What is Thermal Foundation?

2 parts

Thermal Foundation is the base module of the Thermal Series, a long-running set of mods from Team CoFH. This pack ships version 9.2.1 for Minecraft 1.18.2. The module bundles Thermal's "Core" and "Foundation" parts: common components, resources and tools that the rest of the series builds on.[1][2]

The Thermal Series is modular, so a pack can pick the parts it wants. It also needs CoFH Core to run. The series has a big legacy: the Forge Energy system grew out of its Redstone Flux, and side reconfiguration, advanced redstone control and blue/orange input coloring all started there.[1]

Who it's for

It suits newcomers and veterans alike. You get the Thermal in-game guide, which has chapters on materials, tools, armor, elemental charges, explosives, plants, mobs and more. If you want to know how a Thermal thing works, start there.[1][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]

Two things in the guide's technology material are worth knowing early. Augments upgrade machines, devices, dynamos and tools. Machines use RF and come with a blank side configuration when first placed, so no sides accept items or fluids until you set them up.[10][11]

In this pack

The clearest progression link in the quest data is the quest a quest in "Blast Furnace (To make a different Anvil)". Its tasks are to obtain Mechanical Saw and Sawdust, and it unlocks after a paper-making quest.[12]

If you tweak settings, the mod's common config file is thermal-common.toml in the config folder, and it holds the worldgen options. Client options are in thermal-client.toml. Server options live in thermal-server.toml, inside the world's serverconfigs folder.[1]

Unverified The sources do not show where Thermal Foundation fits in the wider progression of this pack, and it is not on the ATM Star quest path. Beyond the sawdust quest above, treat its place in the progression as unconfirmed.

How do you get started with Thermal Foundation?

5 parts

Thermal Foundation runs on Redstone Flux (RF): machines use it, dynamos make it, and augments tune both. This pack changes some of the mod's recipes, so the recipe blocks below show the in-pack versions.[11][13][14]

Get power sorted

Machines need RF to work, and an unupgraded one uses up to 20 RF/t. Dynamos burn fuel to make RF, and without upgrades they put out up to 40 RF/t. A dynamo only outputs from its coil side (the big red nub that glows while it generates) and takes fuel from every other side.[11][13]

Set up your first machine

A freshly placed machine has a blank side configuration, so no side accepts items or fluids until you set it. Open the Configuration panel and click a side to cycle it: blue is input and orange is output. Redstone Control defaults to working regardless of signal. Side configurations are saved when you pick the block up.[11]

Shift right-click a machine with the Crescent Hammer to pick it up, or right-click to rotate it. This is handy while you work out your layout.[15]

Make sawdust

The pack's quest book has a quest that asks for a Create mechanical saw and Sawdust, and it comes after the paper-making quest. See a quest in "Blast Furnace (To make a different Anvil)". Thermal gives you two machine routes: the pulverizer turns any log into sawdust, and the sawmill gives planks plus sawdust.[12][14]

Tip: Don't let a dynamo's buffer sit full. At full buffer it runs at 10% output but still burns fuel, so the RF it makes is wasted.[13]

How does Thermal Foundation work?

6 parts

Thermal runs on Redstone Flux (RF). Machines need RF to operate, while devices don't unless their entry says so. Everything below, from dynamos to augments to automation, hangs off that split.[18][19]

Every machine, device and dynamo GUI has side panels. One shows RF information such as current and max RF usage, and others hold your augments and your redstone response settings. If you're ever lost in a GUI, check those panels first.[20]

Power: dynamos

Dynamos turn fuel into RF. Each one has a coil side, marked by a large red nub that glows while it generates. RF comes out of the coil side only, and fuel goes in through any of the other sides. Without upgrades a dynamo makes up to 40 RF/t, and the pack keeps the base power at 40 for every dynamo listed below.[13][21]

  • Stirling: burns solid fuel items. Base power is set by [[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Dynamos.Stirling.Base Power]].[21][22]
  • Compression: burns combustible liquid fuels such as tree oil. Base power is set by [[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Dynamos.Compression.Base Power]].[21][23]
  • Magmatic: uses lava. Base power is set by [[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Dynamos.Magmatic.Base Power]].[21][24]
  • Gourmand: uses food. Base power is set by [[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Dynamos.Gourmand.Base Power]].[21][25]
  • Disenchantment: uses enchanted items such as books. Base power is set by [[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Dynamos.Disenchantment.Base Power]].[21][26]
  • Lapidary: uses crystals and gems. Base power is set by [[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Dynamos.Lapidary.Base Power]].[21][27]
  • Numismatic: uses coins. Base power is set by [[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Dynamos.Numismatic.Base Power]].[21][28]

Dynamos throttle themselves based on their internal buffer. When the buffer is empty they run at full output. When it's full they drop to 10% output, and they still burn fuel while the RF they make is wasted. So hook them up to something that actually uses the power. The buffer only outputs while the dynamo is generating, and it slowly decays when idle. That's why a dynamo seems to lose RF on its own.[13][29]

Augments can tune a dynamo. Multi-cycle Injectors scales fuel efficiency by 1.1. Auxiliary Reaction Chamber raises maximum generation by 100% but scales efficiency by 0.9.[14][23][30][31]

Augments

Machines, devices, dynamos and tools can all take augments, either in the tinker bench or in the augment panel of the block's GUI. Hover over an augment to see its modifiers and its augment type. The type decides where it fits, so machine augments can't go into dynamos. Modifiers starting with '+' stack additively, and those ending in 'x' stack multiplicatively. Underlined multipliers don't stack, and only the highest one applies.[10]

The Integral Components are the general upgrade ladder. They scale base RF storage and transfer, fluid storage and transfer, and RF/t usage or generation. Hardened (Hardened Integral Components), Reinforced (Reinforced Integral Components) and Resonant (Resonant Integral Components) give 2x, 3x and 4x. Only the highest one applies, but it stacks with other augment modifiers. For example, a Redstone Furnace with Resonant and Hardened components plus a Stabilized RF Coil has 24x the RF storage, 8x the RF transfer and 4x the base RF/t.[14][32]

Side reconfiguration is also pack-tuned. Modular Reconfiguration has a changed recipe, shown below. The pack config sets [[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Augments.Default Side Reconfiguration]] and [[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Augments.Default Redstone Control]] to true, so most supporting blocks have them built in. [[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Augments.Default XP Storage]] is false, so XP storage needs the Knowledge Concentrator. These settings don't cover every block.[14][21]

The Knowledge Concentrator lets a machine or device collect XP from recipes or the world. It starts at 2.5k XP of storage, multiplied by the Integral Components scale factor. Once it's installed, click the small crystal icon in the GUI's lower right corner to take the XP out.[42]

Moving energy, fluids and items

Fluxducts carry energy, and saturating the connection allows higher transfer, so aim for a stable demand. A Redstone Flux Limiter attachment caps the flow. Fluiducts carry fluid, but a duct network holds and moves only one fluid at a time. To pull fluid out of blocks that don't auto-output, you need a servo attachment.[43][44]

There are no Thermal itemducts here. Dynamics is a work in progress and only has Fluxducts and Fluiducts, so use another pipe mod for item transport. The in-game guide recommends XNet, Refined Pipes and Integrated Tunnels, plus content mods like Create and Immersive Engineering.[45]

For buffering, the Redstone Flux Cell stores and distributes RF, and the Fluid Cell stores and distributes fluid, one fluid at a time. Both can be set per side and to auto-input/output, they give a comparator signal proportional to how full they are, and augments improve their capacity and transfer. You can dial the input and output rates in with the '+' and '-' buttons in the GUI.[46][47]

Watch out: Right-clicking a Fluid Cell with a bucket fills or empties it one bucket at a time. There is currently a Forge bug where trying to bucket a nonbucketable fluid voids your bucket.[47]
Tip: Alt-shift-clicking any fluid or RF gauge in a machine clears it and voids the contents. Handy for dumping a wrong fluid, dangerous if you misclick.[48]

For automation, Cyclical Processing lets a machine's valid outputs be fed back into its own input slots. Item Filter augments let a machine, device or piece of equipment accept only chosen items. You can add up to 15 items, switch between allow and deny lists, and choose whether NBT matters. The Nullifier voids everything inserted by automation instantly. Items put in through its GUI wait until you press the trash button.[49][50][51]

Some machines have chance-based outputs, especially with catalysts. When the output slot fills, the stack size simply grows to fit the extra outputs. That's intended, not a bug.[52]

Devices worth knowing

  • Igneous Extruder: needs an adjacent lava source and an adjacent coolant block, and can optionally use a block underneath. It makes 1 block per second, up to 4 per second with integral components.[53]
  • Aqueous Accumulator: makes infinite water when at least two source blocks touch its sides. Sources above or below don't count.[54]
  • Aquatic Entangler: must sit in water. The pack sets its base time constant to 4,800 ticks ([[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Devices.Fisher.Time Constant]]), reduced by 20 ticks per nearby water source ([[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Devices.Fisher.Water Source Time Constant Reduction]]).[21][55]
  • Arboreal Extractor: pulls fluid from an adjacent tree, with a base time constant of 500 ticks in the pack ([[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Devices.TreeExtractor.Time Constant]]). Bonemeal boosts output 1.5x for 8 cycles and phyto-gro boosts it 2.0x for 16 cycles.[21][56]
  • Batch Composter: base time constant is 120 ticks in the pack ([[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Devices.Composter.Time Constant]]).[21]
  • Vacuumulator: collects items in a 9x9x9 area, expandable to 15x15x15 with radial enhancement. It picks up XP orbs with a Knowledge Concentrator installed.[57]

Picking blocks back up

Shift right-click a machine with the Crescent Hammer to pick it up, or right-click to rotate it. The pack's server config says what a dropped block keeps. Augments, energy, redstone control and side configuration are retained ([[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Global Options.Blocks Retain Augments]], [[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Global Options.Blocks Retain Energy]], [[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Global Options.Blocks Retain Redstone Control]], [[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Global Options.Blocks Retain Side Configuration]]). Inventory contents are not ([[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Global Options.Blocks Retain Inventory]] is false). The energy and inventory settings don't cover every block.[15][21]

Tip: Thermal server configs are created per save in the world's serverconfigs folder. Copy the file into defaultconfigs to apply it to newly created worlds. Edits to the default file won't change a world that already exists.[1][29]

How do you progress through Thermal Foundation?

4 parts

Thermal Foundation has very little quest handholding in this pack. The only quest in the sources that touches the mod is a quest in "Blast Furnace (To make a different Anvil)". It asks you to get Mechanical Saw and Sawdust, and it unlocks after the paper-making quest. The rest of your progression comes from the recipes themselves, which is what this section follows.[12]

Step 1: Sawdust and the first machines

Sawdust has several sources. A sawmill turns any log or stem type into its planks plus sawdust. A pulverizer turns any log into sawdust. A press with the Unpacking Die unpacks a Block of Sawdust back into sawdust, and you can also do that in a crafting grid.[14]

The pack changed one sawdust recipe. The pulverizer recycle recipe for diamond tools gives you Cut Diamond from TFC along with sawdust.[14]

Keep in mind that machines need Redstone Flux to run, while devices do not unless their description says so.[18][19]

Step 2: Alloys, glass and elemental charges

The Thermal alloys come from fire charge recipes, which are plain mod recipes the pack leaves alone. Signalum Ingot and Lumium Ingot come first, and Enderium Ingot is the top of the line.[14][58]

Recipes the pack changed

Several recipes differ from the mod defaults here, so check the recipe viewer rather than relying on what you remember from other packs. These are the ones the sources flag as changed by the pack:[14]

Some devices keep the stock mod recipe, including the Igneous Extruder, Batch Composter and Arboreal Extractor. The Redstone Servo appears in many of the device and augment recipes, so look it up in the recipe viewer early.[14]

How does Thermal Foundation work with other mods?

6 parts

In this pack, Thermal's machines are wired into the other mods you'll be using. Most of the changes are recipe inputs and outputs: Thermal machines and crafting recipes take in and hand out items from TerraFirmaCraft, Immersive Engineering, Firmalife and a few others. Every recipe below was changed or added by the pack, except the Create splashing recipe, which comes from the mod itself.[14]

Induction Smelter and ore processing

The pack changed the Induction Smelter recipe, so check it before you build one. The smelter's ore recipes also changed. They give you TFC metals and Thermal byproducts.[14]

Press: packing and unpacking

The Thermal press, with its Packing Die (3x3) and Unpacking Die, converts between nuggets, ingots and blocks. In this pack the outputs are mostly TFC or Immersive Engineering items.[14]

Quest tie-in

Quest a quest in "Blast Furnace (To make a different Anvil)" asks for Create's Mechanical Saw and Thermal's Sawdust. It comes after the paper making quest.[12]

Which All the Mods - Gravitas quests use Thermal Foundation?

In this pack's quest data, one quest involves Thermal Foundation: a quest in "Blast Furnace (To make a different Anvil)". It has no title in the data, and its chapter title only appears as an untranslated placeholder.[12]

The quest asks you to hand in a Mechanical Saw and some Sawdust. Sawdust is the Thermal item here.[12]

It comes after a paper-making quest, which the data files under the steel quest group. The data only gives that prerequisite as an untranslated key, so I can't give you its in-game name.[12]

Which Thermal Foundation config options matter?

6 parts

Thermal Foundation splits its settings across a client file, a common file for world generation, and a server file for gameplay. This pack ships the server file in its default configs folder. The values below are exactly what the pack sets.[1][21]

Ore generation is switched off

This is the one that surprises people. Every Thermal ore in the common config has its vein count set to 0, and the config describes 0 as disabled. That covers cinnabar, lead, nickel, niter, oil sand, silver, sulfur and tin. For example, [[config:config/thermal-common.toml#World.Ores.Tin.Vein Count]] and [[config:config/thermal-common.toml#World.Ores.Lead.Vein Count]] are both 0, and so are [[config:config/thermal-common.toml#World.Ores.Nickel.Vein Count]] and [[config:config/thermal-common.toml#World.Ores.Silver.Vein Count]].[61]

The height ranges and vein sizes are still filled in. Tin, for instance, has [[config:config/thermal-common.toml#World.Ores.Tin.Min Y]] at -20, [[config:config/thermal-common.toml#World.Ores.Tin.Max Y]] at 60 and [[config:config/thermal-common.toml#World.Ores.Tin.Vein Size]] at 9. They only matter if you raise the vein count above 0.[61]

Power numbers

  • Every dynamo, including the Magmatic, Stirling, Compression, Gourmand, Lapidary, Numismatic and Disenchantment dynamos, has a base generation of 40 RF/t. See [[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Dynamos.Magmatic.Base Power]] and [[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Dynamos.Stirling.Base Power]].[21]
  • Most machines have a base consumption of 20 RF/t, including the Pulverizer ([[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Machines.Pulverizer.Base Power]]) and the Induction Smelter ([[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Machines.Smelter.Base Power]]).[21]
  • The Magma Crucible is the hungry one at 80 RF/t ([[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Machines.Crucible.Base Power]]).[21]
  • The Crystallizer and the Pyrolyzer are the lightest at 5 RF/t each ([[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Machines.Crystallizer.Base Power]] and [[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Machines.Pyrolyzer.Base Power]]).[21]

Redstone Flux is not standalone here: [[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Global Options.Standalone Redstone Flux]] is false, so Thermal stays interoperable with Forge Energy. The config says to only enable it if you absolutely know what you are doing.[21]

Devices

  • The Batch Composter's base time constant is 120 ticks ([[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Devices.Composter.Time Constant]]).[21]
  • The Aquatic Entangler's base time constant is 4,800 ticks, and each nearby water source block reduces it by 20 ticks ([[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Devices.Fisher.Time Constant]] and [[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Devices.Fisher.Water Source Time Constant Reduction]]).[21]
  • The Arboreal Extractor's base time constant is 500 ticks ([[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Devices.TreeExtractor.Time Constant]]).[21]

What blocks keep when you break them

When you pick up a Thermal block, it keeps its augments, its energy, and its redstone, side and transfer configuration. It does not keep its inventory contents or its tank contents. Those are [[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Global Options.Blocks Retain Inventory]] and [[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Global Options.Blocks Retain Tank Contents]], both false. The config notes that the energy, inventory and tank settings do not control every block.[21]

Augment defaults

Redstone control and side reconfiguration are enabled by default on most augmentable blocks. XP storage is not, so you need an augment for it. The options are [[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Augments.Default Redstone Control]], [[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Augments.Default Side Reconfiguration]] and [[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Augments.Default XP Storage]]. The config says these do not control every block.[21]

Mobs, trades, satchel and sounds

  • The Basalz, Blitz and Blizz are all enabled, and the Blitz can occasionally call down lightning ([[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Mobs.Blitz Lightning]]).[21]
  • Thermal trades are added to villagers and to the Wandering Trader ([[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Villagers.Enable Villager Trades]] and [[config:defaultconfigs/thermal-server.toml#Villagers.Enable Wandering Trader Trades]]).[21]
  • The satchel denylist blocks Satchel itself and every color of Shulker Box, so you can't nest those inside a satchel.[21]
  • Ambient sounds for Thermal blocks and mobs are on in the client config ([[config:config/thermal-client.toml#Sounds.Ambient Block Sounds]] and [[config:config/thermal-client.toml#Sounds.Ambient Mob Sounds]]). Turn those off if the machine hum gets annoying.[62]
