What is TerraFirmaCraft?
1 part
TerraFirmaCraft is the survival overhaul at the heart of this pack, and the pack ships version 2.2.24. You start with almost nothing: the first things you can pick up are sticks, twigs and loose rocks lying on the ground. Once you have a few rocks and sticks, you knap them into your first tools. The built-in guide is aimed at getting you through the stone age to your first pickaxe.[1][2][3]
Survival gets deeper too. You manage thirst as well as hunger, and there are five nutrients (Fruit, Vegetables, Protein, Grain and Dairy). A well-balanced diet raises your maximum health, while poor nutrition lowers it. Food also rots, so you will want to learn preservation early.[4]
Metal works differently from vanilla. Small ore pieces on the ground are only worth 10 mB of metal each, but they also hint at a bigger vein nearby. You melt ore in a vessel inside a pit kiln, then pour it into a fired mold. You need at least 100 mB of a castable metal such as copper to do this. Fire comes first, though: a Firestarter lights your firepit.[5][6]
Where it fits in the pack's progression
The pack builds a quest chapter around this mod, and it follows the TerraFirmaCraft tech tree from the stone age up through the steels. Here is the path the quests lay out:[7]
- Gather supplies and clay molds. The quest "{gravitas.quest.caveman.straw}" quest asks for 32 Straw. Then you make unfired molds, including the Unfired Pickaxe Head Mold and the Unfired Ingot Mold, and fire them.[7]
- Make your first copper tools. The quest "{gravitas.quest.caveman.copper_tool}" quest wants a Copper Pickaxe Head and a Copper Prospector's Pick Head. Copper saw and chisel quests follow.[7]
- Move on to bronze. After a Copper Anvil, the chapter asks for Bismuth Bronze Ingot, Bronze Ingot and Black Bronze Ingot.[7]
- Smelt iron. You build a Bloomery, work through the Raw Iron Bloom and Refined Iron Bloom stages, and end up with wrought iron and a Wrought Iron Anvil.[7]
- Reach steel. The Blast Furnace leads to Pig Iron Ingot, High Carbon Steel Ingot and Steel Ingot. After that come the Black Steel Anvil, Weak Blue Steel Ingot and Weak Red Steel Ingot.[7]
How do you get started with TerraFirmaCraft?
5 parts
Welcome to the stone age! The in-game guide frames this start as surviving long enough to get your first pickaxe, and that's the goal of this section. The order below follows the guide and the pack's quest chapter.[2][7]
Step one: gather and knap
The first things you can pick up are sticks, twigs and loose rocks lying on the ground. You can also get sticks by breaking leaves with your fist. Hold at least two rocks and right click in the air to open the knapping interface, then remove squares until the pattern matches the item you want.[3]
Make a stone knife first. It harvests Straw from plants, and you'll need plenty. A pit kiln takes eight pieces, and the pack's straw quest asks you to collect 32.[3][7][8]
Once you have a knife, you can knap other heads, such as axe and hammer heads, and assemble them into tools with a stick or twig.[3]
Step two: make fire
Craft a Firestarter from two sticks. Hold it down on the ground and, after a moment, smoke and then fire appear. It can take a couple of tries. You need it for the firepit, and it can also light the pit kiln.[6][8]
Step three: find clay and knap molds
Clay is usually hidden under grass. In areas with at least 175mm annual rainfall it grows in patches, and smaller deposits sit near rivers, lakes and ponds. Athyrium Fern, Canna, Goldenrod, Pampas Grass, Perovskia and Water Canna all hint that clay is nearby.[9]
You knap clay with five pieces in your hand. Unlike rock, you can close the interface, reshape the clay and try again after a mistake. Molds are what hold molten metal, and the Unfired Ingot Mold is the simplest one. The pack's molds quest asks for these:[7][9]
- Unfired Pickaxe Head Mold and Unfired Propick Head Mold for your first digging and prospecting tools.[7]
- Unfired Saw Blade Mold and Unfired Hammer Head Mold, plus the ingot mold.[7]
- Unfired Vessel and Unfired Large Vessel for storage. Quest "{gravitas.quest.caveman.important_molds}" quest covers the whole set.[7]
Step four: fire everything in a pit kiln
Clay items only become usable once fired. Ceramic needs 1200 °C, and a pit kiln heats its contents up to 1400 °C over about eight hours.[8][9]
- Place up to four items in a 1x1 hole.[8]
- Use eight Straw on the pit kiln until the items are covered.[8]
- Use eight Logs on it until it is full.[8]
- Light the top on fire. It then burns for eight hours.[8]
Quest "{gravitas.quest.caveman.fire}" quest asks for firestarters and straw alongside the first molds, and quest "{gravitas.quest.caveman.fired_mold}" quest checks that you have fired versions of the molds and vessels.[7]
Step five: cast your first copper tools
Look for small ore pieces on the ground. Besides being a bit of metal, they show that a bigger vein is nearby. Small ores give only 10 mB each, and casting needs at least 100 mB of copper in total. The pack's copper quest asks for Small Malachite, one of the copper ores.[5][7]
- Put the ores in a small vessel and heat it in a pit kiln until the metal is molten.[5]
- Take the vessel out and right click to open the casting interface.[5]
- Put an empty fired mold in the center slot. It fills while the vessel stays liquid, and if the vessel solidifies you can reheat it in another pit kiln.[5]
- Let the mold cool, then extract the tool head and attach it to a stick.[5]
Your first targets are a Copper Pickaxe Head and a Copper Prospector's Pick Head, which is quest "{gravitas.quest.caveman.copper_tool}" quest. After that, the saw quest "{gravitas.quest.caveman.saw_blade}" quest asks for a Copper Saw Blade and a Copper Saw. The guide says you need a saw for advanced wooden components such as the workbench.[7][9]
How does TerraFirmaCraft work?
9 parts
TerraFirmaCraft's machines are built around heat, fluids and careful item handling, and most of them are blocks you build, light and tend by hand. Here is how the main systems work and which limits this pack's config sets.[6][8][10]
Heating: firepit, pit kiln and bellows
The firepit has four fuel slots on the left and a gauge for its temperature. Logs, Peat and Stick Bundles can be loaded as fuel. You put fuel in the topmost slot, but it burns from the bottommost slot. Add a Wrought Iron Grill and the firepit becomes a grill. Add a Ceramic Pot and it becomes a pot. Impure fuels make the fire smokier and don't get hot enough for much cooking.[6]
A bellows pushes air into a device directly in front of it, or in front and one block down. That raises the maximum temperature for a short time, but the device burns through fuel faster.[11]
The pit kiln is your first real heating machine. You place up to four items in a 1x1 hole, cover them with eight Straw, fill it with eight Logs and light the top. It burns for about eight hours and heats its contents up to 1400 °C. This pack's config matches that: blocks.pitKiln.pitKilnTemperature1 is 1,400 and blocks.pitKiln.pitKilnTicks is 8,000 ticks, which is eight hours at 1,000 ticks per hour.[8][12]
Casting and alloys
Metal is measured in mB. Small surface ores give only 10 mB each, and casting needs at least 100 mB of a castable metal. You put the ores in a Small Vessel, heat it in a pit kiln, then take it out and open the casting interface. Your fired mold goes in the center slot and fills while the vessel stays liquid. If the vessel solidifies, you can reheat it in another pit kiln.[5]
Clay items must be fired before use, and ceramic needs 1200 °C. A Jug holds 100 mB of fluid at a time.[9]
A Small Vessel can also make alloys if you load the ore pieces in the right ratio. Bronze needs 88 to 92% Copper and 8 to 12% Tin. Bismuth Bronze needs 20 to 30% Zinc, 50 to 65% Copper and 10 to 20% Bismuth. Black Bronze needs 50 to 70% Copper, 10 to 25% Silver and 10 to 25% Gold.[13]
Anvils: working and welding
Anvils do two jobs. Working shapes one piece of metal into another, and welding fuses two pieces into one. An anvil can work metals of its own tier and weld metals one tier higher. The tiers run from Tier 0 for the stone anvil, then Copper at I, Bismuth Bronze, Black Bronze and Bronze at II, Wrought Iron at III, Steel at IV, Black Steel at V, and Red and Blue Steel at VI.[14]
When working, you choose a plan, then line up the green progress pointer with the red target using the action buttons. You also have to satisfy the rules shown at the top, and the metal must be hot enough to show "Can Work". Overworking the item loses the ingot. This pack sets blocks.anvil.anvilAcceptableWorkRange to 0, so your result must be pixel-perfect.[12][14]
Welding needs both items hot enough ("Can Weld"), at least one Flux in the anvil, and a hit from any Hammer. A rock anvil is made by right-clicking a raw rock block with a hammer. It is Tier 0 and can only weld Tier I ingots.[14][15]
Barrels: fluids and item processing
A barrel holds items in its central slot and fluid in its tank. In this pack the tank holds up to 10,000 mB, set by blocks.barrel.barrelCapacity. You fill or empty it with buckets or jugs in the top left slot. Sealing a barrel lets you break it without losing its contents, and it is required for some recipes. Sealing also ejects any items that aren't in the center slot.[10][12]
Barrel recipes need the right ratio of fluid to items. Any excess is lost. Limewater takes one Flux per 500 mB of Water. Milk Vinegar and Brine are made by adding Vinegar at a 9:1 ratio. Barrels also cool hot items in Water, Olive Oil or Salt Water, and they dye and bleach items.[10]
Sideways barrels show their sealed state with the tap. If the tap points sideways, the barrel is sealed. Unsealed ones drain automatically into open barrels or other fluid containers below the tap, as long as the block the tap extends into is free air.[10]
Blast furnace
The blast furnace is a multiblock used to make Steel. You build a chimney from Fire Bricks lined with Wrought Iron Sheets, or stronger metal sheets such as Steel. Each layer needs four Fire Bricks and twelve Wrought Iron Sheets, and you can stack up to five. Each layer lets the furnace hold four more ore items.[16]
You drop items in through the top of the chimney. For steel, that means an equal number of iron ores (or anything that melts into Cast Iron) and Flux, plus Charcoal as fuel, which is consumed as it works. The top right slot of the interface must hold a Tuyere, which you smith on an Anvil and which is needed to reach steel-smelting temperatures.[16]
The pack's config matches the guide. blocks.blastFurnace.blastFurnaceMaxChimneyHeight is 5 and blocks.blastFurnace.blastFurnaceCapacity is 4 items per level. The output tank holds 10,000 mB, set by blocks.blastFurnace.blastFurnaceFluidCapacity. blocks.blastFurnace.blastFurnaceFuelConsumptionMultiplier is 4, so it burns fuel quickly.[12][16]
Bloomery, crucible and other capacities
The bloomery is also a chimney multiblock. The pack lets it hold 8 items per level (blocks.bloomery.bloomeryCapacity) and be built up to 3 levels (blocks.bloomery.bloomeryMaxChimneyHeight).[12]
The crucible's tank holds 4,000 mB (blocks.crucible.crucibleCapacity). Fluid containers empty into it at 1 mB every 4 ticks (blocks.crucible.cruciblePouringRate). A crucible with contents counts towards overburdening, like Anvils and Sealed Barrels.[12][17]
Lamps hold 250 mB of fuel (blocks.lamp.lampCapacity).[12]
Timed processes
- Charcoal pit: 18,000 ticks, which is 18 hours (blocks.charcoal.charcoalTicks).[12]
- Composter: 288,000 ticks in normal conditions, which the config describes as 12 days (blocks.composter.composterTicks).[12]
- Composter rainfall: with blocks.composter.composterRainfallCheck on, the composter works less efficiently at high or low rainfall.[12]
- Mud bricks: 24,000 ticks to dry, or 24 hours (blocks.dryingBricks.mudBricksTicks).[12]
- Candles: 264,000 ticks to burn out, or 264 hours (blocks.candle.candleTicks).[12]
Storage and item handling
Item size decides where things fit. Small is the largest size for Small Vessels, and Normal is the largest for Large Vessels. Large is the largest size for Chests, and a Pit Kiln holds four Large items. Very Large items go alone in a Pit Kiln, and Huge items fit in no normal storage. In this pack blocks.chest.chestMaximumItemSize is LARGE.[12][17]
Weight sets the stack size. Very Light is 64, Light is 32, Medium is 16, Heavy is 4 and Very Heavy is 1. Carrying one item that is both Huge and Very Heavy makes you exhausted. Carrying two or more gives you the Overburdened effect, which makes movement very slow.[17]
Moving water: aqueducts
Aqueducts carry water source blocks horizontally over any distance, including Fresh Water, Salt Water and Hot Spring Water. Connect them in a horizontal line with one end next to a source or falling water, and after a short wait water flows out the other end. They don't create permanent sources, so the water disappears if you remove them.[18]
How do you progress through TerraFirmaCraft?
4 parts
The in-game TerraFirmaCraft guide describes its Advanced Mechanics section as the tech tree from the first pickaxe all the way to colored steel. The pack's quest chapter walks you down that same road, so you can follow the quests tier by tier.[7][19]
Stone age to first copper
The chain opens with gathering. "{gravitas.quest.caveman.straw}" quest asks for 32 Straw, and "{gravitas.quest.caveman.small_copper}" quest asks for 20 Small Malachite. Small ores are weak: each one only gives 10 mB of metal, and casting needs at least 100 mB in total. They also hint at a bigger vein nearby, so remember where you find them.[5][7]
"{gravitas.quest.caveman.important_molds}" quest wants unfired molds for the pickaxe head, prospector's pick head, saw blade, hammer head and ingot, plus an unfired large vessel and an unfired vessel. "{gravitas.quest.caveman.fire}" quest then asks for 2 Firestarter and 8 straw alongside those molds, and "{gravitas.quest.caveman.fired_mold}" quest wants the fired versions, like the Ingot Mold and Vessel. "{gravitas.quest.caveman.early_metal_storage}" quest covers early storage with 4 unfired vessels and an unfired large vessel.[7]
To cast, you melt ore in a pit kiln and pour it into a fired mold. "{gravitas.quest.caveman.copper_tool}" quest asks for a Copper Pickaxe Head and a Copper Prospector's Pick Head. "{gravitas.quest.caveman.saw_blade}" quest asks for a Copper Saw Blade and the finished Copper Saw. The chisel step wants a Copper Chisel and its Copper Chisel Head.[5][7]
This is an anvil recipe for the first pickaxe head.
Anvil (tfc)
- any copper ingot
Recipe id: tfc:anvil/copper_propick_head
Copper to bronze
Next the quests ask for 16 Graphite and 16 Kaolinite, then a Handstone and a Quern. After that come Fire Clay and the fire brick step, which asks for the Unfired Fire Brick and the Fire Brick. There is also a quest for 16 Flux and one for 2 unfired crucibles and 2 Crucible.[7]
The pack added a Create mechanical crafting recipe for the unfired fire brick, so you can make it from fire clay that way.[20]
Mechanical Crafting (create)
10 × Fire Clay
Recipe id: create:mechanical_crafting/unfired_fire_brick
The pack also added Create milling recipes that turn Borax and any fluxstone into flux. Immersive Engineering mineral veins, also added by the pack, can give graphite, kaolinite, limonite and magnetite.[20]
The metal quests then ask for a copper double ingot and a Copper Anvil. The anvil unlocks three parallel bronze branches: Bismuth Bronze Ingot, Bronze Ingot and Black Bronze Ingot. Each branch has a follow-up quest for its double ingot.[7]
The pack changed Immersive Engineering's alloy smelter and arc furnace bronze recipes so they output the TFC bronze ingot.[20]
Alloy (immersiveengineering)
- any copper ingot
- 2× any tin ingot
Recipe id: immersiveengineering:alloysmelter/bronze
The pack changed this alloy smelter recipe to output the TFC bronze ingot.
Wrought iron
Iron needs a bloomery, and the quests prepare you for it. "{gravitas.quest.caveman.cutting}" quest asks for 16 Andesite Brick, and "{gravitas.quest.caveman.mortar}" quest asks for 16 Mortar. The bloomery quest follows, asking for the Bloomery plus a stack of tagged items.[7]
The pack added this Create mixing recipe for mortar.
The next quest wants 14 each of Wrought Iron Ingot, Raw Iron Bloom and Refined Iron Bloom. You turn a raw bloom into a refined one on the anvil, then work the refined bloom into a wrought iron ingot. A Wrought Iron Anvil comes after.[7][20]
Steel and colored steel
The steel step asks for a Blast Furnace, 12 Wrought Iron Sheet, 4 Fire Bricks and a Wrought Iron Tuyere. "{gravitas.quest.caveman.steel}" quest then wants Pig Iron Ingot, High Carbon Steel Ingot and Steel Ingot. On the anvil, pig iron becomes high carbon steel, and high carbon steel becomes steel.[7][20]
After the Steel Anvil, the quests ask for 14 Black Steel Ingot and a Black Steel Anvil. Then the path splits into a weak blue steel branch and a weak red steel branch. Each goes through its high carbon stage to the finished ingot, then to its own anvil.[7]
The final quests ask for the Blue Steel Bucket and Red Steel Bucket, then a Blue Steel Pickaxe and a Red Steel Pickaxe. The two bucket recipes are shown below.[7]
Steel from other mods is rerouted too. The pack changed several Immersive Engineering, Immersive Petroleum and Beyond Earth steel recipes to output the TFC steel ingot.[20]
How does TerraFirmaCraft work with other mods?
2 parts
In this pack, TerraFirmaCraft connects to other mods through crafting recipes: the advancedtfctech power loom, which turns TFC fibers into cloth, and astikorcarts, which adds carts and plows built from TFC wood and parts. Both use TFC items as ingredients.[20]
Power loom cloth (advancedtfctech)
This mod adds the Pirn, which you wind in the crafting grid to get a Fiber-Winded Pirn or a Wool-Winded Pirn. The recipe for the fiber version is below, and the wool version is shown further down.[20]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: advancedtfctech:crafting/fiber_winded_pirn
Winding a pirn with jute fiber in the crafting grid.
The power loom then turns a wound pirn plus a matching material into TFC cloth. Every loom recipe gives the empty pirn back along with the cloth.[20]
- Burlap Cloth: a Fiber-Winded Pirn together with Jute Fiber.[20]
- Wool Cloth: a Wool-Winded Pirn together with Wool Yarn.[20]
- Silk Cloth: a Silk-Winded Pirn together with String.[20]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: advancedtfctech:crafting/wool_winded_pirn
Winding a pirn with wool yarn in the crafting grid.
The power loom turns the wound pirn and wool yarn into wool cloth and returns the empty pirn.
Carts and plows (astikorcarts)
The cart mod is built around TFC's wood types. Animal carts, supply carts and plows each come in a version per wood, and each one is crafted with that wood's TFC lumber. They all also use Brass Mechanisms.[20]
Each of those vehicles uses that wood's wheel, and the wheel itself is made from the wood's TFC lumber plus a wooden rod. The maple recipes below are examples, and the other woods follow the same pattern with their own lumber.[20]

The plow uses the same core parts plus rods.
Which All the Mods - Gravitas quests use TerraFirmaCraft?
6 parts
Everything for this mod in the pack sits in one quest chapter, and it takes you from gathering straw all the way to red and blue steel tools. The chapter's title shows up as an unresolved text key in the data, so I can't give you its display name. The order below follows the prerequisites between the quests.[7]
Straw, molds and your first fire
- "{gravitas.quest.caveman.straw}" quest asks for 32 Straw. It has no prerequisite listed.[7]

Red and blue steel
After the black steel anvil the chapter splits into two parallel lines. The blue line runs a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}" (Weak Blue Steel Ingot), a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}" (High Carbon Blue Steel Ingot), a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}" (Blue Steel Ingot), a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}" (Blue Steel Anvil) and a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}" (Blue Steel Bucket).[7]
The red line mirrors it: a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}" (Weak Red Steel Ingot), a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}" (High Carbon Red Steel Ingot), a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}" (Red Steel Ingot), a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}" (Red Steel Anvil) and a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}" (Red Steel Bucket). The last quest, a quest in "{gravitas.chapters.1.title}", needs both anvils and asks for a Blue Steel Pickaxe and a Red Steel Pickaxe.[7]
Unverified The quest data I have doesn't show rewards, so I can't tell you what each quest pays out.
Which TerraFirmaCraft config options matter?
5 parts
TerraFirmaCraft splits its settings across three files in this pack: the client file, the common file, and the server file in the defaultconfigs folder. Most of what changes your day-to-day play lives in the server file, so that's where we'll spend most of our time.[12][21][22]
World and calendar
- general.setTFCWorldTypeAsDefault is true, so the TFC world type (tfc:tng) is set as the default world generation. It only works if the setting was still on 'default', and another mod could still override it.[22]
- calendar.defaultMonthLength is 8 days, and calendar.defaultCalendarStartDay is 40, which starts new worlds on June 1, 1000. Both only apply to newly created worlds. You can change the month length in an existing world with the /time command.[22]
Survival rules
- general.enableForcedTFCGameRules is true. That forces natural regeneration off, so health regen is much slower, and also turns off phantoms, wandering traders and pillager patrols.[12]
- mechanics.player.foodDecayModifier is 1, so food expires at the normal rate. mechanics.player.enableOverburdening and mechanics.player.enableThirstOverheating are both on, while mechanics.player.enablePeacefulDifficultyPassiveRegeneration is off.[12]
- Cave-ins are on. mechanics.collapses.enableBlockCollapsing is true, and mechanics.collapses.collapseTriggerChance is 0.1, the chance that mining a block triggers a collapse. mechanics.collapses.collapsePropagateChance is 0.55, and collapse radius runs from mechanics.collapses.collapseMinRadius (3) up to that plus mechanics.collapses.collapseRadiusVariance (16).[12]
- Thatch beds can set your spawn (blocks.thatchBed.enableThatchBedSpawnSetting is true), but you can't sleep the night in one, since blocks.thatchBed.enableThatchBedSleeping is false.[12]
Metalworking setup
- blocks.anvil.anvilAcceptableWorkRange is 0, so anvil results must be pixel perfect to count as complete.[12]
- blocks.crucible.crucibleCapacity is 4,000 mB. The ingot mold (items.molds.moldIngotCapacity) holds 100 mB, while items.molds.moldMaceHeadCapacity and items.molds.moldSwordBladeCapacity are both set to 200 mB.[12]
- The blast furnace holds 4 items per chimney level (blocks.blastFurnace.blastFurnaceCapacity) and can be built up to 5 levels (blocks.blastFurnace.blastFurnaceMaxChimneyHeight). Its output tank holds 10,000 mB (blocks.blastFurnace.blastFurnaceFluidCapacity). blocks.blastFurnace.blastFurnaceFuelConsumptionMultiplier is 4, and higher means faster fuel use.[12]
- The bloomery holds 8 items per chimney level (blocks.bloomery.bloomeryCapacity) and goes up to 3 levels (blocks.bloomery.bloomeryMaxChimneyHeight).[12]
- The pit kiln reaches a maximum temperature of 1,400 (blocks.pitKiln.pitKilnTemperature1) and burns out after 8,000 ticks, which is 8 in-game hours (blocks.pitKiln.pitKilnTicks).[12]
