materials. The Fluid Containment Jar needs an Ars Nouveau archwood log and essence, and the pack changed this recipe from the mod's own version. Check the recipe below rather than relying on what you remember from the mod's defaults.[3]

From there, the Source Condenser is a second step that builds on the Fluid Jar together with Ars Nouveau's Source Relay. The Fluid Sourcelink ties in Source itself, using an Ars Nouveau Source Gem and a Source Fluid Bucket.[3]

Scrolls

The Direction Scroll, Fluid Scroll: Allow and Fluid Scroll: Deny are all shapeless recipes that start from Ars Nouveau's Blank Parchment. The two fluid scrolls also use Water Essence.[3]

Hats, ears and other wearables

These items are all crafted in the ordinary crafting grid and all draw on Ars Nouveau: Alakakrinos Hat, Drygmy Horns, Square Robin Mask, Sea Bunny, Blues Hat, Starby Ears and Whirli Propeller. Most of them use Magebloom Fiber plus a vanilla block, and which wool colour you need depends on the item.[3]
