What is FTB Materials?
FTB Evolution 2 1.1.0 includes FTB Materials at version 26.1.2.6 (file ftb-materials-26.1.2.6.jar). The mod was already in the pack in 1.0.2 or earlier, so it isn't a recent addition.[1]
How do you get started with FTB Materials?
4 parts
FTB Materials is the mod that keeps metals, dusts, plates and gems consistent across the pack. It has no quests in the pack's quest book, so there is no chapter to follow. This page walks through the first items worth making instead.[2]
In this pack the mod's tweaks are all switched on. Recipes are rewritten at load so modded inputs and outputs use its items (tweaks.tweak_recipes). Chest loot and block drops are swapped too (tweaks.tweak_loot_tables), and so are modded ores in worldgen (tweaks.tweak_worldgen). Vanilla materials are not touched. That is why you only ever need one version of each material.[2]
Per-mod swaps are listed in the unifier configs. For example, Neo Vitae's sulfur becomes Sulfur Dust, and Stellaris silicon becomes Silicon Gem.[3][4]
Step 1: Dusts
Start by grinding. The pack changes the Ender IO SAG Mill recipe for Copper Dust, so this is the in-pack way to make it with Ender IO.[5]
Changed by the pack, and it outputs Copper Dust.
Coal Dust also comes from the SAG Mill, and the pack changes that recipe as well. It gives coal dust plus a sulfur dust from the sulfur tag.[5]
Sag Milling (enderio)
Recipe id: enderio:sag_milling/coal
Changed by the pack: Coal Dust plus a sulfur dust.
Step 2: Steel
Steel is the next material to get. The pack changes the Energized Power alloy furnace recipe, so use it to make your first Steel Ingot.[5]
Alloy Furnace (energizedpower)
Recipe id: energizedpower:alloy_furnace/steel_ingot
Changed by the pack.
There is also an unpacking recipe, changed by the pack, that returns steel ingots in bulk.[5]
Crafting Shapeless
- Steel Block
Recipe id: cakesticklib:steel_ingot_unpack_9
Gives 9 Steel Ingots.
Step 3: Plates and wire
Once you have copper, you can make Copper Plate and Copper Wire. Both Energized Power recipes below are changed by the pack.[5]
Compressor (energizedpower)
Recipe id: energizedpower:compressing/copper_plate_from_compressing_copper_block
Gives 9 Copper Plates.
Metal Press (energizedpower)
Recipe id: energizedpower:metal_press/copper_wire
Gives 3 Copper Wire.
Step 4: Aluminum and casting
Aluminum has many routes, and the pack added most of them. One example: Aluminum Plate can be made with an FTB Industrial Contraptions rolling recipe the pack adds. A stonecutting recipe the pack adds then turns that plate into Aluminum Wire.[5]
Rolling (ftbic)
Recipe id: ftb:unification/ftbic/rolling/block_to_plate/aluminum
Added by the pack, and it outputs an Aluminum Plate.
Added by the pack, and it outputs Aluminum Wire.
If you prefer casting with Hephaestus Forge, the pack adds casting recipes for chromium. One recipe costs 90 units of molten chromium for a Chromium Ingot, and the other costs 810 for a Block of Chromium.[5]
Casting Table (hephaestus)
- 90× Molten Chromium
Recipe id: ftb:hephaestus_materials/casting/chromium/ingot
Added by the pack.
Unverified The full list of which modded item is replaced by which FTB Materials item is stored in config/ftbmaterials/unifier-db.json, and the sources here do not show it. Per-mod unifier files sit in config/ftbmaterials/unifier.
How does FTB Materials work?
6 parts
FTB Materials works differently from most mods in the pack. The sources here show no machine, multiblock or power system of its own. What they show is the glue: it makes every mod that adds copper dust, silver ingots or a titanium ore end up using one shared set of items. Once you see how that glue is configured, the rest of the pack's material handling makes a lot more sense.[2]
The tweak switches
The startup config has a switch for each place where the swapping happens: recipes, loot tables and worldgen. Each is set to true in this pack, and each leaves vanilla materials alone.[2]
- tweaks.tweak_recipes: while recipes load, modded inputs and outputs are swapped for their FTB Materials counterparts.[2]
- tweaks.tweak_loot_tables: chest loot and modded materials dropped by broken blocks are replaced by FTB Materials counterparts.[2]
- tweaks.tweak_worldgen: any modded ore that generates in the world is replaced by its FTB Materials counterpart.[2]
Unifier maps
The unifier files in config/ftbmaterials/unifier list, per mod, which of its items, fluids, tags or ore blocks should become something else. Not every target is an FTB Materials item. Some point at another mod's version, as the examples below show.[6][7]
- Silver from Ice and Fire (ingot, nugget, ore, deepslate ore, raw silver and the blocks) maps to the matching FTB Materials silver items.[8]
- Oritech gems such as copper, gold, iron, nickel, platinum and uranium map to FTB Materials shards, and its small dusts map to FTB Materials tiny dusts.[9]
- Stellaris titanium ore, deepslate titanium ore and titanium nugget map to FTB Materials titanium blocks and items, and its silicon maps to Silicon Gem.[4]
- Sulfur from NeoVitae and from CakeStickLib both map to Sulfur Dust.[3][10]
- Silicon blocks from Energized Power, Extended AE and the raw silicon block all collapse into Block of Silicon.[6][11][12]
- Experience fluids from Ender IO, Energized Power, Reliquary, Nautec, Sophisticated Core, Mob Flow Utilities and NeoVitae all map to the Just Dire Things XP fluid (source and flowing). This is the same idea applied to fluids, so you can pipe XP between machines from different mods.[3][6][13][14][15][16][17]
- The steam fluid from Colossal Reactors maps to Oritech's steam, still and flowing.[18]
- Some entries point away from FTB Materials: Energized Power's advanced alloy ingot maps to the FTB Industrial Contraptions advanced alloy, and Oritech and LTX biomass map to the Agritech: Evolved biomass.[6][7][9]
- The c: tags for adamantite, aeternium and aurichalcum (dusts, ingots, nuggets, plates, rods, gears, wires, storage blocks and the small and tiny dusts) resolve to FTB Armory items. Their ore, raw, chunk, clump, cluster, crystal, shard and dirty dust tags are on the unification blacklist.[2][19]
Unverified The full unification database, which holds the complete list of what gets swapped, is stored in config/ftbmaterials/unifier-db.json. The sources here do not show its contents, so only the smaller per-mod unifier files above are described.
Recipe rules
Recipes are rewritten by rule files in config/ftbmaterials/rules, one per mod, each keyed by recipe type. A rule lists the paths inside that recipe type's data (an input, an output id, a fluid id) and which lookup applies there: the item map, fluid map, item tag map, fluid tag map, or the combined item-or-tag map. This is how machine recipes from many mods end up speaking the same material language.[20][21][22]
- enderio:sag_milling rewrites the input and the output item of Ender IO sag milling.[20]
- ftbic:compressing, ftbic:canning and ftbic:separating rewrite item inputs and outputs for those FTB IC machines.[23]
- hephaestus:melting rewrites the melted fluid and the ingredient. The casting table and casting basin rules rewrite the fluid and the cast result.[21]
- The Colossal Reactors rules file covers the foundry, electric melter, casting table and casting factory, handling fluids, item inputs and outputs.[24]
- oritech:assembler rewrites the assembler's item inputs, items or tags.[22]
- LTX Industries has the largest rule set: assembling, chemical reacting, electro centrifuging, garden simulating, geo synthesis, grinding, material fusing and mixing.[25]
Anything not covered by an explicit rule can still be rewritten by fallback rules, unless it is blacklisted. Recipe ID blacklist entries are never fallback-tweaked, and they can be wildcarded, but a recipe with an explicit rule is not excluded by the blacklist. This pack blacklists, among others, Ender IO sag milling of clay and sand, Occultism crystallize recipes for apatite, cinnabar, diamond, emerald, fluorite, lapis, quartz, ruby, sapphire and sulfur, and several Occultism basic miner recipes. The recipe types cucumber:shaped_tag and occultism:spirit_trade are blacklisted as well. Both lists are in blacklists.recipe_id_blacklist and blacklists.recipe_type_blacklist.[2]
Items can also be kept out of the unification database. This pack excludes oritech:biosteel_ingot, stellaris:moon_stone_iron_ore and stellaris:moon_titanium_ore through blacklists.unification_blacklist_items.[2]
Ore and block drops
The ore loot tables follow one pattern. Take aluminum: with Silk Touch you get the ore block itself, otherwise you get Raw Aluminum, with Fortune using the standard ore drops bonus and explosions able to destroy some of the drops. The stone, deepslate, end and nether variants all work this way, and the antimony ores have the same layout.[26][27][28][29][30]
The storage blocks, such as the aluminum block and the raw aluminum block, drop themselves, as long as they survive an explosion.[31][32]
Machines producing FTB Materials items
Because of the unification, the pack adds a recipe for each machine type in its own ftb:unification set, so every grinder, pulverizer or macerator you own gives the same result. Cinnabar Gem from end ore is a good example: the pack adds recipes in the FTB IC macerator, the Oritech pulverizer and fragment forge, Occultism crushing, LTX grinding and Horse Powered grinding. The Occultism crushing recipe gives 4 Cinnabar Gem. The recipe dump does not list the inputs for these lines, so the ore itself is not confirmed here.[5]
The scale is big. The recipe dump counts 259 smelting, 252 blasting, 140 shapeless crafting and 136 shaped crafting recipes that produce FTB Materials items. It also counts 122 FTB IC macerating, 118 Energized Power pulverizer and 112 Oritech pulverizer recipes.[5]
Rolling (ftbic)
Recipe id: ftb:unification/ftbic/rolling/block_to_plate/aluminum
Pack-added FTB IC rolling recipe for the Aluminum Plate.
Pressing (ltxi)
Recipe id: ftb:unification/ltxi/pressing/block_to_plate/aluminum
The LTX Industries pressing route to the same Aluminum Plate, also added by the pack.
Smelting Crushed Ore from FTB IC into an Aluminum Ingot, a recipe the pack adds.
Casting Table (hephaestus)
Recipe id: ftb:hephaestus_materials/casting/netherite/nugget
Pack-added casting table recipe: 10 Molten Netherite cast into one Netherite Nugget.
Alloy Smelting (enderio)
Recipe id: colossal_reactors:enderio/alloy_smelting/stainless_steel_from_iron_chromium
An Ender IO alloy smelting recipe the pack changed; it makes 4 Stainless Steel Ingot.
The pack changed this AE2 smelting recipe so it gives the FTB Materials Silicon Gem. The blasting version is changed the same way.
Desh and Novite processing items
A pack startup script registers a processing ladder under the ftbmaterials namespace for both Desh and Novite: Desh Dust, Desh Dirty Dust, Desh Clump, Desh Chunk, Desh Shard and Desh Crystal, plus the same stages for Novite. The sources here do not show which machines move items between those stages.[33]
How do you progress through FTB Materials?
4 parts
FTB Materials adds the metals, dusts and gems that other mods in the pack process and build with. The sources I have for this pack don't give the mod a tier list of its own, so this section follows what the pack's recipes show: how raw material enters the pack, and how aluminum and the main alloys are processed step by step.[5]
Unverified The sources here do not show any quest-book chapter that places FTB Materials in a progression order. Check the pack's quest book for that. The steps below come from the recipe data only.
Stage 1: raw ore
Aluminum ore comes in stone, deepslate, nether and end variants. All four drop Raw Aluminum when mined normally, and Fortune boosts the amount. With Silk Touch you get the ore block itself instead.[26][27][28][29]
Ore blocks aren't the only way in. The pack changed the asteroid laser recipe from BBL Dimensional Resources. It lists raw aluminum, iridium, lead, nickel, platinum, silver, tin, titanium and uranium among its outputs.[5]
- Raw nickel can also come from the Oritech bedrock extractor recipe the pack changed for Raw Nickel.[5]
- The Energized Power filtration plant recipe for tin ore, changed by the pack, gives Raw Tin along with a stone pebble.[5]
- The Oritech fragment forge recipe for platinum, changed by the pack, gives Raw Platinum along with fluxite.[5]
Stage 2: the aluminum processing chain
Aluminum has the longest chain in the sources, with a separate item for each step: Aluminum Clump, Aluminum Chunk, Aluminum Shard, Aluminum Crystal and Aluminum Dust. The pack added recipes from several tech mods for these steps, so you can pick whichever machine line you already have.[5]
Refinery (oritech)
Recipe id: ftb:unification/oritech/refinery/rawsheol_to_clump/aluminum
The Oritech refinery makes aluminum clumps and also outputs lava.
Centrifuge (oritech)
Recipe id: ftb:unification/oritech/centrifuge/clump_to_shard/aluminum
The Oritech centrifuge turns a clump into a shard. The pack also added LTX Industries and fluid centrifuge versions.
Electro Centrifuging (ltxi)
Recipe id: ftb:unification/ltxi/electro_centrifuging/shard_to_crystal/aluminum
In the LTX Industries line, a shard goes through the electro centrifuge to become a crystal.
Stage 3: ingots and finished parts
The pack added this smelting recipe, which turns crushed ore into Aluminum Ingot.
From there, the pack added recipes for the finished forms. Rolling or pressing a block makes Aluminum Plate, and a stonecutting recipe turns a plate into Aluminum Wire. An extruding recipe makes Aluminum Rod from an ingot.[5]
Plate to wire is a stonecutter recipe.
If you run a smeltery, Hephaestus Forge can cast a Block of Aluminum from 810 units of molten aluminum. That recipe is the mod's own, not one the pack changed.[5]
Alloys and advanced materials
Steel Ingot has a pack-changed alloy furnace recipe in Energized Power. A shapeless recipe, also changed by the pack, unpacks 9 steel ingots.[5]
Alloy Furnace (energizedpower)
Recipe id: energizedpower:alloy_furnace/steel_ingot
Steel from the Energized Power alloy furnace, a recipe the pack changed.
Stainless Steel Ingot has two routes. The pack changed the Ender IO alloy smelting recipe so it makes 4 ingots. You can also cast an ingot from 90 units of molten stainless steel.[5]
Alloy Smelting (enderio)
Recipe id: colossal_reactors:enderio/alloy_smelting/stainless_steel_from_iron_chromium
The Ender IO alloy smelting route yields 4 ingots.
Chromium Ingot is cast from 90 units of molten chromium, and Block of Chromium from 810 units. Both casting recipes were added by the pack.[5]
A few other materials have their own routes. Electrum Ingot comes from an Oritech foundry recipe, and Bronze Dust from an alloy smelting recipe in FTB Industrial Contraptions. Both were added by the pack.[5]
Silicon Gem is made by several machines. Stellaris blending gives 3 per craft, and the pack also changed the AE2 smelting and blasting recipes and the FTB Industrial Contraptions separating recipe. Silicon Ingot has a changed arc smelting recipe in LTX Industries.[5]
How does FTB Materials work with other mods?
6 parts
FTB Materials mostly supplies the metals, gems and dusts, and a lot of other mods in the pack either make those items or turn them into something else. Everything below comes from the in-pack recipes that touch both sides.[5]
Hephaestus Forge: casting
Hephaestus Forge turns molten metal into FTB Materials items. Casting tables make ingots, nuggets, plates, rods and gears, and the casting basin makes storage blocks. Aluminum Ingot, Aluminum Gear and Aluminum Plate come from Molten Aluminum, and Block of Bronze, Block of Electrum and Block of Invar come from their matching molten metals.[5]
The pack adds its own casting recipes on top. They cover Chromium Ingot, Titanium Ingot, Stainless Steel Ingot, Brass Ingot, Steel Plate and Netherite Nugget, plus the gems Ruby Gem, Sapphire Gem and Dimensional Shard Gem. Stainless steel is cast from Molten Stainless Steel, an item from Colossal Reactors.[5]
Casting Table (hephaestus)
- 90× Molten Titanium
Recipe id: ftb:hephaestus_materials/casting/titanium/ingot
One of the casting table recipes the pack adds for FTB Materials metals.
FTB Industrial Contraptions: smelting
FTB Industrial Contraptions processing stages feed straight into FTB Materials ingots. The pack adds smelting recipes that turn Crushed Ore, Washed Ore and Refined Concentrate into Aluminum Ingot and Chromium Ingot. Iridium Ingot gets the same treatment from crushed ore and refined concentrate.[5]
Oritech: forge and centrifuge
Oritech produces a lot of FTB Materials items. Its fragment forge is a source of Iron Clump, Copper Clump, Gold Clump, Nickel Clump and Platinum Clump. The pack changed these recipes. Another changed forge recipe involves Uranium Dust and Small Plutonium Dust.[5]
Fragment Forge (oritech)
Recipe id: oritech:fragment_forge/raw/iron
Changed by the pack: one of the fragment forge clump recipes.
Fragment Forge (oritech)
Recipe id: oritech:fragment_forge/ore/platinum
Changed by the pack: raw platinum comes with Fluxite.
The fluid centrifuge recipes the pack adds in Oritech are another source of shards such as Aluminum Shard, Chromium Shard and Iridium Shard, and the ones listed here also give Mineral Slurry. A centrifuge recipe changed by the pack gives Platinum Shard and Fluxite.[5]
Centrifuge Fluid (oritech)
Recipe id: ftb:unification/oritech/centrifuge_fluid/clump_to_shard_acid/aluminum
Added by the pack: the aluminum shard centrifuge recipe.
Energized Power: filtration plant
The filtration plant in Energized Power gives Stone Pebble plus a raw ore. The pack adds filtration recipes for Raw Aluminum, Raw Chromium, Raw Iridium, Raw Lead, Raw Nickel and Raw Platinum, and it changes the one for Raw Tin.[5]
Filtration Plant (energizedpower)
Recipe id: ftb:unification/energizedpower/filtration_plant/raw_ore_filtration/aluminum
LTX Industries and Productive Bees
LTX Industries has recipes changed by the pack that involve Silicon Dust and Oxygen (electro centrifuging of flint, quartz and sand), and Sulfur Dust and Carbon Dust (grinding). The pack also adds recipes there for Copper Crystal and Titanium Chunk.[5]
Electro Centrifuging (ltxi)
Recipe id: ltxi:electro_centrifuging/electrolyze_sand
Changed by the pack: one of the electro centrifuging recipes.
Productive Bees centrifuge recipes, all changed by the pack, turn honeycombs into FTB Materials items alongside Wax. You can get Salt Dust, Cinnabar Gem, Chromium Nugget and Raw Titanium this way.[5]
Other connections
- Colossal Reactors: a pack-added reactor fuel recipe turns Uranium Ingot into Nuclear Waste.[5]
- BBL Dimensional Resources: the pack changed the asteroid laser recipe, which covers FTB Materials raw ores such as Raw Titanium, Raw Uranium and Raw Silver, plus Raw Boron. The recipe is shown below.[5]
- Just Dire Things: a goospread recipe changed by the pack turns Block of Charcoal into Raw Primal Coal.[5]
- Just Another Witchery Remake: a ritual recipe changed by the pack uses Cinnabar Gem.[5]
- FTB Armory: FTB Materials' own ore tags list the Armory ores for adamantite, aeternium and aurichalcum, so those ores sit in the same shared ore tags as the FTB Materials ores.[34][35][36][37]
Laser (dimresources)
Recipe id: dimresources:asteroid
Changed by the pack: the asteroid laser recipe.
Which FTB Materials config options matter?
4 parts
FTB Materials is the mod that makes the pack use one version of each material. It swaps modded materials for its own counterparts in recipes, loot and world generation. Most of what you will want to look at is in the startup config and the unifier files.[2]
The three tweak switches
Three switches in the startup config decide what gets swapped. This pack leaves all three on, which matches the mod default. Vanilla materials are not touched by any of them.[2]
- tweaks.tweak_recipes is true. Modded inputs and outputs in recipes use their FTB Materials counterparts when the recipe manager loads.[2]
- tweaks.tweak_loot_tables is true. Chest loot and modded materials dropped from broken blocks are replaced by their FTB Materials counterparts.[2]
- tweaks.tweak_worldgen is true. Modded generated ores are replaced by their FTB Materials counterparts.[2]
Blacklists the pack changed
Every blacklist in the mod defaults to an empty list. This pack fills most of them, so these are the values it changed from the default.[2]
- blacklists.recipe_id_blacklist holds recipes that fallback rules will never tweak. It lists the Ender IO sag milling recipes for clay and sand, some Occultism crushing recipes (charcoal dust, coal dust, obsidian dust), many Occultism crystallize recipes, and the Occultism basic miner recipes for antimony, bauxite, monazite, salt and tungsten.[2]
- blacklists.recipe_type_blacklist holds cucumber:shaped_tag and occultism:spirit_trade, so those recipe types are never tweaked by fallback rules.[2]
- blacklists.unification_blacklist_items keeps oritech:biosteel_ingot, stellaris:moon_stone_iron_ore and stellaris:moon_titanium_ore out of the unification database.[2]
- blacklists.unification_blacklist_item_tags excludes the chunks, clumps, clusters, crystals, dirty dusts, ores, raw materials and shards tags for adamantite, aeternium and aurichalcum. It also excludes their raw storage block tags.[2]
- blacklists.unification_blacklist_blocks is empty, the same as the default.[2]
Unifier mappings you will notice
The unifier files in the ftbmaterials config folder say which item, fluid or tag each mod's material is replaced with. Here are the ones you are most likely to run into.[2]
- Experience fluids from Ender IO, Reliquary, Nautec, Sophisticated Core, Mob Flow Utilities, Neo Vitae and Energized Power all map to the Just Dire Things XP fluid, both still and flowing where the file lists both. See fluids.enderio:fluid_xp_juice_still and fluids.reliquary:xp_still for two examples. Source: Just Dire Things.[3][6][13][14][15][16][17]
- Silicon blocks from Extended AE (items.extendedae:silicon_block), Energized Power and FTB Materials' own raw silicon block (items.ftbmaterials:silicon_raw_block) all become Block of Silicon.[6][11][12]
- Ice and Fire silver items and ores (for example items.iceandfire:silver_ingot) map to FTB Materials silver. Stellaris titanium ores and the titanium nugget map to FTB Materials titanium, and its silicon (ore_blocks.stellaris:silicon) becomes the FTB Materials silicon gem.[4][8]
- Oritech gems and small dusts map to FTB Materials shards and tiny dusts, for example items.oritech:copper_gem and items.oritech:small_copper_dust. Oritech biomass maps to Agritech: Evolved biomass, and the LTX Industries resinous biomass does too.[7][9]
- Red alloy from More Red (items.morered:red_alloy_ingot) and Energized Power's redstone alloy ingot both become Redstone Alloy Ingot. Advanced alloy from Cakestick Lib and Energized Power both become Advanced Alloy.[6][10][38]
- The Colossal Reactors steam fluids (fluids.colossal_reactors:gas_fluid_steam) map to the Oritech still and flowing steam. The adamantite, aeternium and aurichalcum item tags (ingots, plates, gears and more) map to FTB Armory items.[18][19]
Recipe rules
Explicit rules in the rules folder tell FTB Materials which fields of a machine's recipe to swap. For example, enderio:sag_milling rewrites the input (as an item or a tag) and the output item of Ender IO sag milling recipes. horsepowered:pressing does the same for pressing, including the fluid result. Rule files exist for a wide spread of mods, including AE2, AdvancedAE, FTB Industrial Contraptions, Hephaestus Forge, Occultism, Productive Bees, LTX Industries and Oritech.[20][21][22][23][25][39][40][41][42][43]
Unverified The full unification database is stored in config/ftbmaterials/unifier-db.json. The sources here do not show its contents, so which exact entries it holds is unverified.
