What is Firmalife?
2 parts
Firmalife is a food and farming addon for TerraFirmaCraft (TFC). It changes how several TFC food systems work and adds new ones. This pack includes version 1.2.17.[1][2]
What it adds
- Beekeeping: Wooden Beehive blocks house bees, and they need Beehive Frame items inside to work. Bees make honey, and pressing a filled frame with a knife gives you Beeswax. The most important use of beeswax is making Treated Lumber.[3]
- Cheese and bread: both are more involved than in plain TFC. Cheese can be placed in the world and aged in a Cellar, and bread needs yeast and a sweetener. The regular TFC bread recipe makes flatbread, which is worse nutritionally.[2][4][5]
- Chocolate: a multi-step process that starts with roasting cocoa beans. The in-game guide says it is for your enjoyment, not for squeezing out maximum value.[6]
- Cellars and greenhouses: both are multiblock structures controlled by a Climate Station. A cellar is an enclosed area surrounded by Sealed Bricks or sealed brick doors, and it is used for food preservation and cheese aging. Greenhouses let you grow crops year round.[7][8][9]
- Extras: drying mats for dried fruit, tofu and cinnamon, herbs and spices you can spread with Seed Balls, and extra plants such as cocoa and fig trees, nightshade and pineapple bushes.[10][11][12][13]
Where the quest book puts it
In the Getting Started chapter, you go from a beehive frame to a beehive. From the beehive, one quest asks for beeswax and another for raw honey with an empty jar. After the beeswax quest comes a quest for 8 treated lumber.[14]
Another chapter asks for the Climate Station, then for sealed doors and sealed bricks in the cellar quest "Cellar" quest. After the greenhouse quest, it asks for planters: trellis, large, hanging, hydroponic, quad and bonsai.[15]
Beeswax also shows up outside the Firmalife quests. A set of biome map quests each asks for 32 beeswax, along with an iron block and a copper anvil, so it pays to keep some bees around.[16]
Unverified Whether the ATM Star path uses Firmalife is not shown by the sources here. That detail would live in the pack's quest book, so check the ATM Star quests in game.
How do you get started with Firmalife?
5 parts
In this pack, the Firmalife items in the Getting Started quest chapter all lead back to bees. That chapter asks for a Beehive Frame, a Wooden Beehive, Beeswax, Raw Honey and Treated Lumber, in that order of unlocking. Here is how to work through them.[14]
Step 1: Beehive Frame and Wooden Beehive
The first quest, a quest in "Getting Started(Featuring Stone Anvils!)", asks for a Beehive Frame. a quest in "Getting Started(Featuring Stone Anvils!)" then asks for a Wooden Beehive. Bees can only live in a hive that has frames inside it.[3][14]

A hive knows about the area within 5 blocks of it. With at least 10 flowers nearby, an empty frame has a chance of getting a queen, and you'll see bee particles around the hive when it happens. Putting 4 empty frames in a hive greatly improves the odds of bees moving in.[3]
Step 2: Beeswax
a quest in "Getting Started(Featuring Stone Anvils!)" wants Beeswax. You get it by pressing a filled frame in your inventory with a Knife. This kills the queen inside that frame, so only scrape frames you can afford to lose.[3][14]
Beeswax is worth the trouble. Its most important use is making Treated Lumber, and a quest in "Getting Started(Featuring Stone Anvils!)" asks for 8 of it.[3][14]

Step 3: Honey
a quest in "Getting Started(Featuring Stone Anvils!)" asks for Raw Honey and an Empty Jar. Raw Honey is a sugar substitute. A hive that visibly has honey can be harvested into a Honey Jar using an Empty Jar. The pack changed how a Honey Jar is opened, so use the recipes below rather than relying on the mod's defaults.[3][14][18]
This recipe is changed by the pack.
Step 4: Climate Station and cellar
Next comes the Climate Station, which controls both the cellar and the greenhouse. In the pack's quest book, a quest in "More Anvils, but this time they're Bronze" asks for it, and "Cellar" quest follows with Sealed Bricks and a Sealed Door.[8][15]

A cellar is an enclosed area surrounded by Sealed Bricks or Sealed Brick Doors on all sides. Place the Climate Station on the first level, touching a wall. It shows water on its sides when the structure is valid and ice when it isn't.[7][8]
Step 5: Greenhouse and planters
The same Climate Station also runs a greenhouse, which lets you grow crops year round. Planters only work inside a valid greenhouse that has been activated with a Climate Station. The planter quests, such as a quest in "More Anvils, but this time they're Bronze" for the Large Planter, come after the greenhouse quest.[9][15][19]
The pack changed the greenhouse block recipes. Here is the Treated Wood wall, one of the four greenhouse block types.[9][18]

How does Firmalife work?
7 parts
Firmalife is built around a few multiblocks and small machines that all plug into TFC's food and farming systems. Once you understand the Climate Station, the oven stack and how fluids move, the rest falls into place.[7][8][20]
The Climate Station
The Climate Station is the brain of both the Cellar and the Greenhouse. It has to sit on the first level of the multiblock, touching a wall. When the structure is built correctly it shows water on its sides, and when it is invalid it shows ice, so you can see at a glance whether your build works.[7][8]
It updates on its own periodically, and also when it is placed or broken. Each update tells the blocks inside the multiblock that they may operate, which is what lets cheese start aging, for example. You can also force an update of the station and the blocks inside after you fix your build.[8]

Cellars
A Cellar is an enclosed area surrounded on all sides by Sealed Bricks or Sealed Brick Doors, with a Climate Station on the first level. Cellars age cheese and preserve food. They work better in cooler environments.[7]
The pack sets the temperature thresholds in its server config. Below an average of 0 degrees (general.cellarLevel2Temperature) the decay modifiers get stronger, and below -12 (general.cellarLevel3Temperature) they get stronger again.[7][21]
Food Shelves and Hangers only work inside a valid Cellar. A Food Shelf holds a full stack of one food item and gives a better decay modifier than vessels. The Hanger stores meat or garlic and gives a better modifier than shelves or vessels.[22][23]
Cheese wheels are placed as blocks and aged in the Cellar. In this pack a wheel becomes Aged after the number of days in general.cheeseAgedDays (28) and Vintage after the number in general.cheeseVintageDays (112). Slice cheese off the wheel with a Knife, because breaking the block loses the aging.[5][21]
Greenhouses and planters
A Greenhouse is an enclosed area built from blocks of one Greenhouse Type, controlled by a Climate Station, and it lets you grow crops year round. The floor can be any solid block. There are four block kinds: Walls, Doors, Roofs (stairs) and Roof Tops (slabs).[9]
Most greenhouse blocks age but stay in the same type, so your greenhouse keeps working. Treated Wood becomes Weathered, Copper goes Exposed, Weathered, then Oxidized, Iron becomes Rusted, and Stainless Steel does not age.[9]
In this pack the wall, door, roof and roof top recipes for copper and iron have been changed from the mod's versions. Here is the iron wall as an example.[18]

Planters must sit inside a valid greenhouse, be activated by the Climate Station, and get at least some natural sunlight. Check one by looking at it with a Hoe. Most need watering, which you do with a Watering Can.[19]
- Large Planters grow one crop each: Green Beans, Tomatoes, Sugarcane, Jute and Grains. Grains need a Copper or better greenhouse.[19]
- Quad Planters grow four crops that share one nutrient pool (Beets, Cabbage, Carrots, Garlic, Onions, Potatoes, Soybeans) in any greenhouse type.[19]
- Bonsai Planter grows small fruit trees, except Bananas, and needs an Iron or better greenhouse.[19]
- Hanging Planters grow Squash (any greenhouse) and Bananas (Iron or better). They must anchor to a solid block above.[19]
- Trellis Planters grow berry bushes except Cranberries, need an Iron or better greenhouse, and can propagate a mature bush upward into a planter stacked on top.[19]
- Hydroponic Planters grow rice and cranberry bushes. They skip watering, but need a Nutritive Vat below them or they will not grow.[19]
For automatic watering, a Sprinkler waters a 5x6x5 area centered on the block below it. It fills itself from any fluid tank or pipe placed above, and a barrel of water is the easiest setup. The dribbler works the same way but only waters the 7 blocks below it.[24]
Ovens
An oven is a multiblock of a Bottom Oven, a Top Oven and optional Chimneys. Food baked in it decays at 90% of the normal rate. The bottom oven holds fuel (logs only) and is the part you light. It passes heat to the top oven, which holds the food and releases heat slowly, so it keeps working briefly after the fuel runs out.[20]
Every side except the front must be insulated with Bricks, other oven blocks, or anything that can insulate a Forge, so stone blocks work. A stack of Chimneys directly behind the oven carries the smoke away.[20]
Oven blocks start as clay and must be cured. The pack sets the minimum temperature to general.ovenCureTemperature (600) and the curing time to general.ovenCureTicks (2,000 ticks). The in-game guide says about 80 seconds, so go by the pack's config. Curing spreads to nearby oven blocks and up chimneys.[20][21]
Oven appliances
- The Oven Hopper feeds logs into the Bottom Oven it faces. It holds 16 logs, you fill it by dropping items in the top, and other mods can automate it.[25]
- The Ashtray goes below a Bottom Oven and collects Wood Ash, with a 0.5 chance of gaining ash each time fuel is consumed.[25]
- The Vat sits on the block above a Bottom Oven. It has one item slot and a fluid space similar to a barrel, and must be sealed before it boils. If a recipe would overflow it, it will not boil.[25]
- TFC Pots and Grills can sit on top of a Bottom Oven and take heat automatically. Each has only 4 slots, and the pot only makes soup.[25]

A Vat recipe example is Olive Oil Water at a ratio of 1 Olive Paste to 200 mB Water. The Vat can also make Sugar Water and Fruity Fluid. Be careful, because piping Fruity Fluid through too many transfers could ruin it. A Jarring Station facing a vat of Fruity Fluid automatically fills up to 9 jars placed inside.[25][26]
Drying, smoking and composting
The Drying Mat dries items in the sun, and rain resets the process. The pack's general.dryingTicks is 12,000 ticks, half a day. A solar drier works the same way but uses general.solarDryingTicks, which is 1,000 ticks and so 12x as fast.[11][21]
Crafting Shaped
Recipe id: firmalife:crafting/drying_mat
For smoking, hang wool string within four blocks above a firepit. The firepit must burn only logs, because something like Peat instantly gives the food the Disgusting trait. Meat must be brined first, and cheese needs no prep. In this pack the time is general.smokingTicks, 8,000 ticks, which matches the guide's 8 in-game hours.[21][27]
The Iron Composter works like the normal Composter but also feeds compost directly into a hopper below it. The guide says four days, but this pack sets general.ironComposterTicks to 72,000 ticks (24,000 ticks is 1 day), so trust the config.[21][28]
Bees and the Mixing Bowl
A Wooden Beehive needs Beehive Frame items inside for bees to live. A hive knows about a 5 block radius. With at least 10 flowers nearby, an empty frame can gain a Queen, and 4 empty frames greatly improve the odds. Two queen frames plus an empty frame can breed, passing on abilities on a scale of 1 to 10.[3][18]
Hardiness lets bees produce honey in the cold, down to -16°C at 10 and 2°C at 1. High Mutant bees can develop a Genetic Disease, which they pass on and which stops honey production. Scraping a filled frame with a Knife gives Beeswax but kills the queen. In this pack bees can swarm if provoked, because general.enableBeeSwarm is true.[3][21]
The Mixing Bowl combines items and fluids. Use a Spoon on it to add the spoon to the bowl, which lets it operate.[29]
How do you progress through Firmalife?
5 parts
Firmalife progression in this pack follows the quest book: a beekeeping start in the Getting Started chapter, then a cellar line, and a greenhouse line with a set of planter quests. Treated Lumber, Sealed Bricks and the Climate Station are the key unlocks along the way.[14][15]
Step 1: Beekeeping and Treated Lumber
- Make a Beehive Frame for a quest in "Getting Started(Featuring Stone Anvils!)".[14]
- Build a Wooden Beehive for a quest in "Getting Started(Featuring Stone Anvils!)". Hives need frames inside them for the bees to live.[3][14]
- Collect Beeswax for a quest in "Getting Started(Featuring Stone Anvils!)". You get it by pressing a filled frame with a Knife.[3][14]
- Alongside that, a quest in "Getting Started(Featuring Stone Anvils!)" asks for Raw Honey and an Empty Jar.[14]
- Finish with 8 Treated Lumber for a quest in "Getting Started(Featuring Stone Anvils!)", which unlocks after the beeswax quest.[14]

Bees only move into a hive when it knows about enough flowers. A hive knows the area within a 5 block radius. With at least 10 flowers nearby, an empty frame can get a Queen, and having 4 empty frames greatly improves the odds of bees moving in.[3]
The pack changed the recipe that turns honey into Raw Honey, and it also changed the Honey Jar recipe. Use the recipe below, not the mod default.[18]

Step 2: The Cellar
The cellar line starts with a Climate Station (a quest in "More Anvils, but this time they're Bronze"). After that, "Cellar" quest asks for a Sealed Door and Sealed Bricks.[15]

Step 3: Greenhouses and Planters
The greenhouse line has one quest per planter type: a quest in "More Anvils, but this time they're Bronze" for the Trellis Planter, a quest in "More Anvils, but this time they're Bronze" for the Large Planter, a quest in "More Anvils, but this time they're Bronze" for the Hanging Planter, a quest in "More Anvils, but this time they're Bronze" for the Hydroponic Planter, a quest in "More Anvils, but this time they're Bronze" for the Quad Planter and a quest in "More Anvils, but this time they're Bronze" for the Bonsai Planter. Each of them unlocks after the greenhouse quest and one other quest.[15]
A greenhouse is a multiblock run by a Climate Station that lets you grow crops year round. It must be an enclosed area of blocks from one Greenhouse Type. The four types are Treated Wood, Copper, Iron and Stainless Steel. Treated Wood, Copper and Iron blocks age (Treated Wood becomes Weathered, Copper goes Exposed, Weathered, then Oxidized, and Iron becomes Rusted), but your greenhouse keeps working. Stainless Steel does not age.[9]
In this pack the Treated Wood, Copper and Iron greenhouse recipes are changed from the mod defaults. The Stainless Steel recipe is the unchanged mod recipe. Walls are shown here, and doors, roofs and roof tops have their own recipes for each type.[18]

How does Firmalife work with other mods?
4 parts
Most of Firmalife's links to other mods come from recipes that mix Firmalife items with items from TFC, Create, Create's addition mod and Advanced TFC Tech. A few of them are pack-specific tweaks, and I'll flag those as I go.[18]
TFC: the foundation
Firmalife is built on top of TFC, so much of its crafting uses TFC materials. Cheese wheels like Cheddar Cheese Wheel are made from Firmalife curds plus TFC salt. Bacon, Salsa and Pickled Egg are made from TFC foods. Planters such as Large Planter and Quad Planter use Compost, and Iron Composter upgrades the TFC Composter.[18]
Firmalife's wood furniture also follows TFC's wood types. Each type gets its own food shelf, hanger and jarbnet, for example Ash Food Shelf, Ash Hanger and Ash Jarbnet. They are crafted from that wood's TFC planks, lumber or logs, so what you can build depends on which trees you have access to.[18]

The Climate Station is crafted from a mix of TFC and vanilla materials. Metalwork also links up: Chromium Ingot and Stainless Steel Ingot are cast into TFC ingot molds, including the fire ingot mold.[8][18]

Bread connects to TFC too. Firmalife doughs use TFC flours, slices are cut from TFC breads, and the sandwich recipes produce TFC sandwich items such as Wheat Bread Sandwich.[18]

- any usable in sandwich food
- any knive
Recipe id: firmalife:crafting/wheat_slice_sandwich
The jar items for composting are TFC-linked as well. Compost Jar, Guano Jar and Rotten Compost Jar are crafted from TFC compost or guano items, and the pack has changed all three of those recipes. Opening a jar gives the TFC item back.[18]
Create and Create's addition mod
This is where the pack does its own tweaking. These Create-family recipes were changed or added by the pack so that they use Firmalife items:[18]
- Create's compacting recipe turns Chocolate into Dark Chocolate. The pack changed this recipe.[18]
- Create's filling recipe for Chocolate Glazed Berries takes Chocolate. The pack changed this recipe.[18]
- The addition mod's Chocolate Cake is made by filling a Baked Cake Base with Chocolate. The pack changed this recipe too.[18]
- Emptying Create's Builder's Tea or a honey bottle now also gives you an Empty Jar. The pack changed both emptying recipes.[18]
- Pressing a Pumpkin in Create gives Pumpkin Chunks. The pack added this recipe.[18]
Advanced TFC Tech: pineapple leather
Pineapple leather is the clearest Firmalife and Advanced TFC Tech link. You spin Pineapple Fiber into Pineapple Yarn with a TFC Spindle. Then you combine the yarn with an Pirn, and the loaded pirn goes into the Advanced TFC Tech power loom to produce Pineapple Leather.[10][18]

Quests that cross over
The biome map quests in the pack's shop chapter, such as "Ocean Biome Map" quest, each ask for 32 Beeswax, an iron block and a copper anvil. That means your beekeeping output is needed for these quests, which come after two earlier quests in that chapter.[16]
Which All the Mods - Gravitas quests use Firmalife?
3 parts
Firmalife shows up in three quest chapters in this pack. Two are progression chapters and one is a shop-style chapter. The Getting Started chapter introduces the mod first. The other chapters then build on it with a cellar and a set of greenhouse planters.[14][15][16]
Getting Started (Featuring Stone Anvils!)
This is where you meet the bee line. Each step unlocks the next one, in this order:[14]
- a quest in "Getting Started(Featuring Stone Anvils!)" asks you to have a Beehive Frame. It unlocks after an earlier quest in the same chapter.[14]
- a quest in "Getting Started(Featuring Stone Anvils!)" follows, asking for a Wooden Beehive.[14]
- a quest in "Getting Started(Featuring Stone Anvils!)" asks for Beeswax. a quest in "Getting Started(Featuring Stone Anvils!)" opens at the same point and asks for Raw Honey and an Empty Jar. Both come right after the hive quest.[14]
- a quest in "Getting Started(Featuring Stone Anvils!)" comes after the beeswax quest and asks for 8 Treated Lumber.[14]
Cellar and greenhouse chapter
The second chapter is about building proper infrastructure. Its title is an unresolved translation key in the data I have, so I can't give you its display name. It starts with a quest in "More Anvils, but this time they're Bronze", which asks for a Climate Station. That quest unlocks after a quest from earlier in the chapter.[15]
Next is "Cellar" quest, the cellar quest. It unlocks after the climate station quest and asks for a Sealed Door and Sealed Bricks.[15]
The greenhouse side of the chapter is a group of planter quests. Each one asks for a single planter and unlocks after the greenhouse quest plus one other quest. They can be done in any order:[15]
- a quest in "More Anvils, but this time they're Bronze": Trellis Planter[15]
- a quest in "More Anvils, but this time they're Bronze": Large Planter[15]
- a quest in "More Anvils, but this time they're Bronze": Hanging Planter[15]
- a quest in "More Anvils, but this time they're Bronze": Hydroponic Planter[15]
- a quest in "More Anvils, but this time they're Bronze": Quad Planter[15]
- a quest in "More Anvils, but this time they're Bronze": Bonsai Planter[15]
Shop chapter
The third chapter is a shop-style chapter with 14 quests named after map biomes. Every one of them has the same three tasks: 32 Beeswax, an Iron Block and a Copper Anvil. All 14 unlock after the same two earlier quests, so you can tackle them in any order once those are done.[16]
The 14 quests are "Ocean Biome Map" quest, "Deep Ocean Biome Map" quest, "Deep Ocean Trench Biome Map" quest, "Ocean Reef Biome Map" quest, "Shore Biome Map" quest, "Oceanic Mountains Biome Map" quest, "Oceanic Mountain River Biome Map" quest, "Oceanic Mountain Lake Biome Map" quest, "Volcanic Mountains Biome Map" quest, "Volcanic Mountain River Biome Map" quest, "Volcanic Mountain Lake Biome Map" quest, "Volcanic Oceanic Mountains Biome Map" quest, "Volcanic Oceanic Mountain Lake Biome Map" quest and "Volcanic Oceanic Mountain River Biome Map" quest.[16]
Unverified The quest data doesn't show what the shop quests give you as rewards, or what the map biome names are meant to do. I can't confirm either, so check in-game before you gather the materials.
Which Firmalife config options matter?
4 parts
Firmalife keeps its main settings in one server config file. Here is how this pack sets the options you're most likely to care about. All the tick values use the same conversion: 24,000 ticks is 1 day.[21]
Cheese and cellars
- general.cheeseAgedDays is 28. That's the number of days cheese spends in a cellar to become Aged.[21]
- general.cheeseVintageDays is 112 days in a cellar for cheese to become Vintage.[21]
- general.cellarLevel2Temperature is 0. Below this average temperature, stronger decay modifiers apply to cellar blocks.[21]
- general.cellarLevel3Temperature is -12. Below this average temperature, even stronger decay modifiers apply.[21]
Drying, smoking and composting times
- general.dryingTicks is 12,000 ticks to dry something on a drying mat.[21]
- general.solarDryingTicks is 1,000 ticks to dry something on a solar drier.[21]
- general.smokingTicks is 8,000 ticks to smoke something on a string.[21]
- general.ironComposterTicks is 72,000 ticks for an iron composter to finish.[21]
Oven behavior
- general.ovenCureTemperature is 600. This is the minimum temperature for an oven to start curing.[21]
- general.ovenCureTicks is 2,000 ticks for an oven to cure.[21]
- general.ovenRequirePeel is true, so ovens hurt you if you touch them without a peel in hand.[21]
Other toggles
- general.enableBeeSwarm is true, so provoked bees can swarm and hurt you.[21]
- general.enableSeedBalls is true, so you can throw seed balls.[21]
- general.hollowShellCapacity is 100 mB. The file's own comment lists 100 as the default, so this one matches it.[21]
Unverified The pack's config file doesn't list mod defaults for most of these options, apart from the hollow shell capacity. I can't confirm which of the values above the pack changed, so treat them as this pack's settings rather than as changes.
