What is Oritech?

2 parts

Oritech is a tech mod full of processing machines, world interaction machines, logistics parts, equipment and more. Most machines are animated multiblocks, and you upgrade them with addon blocks. This pack ships Oritech 0.16.2.[1][2][3]

It's for you if you like automating farms and building long processing chains. The mod tries to give you several ways to get most things, so you rarely get stuck waiting on one rare item. It also aims for renewable fuel and items through big automated farms. Later content includes drones, lasers that mine blocks, cybernetic augmentation and particle accelerators.[1]

Tip: The in-game guide strongly recommends using REI or EMI to look up recipes. Oritech works best with EMI.[1][4]

How the early game flows

  1. Gather copper, iron, coal and nickel, plus some gold, redstone and a couple of diamonds.[5]
  2. Build a Basic Generator. It won't make much power, but it gets you started.[6]
  3. Set up a Pulverizer and a Foundry so you can make alloys like steel, electrum and adamant without wasting resources in a crafting table.[7]
  4. Build an Assembler and a Centrifuge for components you can't craft by hand, or can craft only wastefully.[8]
  5. Craft an Enderic Laser and use a Target Designator to aim it at amethyst clusters to get Fluxite.[9]

Your first generator.

Where it fits in the pack

The pack has a dedicated Oritech quest chapter that follows a similar order. You start with a machine core, then the a quest in "?" quest for a magnetic coil and a motor. After that come the foundry, basic generator, powered furnace, pulverizer, tree cutter, centrifuge and pump. Further quests cover the adamant ingot, the assembler and enderic compound, plus the machine addons.[10]

Past the basics, the in-game guide also covers logistics pipelines, tools, and an Arcane section for enchanting, mob spawning and souls.[11][12][13][14][15][16]

Unverified The sources do not show Oritech on the ATM Star quest path.

How do you get started with Oritech?

6 parts

Oritech has a clear starting path, and the pack's Oritech quest chapter lines up with it. The mod's own guide strongly recommends REI or EMI for looking up recipes, so keep one handy.[4][10]

Gather resources

Start by finding an ore boulder or going mining. You'll need copper, iron, coal and nickel. Gold, redstone and a couple of diamonds will be useful soon after, so grab those too.[5]

Coils, motors and your first machines

Near the start of the quest chapter, one quest asks for a Primitive Machine Core or a Basic Machine Core. Another, a quest in "?", asks for a Magnetic Coil and a Motor. Completing it leads on to the quests for the Foundry, Basic Generator, Powered Furnace, Pulverizer, Centrifuge and Pump.[10]

The pack changed the magnetic coil's assembler recipe, so check it below rather than relying on what you remember from the base mod. The motor assembler recipe is the mod's own.[17]

All Oritech machines need energy to run, so your Basic Generator comes early. It won't produce much power, but it's enough to get started. When you need more, build extra generators or look at the other generator types.[6][18]

Alloys: pulverizer and foundry

You can make steel, electrum and adamant in a crafting table, but that wastes resources. Build a Pulverizer and a Foundry as soon as you can so you can make alloys efficiently. In the pack's quests, the Adamant Ingot is the next goal after the foundry.[7][10]

Assembler and centrifuge

Build an Assembler. It crafts some things, like coils and motors, more efficiently than you can by hand, and it makes things you can't craft at all. The Centrifuge processes certain resources and produces components you'll need for further progress.[8]

The Processing Unit and Enderic Lens are both assembler recipes, and in the pack's quests the laser quest comes after both of them.[10][17]

Lasers and fluxite

You can't make much progress without Fluxite. To get it, you build an Enderic Laser, which pulls together your alloys, assembled components, enderic compound and carbon fibre strands. The pack's quest a quest in "?" asks for the laser and a Target Designator together, and the fluxite quest comes right after it.[9][10]

Power the laser with a generator, then use the target designator to aim it at an amethyst cluster. Grown clusters turn into fluxite when the laser destroys them. Budding amethyst isn't broken, and aiming at it makes it grow faster. To set the target, select it with the designator, then shift+right-click the bottom laser block. The laser fires in that direction and will also destroy blocks in front of and behind the target.[9][19]

Watch out: The enderic laser uses huge amounts of energy, and blocks that don't fit in its inventory are lost. Run an item pipe from it so drops keep getting collected.[19]

The pack also changed a Powah energizing recipe that turns amethyst into fluxite, which gives you a second route.[17]

Better ore yields and beyond

A Fragment Forge improves ore yield. It breaks ores into clumps and small clumps, and the centrifuge turns clumps into dusts you can smelt. Processing can also give secondary ores, for example platinum from nickel. In the pack's quests it comes after the Flux Gate quest.[10][20]

After that it's up to you. Look into logistics pipelines, the other machine categories and the rest of the in-game manual, then start experimenting.[11]

How does Oritech work?

11 parts

This is how Oritech's machines behave once you have them placed: where items go in and out, how multiblocks and addons are built, and how energy, fluids and items move around your base. Everything below follows the mod's own in-game guide, so you can check it in the book.[3][21]

Unverified No config files for this mod were available to check, so the numbers in this section are the mod's documented values. If the pack tuned any of them, I can't confirm it from the sources.

Machine basics

Every Oritech machine needs energy to run. For items, the top side is input only, the sides can insert and extract, and the bottom only allows extraction.[18]

When you break a machine, the items inside drop, but the energy and fluids inside are lost. A normal pickaxe is enough to break one, so you don't need a wrench.[18]

Multiblocks and machine cores

Some machines need extra machine cores placed at specific positions around them. The machine's tooltip lists how many cores it needs, and cores can't be shared between machines. Place the machine first, then right-click it to highlight where the cores go for a few seconds.[22]

You can also right-click the machine while holding a core, and it will place the next core for you. This only works if the target spots are clear. If something is in the way, that block gets highlighted instead.[22]

Each core has a quality, and better cores raise the machine's total quality. Hover the machine icon in the top left of its UI to see the result. Quality doesn't change how the machine runs. It only decides how many addons you can add, so if you won't use addons, the cheapest cores are fine.[22]

Addons and extenders

Addons are blocks attached to the machine itself or to a connected Machine Addon Extender. They can raise speed, improve energy efficiency, give access to specific inventory slots and more. Machines only accept addons at certain positions. Check the addons page in the machine UI, or look for the markers on the machine.[23]

Addons switch on when you right-click the machine, and their pink parts turn blue to show they're active. An extender doesn't affect the machine directly. It just provides more spots for addons that then count toward the machine it's connected to.[23]

How far you can chain extenders depends on the machine's core quality. A core quality of 1 can't use any extender, and each extender an addon has to pass through needs 1 more quality. Only the number of extenders between the machine and the addon counts, so you can branch extenders freely. If that number is higher than the core quality, the addon simply won't connect.[23]

Redstone control

Only a few blocks, like the portable tank and portable energy storage, react to redstone directly. For everything else you need a Control Unit Addon. Attach it like any other addon and set it up in its UI. The comparator signal comes from the addon rather than the machine, and a redstone signal to the addon disables the machine.[24]

Power

Oritech runs on RF. There is a single cable tier, and it moves up to 10k RF/t. Generators always push energy out. Every other machine accepts energy from all sides and won't pass it on. Cables hold up to 10k RF in each machine connection when they can't output it.[25]

Energy storage blocks come in 2 sizes. They accept energy from all sides through a green port and only output through the single red port. A redstone signal turns off all of their output.[25]

  • Basic Generator: burns fuel like a furnace and makes 32 RF/t.[26]
  • Lava Generator: burns lava piped in with a fluid pipe, has 2 addon slots and makes 64 RF/t.[26]
  • Bio Generator: burns biomass, has 2 addon slots and makes 64 RF/t.[26]
  • Fuel Generator: burns crude oil or turbofuel, has 2 addon slots and makes 256 RF/t.[26]
  • Large Solar Panel: makes between 32 and 224 RF/t, depending on the machine cores used.[26]

Steam power

Every generator except the basic one can make steam instead of RF if you add a Steam Boiler Addon. The machine then stops producing RF directly and makes steam at a 2:1 rate, consuming water. You pump water and steam in and out through the addon, not the machine.[27]

Crafting Shaped

Adamant Ingotany platingAdamant Ingot

Recipe id: oritech:crafting/addon/steamboiler

There is also an alternative recipe, oritech:crafting/addon/steamboileralt.

A steam engine turns steam into RF and outputs water, but around 20% of the water is lost, so the generators need a steady water supply. You can chain several engines. They share the first engine's energy storage, water tank and steam tank, and work together.[27]

Engine speed scales linearly with how full the steam tank is, up to a multiplier of 10 when it's full. Efficiency also changes with speed and is best at around 700%, so running slower or faster than that gives you less RF per unit of steam. Energy leaves through the red machine slots, and fluid ports are marked blue.[27]

Wireless energy with the enderic laser

An enderic laser pointed at a block that stores energy fills it, ignoring all input and output limits. That includes machines that don't accept energy from cables. You aim it by selecting a target with the target designator and shift+right-clicking the bottom laser block. The maximum range is 64, and a redstone signal disables it.[19]

Some machines depend on this. The atomic forge can't connect to energy pipes and must be powered by an enderic laser. The bedrock extractor must also be laser-powered, and it only works when placed on resource nodes.[28][29]

Moving items

Item pipes connect to each other and to all neighboring inventories. They have no inventory of their own, so a hopper can't push items into one. Instead, right-click a connected pipe to set it to extract. If that pipe touches several inventories, all of those connections switch to extraction. Extracted items go to the closest available inventory further down the network.[30]

Watch out: An extracting pipe needs a network of at least 2 blocks to move anything. Networks can't be longer than 64 blocks, so split longer ones. Pipes always take from the first non-empty slot, and an item that can't be inserted anywhere on the network blocks extraction from that inventory.[30]

To sort items, place an item filter block next to the target inventory. It has 5 input sides and outputs to the side it faces. It only accepts items matching the filter you set in its UI and passes them to the inventory, but it won't pull items out of neighboring inventories on its own.[30]

Moving fluids

Fluid Pipe works like an item pipe, but each connection has a small internal storage. An extracting pipe pulls from all neighboring blocks. Unlike item pipes, other blocks can also push fluids into it, and the pipe carries them to the next available fluid storage.[31]

The small tank holds up to 256 buckets and keeps its contents in the item when you break it. A comparator reads how full it is, and stacked tanks let the fluid flow down on their own.[31]

The Pump extends a trunk downward until it hits a liquid or an obstruction, then scans the liquid body. It can only drain liquid bodies up to a size limit, and the scan may take a few seconds on big ones. It pumps up to 4 buckets per second at 512 RF per block, into its internal storage.[32]

Machine frames and world machines

The block placer, block destroyer and fertilizer all work on a gantry built from Machine Frame. The frame must be rectangular and empty inside, and the machines always act on the blocks below it. You can put several machines on one frame, and the Speed Addon speeds up both their movement and their operation.[33]

The block destroyer breaks everything on the layer below, and the time and energy it needs depend on block hardness. Add a Crop Filter Addon to make it skip unfinished crops. Each Quarry Addon multiplies its range by 8: one addon gives 8, 2 addons give 64, and 3 addons give 512.[34]

Drone ports

Drone ports send items over long distances. Both ports must be built and powered. Bind the target by shift+right-clicking it with a target designator, then put the designator in the special slot in the sending port's UI. The target must be at least 50 blocks away and in a chunk-loaded area.[35]

A port sends to one specific target but can receive from several ports. Each drone takes a few seconds to land, so a receiving port can get overloaded. Delivery time is the same at any distance, but the energy cost grows with the square root of the distance.[35]

How do you progress through Oritech?

5 parts

Oritech in this pack is one long quest chain, and the chain is the best map you have. Each tier unlocks the next machine, and most steps hang off a handful of key items: the machine cores, the assembler, fluxite and the atomic forge. Here is the path in order.[10]

Tier 0: gather resources

Before any machine, you need copper, iron, coal and nickel. Gold, redstone and a couple of diamonds will also come in handy soon. Look for an ore boulder or just go mining.[5]

Tier 1: first power and basic machines

The chain starts with a Primitive Machine Core or Basic Machine Core (a quest in "?"), and a Magnetic Coil plus a Motor (a quest in "?"). The coil is crafted in the assembler, and the pack changed that recipe from the mod's default.[10][17]

Tier 3: lasers, fluxite and the reactor

The assembler gives you the Enderic Lens (a quest in "?") and the Processing Unit (a quest in "?"). With both, you can build the Enderic Laser and Target Designator (a quest in "?"). The guide says you need fluxite before you can make much progress.[9][10][17]

The guide's way to get Fluxite is to aim an enderic laser at amethyst clusters with the target designator. This pack also changed a Powah energizing recipe that turns amethyst gems into fluxite.[9][17]

The processing unit opens the Placer Block, Item Filter, Fertilizer Block, Crop Filter Addon, Machine Frame and the Nuclear Reactor Controller (a quest in "?"). The reactor quests then cover rods, fuel port, reflector, walls, vents, heat pipes, absorber and condenser, and the energy and redstone ports. The pack changed the plutonium pellet recipes, so don't assume the defaults there either.[10][17]

Fluxite also leads to the Flux Gate, the Exo armor set, the Turbofuel Bucket and the jetpack line. The flux gate opens Large Energy Storage, Big Solar Panel, Fragment Forge and Bio Generator. The pack changed the Large Energy Storage recipe.[10][17]

How does Oritech work with other mods?

6 parts

Oritech is built to plug into other mods, so metals, fluids and components can move between its machines and the rest of the pack. Its own compatibility list on NeoForge includes Applied Energistics 2, Create, Ender IO, Immersive Engineering, Industrial Foregoing, Mekanism, PneumaticCraft: Repressurized, Powah! and Productive Metalworks. This pack also adds and changes recipes of its own, and I'll flag those below.[1][17]

Metals with Productive Metalworks

Oritech's small dusts can be melted in Productive Metalworks, for example Small Copper Dust, Small Gold Dust, Small Iron Dust, Small Nickel Dust and Small Platinum Dust. The molten metals then feed alloy recipes that make Oritech's own fluids, such as Molten Adamant, Molten Biosteel, Molten Duratium and Molten Energite.[17]

You can cast those fluids into Biosteel Ingot, Duratium Ingot and Energite Ingot with an ingot cast. Fluxite comes from a gem cast, and Block of Electrum can be cast from molten electrum.[17]

The pack changed the biomass casting recipes. Oritech's Biofuel now casts into Mekanism's Block of Bio Fuel and Bio Fuel. The pack also added stonecutting recipes that convert Block of Biomass and Block of Bio Fuel back and forth.[17]

Ore clumps and FTB Materials

The pack adds an Oritech route for turning raw ore into FTB Materials clumps and then dirty dusts. In the Refinery, Sheol Fire plus a raw material gives a clump and lava. In the Atomic Forge, a clump plus Fluxite gives a dirty dust. The pack has these for aluminum, antimony, copper, gold, iridium, iron, lead, nickel, osmium, platinum, silver, tin, uranium and zinc. Iron is the example below.[17]

Fluids, plastic and fuel

Several Centrifuge fluid recipes are changed by the pack to use Modern Industrialization fluids. Sulfuric Acid is used for the Basic Battery and Advanced Battery, and for turning copper, gold, iron, nickel and platinum clumps into gems plus Mineral Slurry. Naphtha is used for Polymer Resin and Silicon Wash.[17]

Plastic from the Centrifuge comes out as Industrial Foregoing's Plastic. You can make it from polymer resin or from Raw Biopolymer. The pack added a recipe that makes raw biopolymer from Kelp Resin and water.[17]

Turbofuel (Turbofuel) can be made with Fluxite and either PneumaticCraft Diesel (a recipe the pack changed), PneumaticCraft Crude Oil, or Industrial Foregoing Biofuel.[17]

Components and materials from other mods

Plutonium and the reactor

Powah's energizing recipe, changed by the pack, turns Uranite Crystal into Plutonium Dust. The Assembler recipes for Plutonium Pellet were also changed to use that dust. The reactor quest accepts either Uranium Pellet or Plutonium Pellet as fuel.[10][17]

Oritech items in other mods' recipes

The pack also uses Oritech items as ingredients in other mods' recipes. The Assembler makes End Portal Frame using Mekanism's Teleportation Core and Oritech's Flux Gate. The Create sequenced assembly for Infinitely Compressed Circuit Board needs Advanced Computing Engine and Flux Gate.[17]

Which FTB Skies 2 quests use Oritech?

5 parts

Same as in the FTB Skies 2 1.22.0 guide

Oritech has one quest chapter in this pack, called "oritech". Its quests have no titles, so each one is identified by its ID and by the item it asks for. Every task I can see is an item task, so the chapter works as a tech tree: you progress by getting each machine or material in turn.[36]

Where the chapter starts

There are two entry points. a quest in "?" asks for a Primitive Machine Core or a Basic Machine Core. a quest in "?" asks for a Magnetic Coil and a Motor. Both unlock after a quest that isn't part of the quest list I was given, so I can't tell you what that one is.[36]

Materials, augments and the assembler

Processing unit, lasers and the reactor

a quest in "?" (Enderic Lens) follows the assembler. a quest in "?" (Processing Unit) needs the assembler quest plus one quest that isn't in the quest list I was given.[36]

The processing unit opens several branches: a quest in "?" (Placer Block), a quest in "?" (Item Filter), a quest in "?" (Crop Filter Addon), a quest in "?" (Fertilizer Block) and a quest in "?" (Nuclear Reactor Controller). a quest in "?" (Machine Frame) needs both the fertilizer and placer quests.[36]

The reactor controller unlocks the reactor build quests: a quest in "?" (heat vent and heat pipe), a quest in "?" (a rod, a fuel port, a reflector and a uranium or plutonium pellet), a quest in "?" (heat absorber and coolant absorber port), a quest in "?" (reactor wall) and a quest in "?" (energy port and redstone port).[36]

a quest in "?" asks for the Enderic Laser and the Target Designator, and needs both the lens and processing unit quests. It leads to a quest in "?" (Enderic Railgun) and a quest in "?" (Fluxite).[36]

What changed in Oritech between versions?

1 part

FTB Skies 2 1.4.1 ships Oritech version 0.16.2, using the NeoForge build of the mod. Oritech has been in the pack since FTB Skies 2 1.0.1 or earlier. The sources I have don't include any pack changelog entries for this mod, so I can't tell you how its version changed between pack releases.[2]

Oritech 0.16.2

This is the version you get in 1.4.1. Here is what the mod's own changelog lists for it:[2][37]

  • New: you can now extract input fluids from machines by interacting with fluid container items.[37]
  • Fixed: nickel ore not generating on NeoForge.[37]
  • Fixed: a crash with certain fluid storage interactions, and a separate crash with the NeoForge fluid implementation.[37]
  • Fixed: the unstable container deleting blocks.[37]
  • Fixed: augments not being synced in some cases.[37]
  • Fixed: recipe viewer slot positioning for some recipes.[37]
  • Fixed: pressure plate variants and strange matter translations.[37]
Tip: Since the nickel ore generation fix is listed for NeoForge, and this pack runs the NeoForge build, it applies to you in 1.4.1.[2][37]
