What is FTB Materials?

FTB Materials is part of the pack's mod list. This pack ships version 26.1.2.6 of it, and it has been in the pack since version 1.0.2 or earlier, so it is not a recent addition.[1]

How do you get started with FTB Materials?

5 parts

FTB Materials is not a mod you build a base around. In this pack it works in the background: it swaps the materials other mods use for its own versions, so the same metals and gems show up no matter which mod's machine made them.[2]

Three switches control this, and all three are on in the pack. tweaks.tweak_recipes makes modded recipe inputs and outputs use FTB Materials items. tweaks.tweak_loot_tables does the same for chest loot and block drops. tweaks.tweak_worldgen replaces modded generated ores. Vanilla materials are not affected by any of them.[2]

So your first step is simply to play and notice it. A silicon ore from Stellaris, for example, is mapped to Silicon Gem by ore_blocks.stellaris:silicon.[3]

Recipes worth trying first

The recipes below are ones the pack changed or added, so check them in the game rather than assuming the mod defaults. They go from raw dusts up to alloys.[4]

Dusts

Start with dusts. The pack changed the Ender IO sag milling recipe for copper so it gives Copper Dust.[4]

Copper DustChanged by the pack

Sag Milling (enderio)

    Recipe id: enderio:sag_milling/copper

A pack-changed sag milling recipe that outputs Copper Dust.

Coal ore is also sag milled in the pack. The changed recipe lists Coal Dust among its outputs.[4]

        • Steel Block

        Recipe id: cakesticklib:steel_ingot_unpack_9

        Gives 9 Steel Ingots.

        Plates and wire

Energized Power also handles copper shaping in the pack. Its compressor recipe makes 9 Copper Plate, and its metal press makes 3 Copper Wire.[4]

9× Copper PlateChanged by the pack

        Compressor (energizedpower)

          Recipe id: energizedpower:compressing/copper_plate_from_compressing_copper_block

Pack-changed compressor recipe, makes 9 Copper Plates.

3× Copper WireChanged by the pack

          Metal Press (energizedpower)

            Recipe id: energizedpower:metal_press/copper_wire

Pack-changed metal press recipe, makes 3 Copper Wire.

            Alloys and aluminum

For stainless steel, the pack changed an Ender IO alloy smelting recipe so it makes 4 Stainless Steel Ingot at a time.[4]

4× Stainless Steel IngotChanged by the pack

            Alloy Smelting (enderio)

Pack-changed alloy smelting recipe, makes 4 Stainless Steel Ingots.

Aluminum has many routes in the pack. One is a smelting recipe the pack added, which turns FTB Industrial Contraptions crushed ore into Aluminum Ingot.[4]

              Aluminum IngotAdded by the pack

              Smelting

              Recipe id: ftbic:refining/c/aluminum/smelting/crushed_ore

Pack-added smelting recipe that turns Crushed Ore into an Aluminum Ingot.

Unverified The full list of which modded items get swapped for FTB Materials items is kept in config/ftbmaterials/unifier-db.json. The sources here do not show its contents, so check that file or the items in game for the exact mappings.

              How does FTB Materials work?

              9 parts

Here is the thing to know up front: in this pack, the systems the sources show for FTB Materials are not machines you build. They are a unification layer. The mod swaps the materials other mods add (their ores, dusts, ingots, fluids) for its own versions, so every mod in the pack speaks the same material language. The machines you actually use come from other mods, and FTB Materials decides what goes into them and what comes out.[2]

              The master switches

The startup config has tweak options for recipes, loot tables and worldgen, and in this pack all of them are on. Each one only touches modded content, and vanilla is left alone.[2]

              • tweaks.tweak_recipes: while recipes load, modded inputs and outputs are rewritten to use FTB Materials counterparts. Vanilla materials are not affected.[2]
              • tweaks.tweak_loot_tables: loot found in chests, and modded materials dropped from broken blocks, are replaced by FTB Materials counterparts. Vanilla loot is not affected.[2]
              • tweaks.tweak_worldgen: any modded ore that generates is replaced by its FTB Materials counterpart. Vanilla ores are not affected.[2]
Tip: If a machine from another mod suddenly gives you an FTB Materials item, that is the recipe tweak at work. Check the FTB Materials item in your recipe viewer to find the processing chain it belongs to.[2]

Rules: which parts of a recipe get rewritten

Every machine type has its own recipe layout, so FTB Materials uses one rules file per mod. Each entry names a recipe type and lists the fields inside that recipe to rewrite, such as the input, the output item id or the fluid id. For example, enderio:sag_milling rewrites the input and the output item of Ender IO's SAG Mill recipes.[5]

Fluids are handled too. The Hephaestus melting rule rewrites both the input item and the fluid that comes out, and the casting table and casting basin rules rewrite the fluid and the resulting item.[6]

The pack has rules for many machine families. A few examples are FTB Industrial Contraptions, where ftbic:compressing covers compressing recipes, Energized Power's fluid transposer, and LTX Industries machines such as grinding, mixing and material fusing. Oritech's assembler and Occultism's crushing and crystallize recipes have rules as well.[7][8][9][10][11]

              Unifier maps: who becomes what

The unifier files say which foreign item or fluid is replaced by which pack-wide one. Some examples set by this pack:[12]

              • Oritech's copper, gold, iron, nickel, platinum and uranium gems become the FTB Materials shards for those metals, for example copper_shard. Its small dusts become FTB Materials tiny dusts.[12]
              • Experience fluids from Ender IO, Energized Power, NauTec 2, Reliquary, Sophisticated Core, Mob Flow Utilities and Neo Vitae all become the Just Dire Things XP fluid, so one XP fluid works everywhere.[13][14][15][16][17][18][19]
              • The steam fluid from Colossal Reactors maps to Oritech's steam, both still and flowing.[20]
              • Stellaris titanium ores, including the deepslate variant, map to the FTB Materials titanium ores, and Stellaris silicon maps to Silicon Gem.[3]
              • Ice and Fire silver ore, raw silver, ingots, nuggets and blocks all map to the FTB Materials silver versions.[21]

Unverified The full unification database, meaning the complete list of which item maps to which FTB Materials item, is stored in config/ftbmaterials/unifier-db.json. The sources here do not show its contents.

              Blacklists: what is left alone

The recipe ID blacklist lists recipes that the automatic fallback rules never touch. Recipes that have an explicit rule are not excluded by it. In this pack it names, among others, the Ender IO SAG Mill recipes for clay and sand, a number of Occultism crystallize recipes (for example apatite, cinnabar, diamond and ruby) and a few Occultism miner recipes (antimony, bauxite, monazite, salt, tungsten). See blacklists.recipe_id_blacklist.[2]

The recipe type blacklist skips cucumber:shaped_tag and occultism:spirit_trade (blacklists.recipe_type_blacklist). The item blacklist skips oritech:biosteel_ingot and the Stellaris moon stone iron ore and moon titanium ore (blacklists.unification_blacklist_items). The block blacklist is empty. The item tag blacklist holds the adamantite, aeternium and aurichalcum material tags, such as their ores, clumps, shards and crystals.[2]

Separately, the pack's companion unifier file points the adamantite, aeternium and aurichalcum dust, ingot, plate, rod, gear, wire and block tags at the matching FTB Armory items.[22]

              What ores drop

The ore blocks come in stone, deepslate, nether and end variants. Take aluminum: all of them drop the ore block itself when mined with Silk Touch. Otherwise they drop Raw Aluminum, with Fortune applied to the drop and explosion decay applied as well. The antimony ore loot tables shown follow the same pattern.[23][24][25][26][27][28]

Storage blocks, both normal and raw, simply drop themselves when broken, as the aluminum and antimony blocks show.[29][30][31][32]

              Example: the aluminum chain

The pack adds a full set of aluminum processing recipes across several tech mods. Here is how the chain looks, one machine at a time.[4]

Aluminum Clump, LavaAdded by the pack

              Refinery (oritech)

                Recipe id: ftb:unification/oritech/refinery/rawsheol_to_clump/aluminum

Added by the pack: an Oritech refinery recipe that makes an Aluminum Clump.

                Aluminum ShardAdded by the pack

                Centrifuge (oritech)

                  Recipe id: ftb:unification/oritech/centrifuge/clump_to_shard/aluminum

Added by the pack: the Oritech centrifuge turns the clump into an Aluminum Shard.

Aluminum Shard, Mineral SlurryAdded by the pack

The fluid centrifuge variant also makes an Aluminum Shard, with Mineral Slurry as a second output.

                    Aluminum IngotAdded by the pack

                    Smelting

                    Recipe id: ftbic:refining/c/aluminum/smelting/crushed_ore

Added by the pack: smelting FTB Industrial Contraptions crushed ore gives an Aluminum Ingot.

                    Aluminum PlateAdded by the pack

                    Rolling (ftbic)

                      Recipe id: ftb:unification/ftbic/rolling/block_to_plate/aluminum

Added by the pack: the FTB IC roller makes an Aluminum Plate.

                      Aluminum RodAdded by the pack

                      Extruding (ftbic)

                        Recipe id: ftb:unification/ftbic/extruding/ingot_to_rod/aluminum

Added by the pack: the FTB IC extruder makes an Aluminum Rod.

                        One material, many machines

The pack adds a Cinnabar Gem recipe for the end ore to every grinder-type machine it supports. That includes the FTB IC macerator, the Oritech pulverizer and fragment forge, Occultism crushing, LTX Industries grinding and Horse Powered grinding. Occultism crushing gives 4 gems, and the Horse Powered grinding recipe turns 2 gems into 4.[4]

The recipe dump counts a lot of these. There are 259 smelting recipes, 252 blasting recipes, 174 Oritech pulverizer recipes and 123 FTB IC macerating recipes that produce FTB Materials items, plus many more of other types.[4]

                        Netherite NuggetAdded by the pack

                        Casting Table (hephaestus)

                        Recipe id: ftb:hephaestus_materials/casting/netherite/nugget

Added by the pack: casting 10 Molten Netherite on a Hephaestus casting table gives a Netherite Nugget.

The pack also changed existing recipes so they output FTB Materials items. These include AE2's smelting and blasting of silicon into Silicon Gem, Ender IO's SAG Mill copper recipe into Copper Dust, and the Energized Power compressor making 9 Copper Plate from a copper block. The SAG Mill coal ore recipe now gives Coal Dust alongside coal, cobblestone and diamond.[4]

                        Extra items the pack registers

A startup script registers extra material lines under this mod's namespace: desh and novite. Each has a dust, dirty dust, clump, chunk, shard and crystal. The sources here do not show the recipes that use these items.[33]

                        Villager trades

The pack's villager trade script includes FTB Materials trades. One gives 2 Steel Ingot for an iron ingot, and another gives 4 Silicon Gem for a quartz.[34]

How do you progress through FTB Materials?

                        3 parts

FTB Materials adds the metals, dusts, gems and plates that other mods in the pack use. This pack has no single fixed ladder for it, so the progression below follows the in-pack recipes: you find raw materials, process them through intermediate stages, then turn them into ingots, plates and alloys. Aluminum is the clearest example of the full chain.[4]

                        Step 1: Raw materials

Aluminum ore generates in stone, deepslate, Nether and End variants. Mine one with Silk Touch and you get the ore block itself. Without it, the ore drops Raw Aluminum, and Fortune increases the amount using the standard ore drops formula.[23][24][25][26]

Mining is not the only route. An Oritech bedrock extractor recipe also produces Raw Aluminum. The pack changes the BBL Dimensional Resources asteroid laser recipe so it outputs a long list of raws: aluminum, iridium, lead, nickel, platinum, silver, tin, titanium and uranium from this mod, plus boron, coal, raw copper, raw gold, raw iron and redstone.[4]

Other machines give raws too. The pack changes the Energized Power filtration plant recipe for Raw Tin, which also gives a stone pebble. It also changes the Oritech fragment forge recipe that makes Raw Platinum along with fluxite.[4]

Step 2: The aluminum processing chain

The pack adds recipes for several intermediate stages, and different tech mods cover them. The recipe ids name the stages as clump, chunk, shard, crystal and dust.[4]

                        Aluminum IngotAdded by the pack

                        Smelting

                        Recipe id: ftbic:refining/c/aluminum/smelting/crushed_ore

The pack-added smelting step that ends in an Aluminum Ingot.

From the ingot stage, the pack adds recipes for Aluminum Plate (rolling in FTB Industrial Contraptions and pressing in LTX Industries) and Aluminum Rod (FTBIC extruding). Aluminum Wire comes from a stonecutting recipe.[4]

Step 3: Alloys and molten metals

Steel and stainless steel are the main alloy steps. The pack changes the Energized Power alloy furnace recipe for Steel Ingot.[4]

                        Steel IngotChanged by the pack

                        Alloy Furnace (energizedpower)

                          Recipe id: energizedpower:alloy_furnace/steel_ingot

Pack-changed alloy furnace recipe for Steel Ingot.

Stainless Steel Ingot has an Ender IO alloy smelting recipe that the pack changes, and it makes 4 ingots per craft.[4]

4× Stainless Steel IngotChanged by the pack

                          Alloy Smelting (enderio)

                            Recipe id: colossal_reactors:enderio/alloy_smelting/stainless_steel_from_iron_chromium

Pack-changed alloy smelting recipe that yields 4 Stainless Steel Ingots.

If you use Hephaestus Forge, the pack adds casting recipes for chromium and stainless steel. An ingot takes 90 units of the molten metal and a block takes 810. Molten Netherite casts Netherite Nugget at 10 units per nugget.[4]

Stainless Steel IngotAdded by the pack

                            Casting Table (hephaestus)

                            Recipe id: ftb:hephaestus_materials/casting/stainless_steel/ingot

Casting table: 90 units of molten stainless steel per ingot.

                            Chromium IngotAdded by the pack

                            Casting Table (hephaestus)

                            • 90× Molten Chromium

                            Recipe id: ftb:hephaestus_materials/casting/chromium/ingot

Casting table: 90 units of molten chromium per ingot.

Smaller alloy and material steps also exist. Electrum Ingot has an Oritech foundry recipe, Bronze Dust has an FTBIC alloy smelting recipe, and 9 steel ingots come from one unpack recipe. Silicon Ingot comes from an LTX Industries arc smelting recipe the pack changes.[4]

Tip: Most materials can be made by many different machines. Cinnabar Gem, for example, has pack-added recipes in Oritech, FTBIC, Occultism, LTX Industries and Horse Powered. The Occultism crushing recipe makes 4 gems, and the Horse Powered grinding recipe turns 2 gems into 4. Use whichever mod you already have set up.[4]

How does FTB Materials work with other mods?

                            5 parts

FTB Materials supplies the metals, gems and ores, and a lot of other mods in the pack either make them or feed on them. Everything below comes from in-pack recipes and tag data.[4]

                            Hephaestus Forge casting

Hephaestus Forge has the most recipes touching this mod. Its own compat recipes cast Aluminum Ingot, Aluminum Gear, Stainless Steel Plate, Ruby Gem, Sapphire Gem and Dimensional Shard Gem on a casting table. Blocks of aluminum, brass, bronze, ruby, sapphire, dimensional shard and stainless steel come from a casting basin.[4]

The pack adds its own casting recipes on top. They cover chromium, titanium, ruby, sapphire, dimensional shard and stainless steel, plus Steel Plate and Netherite Nugget. The molten stainless steel in the stainless steel recipes is the fluid from Colossal Reactors.[4]

                            Titanium IngotAdded by the pack

                            Casting Table (hephaestus)

                            • 90× Molten Titanium

                            Recipe id: ftb:hephaestus_materials/casting/titanium/ingot

Added by the pack: titanium ingots are cast from molten titanium.

                            Netherite NuggetAdded by the pack

                            Casting Table (hephaestus)

                            Recipe id: ftb:hephaestus_materials/casting/netherite/nugget

Added by the pack: netherite nuggets are cast from molten netherite.

                            Oritech

Oritech connects to FTB Materials in two ways. Its fluid centrifuge recipes, added by the pack, produce shards such as Aluminum Shard, Chromium Shard, Desh Shard and Iridium Shard, and each also gives Mineral Slurry.[4]

The pack also changed Oritech's fragment forge recipes. They give FTB Materials clumps for copper, gold, iron, nickel and platinum, alongside Oritech's small clumps. The platinum fragment forge recipes also give Fluxite, and so does the changed platinum centrifuge recipe that makes Platinum Shard.[4]

                            Machines and ore processing

                            Reactors, lasers and other mods

                            FTB Armory ores

The FTB Materials ore tags also list ores from FTB Armory: adamantite (stone and deepslate variants), aeternium (nether) and aurichalcum (end).[35][36][37][38]

                            Where this guide comes from

Written from what FTB Evolution 2 itself ships: its files and recipes, the in-game guidebooks and the mods' own pages. Every statement links to the source it came from, and the numbers are checked against the pack before publishing.
