What is Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks?
2 parts
Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks is an RPG-inspired spellcasting mod. You fight dangerous wizards, raid structures, delve through dungeons and hunt down powerful magical items. All the Mods 10 4.5 ships version 1.21.1-3.14.1, and the mod has been in the pack since All the Mods 10 2.25 or earlier.[1][2]
This mod is for you if you want to play as a proper wizard. You cast spells from casting implements that often give passive bonuses too. Every spell belongs to a school of magic with its own theme and gear, so you can become a master of a single school or mix and match as a jack of all trades.[3][4]
How progression works
- Early game is all about exploring and looting. Magic structures are packed with loot, but each one has a powerful mage guarding it. Scrolls are your first taste of magic. Instead of burning them, save them and inscribe them into a spell book at the Inscription Table so you can cast them again and again.[5]
- Mid game starts once you reach Nether-level resources. That unlocks the Scroll Forge, which lets you craft your own scrolls. The ink decides the spell's rarity and the focus decides its school. You also start collecting runestones from magical structures to craft stronger armor.[6]
- Late game needs netherite and lots of basic resources, and it revolves around the Arcane Anvil. You use it to level up scrolls, upgrade armor and spell books, and imbue weapons with spells. Upgrades are the final stage of progression.[7]
In the pack's quests
All the Mods 10 has a dedicated quest chapter for this mod. It covers the key stations, such as the Inscription Table, Scroll Forge, Alchemist Cauldron and Arcane Anvil. It also covers every ink tier from Common Ink up to Legendary Ink, plus spell books, school armor sets and upgrade orbs.[8]
How do you get started with Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks?
5 parts
Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks is an RPG-style spellcasting mod. You'll fight dangerous wizards, raid structures, delve through dungeons and collect powerful magical items. The early game is mostly about exploring and looting, so get ready to travel before you start crafting.[1][5]
Step 1: Go looting for magic
The world is full of magic loot, especially in the mod's magic structures. Each of those structures is home to a powerful mage who won't be happy to see you. You can also find some basic materials, in small amounts, in vanilla structures.[5]
Two things are worth collecting right away. The first is Arcane Essence, which the pack tracks in quests a quest in "?" and a quest in "?". Raiding magical structures is how you get it in large quantities.[6][8][10]
The second is scrolls. They come from chests, drop from mobs, or can be crafted. Each Scroll holds one spell at a certain level, a bit like an enchanted book. In the pack, a quest in "?" asks you to get one after you've found Arcane Essence.[10][11]
Step 2: Build an Inscription Table
To use a spell book properly, you have to inscribe spells into it with scrolls at an Inscription Table. You can take a scroll back out of a spell book later, but doing so uninscribes the spell. The pack's quest for the table is a quest in "?".[5][8]

Step 3: Craft your first spell book
You can craft beginner spell books from basic materials. The Flimsy Journal and the Ironbound Tome both have recipes that fit this stage, and each one has a quest in the chapter: a quest in "?" and a quest in "?". Each higher tier of craftable spell book gives you more spell slots and often extra bonuses.[5][8][12][13]
Step 4: Wandering Magician armor
Once you have some Arcane Essence, combine it with leather armor to craft Wandering Magician armor. It's an early source of extra max mana. The full set is a quest in the pack's armor chapter: a quest in "?".[5][12][14]

What comes next
When you reach nether-level resources, you unlock the Scroll Forge. It crafts scrolls from ink, paper and a focus: the ink sets the rarity and level, and the focus sets the spell's school. The pack's quest for it is a quest in "?", and Common Ink has its own quest, a quest in "?".[6][8]

How does Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks work?
9 parts
Same as in the All the Mods 10 4.10 guide
Here's the thing to know up front: the sources for Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks describe crafting stations, not power networks, fluid pipes or item-pipe automation. The real mechanics are how scrolls, ink, spell books and upgrades flow through those stations, and that's what this section covers.[1][5][6]
Inscription Table: getting spells into books
A spell book only works properly once you inscribe spells into it, and you do that at the Inscription Table by using scrolls. You can get a scroll back out of a spell book later, but doing so uninscribes the spell.[5]
Each tier of craftable spell book you make increases its slot count and often adds extra bonuses, so it can hold more spells and more powerful ones.[13]
Scrolls
Scrolls can be found in chests, looted from mobs, or crafted. Each one holds a spell with a level, a bit like an enchanted book. You can use a scroll on its own to cast the spell, which skips mana costs and cooldown but uses up the scroll. Most of the time you'll want to inscribe it into a spell book, or recycle it in the Alchemist Cauldron to turn it into more useful spells.[11]
Scroll Forge: ink, paper and a focus
Once you reach nether-level resources, the Scroll Forge opens up a new way to gain power. It crafts scrolls from ink, paper and a focus. The ink sets the rarity (and so the level), while the focus sets the spell's school.[6]
Ink works as a ceiling on what you can craft. Common ink makes the lowest-level spells, and if a spell's lowest level is above common, common ink can't craft it. The same rule applies to every other ink tier. Rare and higher inks come mainly from magic treasure chests or from killing spellcasting mobs. The rarest ink crafts the most powerful spells, and some spells have several legendary levels that need the Arcane Anvil to reach.[15]
School focuses
Every school has a Focus item that you use as the crafting ingredient for that school. These are the ones the in-game guide lists:[4]
- Fire: Blaze Rod.[4]
- Ice: Frozen Bones.[4]
- Lightning: Bottle o' Lightning.[4]
- Holy: the Divine Pearl.[4]
- Ender: Ender Pearl.[4]
- Blood: Blood Vial.[4]
- Evocation: Emerald.[4]
- Nature: Poisonous Potato.[4]
- Eldritch: Echo Shard, but only after you've learned an Eldritch spell from a restored manuscript. You can't craft or cast Eldritch spells straight away.[4]

Arcane Anvil: the upgrade station
The Arcane Anvil is the most powerful crafting station in the mod. It levels up scrolls, upgrades armor and spell books, and imbues weapons with spells. To raise a scroll's level, you combine it with the ink of the next rarity up.[7][11]
Crafting Shaped

Unique spell books have locked spells, but you can still improve them. Combine the book in the Arcane Anvil with a higher-level scroll of the same spell, and the locked spell goes up a level.[17]
Upgrade orbs
Upgrades are the final stage of progression. By default, any armor and any spell book can be upgraded. The in-game guide says an orb for a specific attribute is made from a base Empty Upgrade Orb plus 8 runes of that attribute. The recipe block below shows the exact in-pack version for the Blood orb.[7][16]

The Alchemist Cauldron is where you recycle scrolls into more useful spells. It can also cook mobs placed inside it for blood, the same job a vanilla cauldron does when it's heated by a campfire underneath.[11][18]

How do you progress through Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks?
5 parts
Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks has its own quest chapter in this pack. It covers the mod's whole kit: the crafting stations, every ink rarity, the runes, the upgrade orbs, the spell books and the school armor sets. The mod's progression splits into early, mid and late game, and this section follows that order.[5][6][7][8]
Early game: loot, scrolls and your first spell book
The early game is mostly exploring and looting. The world is full of magic loot, especially in the new magic structures. Be careful, though: each of those structures is home to a powerful mage who won't be happy to see you.[5]
Scrolls are your first taste of magic. You can use a scroll up to cast its spell, which skips mana cost and cooldown but consumes the scroll. It's usually better to save it and inscribe it into a spell book with the Inscription Table, so you can cast it again and again.[5][11]

The quest chapter has starting quests for the Inscription Table and for Arcane Essence. You can also pull a scroll back out of a spell book later, but doing so uninscribes the spell.[5][8]
You can craft beginner spell books from basic materials. Each higher crafted tier gives the book more spell slots and often extra bonuses. Every spell book in the chapter has its own quest, whether you craft it or find it.[5][8][13]
Arcane Essence also gets you Wandering Magician armor, an early source of extra max mana. The pack's armor quest chapter has a quest for the full set.[5][14]

Ink tiers
The rarity of the ink decides which spell levels you can craft. Common ink crafts the lowest level of spells. If a spell's lowest level is above common, common ink can't craft it, and the same rule applies to every other ink.[15]
The Alchemist Cauldron is how you climb the ink ladder, because it brews each ink up into the next rarity. It can also recycle scrolls into more useful spells. The cauldron and all five inks have their own quests.[8][11][12]

- Common Ink: the most common ink, which crafts the lowest level of spells.[8][15]
- Uncommon Ink: brewed in the cauldron, and it crafts slightly more powerful spells.[12][15]
- Rare Ink: brewed in the cauldron, and also found regularly in magic treasure chests or dropped by spellcasting mobs.[12][15]
- Epic Ink: brewed in the cauldron, and also best found in magic treasure or from spellcasting mobs.[12][15]
- Legendary Ink: the rarest ink, which crafts the most powerful spells. Some spells have several legendary levels, and reaching those needs the Arcane Anvil.[12][15]

Mid game: Scroll Forge, runes and school armor
Once you have Nether-level resources, the Scroll Forge opens up. It crafts scrolls from ink, paper and a focus. The ink sets the rarity, and therefore the level, while the focus sets the spell's school.[6]

Intermediate spell books are crafted using Nether resources. Hogskin drops from Hoglins. This is also the time to start crafting stronger armor with Arcane Cloth. To get large amounts of Arcane Essence, focus on raiding magical structures.[6]

Keep an eye out for runestones in magical structures, since they're used to craft even more powerful armor. Class mages always drop a rune of their school. In the quest chapter, the Blank Runestone quest unlocks one quest for each school rune. Each rune quest then unlocks two more: that school's upgrade orb and its armor set.[6][8]
Each school has a Focus, which is a representative item used in its crafting. If you inscribed the wrong rune, a Shriving Stone can turn an inscribed rune back into a Blank Runestone.[4][12]

Late game: Arcane Anvil, upgrades and top-tier books
You reach the late game once you have netherite and large amounts of basic resources. Everything here runs through the Arcane Anvil, the most powerful crafting station. It levels up your scrolls, upgrades armor and spell books, and imbues weapons with spells. The anvil has its own quest.[7][8]

Eldritch magic and unique spell books
You can't craft or cast Eldritch spells right away. First you need to find an Ancient Knowledge Fragment and restore it into an Eldritch Manuscript with an echo shard. The quests follow that same order. Consuming a restored manuscript teaches you a single Eldritch spell.[4][8]

Unique spell books are rare mob drops that come with locked spells. You can raise a locked spell's level in the Arcane Anvil by combining the book with a higher-level scroll of that same spell. For example, Evokers and Archevokers can drop the Grimoire of Evokation.[17]
You can loot the Rotten Spell Book from rotten places across the Overworld, and it can be blessed anew. In the quest chapter, its quest leads to the Druidic Tome quest. The chapter also has quests for the Blaze Instruction Manual, Villager Bible and Necronomicon.[8][12][13]
How does Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks work with other mods?
6 parts
Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks isn't a magic island in this pack. Its items show up in recipes from other mods, and the pack adds a few recipes of its own that tie your spellcasting progress into the wider modpack. Here's where the connections are.[12]
Pack endgame crafts
The pack adds a recipe for the Improbable Probability Device that needs a Lightning Upgrade Orb alongside items from several other mods. If you're working toward it, don't skip the upgrade orbs.[12]

Mithril without the mining
Normally Mithril is a rare Overworld ore. It only generates below y = -38 where it isn't exposed to air, and you need a netherite pickaxe to mine it.[7]
This pack adds another route: a Theurgy incubation recipe that produces Mithril Ingot from Mithril Sulfur, an Alchemical Salt Mineral and a Mercury Shard. If you're already running Theurgy's alchemy, this is a handy way to get Mithril.[12]
Farming Arcane Essence with bees
Arcane Essence is the basic material for a lot of early magic gear, and you normally get it by raiding magical structures. Productive Bees gives you a renewable source instead. A crafting recipe uses Arcane Essence to turn a configurable bee into an Arcane Essence bee.[5][6][12]

Quests outside the mod's own chapter
Besides its dedicated quest chapter, the mod's armor sets also appear in the pack's basic_armor chapter. That chapter has quests for the Cultist, Electromancer, Wandering Magician, Archevoker, Shadow-Walker, Pyromancer, Priest and Plagued sets, such as a quest in "?" for the full Wandering Magician set.[14]
Which All the Mods 10 quests use Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks?
4 parts
Iron's Spells 'n Spellbooks has its own quest chapter in this pack, and it also appears in a few shared chapters: basic_armor, basic_tools and chapter_2_the_star. Here's what each one asks for and how the quests unlock.[8][10][14][19]
The dedicated chapter
The iron_spells_and_spellbooks chapter opens with a group of quests that have no prerequisites. These cover the core workstations and materials: Inscription Table in a quest in "?", Arcane Essence in a quest in "?", Alchemist Cauldron in a quest in "?", Arcane Anvil in a quest in "?", Scroll Forge in a quest in "?" and Blank Runestone in a quest in "?".[8]
Each ink tier also has its own quest with no prerequisite: Common Ink in a quest in "?", Uncommon Ink in a quest in "?", Rare Ink in a quest in "?", Epic Ink in a quest in "?" and Legendary Ink in a quest in "?".[8]
Runes, upgrade orbs and armor
The Blank Runestone quest is the hub of the chapter. Completing it unlocks one quest for each school's rune. Each rune quest then unlocks two more: that school's upgrade orb and its matching full armor set (helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots).[8]
- Fire Rune in a quest in "?" leads to Fire Upgrade Orb in a quest in "?" and the Pyromancer set in a quest in "?".[8]
- Ice Rune in a quest in "?" leads to Ice Upgrade Orb in a quest in "?" and the Cryomancer set in a quest in "?".[8]
- Lightning Rune in a quest in "?" leads to Lightning Upgrade Orb in a quest in "?" and the Electromancer set in a quest in "?".[8]
- Holy Rune in a quest in "?" leads to Holy Upgrade Orb in a quest in "?" and the Priest set in a quest in "?".[8]
- Ender Rune in a quest in "?" leads to Ender Upgrade Orb in a quest in "?" and the Shadow-Walker set in a quest in "?".[8]
- Evocation Rune in a quest in "?" leads to Evocation Upgrade Orb in a quest in "?" and the Archevoker set in a quest in "?".[8]
- Blood Rune in a quest in "?" leads to Blood Upgrade Orb in a quest in "?" and the Cultist set in a quest in "?".[8]
- Nature Rune in a quest in "?" leads to Nature Upgrade Orb in a quest in "?" and the Plagued set in a quest in "?".[8]
Spell books and lore items
The spell book quests all share one prerequisite quest from outside this chapter. They cover Flimsy Journal (a quest in "?"), Ironbound Tome (a quest in "?"), Apprentice's Spell Book (a quest in "?"), Enchanted Spell Book (a quest in "?") and Ancient Codex (a quest in "?").[8]
The same prerequisite also unlocks the special books: Dragonskin Spell Book (a quest in "?"), Grimoire of Evokation (a quest in "?"), Necronomicon (a quest in "?"), Blaze Instruction Manual (a quest in "?"), Villager Bible (a quest in "?") and Rotten Spell Book (a quest in "?"). The Rotten Spell Book quest in turn unlocks Druidic Tome in a quest in "?".[8]
Separately, Ancient Knowledge Fragment in a quest in "?" has its own outside prerequisite. Completing it unlocks Eldritch Manuscript in a quest in "?".[8]
Armor, tools and other chapters
The basic_armor chapter asks for full mage armor sets, and none of these quests have listed prerequisites. It repeats several sets from the dedicated chapter: Cultist (a quest in "?"), Electromancer (a quest in "?"), Archevoker (a quest in "?"), Shadow-Walker (a quest in "?"), Pyromancer (a quest in "?"), Priest (a quest in "?"), Plagued (a quest in "?") and Cryomancer (a quest in "?").[14]
The basic_armor chapter also adds sets you won't find in the dedicated chapter: Wandering Magician (a quest in "?"), Scarecrow (a quest in "?") and Netherite Battlemage (a quest in "?").[14]
In the basic_tools chapter, a quest in "?" asks for Spellbreaker. a quest in "?" accepts either Magehunter or a sword from another mod. Both quests sit behind a prerequisite from elsewhere in that chapter.[19]
The chapter_2_the_star chapter starts with Arcane Essence in a quest in "?". That quest unlocks Lightning Upgrade Orb in a quest in "?" and Scroll in a quest in "?".[10]
