What is Explorer's Compass?
2 parts
The Explorer's Compass lets you locate structures anywhere in the world. It supports all registered structures, both vanilla and modded, so it's handy in a pack full of modded content. This pack includes version 1.21.1-3.0.4 for NeoForge.[1][2]
If you want to find biomes instead, the mod's author points to a separate mod, Nature's Compass.[1]
How you use it
- Right-click with the compass to open a GUI where you pick a structure or a group of structures to search for.[1]
- Shift-right-click to reset the compass state.[1]
- Information about your current search is displayed on the HUD.[1]
- When the compass isn't pointing at a structure, it points at the world spawn.[1]
The mod's config file lets you adjust properties like the maximum search radius and blacklisted structures.[1]
Where it fits in this pack
In the quest book, "Finding Your Way" quest sits in the world engine tier 1 chapter. Its task is to obtain the Explorer's Compass, and it comes after quest 3E89531AEC1CF0DA in that chapter.[3]
Unverified Whether the ATM Star path uses this mod is not shown by the sources here, which only cover the one quest in the world engine tier 1 chapter.
How do you get started with Explorer's Compass?
2 parts
The first thing to know about Explorer's Compass is that it's a structure finder. It lets you locate structures anywhere in the world, and it supports every registered structure, both vanilla and modded.[1]
In this pack, the compass shows up early. The quest "Finding Your Way" quest sits in the World Engine Tier 1 chapter, and its task is to have the Explorer's Compass. It unlocks after another quest in that chapter.[3]
How to use it
- Right-click with the compass to open its GUI, then pick a structure or a group of structures to search for.[1]
- Follow the needle. Information about the search is shown on your HUD.[1]
- If the compass isn't pointing at a structure, it points at the world spawn instead.[1]
- Shift-right-click to reset the compass state when you want to start a new search.[1]
Getting your hands on it
Unverified I couldn't confirm how you obtain the Explorer's Compass in this pack. The sources I have list no in-pack recipe for it, so there is no recipe block here. The quest only asks you to have the item. Check the quest in-game to see what it says.
How does Explorer's Compass work?
4 parts
The Explorer's Compass from Explorer's Compass is a single item with no machines, power or fluids involved. It locates structures anywhere in the world, and everything interesting about it comes down to how you use it and how the pack's config limits the search.[1][4]
Using the compass
- Right-click with the compass to open a GUI where you pick a structure or a group of structures to search for.[1]
- Once a search runs, information about it shows on the HUD.[1]
- Shift-right-click to reset the compass state when you want to start over.[1]
When the compass is not pointing at a structure, it points at the world spawn. So a compass aiming at spawn doesn't mean it found something, it just means it has no target.[1]
The mod supports all registered structures, both vanilla and modded. In this pack, though, a long blacklist hides many of them (see below).[1][5]
Search limits in this pack
The pack tightens both search limits compared to the mod defaults. General.maxRadius is set to 3,500 here (the mod default is 10,000). It is the maximum radius searched for a structure. A bigger value improves search accuracy but can make the search more resource intensive.[5]
General.maxSamples is the maximum number of samples taken when searching for a structure. The pack sets it to 4,500, down from the mod default of 100,000.[5]
HUD, teleporting and cache
- General.displayCoordinates is true. You can see the precise coordinates and distance of a located structure on the HUD, instead of relying only on which way the compass points.[5]
- General.allowTeleport is true. It lets a player teleport to a located structure, but only in creative mode, when opped, or in cheat mode.[5]
- General.cleanCache is false. If it were enabled, the compass would clear its cache of previously found structures when a structure couldn't be found. In this pack that cache is kept.[5]
The structure blacklist
General.structureBlacklist lists structures the compass will not show in the GUI and cannot search for. The pack fills it with a lot of entries, so check it before you go hunting for something. Wildcards work: * matches any number of characters and ? matches one.[5]
Some vanilla structures are blacklisted, including the stronghold, village* (all village variants), mansion, monument, mineshaft, fortress, end city, shipwrecks, ruined portals, the pillager outpost and the desert pyramid, jungle pyramid and swamp hut. Everything from Twilight Forest (twilightforest:*) is blocked too.[5]
Several modded structures are also hidden. These include the acropolis, burning arena, cursed pyramid and sunken city from L_Ender's Cataclysm. They also include the ancient battleground, citadel, evoker fort, ice spider den, impaled icebreaker, mangrove hut, mountain tower and pyromancer tower from Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks. The AE2 meteorite from Applied Energistics 2 is blacklisted, along with the Apotheosis towers from Apotheosis and the Wilden dens from Ars Nouveau. The starbuncle shrine from Ars Elemental, the weeping well from Malum, the way sign from Supplementaries and the surface and underground geysers from XyCraft World are on the list as well. So is the FTB Team Bases start structure from FTB Team Bases.[5]
Unverified How you obtain the Explorer's Compass in this pack is not shown by the sources here, which contain no recipe for it.
How do you progress through Explorer's Compass?
The pack's quest book gives Explorer's Compass one progression point, and that is all the sources here show for it. There is no tier breakdown to walk through.[3]
The quest "Finding Your Way" quest sits in the World Engine tier 1 chapter of the quest book. Its task is to have Explorer's Compass. It comes after the quest with the id 3E89531AEC1CF0DA in that same chapter, so finish that one first.[3]
How does Explorer's Compass work with other mods?
3 parts
In this pack, Explorer's Compass connects to other mods through the World Engine. The recipe and the quest below both come from the pack itself.[3][6]
World Engine recipe
The pack adds a Custom Machinery recipe, ftb:world_engine/structure_compass, that involves Explorer's Compass together with items from other mods and a vanilla Compass. Here is the exact in-pack recipe as the site renders it.[6]
Custom Machine (custommachinery)
Recipe id: ftb:world_engine/structure_compass
This is a custom machine recipe added by the pack, not part of the base mod.
Quest tie-in
Quest "Finding Your Way" quest sits in the World Engine tier 1 chapter of the quest book. Its task is to obtain Explorer's Compass, and it unlocks after another quest in the same chapter.[3]
What the compass does
The mod itself lets you locate structures, and it supports all registered structures, both vanilla and modded. Right-click to open a GUI where you pick a structure or group of structures to search for, and shift-right-click to reset the compass.[1]
Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Explorer's Compass?
The Explorer's Compass shows up in one quest in this pack, in the World Engine Tier 1 chapter. That quest is "Finding Your Way" quest, and it has no title in the quest book.[3]
The task is an item task: you hand in the Explorer's Compass.[3]
The quest comes after a quest in "Tier 1: Foundation", so you need to finish that one first.[3]
Which Explorer's Compass config options matter?
4 parts
Most of what you'll want to tweak for the Explorer's Compass lives in General.maxRadius and the other General options in the same file. This pack lowers the search limits from the mod defaults.[5]
Search limits (changed by the pack)
- General.maxRadius is set to 3,500 in this pack. The mod default is 10,000. It is the maximum radius searched for a structure. The mod describes raising it as increasing search accuracy but making the process more resource intensive.[5]
- General.maxSamples is set to 4,500 in this pack. The mod default is 100,000. It caps the number of samples taken when searching for a structure.[5]
Other options you may care about
- General.displayCoordinates is true. You get the precise coordinates and distance of a located structure on the HUD, instead of relying only on which way the compass points.[5]
- General.allowTeleport is true. It allows a player to teleport to a located structure when in creative mode, opped, or in cheat mode.[5]
- General.cleanCache is false. If enabled, the compass clears its cache of previously found structures when a structure couldn't be found.[5]
The structure blacklist
General.structureBlacklist is a list of structures the compass will not display in its GUI and will not be able to search for. It supports * to match any number of characters and ? to match one character. This pack fills it with a long list, so many structures won't show up in the compass menu.[5]
Entries include the wildcard twilightforest:* and minecraft:village*, plus minecraft:stronghold, minecraft:mansion, minecraft:monument, minecraft:mineshaft, minecraft:fortress and the various minecraft:ruined_portal variants. Structures from other mods are listed too, such as ae2:meteorite, malum:weeping_well and several under the cataclysm, irons_spellbooks, apotheosis and ars_nouveau namespaces.[5]
The extra config.json
The pack also ships , which contains a single entry with the key minecraft:village_plains and a value of 1.[7]
