What is Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks?
2 parts
Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks is an RPG-inspired spellcasting mod. You fight dangerous wizards, raid structures, delve through dungeons, collect resources and hunt for powerful magical items. This pack ships version 1.21.1-3.14.2.[1][2]
It's aimed at players who want magic they earn through adventure and combat. You can't just craft your way to power with basic materials: you'll need to get out there, explore and fight. Every spell has a rarity, a level and a school. Gear tied to each school lets you become a master of one school, or you can mix and match and play as a jack of all trades.[3][4]
How progression flows
- Early game is all about exploring and looting magic structures, each guarded by a powerful mage. Scrolls are your first taste of magic. Instead of burning them, inscribe them into a spell book at the Inscription Table so you can cast them again and again.[5]
- Mid game opens up once you reach Nether-level resources. The Scroll Forge lets you craft scrolls: the ink sets the rarity and the focus item sets the school. Runestones from magical structures unlock stronger armor.[6]
- Late game needs netherite and lots of basic resources, and it runs through the Arcane Anvil. You use it to level up scrolls, upgrade armor and spell books, and imbue weapons with spells.[7]
In this pack's quests
The mod has its own quest chapter. It kicks off with "Iron's Spells 'N Spellbooks" quest, which asks for Arcane Essence, and then walks you through the key blocks, the inks, spell books and the "Classes" quest quest, which covers the 8 classes (1 of them secret).[3]
The mod is also part of the ATM Star path in the chapter "Chapter 3: The ATM Star". After "Iron's Spells and Spellbooks" quest, which also asks for Arcane Essence, you need to make a Lightning Upgrade Orb for "Lightning Upgrade Orb" quest and a Wither Skull scroll for "Wither Skull Scroll" quest. That scroll has to be Level 10 and Legendary, so expect to upgrade it.[8]
How do you get started with Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks?
5 parts
Welcome in! The early game in Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks is mostly about exploring and looting, not crafting your way out of a hole. Here's the order I'd tackle things in this pack.[3][5]
Step one: grab scrolls and make an Inscription Table
Scrolls are your first taste of magic. You can consume one to cast its spell, but it's better to save it and inscribe it into a spell book, so you can use it again and again. That job is done at the Inscription Table. You can craft it, or find it in most of the mod's structures.[3][5]

Step two: make your first spell book
Beginner spell books can be crafted from basic materials. The cheapest is the Flimsy Journal, which holds only 5 spells, but it gets you casting.[3][5]
The Ironbound Tome is a small step up, with room for one more spell than the Flimsy Journal.[3]
Step three: collect Arcane Essence
Arcane Essence is one of the mod's basic materials. To get it in high quantities you need to focus on raiding magical structures. Combine it with leather armor to craft Wandering Magician armor, an early source of extra max mana.[3][5][6]
Step four: upgrade to the Apprentice's Spell Book
Intermediate spell books are crafted with nether resources. The Apprentice's Spell Book needs Hogskin, which Hoglins drop, and it holds 8 spells.[3][6][9]

Step five: build the crafting stations
The Alchemist Cauldron needs Cinder Essence, which drops from Ancient Knights. You wake them by breaking armor piles in the Nether. In return, the cauldron brews ink up to higher rarities, and the quest book says it can also give you a chance at ink from a scroll.[3][7][9]

The Scroll Forge unlocks once you reach nether-level resources. It crafts scrolls from ink, paper and a focus. The ink sets the rarity and the focus sets the school.[3][6]
Last comes the Arcane Anvil, the most powerful crafting station. It levels up scrolls, upgrades armor and spell books, and imbues weapons with spells.[3][7]

How does Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks work?
9 parts
Here's the thing to know up front: the sources for Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks describe crafting stations, not power networks, fluid pipes or item-pipe automation. The real mechanics are how scrolls, ink, spell books and upgrades flow through those stations, and that's what this section covers.[1][5][6]
Inscription Table: getting spells into books
A spell book only works properly once you inscribe spells into it, and you do that at the Inscription Table by using scrolls. You can get a scroll back out of a spell book later, but doing so uninscribes the spell.[5]
Each tier of craftable spell book you make increases its slot count and often adds extra bonuses, so it can hold more spells and more powerful ones.[10]
Scrolls
Scrolls can be found in chests, looted from mobs, or crafted. Each one holds a spell with a level, a bit like an enchanted book. You can use a scroll on its own to cast the spell, which skips mana costs and cooldown but uses up the scroll. Most of the time you'll want to inscribe it into a spell book, or recycle it in the Alchemist Cauldron to turn it into more useful spells.[11]
Scroll Forge: ink, paper and a focus
Once you reach nether-level resources, the Scroll Forge opens up a new way to gain power. It crafts scrolls from ink, paper and a focus. The ink sets the rarity (and so the level), while the focus sets the spell's school.[6]
Ink works as a ceiling on what you can craft. Common ink makes the lowest-level spells, and if a spell's lowest level is above common, common ink can't craft it. The same rule applies to every other ink tier. Rare and higher inks come mainly from magic treasure chests or from killing spellcasting mobs. The rarest ink crafts the most powerful spells, and some spells have several legendary levels that need the Arcane Anvil to reach.[12]
School focuses
Every school has a Focus item that you use as the crafting ingredient for that school. These are the ones the in-game guide lists:[4]
- Fire: Blaze Rod.[4]
- Ice: Frozen Bones.[4]
- Lightning: Bottle o' Lightning.[4]
- Holy: the Divine Pearl.[4]
- Ender: Ender Pearl.[4]
- Blood: Blood Vial.[4]
- Evocation: Emerald.[4]
- Nature: Poisonous Potato.[4]
- Eldritch: Echo Shard, but only after you've learned an Eldritch spell from a restored manuscript. You can't craft or cast Eldritch spells straight away.[4]

Arcane Anvil: the upgrade station
The Arcane Anvil is the most powerful crafting station in the mod. It levels up scrolls, upgrades armor and spell books, and imbues weapons with spells. To raise a scroll's level, you combine it with the ink of the next rarity up.[7][11]

Unique spell books have locked spells, but you can still improve them. Combine the book in the Arcane Anvil with a higher-level scroll of the same spell, and the locked spell goes up a level.[13]
Upgrade orbs
Upgrades are the final stage of progression. By default, any armor and any spell book can be upgraded. The in-game guide says an orb for a specific attribute is made from a base Empty Upgrade Orb plus 8 runes of that attribute. The recipe block below shows the exact in-pack version for the Blood orb.[7][9]

The Alchemist Cauldron is where you recycle scrolls into more useful spells. It can also cook mobs placed inside it for blood, the same job a vanilla cauldron does when it's heated by a campfire underneath.[11][14]

How do you progress through Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks?
5 parts
The mod's own in-game guide splits progression into early, mid and late game. Use this page as a roadmap: loot first, then nether-level resources, then netherite and the Arcane Anvil. The pack's quests add detail on spell books, ink, classes and armor along the way.[3][5][6][7][15]
Early game: loot, scrolls and your first book
Early progression is all about exploring and looting. Magic structures are scattered across the world, but each one is home to a powerful mage who won't welcome you. Scrolls are your first taste of magic. You can consume one to cast it, but it's better to inscribe it into a spell book at an Inscription Table, where it can be used repeatedly.[5]

Beginner spell books are craftable from basic materials. The Flimsy Journal is the cheapest and holds a total of 5 spells. The Ironbound Tome holds one more than that. The Rotten Spell Book can be found in most chests and holds 8 spells, but gives you less spell resistance.[3][5]
For armor, Arcane Essence can be combined with leather armor into Wandering Magician gear, an early source of extra max mana. The pack's quests also call the Scarecrow outfit very simple, cheap and helpful for the early game.[5][16]

Mid game: nether resources, ink and the Scroll Forge
Once you reach nether-level resources, the Scroll Forge opens up. It crafts scrolls from ink, paper and a focus item. The ink sets the rarity (and so the level), and the focus sets the school. Intermediate spell books also become craftable at this stage, and you'll want lots of arcane essence, which means raiding magical structures.[3][6]
The Apprentice's Spell Book needs Hogskin from Hoglins and holds 8 spells. The Enchanted Spell Book has 10 slots and a big mana boost.[3][6]

Ink comes in a ladder of rarities, and each rarity can only craft spells whose lowest level is at or below it. You find the higher inks in magic treasure or by killing spellcasting mobs, but the Alchemist Cauldron can also brew up the ladder. It needs Cinder Essence, which drops from Ancient Knights awakened by breaking armor piles in the nether.[7][9][12]

Classes and school armor
The "Classes" quest quest introduces runes. You get a Blank Runestone by killing the Dead King or by wiping an Inscribed Rune clean with a Shriving Stone. There are 8 classes (1 of them secret), each with its own scrolls, focus material, upgrades and outfits. Class mages always drop a rune of their school, so keep an eye out for runestones in magical structures.[3][6]
In the pack's quest chapter, each of the school quests below comes after the Classes quest, and each has its own outfit and upgrade orb quests after it. The schools and their foci are:[3]
- Fire ("Fire" quest): Blaze Rod focus.[3][4]
- Ice ("Ice" quest): Frozen Bone focus, dropped by Strays.[3][4]
- Lightning ("Lightning" quest): Bottle o' Lightning focus, which you get by using an Empty Bottle on a Charged Creeper.[3][4]
- Holy ("Holy" quest): Divine Pearl focus, which is crafted.[3][4]
- Ender ("Ender" quest): Ender Pearl focus.[3][4]
- Blood ("Blood" quest): Blood Vial focus, which you get by cooking a mob or player in a cauldron.[3][4]
- Evocation ("Evocation" quest): Emerald focus. You can also get the rune from the Archevoker.[3][4]
- Nature ("Nature" quest): Poisonous Potato focus.[3][4]

The in-game guide describes school armor as built from arcane cloth and a school rune. The pack's recipes for the outfits, such as the Archevoker Hat, are instead smithing upgrades of the matching Wizard armor piece with the school rune, so follow this recipe.[7][9]

Late game: netherite and the Arcane Anvil

The Druidic Tome has 10 slots and boosts Nature spells, but it needs a Rotten Spell Book to craft. Some spell books can't be crafted at all. The Blaze Instruction Manual is a rare Blaze drop with 10 slots and a Fire boost. The Grimoire of Evokation drops from Evokers and Archevokers. The Necronomicon comes from the Dead King. Their built-in spells are locked, but you can raise their level in the Arcane Anvil with a higher-level scroll of the same spell.[3][13]

Upgrades are the final form of progression. By default, any armor and any spell book can be upgraded. Orbs of a specific attribute are made from a base Empty Upgrade Orb and a rune of that attribute, and you add them to gear in the Arcane Anvil. The pack has a quest for each school's orb, such as "Fire Upgrade Orb" quest.[3][7][9]

The last class: Eldritch
Eldritch is the last class, and you can't craft or cast its spells right away. Ancient Knowledge Fragments are found in Ancient City chests, and an echo shard combines them into an Eldritch Manuscript. Each manuscript is single use: consuming it teaches you one Eldritch spell, after which the echo shard serves as the focus. The quests for this are "Into the Ancient City" quest and then "Eldritch" quest.[3][4][9]

How does Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks work with other mods?
4 parts
Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks doesn't live in its own bubble in this pack. Its items show up in a handful of recipes shared with other mods, and some of those recipes are pack changes or additions. Here's what the recipe data confirms.[9]
Spellbook items in other mods' crafting
The Allthemodium Spell Book is an upgrade of this mod's top spell book. You take an Ancient Codex to a smithing table, and the result is the Allthemodium version. This is a recipe from the other mod itself, not a pack change.[9]

Arcane Essence and Productive Bees
Productive Bees can produce Arcane Essence. A centrifuge recipe, changed by the pack, outputs Arcane Essence together with Wax. The recipe data doesn't list item inputs for it, so check the in-game recipe viewer for what you need to feed the centrifuge.[9]

Mithril through Theurgy
Mithril normally comes from mining. The mod's own guide describes it as a rare Overworld ore found below y = -38, unexposed to air, and needing a netherite pickaxe. The pack adds a second route: a Theurgy incubation recipe that produces an Mithril Ingot from a Mercury Shard, an alchemical salt and a custom sulfur item.[7][9]
A pack change to the guide book
The pack changes how you get the Iron's Spells Guide Book, and a plain Book is part of it. Here is the exact in-pack recipe.[9]
Which All the Mods 10 quests use Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks?
7 parts
This mod shows up in four quest chapters: its own chapter, Basic Armor, Chapter 3: The ATM Star and Basic Tools. The biggest one by far is the mod's own chapter, so we'll start there.[3][8][16][17]
Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks chapter
The intro quest "Iron's Spells 'N Spellbooks" quest asks you to hand in Arcane Essence. Several other quests in the chapter list no prerequisite, so you can do them in any order. They ask you to bring in these blocks: the Inscription Table (a quest in "Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks"), the Alchemist Cauldron (a quest in "Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks"), the Arcane Anvil (a quest in "Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks") and the Scroll Forge (a quest in "Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks").[3]
The same unordered group also has one quest for each ink rarity: "Common Ink" quest, "Uncommon Ink" quest, "Rare Ink" quest, "Epic Ink" quest and "Legendary Ink" quest. Each one just asks for the matching ink item, for example Epic Ink.[3]
Classes and what unlocks after them
"Classes" quest asks for a Blank Runestone. Its text explains that there are 8 classes, one of them secret. Every class quest below lists Classes as its prerequisite and asks for that class's rune. Each class then unlocks an upgrade orb quest and an outfit quest.[3]
- Fire: "Fire" quest (Fire Rune), then "Fire Upgrade Orb" quest and "Pyromancer Outfit" quest.[3]
- Ice: "Ice" quest (Ice Rune), then "Ice Upgrade Orb" quest and "Cryomancecr Outfit" quest.[3]
- Lightning: "Lightning" quest (Lightning Rune), then "Lightning Upgrade Orb" quest and "Electromancer Outfit" quest.[3]
- Nature: "Nature" quest (Nature Rune), then "Nature Upgrade Orb" quest and "Plagued Outfit" quest.[3]
- Ender: "Ender" quest (Ender Rune), then "Ender Upgrade Orb" quest and "Shadow-Walker Outfit" quest.[3]
- Evocation: "Evocation" quest (Evocation Rune), then "Evocation Upgrade Orb" quest and "Archevoker Outfit" quest.[3]
- Blood: "Blood" quest (Blood Rune), then "Blood Upgrade Orb" quest and "Cultist Outfit" quest.[3]
- Holy: "Holy" quest (Holy Rune), then "Holy Upgrade Orb" quest and "Priest Outfit" quest.[3]
Spell books
The spell book quests all list a prerequisite called SpellBooks!, and they each ask for the book itself. The quest text gives slot counts for several of them: the Flimsy Journal holds 5 spells, while the Rotten Spell Book and Apprentice's Spell Book hold 8. The Enchanted Spell Book and Blaze Instruction Manual have 10 slots, and the Dragonskin Spell Book and Ancient Codex have 12.[3]
- Early books: "Flimsy Journal" quest, "Ironbound Journal" quest, "Rotten Spell Book" quest and "Apprentice's Spell Book" quest.[3]
- Later books: "Enchanted Spell Book" quest, "Dragonskin Spell Book" quest and "Ancient Codex" quest.[3]
- Special-source books: "Blaze Instruction Manual" quest, "Necronomicom" quest, "Grimore of Evokation" quest and "Villager Bible" quest.[3]
- "Druidic Tome" quest is the odd one out. It requires "Rotten Spell Book" quest first and asks for the Druidic Tome.[3]
The last class
"Into the Ancient City" quest asks for an Ancient Knowledge Fragment and comes after a quest called The Last Class... Once you finish it, "Eldritch" quest follows and asks for the Eldritch Manuscript.[3]
Basic Armor
This chapter has one quest per armor set, and none of them list a prerequisite. They cover the Cultist ("Cultist Outfit" quest), Electromancer ("Electromancer Outfit" quest), Archevoker ("Archevoker Outfit" quest), Shadow-Walker ("Shadow-Walker Outfit" quest), Pyromancer ("Pyromancer Outfit" quest), Priest ("Priest Outfit" quest), Plagued ("Plagued Outfit" quest) and Cryomancer ("Cryomancer Outfit" quest) outfits. Each one asks for the full set of helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots.[16]
There are three extra sets with no class attached: "Wandering Magician Gear" quest (Wandering Magician), "Scarecrow Outfit" quest (Scarecrow) and "Netherite Battlemage Outfit" quest (Netherite Battlemage). The quest text calls the Scarecrow set simple and cheap, and helpful for early game.[16]
Chapter 3: The ATM Star
"Iron's Spells and Spellbooks" quest asks for Arcane Essence again and points you to the mod's own quest page. "Lightning Upgrade Orb" quest and "Wither Skull Scroll" quest both come after it. The first asks for a Lightning Upgrade Orb. The second asks for a Scroll, and its text says the scroll needs to be Level 10 and Legendary.[8]
Basic Tools
The quests here that involve the mod both come after the chapter's Basic Tools! quest. a quest in "Basic Tools" asks for the Spellbreaker, and the quest labels it 10 Attack Damage. a quest in "Basic Tools" is labeled 7 Attack Damage and accepts either Magehunter or the Sky Sword from Nature's Aura.[17]
