Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks is a mod in FTB StoneBlock 4 1.23.0, where it is version 1.21.1-3.16.3. A magic mod bringing back the classic RPG spellcasting fantasy. (irons spells and spellbooks) (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks?

2 parts

Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks is an RPG-inspired spellcasting mod. You fight dangerous wizards, raid structures, delve through dungeons, collect resources and hunt down powerful magical items. The pack ships version 1.21.1-3.16.3 of it.[1][2]

It's for you if you want a magic playstyle. Every spell belongs to a school (Fire, Ice, Lightning, Holy, Ender, Blood, Evocation, Nature and the hard-to-unlock Eldritch). You can master one school with matching gear, or mix and match and become a jack of all trades.[3]

Where it fits in your progression

  • Early game is about exploring and looting magic structures, each home to a powerful mage who won't be friendly. Scrolls are your first taste of magic, and you inscribe them into a spell book at the Inscription Table. Beginner spell books can be crafted with basic materials, and Arcane Essence plus leather armor gives you Wandering Magician armor for extra max mana.[4]
  • Mid game starts once you reach nether-level resources. That unlocks the Scroll Forge, which crafts scrolls from ink, paper and a focus. You also get intermediate spell books, stronger armor made from Arcane Cloth, and runestones from magical structures.[5]
  • Late game needs netherite and lots of basic resources, and it runs on the Arcane Anvil. It levels up scrolls, upgrades armor and spell books, and imbues weapons with spells. Upgrades are the final form of progression.[6]

How the pack's quests guide you

The general_magic quest chapter follows that same flow. It starts with a spell book, either the Flimsy Journal or the Ironbound Tome ("Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks" quest), then the Inscription Table ("Inscribing Spells" quest). From there it branches to the Arcane Anvil ("Upgrading Spells & Equipment" quest), the Scroll Forge with ink ("Crafting Spells" quest), and a quest for Arcane Essence, Blank Runestone and Mithril Ore ("Arcane Discoveries" quest).[7]

After that, the chapter moves on to better spell books (a quest in "Magic"), Arcane Cloth (a quest in "Magic") and the nether materials Cinder Essence and Hogskin ("The Magic of The Nether" quest). Those unlock the Alchemist Cauldron and the upgrade orb quests. The gearing_up chapter also has quests for Wandering Magician and Wizard armor.[7][8]

Tip: Mithril is a rare Overworld ore found below y = -38 and unexposed to air, and it needs a netherite pickaxe. Plan it for the late game, even though the quests ask for it early in the chapter.[6][7]

How do you get started with Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks?

5 parts

Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks is an RPG-inspired spellcasting mod, and its early game is mostly about exploring and looting. Magic structures are scattered around the world and full of loot. Scrolls will be your first taste of magic. Here's the order I'd tackle things in this pack.[1][4]

Step one: craft a beginner spell book

Beginner spell books can be crafted from basic materials. The first quest in the pack's general magic chapter asks for either the Flimsy Journal or the Ironbound Tome, and you only need one of them ("Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks" quest).[4][7]

Step two: get an Inscription Table

A spell book needs spells inscribed into it, and that happens at the Inscription Table using scrolls. It's the next quest in the chain ("Inscribing Spells" quest). Scrolls can be found in chests, looted from mobs, or crafted.[4][7][10]

Tip: A scroll can be used on its own to cast its spell, which skips mana cost and cooldown but uses the scroll up. It's usually better to save scrolls and inscribe them into a book for repeated use. Taking a scroll back out of a book uninscribes the spell.[4][10]

Step three: make Wandering Magician armor

Arcane Essence combined with leather armor makes Wandering Magician armor, an early source of additional max mana. The pack's gearing quests ask for a piece of this armor plus a piece of Wizard armor ("Iron's Spells Basic Armor" quest), and another accepts either type of helmet ("Iron's Spells Elemental Armor" quest). Some basic materials can be found sparsely in vanilla structures.[4][8][9]

Watch out: Every magic structure is home to a powerful mage who won't take kindly to you. Go in prepared.[4]

Step four: move up to Arcane Cloth and a better book

The next quest asks for Arcane Essence, a Blank Runestone and Mithril Ore ("Arcane Discoveries" quest). Raiding magical structures is how you get Arcane Essence in quantity. From there the quest book points you to Arcane Cloth (a quest in "Magic"), which you will use for stronger armor.[5][7]

An intermediate spell book is the next upgrade: the Apprentice's Spell Book or the Enchanted Spell Book (a quest in "Magic"). Both recipes use Hogskin, which Hoglins drop. A separate quest after the same step asks for Cinder Essence and Hogskin ("The Magic of The Nether" quest).[5][7][9]

Step five: Scroll Forge and Arcane Anvil

The Scroll Forge crafts scrolls from ink, paper and a focus. The ink sets the rarity, and so the level, and the focus sets the spell's school. The in-game guide places it around the point you reach nether-level resources. In the pack, its quest also asks for an ink ("Crafting Spells" quest).[5][7]

The Arcane Anvil is the most powerful crafting station. It levels up scrolls, upgrades armor and spell books, and imbues weapons with spells ("Upgrading Spells & Equipment" quest). The in-game guide treats it as a late-game goal, powered by netherite and large quantities of basic resources.[6][7]

How does Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks work?

6 parts

This mod's systems are built around crafting stations, consumable scrolls, ink and school-specific materials. This section covers how scrolls, spell books, ink and upgrades fit together.[4][5][10]

Scrolls and the Inscription Table

A scroll holds one spell with a level, a bit like an enchanted book. You can use a scroll on its own to cast the spell, and that skips mana costs and cooldown. The scroll is used up when you do.[10]

Most of the time you'll want to inscribe scrolls into a spell book with the Inscription Table instead, so the spell can be reused. You can get a scroll back out of a spell book, but doing that uninscribes the spell.[4][10]

Scroll Forge, ink and schools

Once you reach nether-level resources, the Scroll Forge lets you craft scrolls from ink, paper and a focus. The ink sets the rarity, and so the level, while the focus sets the spell's school.[5]

Ink tiers are strict. Common ink only crafts the lowest level of spells, so if a spell's lowest level is above common, common ink can't make it. The same goes for every other tier. Rare and higher inks mostly come from magic treasure chests or from killing spellcasting mobs. Legendary ink crafts the most powerful spells, but some spells have several legendary levels, and those need the Arcane Anvil.[11]

  • Fire: Blaze Rod. Centered on damage and damage over time.[3]
  • Ice: Frozen Bones. Damage and crowd control. Frozen bones are dropped by strays.[3][12]
  • Lightning: Bottle o' Lightning. Concentrated damage.[3]
  • Holy: Divine Pearl. Support, healing and buffing allies.[3]
  • Ender: Ender Pearl. Damage, utility and mobility.[3]
  • Blood: Blood Vial. Damage that buffs the caster.[3]
  • Evocation: Emerald. The broadest mix of offensive, defensive and utility spells.[3]
  • Nature: Poisonous Potato. Debuffs on enemies, with some damage to finish them off.[3]

For blood, you cook mobs in a vanilla cauldron heated by a campfire underneath, or in an Alchemist Cauldron.[9][12]

Eldritch works differently. You can't craft or cast Eldritch spells right away. You have to find ancient manuscript shreds and piece them back together with an echo shard. Consuming the restored manuscript teaches you a single Eldritch spell. After that, the echo shard acts as the focus for it.[3]

The Alchemist Cauldron

Besides cooking blood, the Alchemist Cauldron recycles scrolls into more useful spells.[10][12]

The Arcane Anvil

The Arcane Anvil is the late-game crafting station. It levels up scrolls, upgrades armor and spell books, and imbues weapons with spells. To level a scroll, combine it with ink of the rarity of its next level.[6][10]

Unique spell books come with locked spells that you can't remove or edit. You can still improve them: combine the book in the Arcane Anvil with a higher-level scroll of the same spell.[13]

Upgrades

Upgrades are the last step of progression. By default, any armor and any spell book can be upgraded. The in-game guide says an upgrade orb of a given attribute is made from a base upgrade orb and 8 runes of that attribute. The recipe below is the one this pack actually uses for the blood orb.[6][9]

Armor materials come from raiding magical structures, which is where you get high quantities of arcane essence. Class mages always drop a rune of their school. Mithril is a rare Overworld ore found below y = -38 and unexposed to air, and it needs a netherite pickaxe. Cinder essence drops from Ancient Knights.[5][6]

Mana and casting

Casting implements cast your active spell when you right-click them, and most also give passive bonuses. Wandering Magician armor is an early source of extra max mana. The Gluttony effect converts food you eat into mana based on its nutrition. The Instant Mana effect restores 25 mana plus 5% of your max mana per level.[4][12][14]

The Amulet of Concentration makes long casts uninterruptible. The pack changed its recipe, so don't rely on the mod's default.[9][12]

How do you progress through Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks?

3 parts

Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks has its own progression flow of early game, mid game and late game, and the pack's magic quests walk you through many of the same items. Here's the path, tier by tier.[4][5][6][7][15]

Early game: scrolls, books and cloth

Early on it's all about exploring and looting. Magic structures are dotted around the world, and each one is home to a powerful mage who won't welcome you. Scrolls are your first taste of magic. You can burn one to cast its spell, but it's better to inscribe it into a spell book at an Inscription Table so you can reuse it.[4]

  1. The first quest in the magic chapter asks for a Flimsy Journal or an Ironbound Tome.[7]
  2. Next comes the Inscription Table quest, which unlocks the rest of the chapter.[7]
  3. After that, hand in Arcane Essence, a Blank Runestone and Mithril Ore in a single quest.[7]

Arcane Essence can be combined with leather armor to make Wandering Magician armor, an early source of extra max mana. A quest in the gearing-up chapter accepts a piece of either Wandering Magician armor or Wizard armor. Wizard pieces are crafted from Arcane Cloth.[4][8][9]

Mid game: nether resources, the Scroll Forge and ink

Reaching nether-level resources unlocks the Scroll Forge, which crafts scrolls from ink, paper and a school focus. The ink sets the rarity, and so the level, of the scroll. The pack has a quest asking for any ink together with the Scroll Forge, and another for the Arcane Anvil. Both unlock right after the Inscription Table quest.[5][7]

The next spell books are the Apprentice's Spell Book and the Enchanted Spell Book, both covered by one quest. Each further tier of craftable book adds slots and often extra bonuses. Hogskin, dropped by Hoglins, is part of both recipes.[5][7][9][16]

Another quest asks for Cinder Essence and Hogskin. Three quests follow from it: the Lesser Spell Slot Improvement, the Alchemist Cauldron, and a quest for an Empty Upgrade Orb plus any one school orb.[7]

The Alchemist Cauldron is how you climb the ink ladder. Common ink crafts only the lowest-level spells, and each higher ink opens up stronger ones. In this pack the cauldron brews Common into Uncommon, Rare, Epic and finally Legendary Ink.[9][11]

Tip: The pack changes the Create filling and emptying recipes for all five inks, so check those recipes instead of assuming the mod's defaults.[7][9]

Late game: the Arcane Anvil and upgrades

Late game starts once you have netherite and large amounts of basic resources, and it runs on the Arcane Anvil. It's the most powerful crafting station, used to level up scrolls, upgrade armor and spell books, and imbue weapons with spells.[6]

Upgrades are the final form of progression. A school upgrade orb is made from an Empty Upgrade Orb and a rune of that school. The empty orb itself needs an Arcane Ingot, Cinder Essence and a mithril-type material. School armor uses arcane cloth plus a school rune.[6][9]

How does Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks work with other mods?

5 parts

Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks doesn't live on its own in this pack. A handful of its items show up in recipes with Ars Nouveau, Draconic Evolution, ProjectE, FTB Unearthed and more. Most of these are pack-added recipes, so you won't find them in the mod's own defaults.[9]

Ars Nouveau

Two pack-added World Engine recipes run through a custom machine, and both involve Arcane Cloth. Their recipe ids are named duality necklace and duality ring, and the blocks below show the exact in-pack inputs.[9]

The Ars Nouveau side is the Dull Trinket in the necklace recipe and the Ring of Potential in the ring recipe.[9]

Dragon and end-game crossovers

The World Engine dragon head recipe mixes Dragonskin with Draconic Evolution parts like the Dragon Heart, plus a Mob Grinding Utils beheading upgrade. Dragonskin is dropped by the Ender Dragon, so this one is a true late-game recipe.[6][9]

The pack-added World Engine recipe named soul cage centres on the Soul Cage and the Ender Rune. The recipe block below shows the exact inputs.[9]

Apothic Enchanting's Infused Dragon's Breath and Chicken Roost's Enderium Ingot also appear in that recipe.[9]

Ender IO's Broken Spawner is the last of the other-mod items in the soul cage recipe.[9]

ProjectE and Immersive Engineering

The pack adds a shaped crafting recipe for the Swiftwolf's Rending Gale. The Iron's Spells part is the Bottle o' Lightning, which is also the focus item of the Lightning school.[3][9]

Immersive Engineering's Electrum Coil Block and ProjectE's Dark Matter also appear in it.[9]

ProjectE's Iron Band completes the set of other-mod items in that recipe.[9]

FTB Unearthed

Two more pack-added World Engine recipes bring in FTB Unearthed items. The Worker Token belongs to the recipe named villager spell book, which involves the Enchanted Spell Book. The blocks below show the exact inputs.[9]

The Echo Encoder belongs to the other one, which involves the Amethyst Resonance Charm.[9]

Which FTB StoneBlock 4 quests use Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks?

2 parts

The mod's main questline is the "general_magic" chapter. A few more quests sit in other chapters. None of the quests have titles in the pack files, so I'll point to them by their quest references.[7][8][17][18]

The general_magic chapter

Everything here unlocks in a chain, so you can follow it top to bottom. You start with "Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks" quest, which asks for a spell book: either the Flimsy Journal or the Ironbound Tome. Then "Inscribing Spells" quest asks for the Inscription Table.[7]

The Inscription Table quest opens three quests at once:[7]

Finishing the essence, rune and ore quest opens three more:[7]

The Cinder Essence and Hogskin quest leads to the last three quests in the chapter:[7]

Quests in other chapters

The "gearing_up" chapter has two quests for the mod's armor. "Iron's Spells Basic Armor" quest needs one piece from the Wandering Magician set (for example the Wandering Magician Hood) and one piece from the Wizard set (for example the Wizard Helmet). "Iron's Spells Elemental Armor" quest is simpler: you hand in either of those two helmets.[8]

The "bounty_board" chapter has "Kill Echo of Tyros" quest. Its tasks are the Cinderous Soulcaller, a kill task and two structure tasks.[17]

The "getting_started" chapter has "The First World Craft" quest. It asks for the Amethyst Resonance Charm, an observation task and an item from another mod. It unlocks after an earlier quest in that chapter.[18]

Unverified The pack files don't show which mobs or structures the bounty_board quest wants, or what the observation task in getting_started involves, so check those in-game.
