What is Iron Furnaces?
2 parts
Iron Furnaces is inspired by cpw's Iron Chests mod and adds several tiers of furnace. Its page promises faster smelting, reconfigurable sides, and augments for smoking and blasting. It also teases the top tier by asking whether you can craft the Rainbow Furnace and unlock its power.[1]
This pack includes Iron Furnaces 4.1.8, using the 1.20.1 jar.[2]
Where the quest book puts it
Most of the mod's quests sit in the Smelters chapter, in the Production group (chapter 42 of 44 in the book). That chapter has 41 quests and is shared with other smelting machines, such as Mekanism smelting factories and Mystical Agriculture furnaces. The Iron Furnaces quests in it are:[3]
- Furnace tiers: a quest in "Smelters", a quest in "Smelters", a quest in "Smelters", a quest in "Smelters", a quest in "Smelters", a quest in "Smelters", a quest in "Smelters", a quest in "Smelters", a quest in "Smelters", a quest in "Smelters", a quest in "Smelters" and a quest in "Smelters".[3]
- The top tier has its own quest, a quest in "Smelters", which asks for the Rainbow Furnace.[3]
- Augments come in three quests, each asking for two items. a quest in "Smelters" wants Augment: Smoking and Augment: Blasting. a quest in "Smelters" wants Augment: Speed and Augment: Fuel Efficiency. a quest in "Smelters" wants Augment: Factory and Augment: Generator.[3]
In the Smelters chapter, the Allthemodium Furnace quest is listed as coming after a quest titled Allthemodium Furnace.[3]
Allthemodium and EndGame
The AllTheModium chapter (Production group, chapter 36 of 44) has another Allthemodium Furnace quest, a quest in "AllTheModium". It comes after a quest in "AllTheModium", which in turn comes after a quest in "AllTheModium".[4]
The Rainbow Core has a quest in the EndGame chapter (Storyline group, chapter 7 of 44): a quest in "EndGame". It comes after the untitled checkmark quest a quest in "EndGame". The chapter has 70 quests, and the quest text for 54 of them is not covered here, so check the quest book itself for the rest.[5]
Unverified Whether the ATM Star path uses this mod is not shown by the sources here. Check the quest book to see how its chapters link to the ATM Star quests.
How do you get started with Iron Furnaces?
4 parts
Iron Furnaces adds several tiers of furnace, and in this pack the quest book collects them in the "Smelters" chapter (Production group, chapter 42 of 44). Start there: it has quests for a quest in "Smelters", a quest in "Smelters", a quest in "Smelters" and a quest in "Smelters", plus the later tiers.[1][3]
Your first furnace
Make an Iron Furnace first. The quest book asks for it, and it has a simple recipe that starts from a regular furnace.[3][6]

The Copper Furnace has its own recipe too. There is also a second Iron Furnace recipe that is built from a Copper Furnace, so you can go copper first and step up to iron later.[6]

Climb the tiers
From here the pattern is to build each furnace from the one below it. The Silver Furnace can be made from an Iron Furnace or a Copper Furnace, and the Golden Furnace can be made from an Iron Furnace or a Silver Furnace.[6]

If you would rather upgrade a furnace you already have, the mod also has upgrade items named after what they convert, like the Stone to Iron Furnace Upgrade (Stone to Iron).[6][7]

Add augments
Once you have a furnace you like, look at the Augment: Speed and Augment: Fuel Efficiency (quest a quest in "Smelters"). Speed halves the cooktime for all recipes but uses twice the fuel. Fuel Efficiency makes fuel heat the furnace twice as much, but slows the cooktime by 25% for all recipes. You right-click to insert an augment.[3][7]

The chapter also asks for Augment: Smoking and Augment: Blasting (quest a quest in "Smelters"), which limit a furnace to smoking or blasting recipes only. Another quest covers Augment: Factory and Augment: Generator (quest a quest in "Smelters").[3][7]

The pack changes the Netherite Furnace recipe, so check it before you plan your Nether trip.[6]

The long-term goal is the Rainbow Furnace, which is crafted from a Rainbow Core and Rainbow Plating. The pack adds the recipes for both of those. The Rainbow Core quest sits in the EndGame chapter of the Storyline group.[5][6]
How does Iron Furnaces work?
6 parts
Iron Furnaces is a simple mod on the surface: it adds several tiers of furnace, each with reconfigurable sides, plus augments for things like smoking and blasting. Everything below is how those pieces behave in this pack, as far as the sources explain them.[1]
Upgrading a furnace
You don't have to build every tier from scratch. Upgrade items turn one tier into the next: hold the upgrade and sneak while right-clicking the furnace.[7]
- Gold to Diamond, then Diamond to Emerald or Diamond to Crystal.[7]
- Emerald to Obsidian or Crystal to Obsidian, then Obsidian to Netherite.[7]
- Netherite to Allthemodium, then Allthemodium to Vibranium, then Vibranium to Unobtainium.[7]
The step into Allthemodium Furnace uses Netherite to Allthemodium Furnace Upgrade, which comes from the mod's own recipe.[6][7]

Augments
Augments are right-clicked into a furnace to insert them. Each one has a trade-off, and the tooltips spell out both sides.[7]
- Augment: Speed: halves the cooktime for all recipes, but uses up twice the amount of fuel.[7]
- Augment: Fuel Efficiency: fuel heats up the furnace twice as much, but cooktime is slowed by 25% for all recipes.[7]
- Augment: Blasting: the furnace only allows blasting recipes.[7]
- Augment: Smoking: the furnace only allows smoking recipes.[7]
- Augment: Generator: heat from the furnace generates power, but the furnace can no longer smelt items.[7]
- Augment: Factory: converts the furnace into a factory, which uses power for heat instead of fuel.[7]
The pack changes the recipe for Augment: Fuel Efficiency compared with the mod's own, so check the recipe below rather than relying on other guides.[6]

Sides, automation and redstone
Item transfer sides are handled by the Augment: Inventory Config, which adds configurable sides for item transfer. The mod's description also lists reconfigurable sides as a headline feature.[1][7]
Redstone control also comes from an augment. Right-click in the air to change its mode.[7]
- Redstone Control: the furnace will NOT smelt while it is supplied with a redstone signal.[7]
- Redstone Inverse Control: the furnace will ONLY smelt while it is supplied with a redstone signal.[7]
- Comparator: acts as an internal comparator and outputs the signal to all sides.[7]
- Comparator Subtraction: the same as Comparator, but you can subtract a signal strength that is configured in the furnace GUI.[7]
There is also an experience augment with two modes. In one, the experience from smelting is ejected to nearby fluid tanks. In the other, it is given to the player who placed the furnace. Sneak and right-click in the air to switch between them.[7]
Power and heat
Power works in both directions. The Generator augment turns furnace heat into power, and the Factory augment makes a furnace run on power instead of fuel.[7]
There is also a wireless option. Give the Wireless Heat Transmitter block Forge Energy and it powers every Wireless Heat Receiver bound to it. You bind a receiver by placing it in the transmitter. Then put the receiver in the fuel slot of a furnace. It only works from Iron tier and above.[7]
The Rainbow Furnace
Rainbow Furnace has its own generator rules. For power generation, one of each tier of furnace must be an active generator and not have a full buffer. It outputs energy to any side configured as output, and it won't add energy to the internal buffer. You can only have one Rainbow Generator.[7]
The pack adds the recipes for the two parts of the Rainbow Furnace. Rainbow Core is a shaped recipe that needs the Allthemodium, Vibranium and Unobtainium furnaces. Rainbow Plating is a shapeless recipe that makes 8 plating at once.[6][8]

The Rainbow Furnace is also an ingredient in some of the pack's endgame crafting-table recipes, including the Refined Storage Creative Fluid Storage Disk and the Energy Collector Mk3.[9][10]
Cosmetic items
Furnace Spooka-lator spookalizes a furnace when you right-click it, and sneaking while right-clicking cleanses it. Furnace Wrapping Papers wraps a furnace as a gift, and sneaking while right-clicking opens the gift. The wrapping papers are also needed for the Rainbow Plating recipe.[6][7]
How do you progress through Iron Furnaces?
5 parts
Iron Furnaces in this pack is a ladder of furnace tiers. Every tier has a crafting recipe for the furnace itself, and most also have a dedicated upgrade item so you can step a furnace up without rebuilding it. Some rungs have two routes, so you can pick whichever metal you have to hand.[6]
The tier ladder
- Starting tiers: the Copper Furnace and the Iron Furnace. You can upgrade a stone furnace with the Stone to Copper Furnace Upgrade or the Stone to Iron Furnace Upgrade. The Copper to Iron Furnace Upgrade covers going from copper to iron.[6]
- Silver: the Silver Furnace can be reached from copper with the Copper to Silver Furnace Upgrade or from iron with the Iron to Silver Furnace Upgrade.[6]
- Gold: the Golden Furnace comes from iron via the Iron to Gold Furnace Upgrade or from silver via the Silver to Gold Furnace Upgrade.[6]
- Diamond: the Diamond Furnace is the step after gold, using the Gold to Diamond Furnace Upgrade.[6]
- Emerald and Crystal: the ladder splits here. Both come from the Diamond tier, through the Diamond to Emerald Furnace Upgrade and the Diamond to Crystal Furnace Upgrade. These give the Emerald Furnace and the Crystal Furnace.[6]
- Obsidian: the Obsidian Furnace can be built from either branch, with the Emerald to Obsidian Furnace Upgrade from Emerald or the Crystal to Obsidian Furnace Upgrade from Crystal.[6]
- Netherite: the Netherite Furnace follows Obsidian through the Obsidian to Netherite Furnace Upgrade.[6]
- Modded metals: the Allthemodium Furnace, then the Vibranium Furnace, then the Unobtainium Furnace. The upgrade items are the Netherite to Allthemodium Furnace Upgrade, the Allthemodium to Vibranium Furnace Upgrade and the Vibranium to Unobtainium Furnace Upgrade.[6]
- Top tier: the Rainbow Furnace (Rainbow Furnace) is crafted from a Rainbow Core and Rainbow Plating. See the next sections.[6]
Netherite: the pack changed it
The pack changes both the Netherite Furnace recipe and the Obsidian to Netherite upgrade recipe. The recipes below are the in-pack versions.[6]

The Rainbow Furnace
The Rainbow Furnace is made from a Rainbow Core and Rainbow Plating. Both of those have recipes added by the pack. The core is a shaped recipe built around the Allthemodium Furnace, the Vibranium Furnace and the Unobtainium Furnace. The plating is a shapeless recipe that gives 8 Rainbow Plating and draws on the lower furnace tiers.[6]

It is worth the effort. The pack's own scripts use the Rainbow Furnace in several endgame crafts: the Creative Storage Disk, the Creative Fluid Storage Disk, the creative Thruster and the Energy Collector MK3.[9][10][11][12]
Following the quests
The Smelters chapter (Production group) has quests that ask you to obtain each of these furnaces, from Copper through Unobtainium, plus the Rainbow Furnace. For example, see a quest in "Smelters", a quest in "Smelters", a quest in "Smelters", a quest in "Smelters" and a quest in "Smelters". The Silver and Crystal quests also include a checkmark task.[3][6]
The AllTheModium chapter has a second quest that asks for the Allthemodium Furnace, a quest in "AllTheModium". It comes after the a quest in "AllTheModium" quest.[4][6]
The a quest in "EndGame" quest asks you to obtain the Rainbow Core. It is in the EndGame chapter (Storyline group), after an untitled checkmark quest, and it is one of the quests listed as a prerequisite for the final Creative ME Item Cell quest.[5][6]
Augments
The Smelters chapter also asks for augments two at a time: Augment: Smoking and Augment: Blasting in one quest, Augment: Speed and Augment: Fuel Efficiency in another, and Augment: Factory and Augment: Generator in a third. The pack changes the Fuel Efficiency recipe, so use the in-pack version below.[3][6]

How does Iron Furnaces work with other mods?
2 parts
Iron Furnaces is built to be compatible with most mods, with explicit support for JEI and Project MMO. In this pack, though, its biggest links to other mods are endgame crafting recipes and the quest book.[1]
The Rainbow Furnace in endgame crafting
The top-tier Rainbow Furnace is not only a furnace here. The pack uses it as a component in several creative-tier recipes from other mods. All of them are Extended Crafting shaped table recipes added or changed by the pack's own scripts.[6][9][10][11][12]
Refined Storage's Creative Storage Disk takes the Rainbow Furnace together with items from Avaritia, Extra Storage, Industrial Foregoing, PneumaticCraft and ProjectE.[6][11]
Shaped Table (extendedcrafting)

The Creative Fluid Storage Disk follows the same layout. It swaps in the fluid versions of the storage disk, storage part and black hole item.[6][9]
Shaped Table (extendedcrafting)

The Iron Jetpacks creative thruster also needs the Rainbow Furnace. It sits alongside items from Botanical Extra Machinery and ProjectE Expansion, and the recipe produces the thruster with the creative id.[6][12]

ProjectE's Energy Collector MK3 is a recipe the pack changed rather than added. It uses the Rainbow Furnace together with the Energy Collector MK2 and Fading Matter.[6][10]
Shaped Table (extendedcrafting)
Recipe id: projecte:collector_mk3
The AE2 Creative ME Item Cell also has an Iron Furnaces ingredient, but it is the Rainbow Core rather than the furnace itself. It is one of many items from other mods in that recipe.[6]

In the quest book
The "Smelters" chapter (Production group, chapter 42 of 44) has 41 quests. It mixes the Iron Furnaces tiers with furnaces and smelters from other mods: Mekanism smelting factories, Mystical Agriculture furnaces, the ProjectE Dark Matter and Red Matter furnaces, Ender IO alloy smelters, the Thermal furnace and a Dimensional Pockets furnace module.[3]
The Rainbow Furnace has its own quest there: a quest in "Smelters". The chapter also has quests for the augments, such as a quest in "Smelters", a quest in "Smelters" and a quest in "Smelters".[3]
The "AllTheModium" chapter (Production group, chapter 36 of 44) has a quest for the Allthemodium Furnace, a quest in "AllTheModium", which comes after the Allthemodium Block quest. That chapter has 50 quests, and 17 of them are not covered here. Check the quest book for the rest.[4]
Which Project Infinity 0.1 quests use Iron Furnaces?
3 parts
In this pack, the Iron Furnaces quests are mostly in the Smelters chapter. One more furnace quest is in the AllTheModium chapter, and one Rainbow Core quest is in EndGame. These quests only tell you which items the book wants you to hand in.[3][4][5]
Smelters (Production group)
Smelters is in the Production group and mixes furnaces and smelters from several mods. The Iron Furnaces quests in it each ask you to hand in one item. The listing shows no "after" link on them, except on the Allthemodium one at the end of the list.[3]
- a quest in "Smelters" asks for the Iron Furnace.[3]
- a quest in "Smelters" asks for the Copper Furnace.[3]
- a quest in "Smelters" asks for the Silver Furnace, plus a checkmark task.[3]
- a quest in "Smelters" asks for the Golden Furnace.[3]
- a quest in "Smelters" asks for the Diamond Furnace.[3]
- a quest in "Smelters" asks for the Emerald Furnace.[3]
- a quest in "Smelters" asks for the Crystal Furnace, plus a checkmark task.[3]
- a quest in "Smelters" asks for the Obsidian Furnace.[3]
- a quest in "Smelters" asks for the Netherite Furnace.[3]
- a quest in "Smelters" asks for the Unobtainium Furnace.[3]
- a quest in "Smelters" asks for the Vibranium Furnace.[3]
- a quest in "Smelters" asks for the Rainbow Furnace.[3]
- a quest in "Smelters" asks for the Allthemodium Furnace. It is the only quest in this chapter with an "after" link, and that link points to a quest titled Allthemodium Furnace.[3]
The chapter also has augment quests, and each one asks for two augments at once.[3]
- a quest in "Smelters" asks for Augment: Smoking and Augment: Blasting.[3]
- a quest in "Smelters" asks for Augment: Speed and Augment: Fuel Efficiency.[3]
- a quest in "Smelters" asks for Augment: Factory and Augment: Generator.[3]
AllTheModium (Production group)
In the AllTheModium chapter, the a quest in "AllTheModium" quest asks for the Allthemodium Furnace. It comes after a quest in "AllTheModium", which in turn comes after a quest in "AllTheModium". So the book's order here is ingot, then block, then furnace.[4]
EndGame (Storyline group)
In the EndGame chapter, the a quest in "EndGame" quest asks for the Rainbow Core. It comes after an untitled quest whose only task is a checkmark.[5]
The Rainbow Core quest is also one of the many prerequisites of a quest in "EndGame", which is placed at the end of the chapter's quest tree.[5]
Which Iron Furnaces config options matter?
4 parts
Everything here lives in config/ironfurnaces-client.toml. The big story is power: this pack cuts the RF generated per tick for every furnace that makes power, while leaving the smelting speeds and most tiers alone.[13]
RF generation (changed by the pack)
Each generation option is described in the file as how much RF the furnace generates per tick. Every one of them is set lower than the mod default. Here is what the pack uses, with the mod default in brackets:[13]
- furnaces.copper_furnace.generation is 4 (default 40), and furnaces.iron_furnace.generation is also 4 (default 40).[13]
- furnaces.silver_furnace.generation is 10 (default 100), and furnaces.gold_furnace.generation is 16 (default 160).[13]
- furnaces.diamond_furnace.generation is 24 (default 240), and furnaces.emerald_furnace.generation is 32 (default 320).[13]
- furnaces.crystal_furnace.generation is 36 (default 360), and furnaces.obsidian_furnace.generation is 50 (default 500).[13]
- furnaces.netherite_furnace.generation is 100 (default 1000), and furnaces.rainbow_furnace.generation is 200 (default 2000).[13]
- modded_furnaces.allthemodium_furnace.generation is 200 (default 2000).[13]
- modded_furnaces.vibranium_furnace.generation is 300 (default 3000).[13]
- modded_furnaces.unobtainium_furnace.generation is 500 (default 5000).[13]
Tiers and energy storage
The pack raises furnaces.diamond_furnace.tier and furnaces.emerald_furnace.tier to 2, where the mod default is 1. Tier can be set from 0 to 2.[13]
Stored energy depends on tier. The file flags all three of these as changed by the pack, but it prints the mod default with the same digits, so I can't tell you they differ from the default:[13]
- furnaces.energy.tier_0 is 80,000.[13]
- furnaces.energy.tier_1 is 200,000.[13]
- furnaces.energy.tier_2 is 1,000,000.[13]
Smelting speeds (left at the mod default)
Speed is the number of ticks for one smelting operation, and a regular furnace takes 200 ticks. The pack does not change these. A few examples:[13]
- furnaces.copper_furnace.speed is 180.[13]
- furnaces.iron_furnace.speed is 160.[13]
- furnaces.netherite_furnace.speed is 5.[13]
- modded_furnaces.unobtainium_furnace.speed is 1.[13]
- modded_furnaces.vibranium_furnace.speed is 3.[13]
- modded_furnaces.allthemodium_furnace.speed is 5.[13]
The modded metal furnaces also have a multiplier, the number of items smelted at once. These are default too:[13]
- modded_furnaces.unobtainium_furnace.mult is 64.[13]
- modded_furnaces.vibranium_furnace.mult is 32.[13]
- modded_furnaces.allthemodium_furnace.mult is 16.[13]
The Rainbow Furnace content is switched on through misc.misc.rainbow, which is true. furnaces.rainbow_furnace.rainbow_generation is 50000, the same as the mod default.[13]
Misc options you might touch
- furnaces.recipe_cache is 10. Higher values use more memory.[13]
- furnaces.recipeMaxXPLevel.level is 100. Experience stored in a recipe past this many levels is voided.[13]
- misc.misc.lightupdates is false. Setting it to true stops furnaces emitting light.[13]
- misc.misc.web is false. The file says that setting it to true disables version checking and player identification through the web.[13]
- The JEI options jei.jei.enable_jei, jei.jei.enable_jei_catalysts and jei.jei.enable_jei_click_area are all true.[13]
