What is Just Another Witchery Remake?

2 parts

Just Another Witchery Remake is a ground-up remake of the old Witchery mod. It aims to bring over everything from the original with fresh textures and content. The authors call it a 1:0.9 remake rather than a 1:1 copy, so most things will feel familiar.[1]

This pack ships version 0.5.13.1 for Minecraft 26.1.2.[2]

What to expect

The mod started as a Modfest 2024 / SpookyJam 2024 project. It was built to be datapack-friendly, with data-driven rituals and recipes, command execution support and modpack-centric design choices. Since the 0.5 update, rituals can handle multiple events in parallel or in sequence.[1]

Soul magic and lichdom are no longer part of the base mod. They moved to the Forbidden Magic addon.[1]

Watch out: The project page itself says the mod has little content for the average player and is prone to bugs, because it was made in about a month. Expect rough edges.[1]

The in-game guidebook

The mod includes its own guidebook, organised into general, brewing and brazier groups, plus entries for lycanthropy and the spirit world.[3][4][5][6][7]

  • General: entries for the altar, the cauldron, the distillery and the coven contract.[8][9][10][11]
  • Brewing: entries for the cauldron, brews, infusions, the crystal ball and flying ointment.[6][12][13][14][15]
  • Brazier: entries for the brazier, the censer and several summoning rituals, such as banshee and poltergeist.[5][16][17][18]

How do you get started with Just Another Witchery Remake?

5 parts

Just Another Witchery Remake gives you a Cauldron, a Witches Oven and a Distillery, and your first hours are about getting those three working. The steps below follow the recipes this pack actually ships.[19]

Step 1: Make a Jar and use the oven

Everything starts with the Jar. In this pack it is a smelting recipe.[20]

JarMod recipe

Smelting

    Recipe id: witchery:jar

    The Jar comes from smelting.

Put a Jar in the Witches Oven and it comes out as Breath of the Goddess or Exhale of the Horned One, and you also get Wood Ash. Both are worth making early, because they show up later as ingredients in cauldron recipes.[20]

    Wood AshMod recipe

    Oven (witchery)

    Recipe id: witchery:oven_cooking/breath_of_the_goddess

A Jar in the oven gives Breath of the Goddess and Wood Ash.

    Wood AshMod recipe

    Oven (witchery)

    Recipe id: witchery:oven_cooking/exhale_of_the_horned_one

The same Jar can give Exhale of the Horned One instead.

Step 2: Get your plants going

The cauldron recipes lean on the mod's plants: Belladonna Flower, Mandrake Root, Water Artichoke Globe and the Icy Needle from snowbell. Grab seeds such as Belladonna Seeds and Mandrake Seeds and start farming them early.[20]

This pack also lets machines grow them for you. Energized Power has a plant growth chamber recipe that turns water into belladonna and its seeds. FTB Industrial Contraptions has hydroponic growth recipes, and LTX Industries has garden simulating recipes for belladonna, mandrake and snowbell. These recipes were added by the pack.[20]

    Plant Growth Chamber (energizedpower)

    Recipe id: energizedpower:growing/witchery/belladonna_from_growing_belladonna_seeds

Added by the pack: water in, Belladonna Flower and seeds out.

Step 3: Distil Oil of Vitriol

The Distillery gives you Oil of Vitriol along with Gypsum. You need Oil of Vitriol for the first cauldron brews below, so set the Distillery up before you try them.[20]

    Distilling (witchery)

      Recipe id: witchery:distilling/oil_of_vitriol_gypsum

The Distillery recipe for Oil of Vitriol and Gypsum.

Step 4: Brew your first potions

With Oil of Vitriol and your plants ready, try the cauldron. Brew of Erosion weathers stone and soil, and Brew of Ink blinds what it hits. Both use the Belladonna Flower and Oil of Vitriol you made in the steps above.[19][20]

      Brew of InkMod recipe

      Cauldron Brewing (witchery)

      Recipe id: witchery:cauldron_brewing/brew_of_ink

      Step 5: Upgrade your chalk

Once the cauldron is running, you can upgrade Ritual Chalk in it. Golden Ritual Chalk is the first upgrade to aim for, and Infernal Chalk and Binding Chalk come from the cauldron too. All three recipes start from Ritual Chalk.[19][20]

      Cauldron Crafting (witchery)

      Recipe id: witchery:cauldron_crafting/golden_chalk

Golden Ritual Chalk is cooked in the cauldron.

How does Just Another Witchery Remake work?

      5 parts

Here's the honest picture of how Witchery's machines work in this pack: the sources I have show the recipe types, the block families and the config switches, but they don't spell out step-by-step operating instructions. So this section covers what is confirmed. The in-game guidebook is where the mod explains how each station is used.[19][20][21]

The stations and what they make

Witchery has its own recipe types for its stations. The pack's recipe list shows four: cauldron brewing, cauldron crafting, oven cooking and distilling. Each one is a separate kind of recipe, so a recipe for one station never shows up in another.[20]

The block list also shows a Cauldron, an Altar, a Distillery, a Sacrificial Circle and a Crystal Ball. The Cauldron and the Witches Oven each come in copper variants at several weathering stages, plus waxed versions of each. Fume extensions exist for the ovens too. Exactly how the multi-part blocks fit together isn't in the sources here, so check the guidebook entries for the cauldron, oven, distillery and fume extension.[19]

Automation: farming Belladonna with other mods

The LTX Industries garden simulating recipe.

              Taglocks in this pack

The pack runs its own script that changes how the taglock item binds to a creature. You use it with your main hand, on a living target, and only when you are holding exactly one unfilled taglock. If the binding works, the taglock is stamped with the current game time. If it fails, the taglock gets a cooldown value of 100 and the interaction is cancelled.[22]

Mechanics switches in the pack config

These are the values in the pack's Witchery config file that change how the systems behave.[21]

The mod is built to be datapack-friendly, with data-driven rituals and recipes, which is why the pack can add and change recipes the way it does.[1]

How do you progress through Just Another Witchery Remake?

              5 parts

There is no quest chain to follow for Just Another Witchery Remake in this pack, so the progression below is read from the in-pack recipes instead. Follow the ingredient chain from the cheap oven products up to the late cauldron and distilling recipes. The mod's in-game guidebook is split into general, brewing and brazier entries, which is a handy second map once you have the first few items.[5][6][7][20]

Unverified The sources here do not show any quest that involves this mod, so the order the pack's quest book expects you to take it in is not confirmed. The steps below follow recipe dependencies only.

Step 1: Jars and the oven

Everything starts with the Jar, which is a smelting recipe. The oven recipes in this pack then give you Breath of the Goddess, Exhale of the Horned One and Foul Fume, each with Wood Ash as a by-product.[20]

              JarMod recipe

              Smelting

                Recipe id: witchery:jar

The Jar is smelted rather than crafted.

                Wood AshMod recipe

                Oven (witchery)

                Recipe id: witchery:oven_cooking/breath_of_the_goddess

Oven recipe: a Jar turns into Breath of the Goddess and Wood Ash.

                Step 2: Mutandis and chalks

Cauldron crafting is the next tier. Mutandis comes out four at a time, and Mutandis Extremis is built on top of it.[20]

                4× MutandisMod recipe

                Cauldron Crafting (witchery)

                Recipe id: witchery:cauldron_crafting/mutandis

                One craft makes 4 Mutandis.

                Cauldron Crafting (witchery)

                Recipe id: witchery:cauldron_crafting/mutandis_extremis

The cauldron also turns Ritual Chalk into Golden Ritual Chalk, Infernal Chalk and Binding Chalk. The Binding Chalk recipe gives the Eternal Catalyst back.[20]

                Cauldron Crafting (witchery)

                Recipe id: witchery:cauldron_crafting/golden_chalk

                Cauldron Crafting (witchery)

                Recipe id: witchery:cauldron_crafting/binding_chalk

The Eternal Catalyst is returned alongside the chalk.

                Infernal ChalkMod recipe

                Cauldron Crafting (witchery)

                Recipe id: witchery:cauldron_crafting/infernal_chalk

                Step 3: Distilling

The distilling recipes cover items such as Demons Blood, Refined Evil, Oil of Vitriol, Ender Dew, Phantom Vapor and Tear of the Goddess. Refined Evil can be made two ways, and these feed the later cauldron recipes.[20]

                Distilling (witchery)

                  Recipe id: witchery:distilling/refined_evil

                  Distilling (witchery)

                    Recipe id: witchery:distilling/refined_evil_from_ghast

Step 4: Brews and late-game cauldron recipes

The cauldron brewing recipes are where the earlier items pay off. Brew of Erosion, Brew of Last Stand and Brew of Oblivion all build on items from the earlier steps, such as Oil of Vitriol, Mutandis Extremis and Ender Dew. Drop of Luck is a cauldron crafting recipe that also draws on the earlier tiers.[20]

                    Recipe id: witchery:cauldron_crafting/drop_of_luck

                    Farming the herbs with machines

The pack adds machine recipes for growing the mod's plants, so you do not have to farm them by hand forever. Plant growth chamber recipes from Energized Power yield Belladonna Flower, Mandrake Root, Water Artichoke Globe, Wolfsbane and Wormwood together with their seeds, and the Snowbell recipe yields Icy Needle. FTB Industrial Contraptions has matching hydroponic growth recipes, and LTX Industries has garden simulating recipes for the same plants.[20]

Mandrake Root, Mandrake SeedsAdded by the pack

                    Plant Growth Chamber (energizedpower)

                    Recipe id: energizedpower:growing/witchery/mandrake_from_growing_mandrake_seeds

Example: the plant growth chamber recipe for Mandrake.

Tip: Mandrake Root shows up in the Mutandis, Golden Ritual Chalk and Drop of Luck recipes, so automating it early saves you a lot of trips.[20]

How does Just Another Witchery Remake work with other mods?

                    4 parts

Just Another Witchery Remake ties into several other mods in this pack through its cauldron and ritual recipes. The pack's quest sources don't show any quests for this mod, so everything below comes from the in-pack recipes.[20]

Rune Plate: Ars Magica and Roots Classic

The pack adds its own Witchery cauldron crafting recipe for Rune Plate. It mixes items from Ars Magica: Legacy and Roots Classic with Witchery items, and it makes 2 Rune Plates per craft. This is a pack recipe, not something the mod ships with.[20]

2× Rune PlateAdded by the pack

                    Cauldron Crafting (witchery)

                    Recipe id: ftb:feed_the_beast/rune_plate

Brewed in the Witchery cauldron, and added by the pack.

                    Cinnabar ritual: FTB Materials

The Blocks Below ritual is one the pack changed. It uses the Cinnabar Gem from FTB Materials alongside Witchery items and a couple of vanilla ones, so you need the cinnabar from that mod to perform it.[20]

                    Ritual (witchery)

                    Recipe id: witchery:ritual/blocks_below_cinnabar

Pack-changed ritual, so don't rely on the mod's default version.

                    Rite of Bloodbinding: Neo Vitae

The Rite of Bloodbinding reaches into Neo Vitae. It asks for a Blood Pearl and a Weak Blood Shard, together with Witchery items such as the Bloodstone Pendant and the Necromantic Stone. The sources list this as the mod's own recipe, with no pack change.[20]

                    Recipe id: witchery:ritual/rite_of_bloodbinding

                    Forbidden Magic addon

Soul magic and lichdom were moved out of the main mod into the Forbidden Magic addon, which this pack includes as JAWR: Forbidden Magic. Its recipes run on the Witchery cauldron and ritual systems, and they use Witchery ingredients mixed with a few vanilla items.[1][20]

                    Ritual (witchery)

The gold ingot version of the phylactery ritual.

The lapis lazuli version of the phylactery ritual.

Which Just Another Witchery Remake config options matter?

                    4 parts

Everything here lives in config/witchery-common.toml, the common config for Just Another Witchery Remake. Below is how this pack sets the options you are most likely to run into, grouped by what they affect.[21]

                    Vampires and hunters

                    Werewolves and curses

                    Villages

                    • enableVillageWalls is true, so walled villages generate a defensive wall. The special witchery buildings still generate in those villages even if you disable it.[21]
                    • enableVillageWallTerrainConforming is false. Each wall piece samples the ground height at its own position, with no clamping against its neighbors. Turned on, each piece's height would be clamped to within 4 blocks of its neighbor to avoid drops into caves or holes.[21]

                    Tools and utility

                    • maxVinSize is 81. That is the maximum number of blocks in a vein to mine with Hag's ring.[21]
                    • mutandisBlacklist is empty, so no blocks are protected from Mutandis and Mutandis Extremis. Add registry names to it, for example minecraft:oak_sapling, and those blocks will never mutate. The item is also not consumed when used on them.[21]
                    • requireGhostOfLightInfusion is false, so you do not need the Ghost of the Light infusion to teleport through mirrors. If it were enabled, only players with that infusion could.[21]
                    • enableCreativeTabBanners is true, so the Witchery creative tab shows category banners. When disabled, items show as a flat grid without banner headers or spacer slots.[21]

What changed in Just Another Witchery Remake between versions?

                    4 parts

FTB Evolution 2 1.1.0 ships Just Another Witchery Remake version 0.5.13.1 for Minecraft 26.1.2. The mod was already in the pack in 1.0.2 or earlier. The changelogs below are the mod's own, for the two most recent versions.[2]

                    0.5.13.1

This is the version in your pack. It is a small hotfix that closes an exploit involving the vampire bone needle.[2][23]

                    0.5.13: additions

                    • Dispensers now work with Witchery brews and potions.[24]
                    • Garlic now has a loot table (it was missing before).[24]
                    • There is a new config option for vampire immortality.[24]
                    • There is a new config option for vampire sun damage protection in dimensions.[24]
                    • The Sacrifice ritual now supports entity tags and either/or entities.[24]
                    • The remove curse ritual can now clear vampirism and lycanthropy.[24]

                    0.5.13: changes

                    • Village structure spawning was tweaked.[24]
                    • The quest text for the vampire step from level 2 to 3 was made clearer.[24]

                    0.5.13: fixes

                    • Poppets were tweaked to hopefully fix the poppet disconnect problem.[24]
                    • Arthana no longer disappears when the world reloads.[24]
                    • The owl was fixed.[24]
                    • Missing language entries for advancements were added.[24]
                    • Baby animals now have a blood pool.[24]
                    • Vampire food now supports tags.[24]
                    • Players were sometimes kicked when going to the spirit world. That is fixed.[24]
Tip: If you play as a vampire, the two new 0.5.13 config options for immortality and sun damage protection in dimensions are worth a look when you tune your world.[24]
