Blood Magic is a mod in All the Mods - Gravitas 4.0, where it is version 1.18.2-3.2.6-41. An arcane art for ultimate power (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Blood Magic?

2 parts

Blood Magic is for players who find most magic mods too tame. You gather power from a forbidden material, blood, and the mod warns that every action with it can prove deadly. This pack includes Blood Magic 1.18.2-3.2.6-41.[1][2]

What you get

  • Blood Altars, built as a ziggurat to focus your power, with Blood Runes to customise them.[3][4]
  • Sigils, which draw LP from your Soul Network to perform useful tasks, and Alchemy Arrays drawn on the ground with Arcane Ashes.[5][6]
  • An Alchemy Table that can double ores, produce basic ingredients and create Anointments.[7]
  • Demon Will, Sentient tools and the Hellfire Forge, plus Living Armor with upgrades and downgrades.[8][9][10][11]
  • Rituals that consume LP, and an item routing network that the guide pitches as a replacement for hoppers.[12][13]

Where it fits in your progression

Everything is gated by your Blood Altar tier. At Tier 1 you build the altar and a Sacrificial Knife, then use LP to craft a Weak Blood Orb. Tier 2 adds the Dagger of Sacrifice and Potioncrafting. Tier 3 opens basic Rituals and Living Armour, and the Edge of the Hidden Realm gives you limited access to the Demon Realm.[9]

Advanced rituals need Dusk Runes, and therefore a Tier IV Altar. Tier Five is the top tier and unlocks everything the mod offers. The guide itself says Blood Magic 3's progression is still being reworked, so treat it as a rough roadmap.[9][14]

Tip: Craft the in-game guidebook, the Sanguine Scientum, with a book and a piece of glass. It has a built-in getting started guide, and installing JustEnoughItems makes recipes easier to find.[1]

Unverified The sources do not show this mod on the ATM Star path or tied to any quest in this pack, so don't expect quest guidance for it. Use the in-game guide instead.

How do you get started with Blood Magic?

5 parts

Blood Magic runs on LP, which you pull out of your own Soul Network. Early on, everything is about building a way to make LP and then spending it on the tools that unlock the next step. The mod's own in-game guide says its progression is still being reworked, so treat this as the overview it gives, in order.[5][9]

Build the Blood Altar

The Blood Altar is your first goal. Heads up: the pack has changed this recipe from the mod's default, so use the one below and not what you remember from other packs.[9][15]

Make LP and spend it

  1. Build a Sacrificial Knife and use it on yourself (Self-Sacrifice) to generate LP.[9]
  2. Spend that LP on a Weak Blood Orb, several Blank Slate items and a few Soul Snares.[9]
  3. Put your bound orb into an Alchemy Table. The table draws LP from the Soul Network of the orb in it to craft things like Arcane Ashes, reagents for sigils, anointments and 2x ore processing.[7][9]

Arcane Ashes and Alchemy Arrays

Craft Arcane Ashes in the Alchemy Table, then use them on a block to draw an Alchemy Array. Each use costs 1 of the ashes' 20 durability. An array needs two items, a base and then a catalyst, and it activates when you apply the catalyst. Arrays can craft items such as a Divination Sigil, or perform a function such as turning day into night.[9][16]

Arrays are also how you make sigils, which are formed from a reagent and a slate and then draw LP from your Soul Network to do their jobs.[5]

Get your first Demon Will

Throw Soul Snares at hostile mobs. White particles show they have been hit. Kill the mob and it drops Demon Will, and Looting increases the amount. Once you have a couple, you can craft a Sentient Sword and a Tartaric Gem, which make collecting Will much easier. Will is also what the Hellfire Forge crafts with.[8][9][17]

Level up the altar

At Tier Two you can craft a Dagger of Sacrifice to get more LP from mobs, and upgrade runes become available for your altar. Start with the Blank Rune, since several other runes are crafted from it.[9][15]

Tip: Once your altar reaches Tier 3, you can start on rituals. You will need an Activation Crystal, a Master Ritual Stone and enough Ritual Stones. A Ritual Diviner is not required, but it makes building them much easier.[18]

How does Blood Magic work?

10 parts

In Blood Magic, Life Essence is measured as LP. You make it at the Blood Altar, and sigils and rituals draw LP from your Soul Network when you use them. This section walks through how those systems fit together in this pack.[5][12][19]

The Blood Altar

The Blood Altar is the central block of the mod. It converts blood into Life Essence and uses that to transfigure items placed into it. You can insert one item from your hand into its internal inventory, and extract it again with an empty hand.[19]

Recipe id: bloodmagic:blood_altar

The pack changes this recipe from the mod default.

To get LP into the altar, craft a Sacrificial Knife and use it while aiming at air. That extracts 200 LP for the cost of one heart and puts it into a nearby altar. The altar has a maximum capacity, and the blood level in the basin shows how full it is. Keep in mind that 10% of the total LP the altar can hold is absorbed into an invisible internal tank used for extracting and inserting Life Essence.[19]

A Divination Sigil used on the altar can show its current tier, the Life Essence stored in it and its maximum capacity. The Seer's Sigil adds more, including the amount of blood currently inside the altar, the crafting progress, the LP consumed per tick while crafting, and the LP stored in any Charging Runes.[20][21]

Runes and altar upgrades

Runes are how you grow the altar. Its capacity can be increased with Rune of Capacity and Rune of Augmented Capacity. Reinforced versions of the runes exist too, such as Reinforced Rune of Capacity.[15][21]

The pack changes this recipe from the mod default.

The Acceleration Rune speeds up other runes. Normally the Charging Rune and Displacement Rune act every 20 ticks. Each Acceleration Rune removes one tick from that delay, down to a minimum of one operation per tick.[22]

The other runes in this pack are Charging Rune, Displacement Rune, Rune of Sacrifice, Rune of the Orb and Speed Rune.[15]

Soul Network and sigils

Sigils are made from an Alchemy Array, a reagent and a slate. They draw LP from your Soul Network every time you use them. These costs come straight from the in-game guide:[5]

  • Air Sigil: 50 LP per use. It gives no Feather Falling effect, so watch your landing.[23]
  • Water Sigil: 100 LP to place a source block of water.[24]
  • Lava Sigil: 1000 LP to place a source block of lava.[25]
  • Void Sigil: 50 LP per fluid block destroyed.[26]
  • Green Grove Sigil: 150 LP per use on a growable block. Toggled on, it spends 150 LP every 5 seconds and ticks growth in a 7x7x5 volume centered on you.[27]
  • Sigil of Magnetism: raises item pickup range to 7 blocks for 50 LP every 5 seconds.[28]
  • Sigil of the Fast Miner: applies Haste for 100 LP every 5 seconds.[29]
Watch out: If your Soul Network runs dry, some sigils take the cost from your health instead. The Water Sigil drains the toll from your health, and the Lava Sigil drains 5 hearts.[24][25]

The Sigil of Holding stores up to 5 other sigils, giving you their passive effects and letting you activate them. In this pack the client option client.sigilHoldingSkipsEmptySlots is false, so cycling through the Sigil of Holding behaves like the default hotbar and does not skip empty slots.[30][31]

Alchemy Arrays

Arrays are circles drawn on the ground with Arcane Ashes. Drawing one costs 1 durability out of 20 and gives an array with no effect yet. Each effect needs two items: first you click the array with a base, and the design changes if it is valid. Then you click with a catalyst to activate it. Each click consumes a single item from your hand. The guide notes that only a few arrays are currently implemented.[16]

Crafting arrays inscribe the base item onto the catalyst and turn both into a useful item. The Divination Sigil, for example, is made with Redstone Dust as the base and a Blank Slate as the catalyst.[20][32]

The Alchemy Table

The Alchemy Table crafts items using LP from a Soul Network. The Blood Orb in the slot on the right side of its GUI decides which Soul Network is used and which tier of recipes you can craft.[33]

Recipe id: bloodmagic:alchemy_table

If a recipe will not run, the table tells you something is wrong. The two most common reasons are an orb error and a Soul Network error. An orb error means there is no Blood Orb in the slot, or it is too low a level. A Soul Network error means the orb is valid but not bound to you, or your network lacks the LP. Bind an orb by right-clicking while holding it. The guide documents the recipes currently available for the table.[33]

Automation with the Alchemy Table

The table has six buttons on its right side: Down, Up, North, South, West and East. Click a slot, then click a face button to toggle whether hoppers, pipes or other outside inventories can use that face. The slot icon shows whether it accepts inputs or provides outputs. Click the slot again to deselect it and return to normal.[33]

The Water and Lava Sigils can be used in the table to automate Water and Lava Buckets, and they are not consumed. The Water Sigil can also stand in for a Water Bucket in any Alchemy Table recipe.[33]

Blood Magic also has its own item routing network with a variety of filters. The pack leaves the client option client.alwaysRenderRoutingLines set to false.[13][31]

Rituals

Rituals consume LP from your Soul Network. You can build simpler ones with a Tier III Blood Altar, but advanced rituals need Dusk Runes and therefore a Tier IV altar. You assemble a ritual with a Ritual Diviner, activate it with an Activation Crystal and fine-tune it with a Ritual Tinkerer.[12][14]

Several rituals handle item and block automation. The mod's landing text warns that a lot of stuff isn't yet implemented, so treat the descriptions below as what the mod's own text says about each ritual, not a guarantee of finished behaviour.[34]

  • Crafting Ritual: crafts items based on the linked Item Filter, taking from a connected input inventory. It can also work with a linked Hellfire Forge or Alchemy Table.[34]
  • Felling Ritual: described by the mod as cutting down trees and leaves in its area and collecting the drops into a chest.[34]
  • Crushing Ritual: described by the mod as breaking blocks in its range and placing the items into a linked chest.[34]
  • Feathered Knife Ritual: described by the mod as draining health from players in its area and putting the LP into a nearby Blood Altar.[34]

Sacrifice values in this pack

The option [[config:config/bloodmagic-common.toml#Config Values.sacrificialValues]] sets the LP gained per HP sacrificed for each listed entity, and a value of 0 blacklists it. This pack sets villager, cow, chicken, horse, sheep, wolf, ocelot, pig and rabbit to 100, slime to 15 and enderman to 10.[35]

The pack also sets [[config:config/bloodmagic-common.toml#Config Values.sacrificialDaggerConversion]] to 100, within a range of 0 to 10,000.[35]

Living Armour upgrade points

Living Equipment starts out equivalent to Iron but is as durable as Diamond Armour. It has Upgrade Points that limit how much it can be trained, and it starts with 100. A ritual in the mod raises the maximum to 300. Upgrade Tomes let you teach a chestplate a skill, and the Training Bracelet can cap or block individual upgrades.[34][36][37][38]

Alchemy Flasks

Alchemy Flasks hold 8 doses. Once a flask is used up, you refill it with water, and splash and lingering versions exist as well. Catalysts decide which effect gets boosted, because Power and Lengthening Catalysts hit the topmost effect first.[39]

How do you progress through Blood Magic?

5 parts

There are no quests for Blood Magic in this pack, so nothing pushes you through it. This section follows the mod's in-game tier guide and the recipes the pack actually uses. That guide says Blood Magic 3's progression is still being reworked, so treat the overview below as a rough map rather than a locked-in path.[9]

Unverified The pack's quest book does not cover Blood Magic, and the mod is not on the ATM Star quest path, so there are no quest steps to follow for it.

Tier 1: Blood Altar and the basics

You start by building a Blood Altar and a Sacrificial Knife. You use the knife to generate LP by self-sacrificing, then spend that LP on a Weak Blood Orb, several Blank Slate items and a few Soul Snares.[9]

The pack changed the Blood Altar recipe, so don't rely on older guides for it. Here is the in-pack version:[15]

The other Tier 1 stations are the Alchemy Table and the Hellfire Forge. The Alchemy Table spends LP from your bound Blood Orb to make things like Arcane Ashes, sigil reagents and anointments. The Hellfire Forge crafts with Demon Will, which you first get from Soul Snares.[9]

Slates and altar upgrades

The Blood Altar's main job is making slates. Each slate tier needs the previous tier plus a more powerful altar. The in-game guide says Ethereal Slates aren't enabled by default but may be in a modpack. This pack does have recipes that use Ethereal Slate, namely the reinforced rune upgrades.[15][40]

At Tier 2 you get various upgrade runes for your altar and more sigils. The guide's advice is to keep upgrading the altar. The rune recipes start from a Blank Rune.[9][15]

The pack changed the Rune of Capacity recipe, so check it here instead of assuming the mod default:[15]

The reinforced rune recipes, like the Reinforced Speed Rune, take the matching base rune, an Ethereal Slate, Intricate Hellforged Parts and a Large Bloodstone Brick, plus a netherite scrap. They are mod recipes, not pack changes.[15]

Tier 2: Potions and alchemy

Tier 2 also opens potioncrafting. You can craft Alchemy Flasks and imbue them with a large number of effects.[9]

Two of the Alchemy Table's cutting fluid recipes were changed by the pack: Advanced Cutting Fluid, with either a potion or a Water Sigil. If you follow a guide for ore processing, check these in JEI first.[15]

Tier 3: Rituals

Rituals unlock once your Blood Altar reaches Tier 3. You need an Activation Crystal (only the Weak Crystal is available at that point), a Master Ritual Stone at the centre of every ritual, and enough Ritual Stone blocks to build it. A Ritual Diviner is recommended because it makes building much easier.[18]

Tip: If you get 'You feel a push, but are too weak to complete this ritual', your Soul Network doesn't have enough LP. If you see 'You feel that these runes are not configured correctly...', something has gone wrong in the placement of the runes. Also remember that every ritual responds to a redstone signal, so a lever on the side of the Master Ritual Stone is a good way to deactivate it.[18]

For the Sound of the Cleansing Soul ritual, the guide recommends the Ritual Diviner [Dusk] for easier construction.[15][41]

Alchemy arrays and Living Armour

Alchemy Arrays are drawn with Arcane Ashes, and each effect needs a base item and then a catalyst. Arcane Ashes are crafted in the Alchemy Table from early game items.[15][16]

Living Armour is made with an alchemy array: you need Iron Armour, Arcane Ash, Binding Reagent and at least a Common Tartaric Gem to hold the Demon Will. It starts equivalent to iron, with 100 Upgrade Points to spend on training.[36]

After that you train it by doing things. For example, Quick Feet is trained by running around and Dwarven Might by mining. Growth is limited, so the guide suggests keeping separate chestplates for different jobs, such as mining, combat or exploration.[37][42][43][44]

How does Blood Magic work with other mods?

3 parts

Blood Magic doesn't live on its own in this pack. Every recipe below is marked as changed by the pack, so it won't match what you remember from the mod's defaults. Most of the links go to tfc items, with one to Immersive Engineering.[15]

Wrought iron gear becomes Blood Magic gear

The Dagger of Sacrifice is made at the Blood Altar from a Wrought Iron Sword. So your first trip through tfc metalworking comes before you can start sacrificing.[15]

Dagger of SacrificeChanged by the pack

Altar (bloodmagic)

Recipe id: bloodmagic:altar/daggerofsacrifice

The Sentient tools follow the same pattern. In the Hellfire Forge, a Petty Tartaric Gem is combined with a wrought iron tool of the matching type. That covers the Sentient Sword, Sentient Axe, Sentient Pickaxe, Sentient Shovel and Sentient Scythe.[15]

Sentient SwordChanged by the pack

Soulforge (bloodmagic)

Living armor works the same way. Each piece is an Alchemy Array craft that pairs a Binding Reagent with the matching wrought iron armor piece: Wrought Iron Helmet, Wrought Iron Chestplate, Wrought Iron Greaves or Wrought Iron Boots. The results are Living Helmet, Living Chestplate, Living Leggings and Living Boots.[15]

Living ChestplateChanged by the pack

Array (bloodmagic)

Altar upgrades are affected too. The Rune of Capacity needs a Wrought Iron Sheet and a Wooden Bucket as part of its crafting recipe.[15]

The connection also runs the other way. Blood Magic can produce materials that tfc and Immersive Engineering would normally gate.[15]

Tip: Plan your tfc metalworking early. Almost every tool, armor and rune upgrade in Blood Magic here starts from a wrought iron item.[15]

Which Blood Magic config options matter?

2 parts

Blood Magic has a client config and a common config in this pack. Here are the options you're most likely to want to check, with the exact values this pack uses.[31][35]

Common config

  • [[config:config/bloodmagic-common.toml#Config Values.sacrificialValues]] sets how much LP you get per HP sacrificed for each listed entity. A value of 0 blacklists the entity. In this pack the list is villager 100, slime 15, enderman 10, and cow, chicken, horse, sheep, wolf, ocelot, pig and rabbit all at 100. Vanilla entities don't need the modid in this list.[35]
  • [[config:config/bloodmagic-common.toml#Config Values.sacrificialDaggerConversion]] is set to 100 in this pack. The allowed range is 0 to 10,000.[35]
  • [[config:config/bloodmagic-common.toml#Config Values.makeDungeonRitualCreativeOnly]] is false here. When it's true, the dungeon spawning ritual can only be activated with a Creative Activation Crystal. That's meant for servers where you don't trust players not to destroy other people's bases. Since it's false, that restriction is off.[35]
  • Blacklist.wellOfSuffering is an empty list in this pack, so nothing has been added to it.[35]

Client config

What changed in Blood Magic between versions?

1 part

All the Mods - Gravitas 4.0 ships Blood Magic 1.18.2-3.2.6-41. The mod has been in the pack since Gravitas 1.1 or earlier, so this is the version you get in 4.0.[2]

Version 3.2.6

This is the mod's own changelog for the version the pack uses. Here is what changed:[2][45]

  • The Sigil of Holding now renders so that it displays the selected Sigil in your hand.[45]
  • A new music disc was added, and you can find it in the Mines.[45]
  • Several textures were modified, and the Reinforced Runes' recipes were adjusted to match.[45]
  • The Harvest Moon ritual was fixed so that it works properly with Netherwart.[45]
  • The recipe framework of the Mark of the Falling Tower was modified to make custom recipes easier to create, and it now includes fluid support.[45]
  • Patchouli documentation was added for The Rhythm of the Beating Anvil ritual (the Autocrafting Ritual).[45]

Unverified No pack changelog entries for Blood Magic were available, so any changes the pack itself made to this mod between releases are unverified.
