What is Immersive Engineering?

3 parts

Immersive Engineering is a tech mod built around realism-inspired, retro-futuristic machinery. Instead of glowing pipes you get actual hanging power lines, and instead of a single magic box you get big, animated multiblock machines. This pack includes version 1.18.2-8.4.0-161.[1][2]

What it does

  • Power moves through cables strung between connectors, not through lines of adjacent blocks. The mod uses the Forge Energy API, but it can be played fully standalone.[1]
  • Power generation comes from waterwheels, windmills, biodiesel and more.[1]
  • Many machines are multiblocks. The crusher is a 5x3x3 structure with rotating wheels, and the excavator is a 3x7x8 structure that digs ores out of the ground with a bucketwheel.[1]

If you ever get lost, the Engineer's Manual is the mod's in-game documentation, so check it for how a machine or multiblock works.[1]

Who it is for

It suits you if you like tech that looks and feels physical: placing wires, building structures and watching them run. It is also meant to be more balanced and prettier than a typical tech mod.[1]

Where it fits in the pack

The pack's quest book has a chapter that opens with a quest asking for the Engineer's Hammer, Engineer's Wire Cutters and Engineer's Screwdriver ("Engineer's Tools" quest). Quests that follow it ask for 27 Coke Brick, then 27 Blast Brick and 8 Treated Wood Planks.[3]

The same chapter also has quests for the Engineer's Crafting Table, the Engineer's Workbench, Engineer's Blueprint items and the Engineer's Manual. For prospecting it asks for the Mineral Survey Tools and the Core Sample Drill. The "Press Molds" quest quest asks for five press molds, including Metal Press Mold: Plate and Metal Press Mold: Gear.[3]

How do you get started with Immersive Engineering?

6 parts

Immersive Engineering is a tech mod built around big multiblock machines and hanging power cables instead of pipes or lanes of blocks. In this pack, a quest chapter walks you through the early game, and the order below follows that chain.[1][3]

Step 1: Get the manual

Start with the Engineer's Manual. It is the mod's in-game documentation, and the quest a quest in "Blast Furnace (To make a different Anvil)" asks you to make it. It also counts toward the mod's "Acquire the Engineer's Manual" advancement.[1][3][4]

Crafting Shapeless

Step 2: Make the Engineer's tools

The first quest in the chain, "Engineer's Tools" quest, wants an Engineer's Hammer, Engineer's Wire Cutters and Engineer's Screwdriver. The coke brick quest comes after it, so everything else hangs off these three tools.[3]

Watch out: The pack changed the hammer and wire cutter recipes, so don't rely on what you remember from the base mod. The screwdriver recipe is the mod's own. Check the recipes below.[5]

Step 3: Bricks and treated wood

Next, a quest in "Blast Furnace (To make a different Anvil)" asks for 27 Coke Brick. After that the chain splits in two. One branch wants 8 Treated Wood Planks (a quest in "Blast Furnace (To make a different Anvil)"). The other wants 27 Blast Brick (a quest in "Blast Furnace (To make a different Anvil)").[3]

How does Immersive Engineering work?

5 parts

Immersive Engineering is built around realism-inspired tech: big multiblock machines and real cables hanging between poles. This section covers how those systems fit together in this pack. For documentation, the mod points you to its in-game manual, the Engineer's Manual. You craft it with a book and a lever.[1]

Power: cables, not lanes

The mod uses the Forge Energy API, so it works with other tech mods, but it can also be played fully standalone. Power does not travel through lanes of blocks. Instead, you span cables between connectors, and they hang in the world as visible powerlines.[1]

The pack's client config lists these wire types: copper, insulated copper, electrum, insulated electrum, redstone and steel. It also lists two structural wires, a rope and a steel one. The mod can report what a network is doing. It shows stored energy in Flux, the average Flux per tick transferred over a number of ticks, and the average loss between points on a line.[4][6]

For generation, the mod offers waterwheels, windmills and biodiesel, among other things. The advancements point to the Kinetic Dynamo and the Diesel Generator multiblock. If you build windmills, note that the pack sets increasedTileRenderdistance to 1.5, so they stay visible 1.5 times further than the default render distance.[1][4][6]

Multiblocks

Many of the mod's machines are multiblocks. The Crusher is a 5x3x3 structure with rotating wheels. The Excavator is a 3x7x8 structure that digs ores out of the ground with a bucketwheel, and it is resource intensive to build. The mod's advancements name these multiblocks that you can form:[1][4]

  • Processing: Crude Blast Furnace, Improved Blast Furnace, Coke Oven, Arc Furnace, Crusher, Squeezer, Fermenter, Metal Press and Mixer.[4]
  • Fluids and storage: Refinery, Tank and Silo.[4]
  • Power and mining: Diesel Generator and Excavator.[4]

The Sawmill, Bottling Machine and Assembler also exist as machines in the mod, but the sources don't explain how they work.[7]

Fluids, items and automation

Storage blocks are friendly to move around. The Barrel keeps its fluid when broken, and the crate keeps its inventory when broken. The barrel cannot hold hot fluids or gases, and the game will warn you if a fluid is too hot or if a container can't store gases.[4]

Several machines have settings you change in-game. The Bottling Machine can either hold containers until they are full or allow partial filling. Pumps can be toggled to replace fluid blocks with cobblestone, but the mod warns that this can cause lag with large amounts of fluid. Redstone control can be inverted, and a strong redstone signal can be enabled or disabled on blocks that support it.[4]

For moving items around, the mod's advancements mention the Conveyor Belt, the Dropping and Extracting Conveyor Belts, the Item Router, the Item Batcher and Sheetmetal Chutes. The sources don't describe exactly how they behave, so check the Engineer's Manual for details.[4]

Tip: The pack leaves the text overlay on (showTextOverlay). It shows the configuration of blocks like capacitors and pumps, so look at the block to check its settings.[6]

Prospecting and ores

The mod has a mineral vein system. A core sample reports the vein it finds, or tells you that no minerals were found, and it can show the vein's integrity. A survey gives hints such as traces of a mineral and which direction the vein lies in. You can also buy a Mineral Deposit Map from the Structural Engineer, a villager.[4]

The pack changes what the mod's ore handling produces. preferredOres is set to tfc first and minecraft second, in priority order. This decides which mod's ores the Excavator digs. It also decides the results of crushing recipes that have no Immersive Engineering item attached.[8]

The pack's default server config also sets the vein size of IE's bauxite, deep nickel, lead, nickel, silver and uranium ores to 0, which disables their generation. This is the default for new worlds. The server file is per world, so an existing world can differ.[8][9]

Where the settings live

The common config is not the whole story. Machine modifiers, ore generation and most other adjustable values sit in the server config. That file is per world, found under the world's serverconfig folder. Copying it into the defaultconfigs folder applies it to new worlds.[8]

The pack leaves the compatibility options for ComputerCraft, Curios, OC2 and The One Probe all enabled.[8]

How do you progress through Immersive Engineering?

6 parts

Immersive Engineering progression in this pack is guided by a chain of quests. It starts with a few hand tools, moves into brickwork and treated wood, and ends at the Engineer's Workbench. A second branch covers blueprints, the manual and mineral surveying. Here's the path in order.[3]

Step 1: Engineer's tools

The first quest, "Engineer's Tools" quest, asks for the Engineer's Hammer, the Engineer's Wire Cutters and the Engineer's Screwdriver. The pack changed the hammer and wire cutter recipes, so don't rely on what you remember from the base mod.[3][5]

A separate branch of quests covers "Blueprints" quest, which asks for three Engineer's Blueprint items. It also covers the Engineer's Manual (a quest in "Blast Furnace (To make a different Anvil)") and the Mineral Survey Tools (a quest in "Blast Furnace (To make a different Anvil)"). Once you have the survey tools, a quest in "Blast Furnace (To make a different Anvil)" follows with the Core Sample Drill.[3]

Some blueprint recipes differ from the base mod. The components blueprint recipe was changed by the pack, and the pack added an electrode blueprint recipe. The mineral survey tools recipe was changed as well.[5]

How does Immersive Engineering work with other mods?

4 parts

Immersive Engineering is wired into a lot of the pack. Most of the connections are recipes that the pack changed or added, so what you see here can differ from the standalone mod. The links fall into a few groups: TFC metals and materials, Create processing, Thermal and other ore-processing mods, and Immersive Petroleum.[5]

TFC metals and materials

The biggest change is that Immersive Engineering's metal processing now hands you TFC ingots. The pack changed the Arc Furnace ore recipes so they output Copper Ingot, Gold Ingot, Wrought Iron Ingot, Nickel Ingot and Silver Ingot. Here is the nickel one:[5]

Nickel IngotChanged by the pack

Arc Furnace (immersiveengineering)

Recipe id: immersiveengineering:arcfurnace/ore_nickel

The pack's Arc Furnace nickel recipe gives a TFC nickel ingot. Like the other pack-changed Arc Furnace ore recipes, it uses Slag.

  • Steel: both the Blast Furnace and the Arc Furnace produce Steel Ingot in this pack. Immersive Petroleum adds a pack-changed Arc Furnace variant that uses petcoke dust.[5]
  • Smelting: Immersive Engineering's nickel and silver ores, including the deepslate versions, smelt or blast into TFC Nickel Ingot and Silver Ingot.[5]
  • Ex Machinis compacting recipes added by the pack turn TFC garnierite into Raw Nickel and TFC native silver into Raw Silver. This works for the poor, normal and rich grades.[5]
  • Lapis: crushing lapis ore in the Immersive Engineering crusher gives Sulfur Dust and Cut Lapis Lazuli.[5]
Steel IngotChanged by the pack

Blast Furnace (immersiveengineering)

Recipe id: immersiveengineering:blastfurnace/steel

The Blast Furnace gives a TFC steel ingot in this pack.

The pack also added mineral mix recipes built around TFC rocks. The gneiss and granite mixes include Raw Lead and TFC native silver. The basalt mix includes lead, Raw Uranium and Rich Hematite. The claystone and shale mixes include raw uranium and Lignite. In the quest book, a quest in "Blast Furnace (To make a different Anvil)" asks for the Mineral Survey Tools, and a quest in "Blast Furnace (To make a different Anvil)" follows it and asks for the Core Sample Drill.[3][5]

Several crafted items now use TFC materials. This applies to Tough Fabric, Hempcrete, Hemp Rope Coil, Blade Quiver, Gunpowder Barrel, Balloon and Dropping Conveyor Belt. The pack changed all of these recipes. Here is Tough Fabric as an example:[5]

Tough FabricChanged by the pack

Food crops connect too. The pack changed the squeezer recipes for TFC beet, melon, pumpkin and wheat seeds, and added ones for oat, rye, soybean, squash and sugarcane seeds, all involving Plant Oil. The fermenter has pack-changed recipes for Ethanol with TFC sugarcane and with honey, and the honey one involves a FirmaLife Empty Jar.[5]

Create

  • Create's crushed ores smelt and blast into Immersive Engineering ingots. Crushed raw aluminum and uranium use mod recipes, while the lead one was changed by the pack. They give Aluminium Ingot, Uranium Ingot and Lead Ingot.[5]
  • Washing crushed ores gives Immersive Engineering nuggets: aluminium and uranium (mod recipes), plus lead, nickel and silver (changed by the pack). Washing Crushed Raw Copper gives an Copper Nugget and a clay ball.[5]
  • Crushing tuff or Veridium, including the recycling variants, drops an Copper Nugget among its outputs. The pack changed these recipes.[5]

The pack changed the Precision Mechanism sequenced assembly and added a Create compacting recipe for Brass Mechanisms. Both are shown below. The press molds quest, "Press Molds" quest, asks you to get the Immersive Engineering molds, including the Metal Press Mold: Gear.[3][5]

Thermal, Ex Nihilo, Bigger Reactors and Blood Magic

Sulfur Dust can come from several mods here. Thermal's Earth Charge and Blood Magic's Lava Sigil both have pack-changed recipes that make it. Immersive Petroleum's hydrotreater can produce it as well.[5]

Immersive Petroleum

Immersive Petroleum builds directly on Immersive Engineering, and its crafting recipes are unchanged mod recipes. The Automatic Lubricator, Flarestack, Portable Generator, Projector, Seismic Survey Tool, Motorboat and Expanded Fuel Tank all take Immersive Engineering parts in their crafting. Here is one example:[5]

Tip: Check the recipe viewer before smelting or processing any Immersive Engineering metal. In this pack, many of those recipes give TFC ingots rather than the mod's usual ones.[5]

Which All the Mods - Gravitas quests use Immersive Engineering?

3 parts

All the Immersive Engineering quests I can see in the pack sit in a single chapter. They ask you to collect items, so there is nothing to build or fight. Most of them are untitled in the files, so I'll point to them by quest and describe what each one asks for.[3]

The main chain: tools, bricks and workstations

  1. "Engineer's Tools" quest opens the chain. You hand in the Engineer's Hammer, the Engineer's Wire Cutters and the Engineer's Screwdriver.[3]
  2. a quest in "Blast Furnace (To make a different Anvil)" unlocks after that and asks for 27 Coke Brick.[3]
  3. Coke Bricks open two quests. a quest in "Blast Furnace (To make a different Anvil)" wants 8 Treated Wood Planks, and a quest in "Blast Furnace (To make a different Anvil)" wants 27 Blast Brick.[3]
  4. After the Treated Wood quest, a quest in "Blast Furnace (To make a different Anvil)" asks for the Engineer's Crafting Table. Then a quest in "Blast Furnace (To make a different Anvil)" asks for the Engineer's Workbench.[3]

The survey and info branch

Three quests share one prerequisite. "Blueprints" quest has three tasks, each an Engineer's Blueprint. a quest in "Blast Furnace (To make a different Anvil)" asks for the Engineer's Manual. a quest in "Blast Furnace (To make a different Anvil)" asks for the Mineral Survey Tools.[3]

The survey quest leads to a quest in "Blast Furnace (To make a different Anvil)", which asks for the Core Sample Drill.[3]

Press molds and iron plate

"Press Molds" quest asks for five Metal Press molds: Metal Press Mold: Plate, Metal Press Mold: Gear, Metal Press Mold: Rod, Metal Press Mold: Bullet Casing and Metal Press Mold: Wire. A separate quest, a quest in "Blast Furnace (To make a different Anvil)", asks for a single Iron Plate.[3]

Tip: The tools quest is the first step of the main chain, and everything in the bricks and workstations line unlocks from it. Start there.[3]

Unverified The blueprint, manual and survey quests all unlock from a quest I can't see (7EC4991C351C49AC). The molds quest and the iron plate quest also unlock from quests outside what I have (376F1F47067E2622 and 6FD65AD7EC4053EA). I can't confirm what those prerequisites ask for, where they sit in the chapter, or the chapter's display title.

Which Immersive Engineering config options matter?

3 parts

Immersive Engineering splits its settings across a client file, a common file and a server file, and the server file is the one that matters most for gameplay. It is not in the usual config folder. Here is what this pack sets in each one.[6][8][9]

Ore generation (server config)

This pack ships its server settings in defaultconfigs, which applies automatically to new worlds. Worlds you already created keep their own copy in saves/<world name>/serverconfig, so edit that file there if you want to change an existing world.[8][9]

The pack sets the vein size of every Immersive Engineering ore listed below to 0, and the option's own description says 0 disables generation. So you will not find these ores generated by the mod in new worlds.[9]

Preferred ore sources (common config)

preferredOres is set to tfc first, then minecraft. It decides which mod the results of Immersive Engineering processes should come from, in priority order. That covers the ores the excavator digs up and any crushing recipes that have no Immersive Engineering item of their own.[8]

The compatibility toggles compat.computercraft, compat.curios, compat.oc2 and compat.theoneprobe are all left on.[8]

Client settings worth a look

  • disableFancyTESR is true. It disables most of the lighting code on dynamically rendered models (turrets and garden cloches) and may improve your FPS.[6]
  • enableVBO is false. Turning it on renders certain blocks significantly faster, but it may not work correctly with visual effects from other mods.[6]
  • increasedTileRenderdistance is 1.5. It is a multiplier on how far certain tile entities, specifically windmills, stay visible.[6]
  • manualGuiScale is 4. It sets the GUI scale of the Engineer's Manual, using the same numbers as vanilla's GUI Scale.[6]
  • fancyItemHolding is true. It makes revolvers and other Immersive Engineering items look properly held in third person, but it uses a coremod. The option's description says to disable it if you hit conflicts with other animation mods.[6]
  • stencilBufferEnabled is true. Set it to false if you run into problems on an older GPU.[6]
  • badEyesight is false. Turn it on for bolder, darker text in the Engineer's Manual.[6]
Tip: If you are chasing FPS, look at disableFancyTESR and enableVBO in the client file. The pack already enables the first and leaves the second off, so only change them if you have a reason to.[6]
Watch out: Leave debug.wires.validateNets off, as the pack has it. It checks the wire network after every interaction, causes a decent amount of lag, and should only be enabled when an Immersive Engineering developer asks you to.[8]

What changed in Immersive Engineering between versions?

2 parts

All the Mods - Gravitas 4.0 ships Immersive Engineering 1.18.2-8.4.0-161. The mod has been in the pack since Gravitas 1.1 or earlier, so you may have seen some of these changes already if you've played older versions.[2]

1.18.2-8.4.0-161 (the version in this pack)

The big change here is an overhaul of the Accumulator Backpack. It now uses a fancy OBJ model and is crafted as an empty frame, so you put an accumulator in it yourself. Existing backpacks automatically migrate to an LV accumulator, so you won't lose anything.[10]

  • The backpack can be equipped with a shader or banner to show off over your shoulder.[10]
  • The Charging Antenna upgrade charges the pack by attaching to overhead wires.[10]
  • The Miniaturized Tesla Coil electrocutes your attackers.[10]
  • The Induction Charger charges your whole inventory.[10]
  • New Rock Softening Acid upgrade for the Mining Drill, which gives it Fortune 3.[10]
  • The rockcutter and grinding disk are faster, and there is a new bisexual pride shader.[10]
  • Config settings are now applied to CraftTweaker recipes, which matters in a scripted pack like this.[10]
  • Fixes: the crusher now animates and makes noise when crushing entities, capacitor tooltips show the stored energy, shaders and potion buckets show up in JEI, and the bucketwheel queries block particles properly.[10]

1.18.2-8.3.0-155

This earlier release was mostly about polish. Machines got new sounds (Assembler, Bottling Machine, Coke Oven, Fermenter, Mixer, Preheaters, Refinery and Sawmill) and a particle overhaul. That overhaul added and expanded particles for the Crusher, Sample Drill and Excavator, increased particles on the Mixer and Diesel Generator, and added smoke to the Arc and Blast Furnaces.[11]

  • The Cloche's GUI gained a process indicator, and CraftTweaker integration for the Cloche was fixed.[11]
  • The Arc Furnace can recycle additional items.[11]
  • Lead, Silver and Deepslate Nickel Ores have increased chances to spawn.[11]
  • The Crusher model now has interlocking wheels, and the Silo and Tank bounding boxes are stepped at the top.[11]
  • Fixes: the diesel generator no longer runs infinitely on too little fuel, toolbox data loss was fixed, revolvers now acquire perks from all their components, and the item router behaves correctly.[11]
  • The manual now opens when on a lectern, and very large multiblocks display better in it.[11]

Unverified No pack changelog entries for Immersive Engineering were available, so any changes the pack itself made to this mod's recipes or values are unconfirmed here.

Set this to true if you suffer from bad eyesight. The Engineer's manual will be switched to a bold and darker text to improve readability.
config/immersiveengineering-client.toml
false
disableFancyTESR
Disables most lighting code for certain models that are rendered dynamically (TESR). May improve FPS. Affects turrets and garden cloches
config/immersiveengineering-client.toml

earDefenders_SoundBlacklist
A list of sounds that should not be muffled by the Ear Defenders. Adding to this list requires knowledge of the correct sound resource names.
config/immersiveengineering-client.toml

enableVBO
Use VBOs to render certain blocks. This is significantly faster than the usual rendering, but may not work correctly with visual effects from other mods
config/immersiveengineering-client.toml
false
fancyItemHolding
Allows revolvers and other IE items to look properly held in 3rd person. This uses a coremod. Can be disabled in case of conflicts with other animation mods.
config/immersiveengineering-client.toml

Set this to false to change fluid recipes in the manual to use decimals on buckets instead of fractions
config/immersiveengineering-client.toml
