Small Ships is a mod in All the Mods - Gravitas 4.0, where it is version 2.0.0-a2.3.1. Vanilla friendly Ships for Minecraft. Now with cannons! (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Small Ships?

2 parts

Small Ships adds sailable, medieval-inspired ships to Minecraft, built for exploration, trade and naval battles. It's designed to be vanilla friendly, and you can mount cannons on the ships to fight at sea. If you want to cross oceans in something with more character than a boat, this mod is for you.[1]

The pack ships Small Ships version 2.0.0-a2.3.1, built for Minecraft 1.18.2.[2]

The four ships

  • Cog: a cold-water medieval trade ship with 108 slots, up to 4 cannons, 5 passengers, a speed of 40 km/h and 300 HP.[1]
  • Brigg: a two-masted cold-water trade ship with 162 slots, up to 6 cannons, 11 passengers, a speed of 45 km/h and 400 HP.[1]
  • Galley: a warm-water warfare ship with 54 slots, 9 passengers, a speed of 40 km/h and 200 HP.[1]
  • Drakkar: a cold-water Viking-style ship with 54 slots, 11 passengers, an ice-breaker ability, banner-pattern shields, a speed of 30 km/h and 200 HP.[1]

Getting started

Place the ship far out in open water, because it needs space to spawn. Right-click to sit in it. While you're aboard, press R to open or close the sail, and use W and S to raise or lower the sail speed.[1]

Biome matters. Cold-water ships are 10% faster in cold biomes and 10% slower in warm ones, and warm-water ships do the opposite. Each cannon slows you by 2.5%, and cargo can cost you up to 10% of your speed.[1]

Tip: You can dye sails with a right-click, name your ship with a nametag, and repair it with iron nuggets and planks.[1]

Unverified The stats above come from the mod's project page. Nothing I was given confirms that this pack leaves them unchanged, and the pack's crafting recipes and config options for the mod aren't confirmed either. I also found no quests or progression-path entries for Small Ships, so I can't say where it fits in the pack's progression.

How do you get started with Small Ships?

5 parts

Small Ships adds sailable, medieval-style ships, and in this pack every ship recipe has been changed from the mod's defaults. So don't rely on what you remember from other modpacks. The recipe blocks below show the exact in-pack crafting, and the order here is the one that makes sense for a first ship.[1][3]

Step 1: Make a Sail

Every ship needs a Sail, so craft that first. The pack changed this recipe too.[3]

Step 2: Build a Cog

The Cog is the best starting ship. Its recipe is the simplest of the three ship types, because the larger ships need an extra item on top of it. The mod page describes it as a medieval trade ship for cold water, and you can build it in any of the wood variants. Here is the Oak version, Oak Cog.[1][3]

According to the mod page, a Cog has 108 slots, 5 passenger seats, room for up to 4 cannons, a top speed of 40 km/h and 300 HP of hull. Those are the mod's listed stats. The sources don't show whether the pack changes any of them, so treat them as the mod's defaults.[1]

Step 3: Launch and sail

  1. Place the ship far out in the water, because it needs space to spawn.[1]
  2. Right-click the ship to sit in it.[1]
  3. While seated, press R to open or close the sail, and use W and S to raise or lower your sail speed.[1]
  4. Press F5 and use the mouse wheel to change the camera distance.[1]
  5. To open the ship's inventory from outside, crouch and right-click it.[1]
Tip: The Cog is a cold-water ship. It is 10% faster in cold biomes and 10% slower in warm ones. Warm-water ships like the Galley work the other way round.[1]

Step 4: Upgrade to a Brigg or Galley

Once you have a Cog working, the bigger ships are the next goal. The Brigg is a two-masted cold-water trade ship with 162 slots, 11 passengers, up to 6 cannons, 45 km/h and 400 HP. The Galley is a warm-water warship with 54 slots, 9 passengers, 40 km/h and 200 HP. Their recipes ask for more than the Cog, so check the block for the wood you want. Here is the Oak Brigg, Oak Brigg.[1][3]

Step 5: Add cannons

Cannons come last, since you only need them for naval fights. You need the Ship Cannon itself and Cannon Ball ammo, and both have in-pack recipes.[1][3]

  • Right-click while holding a cannon to mount it on a ship, and remove one with a pickaxe.[1]
  • Put cannonballs in the ship's inventory, then press Space while looking in the direction you want to fire.[1]
  • Each cannon slows the ship by 2.5%, so don't over-arm a trade ship.[1]

The mod also supports dyeing sails, naming a ship with a name tag, and repairing it with iron nuggets and planks. The sources don't show whether the pack changes any of these.[1]

How does Small Ships work?

7 parts

The sources describe no machines, multiblocks, power or fluids for Small Ships. It is all about boats that you craft, sail and load with cargo and cannons. This section covers how the ships behave in this pack, and I point out where the pack config differs from the mod's project page.[1][4]

Getting aboard and steering

  • Place the ship far out in open water, because it needs space to spawn. Then right-click it to sit in it.[1]
  • While seated, press R to open or close the sail, and use W and S to raise or lower sail speed.[1]
  • Right-click an entity to dismount it from the ship. To open the ship's inventory from outside, crouch and right-click.[1]
  • Third person (F5) plus the mouse wheel adjusts camera distance.[1]

In this pack the camera switches to third person automatically when you board (Ship.General.Camera.shipGeneralCameraAutoThirdPerson is true). Zooming is enabled and runs from 5 to 20, set by Ship.General.Camera.Zoom.shipGeneralCameraZoomMin and Ship.General.Camera.Zoom.shipGeneralCameraZoomMax. The Small Ships creative tab is switched off here (General.smallshipsItemGroupEnable is false).[5]

The three ship types in this pack

The pack's config covers the Cog, the Brigg and the Galley. Each has its own speed, health, turning and cargo settings. The mod page describes the Cog and Brigg as cold-water ships and the Galley as a warm-water ship.[1][4]

  • Cog: 300 max health, max speed 30, max rotation speed 4.5 and 108 container slots in this pack. The mod page also lists up to 4 cannons and 5 passengers.[1][4]
  • Brigg: 450 max health, max speed 35, max rotation speed 4 and 162 container slots in this pack. The mod page also lists up to 6 cannons and 11 passengers.[1][4]
  • Galley: 200 max health, max speed 30, max rotation speed 5 and 54 container slots in this pack. The mod page also lists 9 passengers.[1][4]
Watch out: Go by the pack's config, not the project page. The page lists the Brigg at 400 HP, while this pack sets Ship.Brigg.Attributes.shipAttributeBriggMaxHealth to 450.[1][4]

The Cog, Brigg and Galley share the same acceleration (0.015) and max reverse speed (0.1). Rotation acceleration differs: 0.55 for the Brigg, 0.7 for the Cog and 1 for the Galley. That makes the Galley the quickest to turn and the Brigg the slowest.[4]

Speed modifiers

Biome temperature affects speed. The mod page says a cold-water ship is 10% faster in cold biomes and 10% slower in warm ones, and a warm-water ship is the reverse. In this pack the Brigg and Cog are set to cold (0) and the Galley to warm (2), through Ship.Brigg.Modifier.shipModifierBriggBiome, Ship.Cog.Modifier.shipModifierCogBiome and Ship.Galley.Modifier.shipModifierGalleyBiome. The config accepts -1 for none, 0 for cold, 1 for neutral and 2 for warm.[1][4]

Cargo and cannons also slow you down. A full container can cost up to 10% of your speed, and the pack's Ship.General.Modifier.shipGeneralContainerModifier is set to 10. The mod page says each cannon cuts speed by 2.5%.[1][4]

Ship.General.Modifier.shipGeneralPaddlingModifier is set to 35. Its description is a speed bonus in percent for a paddle ship while paddling.[4]

Cargo storage

Each ship has a built-in container. Sizes are set per ship, must be divisible by 9 and bigger than 0, and in this pack they are 162 for the Brigg, 108 for the Cog and 54 for the Galley. You will find them in Ship.Brigg.Container.shipContainerBriggContainerSize, Ship.Cog.Container.shipContainerCogContainerSize and Ship.Galley.Container.shipContainerGalleyContainerSize. The sources describe opening the inventory by hand, and nothing about automated item transfer.[1][4]

Cannons

  • Add a Ship Cannon to a ship by right-clicking while holding one.[1][3]
  • Fire with Space while looking in the cannon's direction. This needs Cannon Ball items in the ship's inventory.[1]
  • Remove a cannon with a pickaxe. Key-binds can be changed in the options.[1]

Crafting a ship

Every ship is built from a Sail and a boat. The pack changed these recipes to use TerraFirmaCraft boats, so you build the ship from the matching TFC boat. The wood name also changes: the Dark Oak ships use a Hickory Boat and the Jungle ships a Palm Boat. The Briggs and Galleys also need a wooden chest, but the Cogs don't. Here are the sail and one example of each ship type, using Oak.[3]

  • Right-click with dye to colour the sail, and use a name tag to name the ship.[1]
  • Ship.General.shipGeneralCollisionDamage is set to 7.5 in this pack.[4]
  • Ship.General.shipGeneralSailCooldown is set to 30, and Ship.General.shipGeneralDoItemDrop is true.[4]
  • The config has a Fleeing Water Animals group: [[config:config/smallships-common.toml#Ship.General.Fleeing Water Animals.waterAnimalFleeDistance]] is 10, [[config:config/smallships-common.toml#Ship.General.Fleeing Water Animals.waterAnimalFleeRadius]] is 15 and [[config:config/smallships-common.toml#Ship.General.Fleeing Water Animals.waterAnimalFleeSpeed]] is 1.5.[4]

How do you progress through Small Ships?

6 parts

Unverified The quest sources here do not show any Small Ships quest or quest chapter for this mod, so the pack's quest book order is not covered. The progression below follows the in-pack recipes instead.

The ship families

Ships come as Cog, Galley and Brigg, each in oak, spruce, birch, acacia, jungle and dark oak. Oak is the easiest example: Oak Cog, Oak Galley and Oak Brigg. The pack changed every one of these recipes, and each ship is built from a matching boat, so the wood you pick decides which boat you need.[3]

Some wood names don't line up with the boat. The Dark Oak ships use a hickory boat in this pack, and the Jungle ships use a palm boat. Oak, spruce, birch and acacia ships use the boat of their own wood.[3]

Start with the Sail

Every ship in the pack needs a Sail, so craft that before anything else. The pack changed this recipe too.[3]

Next, the Cog

Then the Galley and the Brigg

Watch out: The recipe dump lists the pack's Acacia Galley recipe as producing an Acacia Cog instead of an Acacia Galley. Check the result in the crafting grid before you spend a Sail and a boat on it. The other Galley recipes list their own ship as the output.[3]

Cannons and ammo

The pack also changed the Ship Cannon and Cannon Ball recipes, so don't go by what the mod normally asks for. Once you have a ship, these are the next things to craft.[3]

A note on the tfships recipes

The dump also lists a separate set of recipes under the tfships namespace. They are marked as plain mod recipes, not pack changes, and they use ingredients such as TFC chests and cast iron sheets. The pack's changed versions are the ones under the smallships namespace, so use those as your guide.[3]

How does Small Ships work with other mods?

4 parts

Small Ships connects to other mods through crafting recipes. Every link in the recipes shown here runs through the tfc namespace: the ships are built around tfc boats and chests, and the cannon gear uses tfc cast iron.[3]

Ships are built from tfc boats

The pack has changed the Small Ships hull recipes so each one is built around a tfc boat, such as the Oak Boat. Cogs need only the boat, a Sail and Lead. Briggs and galleys also need a chest.[3]

The chest requirement is where the two recipe sets differ. The pack-changed recipes in the smallships namespace accept any chest from the wooden chests tag. The recipes in the tfships namespace ask for the tfc chest of the same wood as the boat.[3]

Wood type mapping

Extra tfc wood ships

The tfships recipes add cogs, briggs and galleys for the tfc woods, and these ships are registered in the tfships namespace. Examples are the Ash Cog, Maple Brigg and Willow Galley. The new ships cover ash, aspen, blackwood, chestnut, Douglas fir, hickory, kapok, maple, palm, pine, rosewood, sequoia, sycamore, white cedar and willow. Each one is built around the boat of its own wood, with the matching chest for briggs and galleys.[3]

Cannons and cannonballs

The Ship Cannon and Cannon Ball also tie into tfc. Both recipes use tfc cast iron, so you need to work that metal before you can arm a ship.[3]

Once a cannon is mounted, it fires only if the ship's inventory holds cannonballs.[1]

One oddity in the recipe dump: the pack's smallships:acacia_galley recipe is listed as producing an Acacia Cog rather than an Acacia Galley. The tfships:acacia_galley recipe lists the Acacia Galley as its output.[3]

Which Small Ships config options matter?

4 parts

Small Ships has two config files in this pack: a client file for camera and creative-tab settings, and a common file for ship stats, storage and general behavior. Here are the options you're most likely to care about, with the values this pack uses.[4][5]

Ship stats

Each ship has its own attribute options. The Brigg, Cog and Galley share the same acceleration and reverse speed, so the real differences are health, top speed and how sharply they turn.[4]

Storage and biome settings

General behavior

Client options

Tip: To change the camera distance in game, switch to third person view with F5 and use the mousewheel. The zoom min and max options above set the limits.[1][5]
Watch out: Both config files contain a schematicVersion entry that is marked as internal, with a comment saying DO NOT TOUCH. Leave it alone.[4][5]

What changed in Small Ships between versions?

1 part

All the Mods - Gravitas 4.0 ships Small Ships 2.0.0-a2.3.1, the Forge build for 1.18.2. The mod has been in the pack since Gravitas 1.1 or earlier. The notes below come from the mod's own changelogs for the alpha builds that matter here.[2]

Changes in the alpha builds

  • 2.0.0a2.2 added a paddling modifier.[6]
  • 2.0.0a2.2 fixed the incompatibility with Immersive Portals and Oh The Biomes You'll Go.[6]
  • 2.0.0a2.2 adjusted passenger positions for all ships.[6]
  • 2.0.0a2.2 fixed the sail sound firing twice.[6]
  • 2.0.0-a2.3.1, the version in this pack, fixed a weird mixin crash on 1.18.2.[7]
Watch out: The changelogs label these builds as alpha releases meant for testing and development, not for production servers, and tell you to back up your worlds and files before loading them. The 2.0.0a2.2 notes also warn you may see data loss or corruption when updating to that version.[6][7]
