Iron Furnaces is a mod in All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.1.0, where it is version 4.3.2. Inspired by cpw's Iron Chests mod, adds a few different tiers of furnace. (Summary from the mod's Modrinth page.)

What is Iron Furnaces?

1 part

Iron Furnaces is all about upgrading the humble furnace. It's inspired by cpw's Iron Chests and adds a ladder of furnace tiers, with reconfigurable sides and augments for things like smoking and blasting. This pack includes version 4.3.2.[1][2]

It's for you if you're tired of waiting on smelting, or if you want furnaces that take items in and out of pipes and other inventories automatically. Each furnace has input and output settings per side, and the Furnace Settings Linker copies those settings to other furnaces.[1][3]

Where it fits in the progression

The Iron Furnaces quest chapter walks you up the tiers one furnace at a time. Here is how the quest book describes the smelt times per item:[3]

The Allthemodium Furnace also has its own quest in the AllTheModium chapter: "AllTheModium Furnace" quest.[4]

The Rainbow Furnace line is the big goal. The quest for Rainbow Plating says you need every furnace before Netherite, even the Copper, Silver and Crystal ones.[3]

How do you get started with Iron Furnaces?

5 parts

Iron Furnaces adds a whole ladder of furnace tiers, and you climb it one furnace at a time. Each step smelts faster than the last, so this is the order I'd go in.[3]

Start with the Copper Furnace

Start with the Copper Furnace. A normal furnace takes 200 ticks to smelt one item (20 ticks is 1 second), and the Copper Furnace takes 180. It's only a small gain, but copper is one of the most common ores you can find. The pack changed this recipe, so use the one below rather than any mod default you remember. The quest is "Copper Furnace" quest.[3][5]

Then the Iron Furnace

Next is the Iron Furnace, at 160 ticks (8 seconds) per item. You can make it from a normal furnace or from a Copper Furnace, so nothing you built in the first step is wasted. Both recipes are below. The quest is "Iron Furnace" quest.[3][5]

The mod also has upgrade items, such as the Stone to Copper Furnace Upgrade and Stone to Iron Furnace Upgrade. Their tooltip says to sneak and right-click to upgrade.[5][6]

Try wireless heat

Once you have an Iron Furnace, try wireless heat (a quest in "Iron Furnaces"). Place the Wireless Heat Transmitter and feed it energy. Then put an Wireless Heat Receiver inside the transmitter to bind it. Finally, put the receiver in a furnace's fuel slot and that furnace is powered. The receiver's tooltip says it only works from Iron tier and above, which is why this comes after the Iron Furnace.[3][6]

Get the Furnace Settings Linker

Click the top left of a furnace's screen to open its configuration. There you set inputs, outputs and Redstone activation, and each side of the furnace can be set to input, output, both, fuel input or nothing. That matters when you pipe items in and out. The Furnace Settings Linker copies all of these settings to other furnaces, so you only set a bank of furnaces up once. The quest is "Configurations" quest.[3]

Where to go next

After that, keep climbing. The Silver Furnace takes 140 ticks (7 seconds) and can be made from a Copper or Iron Furnace. The Golden Furnace takes 120 ticks. The Diamond Furnace takes 80 ticks (4 seconds), which beats a Blast Furnace. The pack changed both Silver Furnace recipes, so check the recipe viewer for the exact ingredients.[3][5]

Tip: The quest chapter points out that every furnace before Netherite, even the Copper one, is needed later for Rainbow Plating. Hold on to your early furnaces instead of throwing them away.[3]

How does Iron Furnaces work?

6 parts

Iron Furnaces adds a few different tiers of furnace, inspired by cpw's Iron Chests. On top of the tiers, the tooltips and recipes in this pack show augments, wireless heat and a power-generating Rainbow Furnace. Here is how those pieces fit together.[1][6]

Climbing the furnace tiers

There are two ways to move up a tier. The first is to craft the next furnace directly. Those recipes use a lower-tier furnace as the base. For example, the Diamond Furnace is made from a gold-tier furnace and the Emerald Furnace from a diamond-tier one.[5]

The second is an upgrade item, and each one is named after the two tiers it connects, such as Stone to Iron, Iron to Gold, Gold to Diamond or Obsidian to Netherite. Sneak and right-click with the upgrade on a furnace to upgrade it. The language file also lists Vibranium and Unobtainium furnaces with their own upgrade items.[6]

The Allthemodium Furnace sits above the Netherite Furnace, and the pack changed its recipe from the mod's. The matching Netherite to Allthemodium Furnace Upgrade is the Netherite to Allthemodium step, and it uses the mod's own recipe.[5][6]

Augments

Augments change what a furnace does. Right-click with an augment to insert it. Several of them trade one benefit for a drawback, so read the tooltip before you commit.[6]

The pack changed the recipe for the Fuel Efficiency augment. The other five augments above use the mod's own recipes.[5][6]

Sides, redstone and experience

The Inventory Config augment adds configurable sides for item transfer.[6]

There is also a family of redstone augments, and you right-click in the air to change their mode. Redstone Control mode will not smelt while the furnace has a redstone signal, and Redstone Inverse Control will only smelt while it has one. Comparator mode acts as an internal comparator and outputs the signal to all sides. Comparator Subtraction works the same way, but you set the subtracted signal strength in the furnace GUI.[6]

An experience augment decides where smelting XP goes. In one mode it is ejected to nearby fluid tanks, and in the other it is given to the player who placed the furnace. Sneak and right-click in the air to switch between them.[6]

Wireless heat

You can heat furnaces with power instead of fuel. Put a Wireless Heat Receiver in the fuel slot of a furnace, but note that this only works from Iron tier and above. To link it, place the receiver in a Wireless Heat Transmitter. Then give the transmitter Forge Energy and it will power every receiver bound to it. A receiver that is not linked yet shows the tooltip "Has yet to be bound to an energy source!"[6]

The Rainbow Furnace

The Rainbow Furnace is the mod's showpiece, and it is crafted from a Rainbow Core and Rainbow Plating. Getting there means passing through the Netherite Furnace tier first, and one crafting of plating makes 8 pieces. The recipes are shown below.[5]

This one is the mod's own recipe.

This one is the mod's own recipe.

Its power generation has strict rules. For power generation, one of each tier of furnace must be an active generator and must not have a full buffer. It outputs energy to any side that is configured as output, and it does not add energy to the internal buffer. You can only have one Rainbow Generator.[6]

Watch out: You can only have one Rainbow Generator, so plan where you put it. Its tooltip also says energy goes out of sides configured as output.[6]

Cosmetic extras

The Furnace Spooka-lator spookalizes a furnace when you right-click it, and sneaking while you right-click cleanses the spookalization. The Furnace Wrapping Papers wraps a furnace as a gift, and sneak and right-click opens the gift again.[6]

How do you progress through Iron Furnaces?

4 parts

Iron Furnaces in this pack is a ladder of furnace tiers. Each tier is crafted from an earlier furnace, and no tier is slower than the one before it. The pack's Iron Furnaces quest chapter walks you up that ladder in order, and the numbers below come straight from those quests.[3]

The tier ladder

Speeds are given in ticks per smelt, and 20 ticks is 1 second. A normal furnace takes 200 ticks to smelt one item, so that is your baseline.[3]

  1. Copper Furnace ("Copper Furnace" quest): 180 ticks. It can be crafted into a Silver or Iron Furnace.[3]
  2. Iron Furnace ("Iron Furnace" quest): 160 ticks, or 8 seconds. You can make it from a normal furnace or a Copper Furnace, and it leads to Silver or Gold.[3]
  3. Silver Furnace ("Silver Furnace" quest): 140 ticks, or 7 seconds. It is crafted from a Copper or Iron Furnace and is used to craft a Gold Furnace.[3]
  4. Golden Furnace ("Golden Furnace" quest): 120 ticks. It is crafted from a Silver or Iron Furnace and leads to the Diamond one.[3]
  5. Diamond Furnace ("Diamond Furnace" quest): 80 ticks, or 4 seconds. It is only crafted from a Gold Furnace and can become a Crystal or Emerald Furnace.[3]
  6. Emerald Furnace ("Emerald Furnace" quest) and Crystal Furnace ("Crystal Furnace" quest): both smelt in 40 ticks, or 2 seconds. Both are made from a Diamond Furnace and both can become an Obsidian Furnace. The Crystal Furnace is transparent, so you can't see items smelting inside it.[3]
  7. Obsidian Furnace ("Obsidian Furnace" quest): 20 ticks, or 1 second. It is crafted from a Crystal or Emerald Furnace and leads to Netherite.[3]
  8. Netherite Furnace ("Netherite Furnace" quest): 5 ticks, which works out to 4 items smelted every second. It is crafted from an Obsidian Furnace.[3]
  9. Allthemodium Furnace ("Allthemodium Furnace" quest, "AllTheModium Furnace" quest): the same 5-tick cook time as Netherite, but it cooks 16 items at a time, so a whole stack is done in about a second. You need it to craft the Vibranium Furnace.[3][4]
  10. Vibranium Furnace ("Vibranium Furnace" quest, "Vibranium Furnace" quest): 3 ticks, smelting 32 items at a time, so a full stack takes 6 ticks.[3][4]
  11. Unobtainium Furnace ("Unobtainium Furnace" quest, "Unobtainium Furnace" quest): 1 tick, cooking an entire stack at a time. It is the fastest furnace in the pack.[3][4]
Tip: Crystal and Emerald smelt at the same speed, so you could pick just one on the way to Obsidian. You will need to build both later anyway, because the Rainbow Plating quest asks for every furnace before Netherite.[3][5]

Getting started

Your first step up happens early, in the Starting out chapter. The quest "Smelting iron with iron" quest has you upgrade a furnace into an Iron Furnace in a crafting table, which also unlocks the automation settings behind the cogwheel in the top left of the GUI.[7]

Past the ladder: the Rainbow Furnace

The side branch is the Rainbow Furnace ("&zRainbow Furnace" quest). It takes 8 Rainbow Plating and 1 Rainbow Core. It smelts in 20 ticks, but it handles a whole stack of items at once rather than a single item.[3]

The Plating quest ("&zRainbow Plating" quest) needs every furnace from Copper up to Obsidian, including the Copper, Silver and Crystal ones. The Core quest ("&zRainbow Core" quest) unlocks after the Netherite Furnace.[3][5]

How does Iron Furnaces work with other mods?

3 parts

Iron Furnaces mostly connects to the rest of the pack through its top-tier furnaces. The pack adds recipes that use the Unobtainium Furnace as an ingredient, so it's worth keeping one around for endgame crafting.[5]

Ironjetpacks thruster

The pack adds a shaped recipe for the Thruster from Iron Jetpacks. It needs an Unobtainium Furnace, along with a block from Allthemodium and one from Powah.[5]

Philosopher's Fuel

The pack also adds a shaped recipe for Philosopher's Fuel. The Unobtainium Furnace is just one of its ingredients, and the rest come from many other mods, such as Draconic Evolution, Ender IO and Forbidden Arcanus.[5]

Other connections

The quest for Augment: Factory says it makes your furnace work like the Smelting Factory from Mekanism, using energy instead of fuel. The quest tells you to pipe in energy to start smelting.[3]

On the mod's own project page, the developer lists explicit compatibility with JEI and Project MMO, and says Iron Furnaces should work with most mods.[1]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Iron Furnaces?

6 parts

Iron Furnaces shows up in three quest chapters: one early quest in the starting chapter, a dedicated Iron Furnaces chapter that holds almost everything, and three late-game quests in the AllTheModium chapter. Here's how they fit together.[3][4][7]

Chapter 1: Starting out

Your first contact is "Smelting iron with iron" quest, which unlocks after the Easy Ore Duping quest and asks you to get an Iron Furnace. The quest notes that Iron Furnaces smelt faster and can be set up for automation with the cogwheel in the top left of the GUI.[7]

The Iron Furnaces chapter

The main chapter is a furnace upgrade ladder, one quest per furnace, each asking you to obtain that furnace. Here's the order, with the cook times the quest text gives:[3]

  1. "Iron Furnace" quest and "Copper Furnace" quest have no prerequisites, so you can start with either. The quest text says a normal furnace takes 200 ticks, the Copper Furnace takes 180 and the Iron Furnace takes 160 ticks (8 seconds).[3]
  2. "Silver Furnace" quest comes after both of those. The Silver Furnace smelts at 140 ticks (7 seconds).[3]
  3. "Golden Furnace" quest follows the Iron and Silver quests. The Golden Furnace has a cook time of 120 ticks.[3]
  4. "Diamond Furnace" quest comes after the Golden Furnace. The Diamond Furnace takes 80 ticks (4 seconds).[3]
  5. "Crystal Furnace" quest and "Emerald Furnace" quest both unlock after the Diamond Furnace. The Crystal Furnace and Emerald Furnace both work at 40 ticks.[3]
  6. "Obsidian Furnace" quest needs one of those two quests done. The Obsidian Furnace works every 20 ticks.[3]
  7. "Netherite Furnace" quest comes next. The Netherite Furnace smelts an item every 5 ticks, which the quest puts at 4 items per second.[3]
  8. "Allthemodium Furnace" quest, then "Vibranium Furnace" quest, then "Unobtainium Furnace" quest, each unlocking after the previous one. The quest text says the Unobtainium Furnace smelts faster than any other furnace in the pack.[3]

Side quests: heat, decorations and settings

Once you have both the Copper and Iron Furnace quests done, several extra quests open up.[3]

Augment quests

Six augment quests all unlock after a quest called Augments: "Augment: Speed" quest, "Augment: Blasting" quest, "Augment: Smoking" quest, "Augment: Fuel Efficiency" quest, "Augment: Factory" quest and "Augment: Generator" quest. Each asks for its matching item, such as Augment: Speed or Augment: Generator. The quest text says Blasting and Smoking both stack with other upgrades. Factory makes the furnace run on energy instead of fuel, and Generator does the opposite by turning fuel into energy.[3]

The Rainbow branch

The last branch in the Iron Furnaces chapter builds toward the Rainbow Furnace. "&zRainbow Plating" quest asks for the Rainbow Plating and needs every furnace before Netherite done first, Copper and Silver included. "&zRainbow Core" quest asks for the Rainbow Core and unlocks after the Netherite Furnace. "&zRainbow Furnace" quest needs both of those.[3]

After that, "&zRainbow Coal" quest asks for Rainbow Coal and unlocks after the Rainbow Furnace. "&zRainbow Generator" quest asks you to have all the furnaces from Copper up to Netherite plus the Rainbow Furnace. Its text says that with Augment: Generator on the surrounding furnaces and on the Rainbow Furnace, you get a boost of 2kFE a tick more.[3]

Chapter 3: AllTheModium

Three more quests repeat the top end of the ladder in the AllTheModium chapter. "AllTheModium Furnace" quest unlocks after the AllTheModium quest and says the Allthemodium Furnace cooks at 5 ticks, 16 items at a time. "Vibranium Furnace" quest needs the AllTheModium Furnace and Vibranium quests, and says the Vibranium Furnace takes 3 ticks and smelts 32 items at a time. "Unobtainium Furnace" quest needs the Vibranium Furnace and Unobtainium quests, and says the Unobtainium Furnace cooks in 1 tick, a whole stack at a time.[4]
