What is Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks?
2 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.5 guide
Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks is an RPG-inspired spellcasting mod. You fight dangerous wizards, raid structures, delve through dungeons and hunt down powerful magical items. All the Mods 10 4.5 ships version 1.21.1-3.14.1, and the mod has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 2.25 or earlier.[1][2]
This mod is for you if you want to play as a proper wizard. You cast spells from casting implements that often give passive bonuses too. Every spell belongs to a school of magic with its own theme and gear, so you can become a master of a single school or mix and match as a jack of all trades.[3][4]
How progression works
- Early game is all about exploring and looting. Magic structures are packed with loot, but each one has a powerful mage guarding it. Scrolls are your first taste of magic. Instead of burning them, save them and inscribe them into a spell book at the Inscription Table so you can cast them again and again.[5]
- Mid game starts once you reach Nether-level resources. That unlocks the Scroll Forge, which lets you craft your own scrolls. The ink decides the spell's rarity and the focus decides its school. You also start collecting runestones from magical structures to craft stronger armor.[6]
- Late game needs netherite and lots of basic resources, and it revolves around the Arcane Anvil. You use it to level up scrolls, upgrade armor and spell books, and imbue weapons with spells. Upgrades are the final stage of progression.[7]
In the pack's quests
All the Mods 10 has a dedicated quest chapter for this mod. It covers the key stations, such as the Inscription Table, Scroll Forge, Alchemist Cauldron and Arcane Anvil. It also covers every ink tier from Common Ink up to Legendary Ink, plus spell books, school armor sets and upgrade orbs.[8]
How do you get started with Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks?
6 parts
Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks is an RPG-inspired spellcasting mod: you fight dangerous wizards, raid structures, delve through dungeons, collect resources and find powerful magical items. Your early game is dominated by exploring and looting, so the first steps are less about a big machine setup and more about getting a book, a table and something to inscribe.[1][5]
Step 1: Pick up scrolls
Scrolls are your first taste of magic. They can be found in chests, looted from mobs, or crafted, and each one holds a spell with a level, much like an enchanted book. You can right-click a scroll to cast its spell for free, ignoring mana costs and cooldowns, but the scroll is consumed. Early on it is better to save them until you can inscribe them into a spell book and use the spell over and over.[5][9]
Step 2: Craft your first spell book
Beginner spell books can be crafted from basic materials, and each further tier you craft increases the slot count and often adds extra bonuses, raising the power and quantity of spells it can hold. Start with the cheapest one you can make.[5][10]

The pack's quest chapter tracks these books, so ticking off a quest in "?" for the Flimsy Journal and a quest in "?" for the Ironbound Tome is a good early checklist.[11]
Step 3: Build the Inscription Table
To actually use a spell book you must inscribe spells into it with the Inscription Table, using scrolls. Scrolls can be pulled back out of a book later, but doing so uninscribes the spell.[5]

Crafting it also completes a quest in "?" in the pack's quest book.[11]
Step 4: Get a casting implement
Casting implements are items you right-click to cast your active spell, and most of them also give passive benefits for a dedicated wizard playstyle. A simple stick is all it takes to get started.[3]
Step 5: Hunt Arcane Essence
Arcane Essence is one of the basic materials that can be found sparsely even in vanilla structures. Combine it with leather armor to craft Wandering Magician armor, an early source of additional max mana, which makes a real difference before you have any school armor.[5]
The pack asks for it twice: once as a quest in "?" in the mod's own chapter and again as a quest in "?", which gates the a quest in "?" scroll objective.[11][12]
What to aim at next
Once you have a book, a table and a few scrolls, the next milestones are the Alchemist Cauldron for recycling scrolls into more useful spells, and eventually the Scroll Forge once you reach nether-level resources, which lets you craft scrolls from ink, paper and a school focus.[6][9]
Ink is worth grabbing whenever you see it. Common ink crafts the lowest level of spells, and if a spell's lowest level is above common it cannot be crafted with common ink; the same rule applies to every other ink tier. The pack has a quest for each tier, starting with a quest in "?" for Common Ink.[11][13]
How does Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks work?
9 parts
Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks doesn't run on power, fluids or item pipes. Its "machines" are three crafting stations (the Inscription Table, the Scroll Forge and the Arcane Anvil) plus the Alchemist Cauldron, and the resources that feed them come from exploring, raiding magic structures and killing wizards rather than from automation.[1][5]
The loop is simple once you see it: scrolls carry spells, spell books hold spells, and the stations move spells between them and make them stronger.[5][9]
Scrolls: the spell container
Every scroll contains one spell at a specific level, much like an enchanted book. You can find them in chests, loot them from mobs, or craft them yourself later on.[9]
You have three things you can do with a scroll. Use it directly to cast its spell: this skips the mana cost and the cooldown entirely, but consumes the scroll. Inscribe it into a spell book so you can cast it over and over. Or recycle it in the Alchemist Cauldron and turn it into something more useful.[9]
The Inscription Table
The Inscription Table is the gateway to actually using a spell book. You can't write spells into a book by hand; you feed the table scrolls, and it inscribes their spells into the book. This is your first real station, and beginner spell books are craftable from basic materials to pair with it.[5]
Each tier of craftable spell book you make increases the number of spell slots it has, and higher tiers often carry extra bonuses on top, raising both the power and the number of spells you can keep loaded.[10]

The Scroll Forge and the ink system
Once you reach nether-tier resources you unlock the Scroll Forge, which flips you from finding scrolls to manufacturing them. A Scroll Forge craft takes three things: ink, paper and a focus. The ink decides the rarity and therefore the level of the spell you get, and the focus decides which school the spell comes from.[6]
Ink is tiered, and each tier gates the spells it can produce. Common ink is the most plentiful and crafts the lowest level of spells; if a spell's lowest level sits above common, common ink simply can't make it, and the same gating applies to every ink above it. Uncommon ink handles slightly more powerful spells, while rare, epic and legendary inks come primarily from magic treasure chests and from killing spellcasting mobs. Legendary ink crafts the most powerful spells.[13]
Focuses and schools
Every spell belongs to a school of magic, and every school has a Focus: a representative item used as a crafting ingredient. Fire uses a Blaze Rod and leans on damage and damage over time. Ice uses Frozen Bones for damage and crowd control. Lightning uses a Bottle o' Lightning for concentrated damage. Holy uses the Divine Pearl for support, healing and buffing allies. Ender uses an Ender Pearl and spans damage, utility and mobility. Blood uses a Blood Vial for necromancy, wither and self-buffing damage. Evocation uses an Emerald and covers the broadest range of offensive, defensive and utility spells. Nature uses a Poisonous Potato and focuses on debuffs finished off with damage.[4]
Eldritch is the odd one out. You can't craft or cast Eldritch spells straight away. Instead you find shreds of ancient Eldritch manuscripts scattered through the world and piece them back together with the help of an echo shard. A restored manuscript is consumed to learn a single Eldritch spell, which unlocks crafting and casting for it, and from then on the Echo Shard acts as the focus.[4]
Schools also drive your gear. Each school can be empowered by school-specific equipment, so you can specialise hard into one school or mix and match into a jack of all trades.[4]
The Arcane Anvil
The Arcane Anvil is the most powerful crafting station in the mod, and it's the engine of the late game. It levels up your scrolls, upgrades armor and spell books, and imbues weapons with spells.[7]
To level a scroll, you combine it in the Anvil with the ink rarity matching its next level. That's the main way to push a spell past the level you originally found or forged it at.[9]
Unique spell books work a little differently. They drop from certain mobs with spells already inscribed, and those spells can't be removed or edited. You can still improve them though: put a unique book in the Arcane Anvil together with a higher-level scroll of a spell that book already has, and the locked spell's level goes up.[14]

Runes, upgrade orbs and armor
Runestones are the mid-game rare material. You find them in magical structures, and class mages always drop a rune of their own school. Runes feed both school armor and the upgrade system.[6]
School armor follows a single template: arcane cloth plus a particular school rune. That's why the Cryomancer, Archevoker and Cultist sets all look structurally identical in the crafting grid, only the rune changes.[7]

Swap the Ice Rune for another school's rune to get that school's set.
Upgrades are the final layer of progression. By default, any armor piece as well as spell books can be upgraded. An upgrade orb for a specific attribute is made from a base upgrade orb and 8 runes of the attribute you want.[7]

The Alchemist Cauldron
The Alchemist Cauldron is your recycling station: it turns scrolls you don't want into more useful spells. It also handles blood. You can get a Blood Vial by heating a vanilla cauldron with a campfire underneath and cooking mobs placed inside, or by using an Alchemist Cauldron to do the same job.[9][15]

Casting implements
Casting implements are the items you right-click to cast your active spell, and most of them also give passive benefits so a dedicated wizard build is worth committing to. A plain stick is enough to get started; fancier staves add style and power on top. Some are found rather than made: pieces of a frosted staff are rumoured to lie around the Overworld, with the Cryomancer's tower holding research on them, and one ancient summoning scepter can only be taken from its undead owner.[3]

Late-game materials
Two materials gate the deepest tier. Mithril is a rare Overworld ore found below y = -38, only in blocks unexposed to air, and it needs a netherite pickaxe to mine. Cinder Essence drops from Ancient Knights, which you awaken by breaking armor piles in the Nether.[7][15]
Mithril Scrap is the backbone of the mod's jewellery: rings and amulets are built around it, giving you passive spell bonuses to slot alongside your armor.[16]

The pack changed this recipe from the mod's default.
That amulet is worth the mithril: it makes your Long Casts uninterruptible, which matters a lot once you're relying on channelled spells in a fight.[15]
Unverified Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks has no config files stored for this pack, so any tweaks to mana rates, spell damage or structure spawn rates could not be checked here.
How do you progress through Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks?
5 parts
The pack's quest chapter for this mod tracks the mod's own progression curve: loot and scrolls first, then an Inscription Table and cheap spell books, then nether-tier crafting, and finally runes, school armor and upgrade orbs. If you follow the chapter top to bottom you'll cover the whole path without having to guess what comes next.[5][11]
Early game: scrolls and your first spell book
Early progression is dominated by exploring and looting. The world is full of magic loot, especially in the new magic structures scattered across the land, but each one is home to a powerful mage who won't be happy to see you.[5]
Scrolls are your first taste of magic. You can consume one to cast the spell it holds, but it's better to save it until you can inscribe it into a spell book for repeated use. Scrolls can be found in chests, looted from mobs, or crafted, and each holds a spell with a level, much like an enchanted book.[5][9]
That means the Inscription Table is your real first milestone, and the pack gives it its own quest. You can pull scrolls back out of a book later, but doing so uninscribes the spell.[5][11]

Beginner spell books are cheap. The quest chapter asks for the Flimsy Journal and the Ironbound Tome at this stage, and each further tier you craft increases the book's slot count and often adds extra bonuses.[10][11]
Mid game: the Scroll Forge and arcane cloth
Once you reach nether-level resources you unlock the Scroll Forge, which is a whole new way to gain power. It crafts scrolls from ink, paper and a focus: the ink sets the rarity and therefore the level, while the focus sets the school.[6][11]
Crafting Shaped
| Empty slot | Empty slot | |
Recipe id: irons_spellbooks:scroll_forge
The pack has a quest for each ink rung, so treat them as your mid-game ladder: Common Ink crafts the lowest level of spells, Uncommon Ink slightly more powerful ones, then Rare Ink, Epic Ink and finally Legendary Ink for the most powerful spells. If a spell's lowest level is above common, common ink simply can't make it.[11][13]
Rare ink turns up regularly in magic treasure chests or from killing spellcasting mobs, and the same sources are the best place to find epic ink and the other high-rarity inks.[13]
Intermediate spell books come from nether resources at this point, including the Apprentice's Spell Book and the Enchanted Spell Book, both of which have quests. Hogskin for them drops from Hoglins.[6][11]

This is also where you start crafting stronger armor from Arcane Cloth. To get arcane essence in quantity you'll want to focus on raiding magical structures, and you should keep an eye out for runestones there too, since class mages always drop a rune of their school.[6]
Runes and school armor
The rune branch of the quest chapter starts at the Blank Runestone, and every school rune quest sits directly behind it: fire, ice, lightning, holy, ender, blood, evocation and nature. Each rune is made from a blank runestone plus that school's focus.[11][16]

The other schools follow the same pattern with their own focus.
Each school has a representative focus item used as a crafting ingredient: a Blaze Rod for Fire, Frozen Bones for Ice, a Bottle o' Lightning for Lightning, a Divine Pearl for Holy, an Ender Pearl for Ender, a Blood Vial for Blood, an Emerald for Evocation, and a Poisonous Potato for Nature.[4]
School armor is made from arcane cloth and a particular school rune, all following the same template. In the pack's quests each armor set hangs off its matching rune quest, so the rune you chase decides the set you get.[7][11]
- Fire rune gives the Pyromancer set: Pyromancer Hat, Pyromancer Robe, Pyromancer Leggings and Pyromancer Boots.[11][16]
- Ice rune gives the Cryomancer set, and lightning rune gives the Electromancer set.[11][16]
- Holy rune gives the Priest set, and blood rune gives the Cultist set.[11][16]
- Ender rune gives the Shadow-Walker set, nature rune gives the Plagued set, and evocation rune gives the Archevoker set.[11][16]

Late game: the Arcane Anvil and upgrades
Late game arrives when you have netherite and vast quantities of basic resources, and it's powered by the Arcane Anvil. It's the most powerful crafting station in the mod, used to level up scrolls, upgrade armor and spell books, and imbue weapons with spells.[7][11]

Scrolls are upgraded in the anvil by combining them with the matching rarity of ink for their next level. Some spells have multiple legendary levels, which means the Arcane Anvil is the only way to reach them.[9][13]
The best craftable books land here. The quest chapter asks for the Ancient Codex and the Dragonskin Spell Book; the Ruined Book they need is found in Ancient Cities, and Dragonskin is dropped by the Ender Dragon.[7][11]

Upgrades are the final form of progression: by default any armor and any spell book can be upgraded. Upgrade orbs of a specific attribute are made from a base upgrade orb and 8 runes of the desired attribute, and the pack puts an upgrade orb quest behind each rune quest.[7][11]

Recipe id: irons_spellbooks:fire_upgrade_orb
Every school orb follows the same pattern.
Two late materials are worth planning for. Mithril is a rare Overworld ore found below y = -38, only where it isn't exposed to air, and it needs a netherite pickaxe. Cinder Essence drops from Ancient Knights, which you awaken by breaking armor piles in the Nether.[7]
Side branches
Not every book is craftable. The chapter also tracks named and unique books like the Villager Bible, the Blaze Instruction Manual, the Rotten Spell Book, the Grimoire of Evokation and the Necronomicon. Unique books come with spells already inscribed that can't be removed or edited, though you can raise a locked spell's level in the Arcane Anvil using a higher-level scroll of that same spell.[11][14]
The Druidic Tome quest sits behind the rotten spell book quest, which matches how it's made: strong magic still lingers in a rotten book, and it can be blessed anew if the proper remedy is applied.[10][11]

Eldritch is its own track. You can't craft or cast Eldritch spells straight away; instead you find shreds of ancient manuscripts around the world and piece them back together with an echo shard. The pack's quest for the Eldritch Manuscript sits behind the Ancient Knowledge Fragment quest for exactly that reason. Once restored, a manuscript is consumed to learn a single Eldritch spell, after which the echo shard acts as the focus.[4][11]

How does Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks work with other mods?
5 parts
Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks connects to the rest of the pack mostly through crafting. A few mod recipes use its items, and the pack adds some late-game recipes of its own that pull in its upgrade orbs. Here's where those links show up.[16]
Allthemodium Spell Book
The Allthemodium Spell Book is made at a smithing table, and your Ancient Codex (the Ancient Codex) is the base for it. It also needs an allthemodium smithing item and an allthemodium ingot, which come from the tags listed in the recipe.[16]

Productive Bees
Arcane Essence shows up in Productive Bees too. A centrifuge recipe produces Arcane Essence along with Wax. There's also a crafting recipe that combines Arcane Essence with a configurable bee. It gives you the bee back, plus a configurable bee spawn egg.[16]

Quests
Outside the mod's own quest chapter, the pack's chapter_2_the_star also has quests for Iron's Spells items. These ask you to obtain Arcane Essence (a quest in "?"), a Lightning Upgrade Orb (a quest in "?"), a Fire Upgrade Orb (a quest in "?") and a Scroll (a quest in "?"). The orb and Scroll quests all unlock after the Arcane Essence quest.[12]
Which All the Mods 10 quests use Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks?
5 parts
This mod has its own quest chapter in this pack, and every quest in it asks you to obtain an item or a full armor set. The quests have no titles, so this guide refers to them by their IDs. Each quest lists what it comes after, which gives the order below.[11]
