What is Productive Metalworks?
1 part
Productive Metalworks adds a multiblock Foundry for melting items into liquid metal and casting them back into useful shapes. This pack ships version 1.21.1-1.15.1 of the mod.[1]
In this pack its main job is to change how you get Silent Gear items. The quest book says you skip Blueprints and use Casts and a Foundry instead, so you get the Silent Gear way of building gear without giving up a Tinker's-style workflow. If you like melting and casting, this mod is for you.[2]
Where it fits in progression
You meet it early. The Silent Gear chapter starts you off with Fire Clay, and the early chapter "The Cool Parts" has you make Black Fire Bricks as the first piece of the Foundry. You can dye those bricks, so the black colour doesn't matter.[2][3]
The Foundry is built around a Black Foundry Controller, Black Foundry Tank blocks for fuel (mostly lava), and Liquid Heating Coil blocks for the floor. It needs 4 walls and a floor, and it can be as small as 1x1 inside, though the quest recommends going bigger for more space.[2]
To get metal out, connect a Foundry Tap to a Black Foundry Drain. Then pour into a Casting Basin, which turns about 900mB of liquid metal into a full metal block, or into a Casting Table for making casts. The quests cover the Ingot Cast, Nugget Cast, Gem Cast, Rod Cast, Plate Cast and Gear Cast.[2]
Unverified The sources do not show Productive Metalworks on the ATM Star quest path, so don't count on it as part of that route.
How do you get started with Productive Metalworks?
6 parts
Welcome to Productive Metalworks! In this pack it replaces the Blueprint route for Silent Gear: you now need a Foundry and Casts to get your Silent items. So your first job is to build a Foundry, and everything starts with Fire Clay. The quest "Silent Gear and Productive Metalworks" quest says the same thing.[2]
Step 1: Fire Clay and Fire Bricks
Fire Clay is made from clay balls and sand. Smelt the Fire Clay to get Fire Brick. Almost every Foundry block is built from Fire Bricks, so make a good stack.[3][5]
Step 2: The wall blocks
Fire Bricks are combined into the first Foundry building block, Black Fire Bricks. They come out black, but you can dye them, so don't worry about the colour. Walls can also be Black Foundry Window blocks instead of bricks. See "Making the Foundry" quest.[2][3]

Step 3: Controller, tank, drain and coils
Every Foundry needs at least one Black Foundry Controller. It is the heart of the Foundry: its GUI shows the liquids inside, and you can put items in and take them out there. See "Foundry Controller" quest.[2]

Recipe id: productivemetalworks:crafting/black_foundry_controller
Next comes the Black Foundry Tank, which holds the fuel. Lava is the main fuel here. You can right-click a bucket into the tank or feed it through a pipe.[2][6]

The Black Foundry Drain is how you get the liquid metal out, because it is too hot for your hands or buckets. You can also check the liquid amounts by looking at the drain.[2]

Last, the Liquid Heating Coil blocks. They make up the floor and are what heats the Foundry.[2][3]

Step 4: Build the Foundry
Use heating coils for the floor and bricks or windows for the walls. Put your controller, tank and drain(s) in the walls. You only need 4 walls and a floor, so the corners can stay empty. The Ponder scene gives the minimum size as 3x3x2, with at least one air block inside, and the quest describes this as 1x1 on the inside. Bigger Foundries have more room, though. If a block is missing, the Controller tells you where. The Foundry is done when the Controller lights up like a Furnace and the coils turn orange. See "Building the Foundry" quest.[2][3][6]
Step 5: Get the metal out
Place a Foundry Tap on the drain, put a casting block under it, and right-click the tap to pour. A Casting Basin turns about 900mB of liquid metal into a full metal block. A Casting Table is used for casts. See "Casting Items" quest.[2][6]

Step 6: Casts
Casts like the Ingot Cast, Nugget Cast, Plate Cast, Rod Cast, Gear Cast and Gem Cast are what you need instead of Blueprints. They are made by pouring liquid over an item on the Casting Table. This pack changed some of the cast recipes (gear, plate and rod) and added extra cast recipes of its own. The ingot cast below is one of the options.[2][5][6]

How does Productive Metalworks work?
5 parts
The heart of Productive Metalworks is the Foundry, a multiblock you build yourself. You melt items into fluid inside it, optionally alloy those fluids, then pour them out to cast blocks and other items.[6]
Building the Foundry
The minimum size is 3x3x2. The structure needs at least one air block inside it, and the corners are optional, so you don't have to fill them in.[6]
- The bottom layer of the foundry has to be made of Heating Coils.[6]
- You need a Foundry Controller, such as the Black Foundry Controller. It has a GUI you can use to add items to the foundry.[5][6]
- You need a Foundry Tank, such as the Black Foundry Tank, to hold fuel.[5][6]
- You need at least one Foundry Drain, such as the Black Foundry Drain. A Foundry Tap attached to a drain is how you extract fluid later.[5][6]
The foundry blocks come in several colors. In the recipes shown for this pack, dyeing works by combining a dye with any block from the matching group (controllers, tanks, drains, windows, capacitors or fire bricks). Black, blue and brown versions appear in those recipes.[5]

Fueling the Foundry
The foundry only works when there is fuel inside a Foundry Tank. You can right-click a bucket into the tank, or supply fuel through a pipe.[6]
If you'd rather use energy, swap the Fluid Heating Coils for Powered Heating Coils. High Powered Heating Coils create even more heat. With powered coils you must also replace the Foundry Tank with a Foundry Capacitor, such as the Black Foundry Capacitor, and then feed energy in through a cable attached to the capacitor.[5][6]
Smelting and alloying
You can add items either through the controller GUI or by dropping them straight into the foundry. After some time they turn into liquid.[6]
If you add a second liquid, some combinations can undergo an alloying reaction. The in-game Ponder example is 2/3 Iron and 1/3 Nickel turning into Invar. You can also add fluids by hand by right-clicking a drain with a bucket.[6]
Controller upgrades
- A stability upgrade disables fluid alloying in the Foundry. Use it when you want fluids to stay separate.[6]
- A time upgrade speeds up melting and alloying, and you can install multiple of them.[6]
- A second time upgrade is described as twice as good as the first one.[6]
Casting
To get the fluid out, right-click a Foundry Tap attached to a drain. Pour the fluid into a Casting Basin, which slowly cools it into a block. Right-click the basin to take the item out.[6]
A Casting Table turns fluids into different casts. You add a cast by right-clicking the table with the item in hand. You can also create new items by pouring liquids over items placed in the Casting Table or Basin.[6]
Unverified Any pack-specific changes to this mod's settings, such as tank or capacitor capacities, energy use and melting speeds, would live in the mod's config files. No config files for this mod were available, so the sources here do not show those values.
How do you progress through Productive Metalworks?
5 parts
Productive Metalworks in this pack is a step-by-step build: you make Fire Bricks, assemble a Foundry, then cast what it melts. The quests cover it twice. There's a Silent Gear chapter and an early "Chapter 2: The Cool Parts" path. Here the mod replaces Blueprints for Silent Gear items, so you need Casts and a Foundry instead.[2][3]
Step 1: Fire Clay and Fire Bricks
Start with Fire Clay, as "Silent Gear and Productive Metalworks" quest tells you. Smelt it into Fire Bricks, then use those to make your first Black Fire Bricks in "Making the Foundry" quest. They come out black, but you can dye them afterwards.[2][3]
Crafting Shaped

Step 2: Foundry parts
Next you collect the Foundry's working parts. The Black Foundry Controller is the heart of the Foundry, and every Foundry needs at least one ("Foundry Controller" quest). You open it to see the liquids inside and to move items in and out.[2]
Black Foundry Tank blocks hold liquids, mostly fuel ("Foundry Tanks" quest). The quest says lava is one of the only real ways to fuel the Foundry. Black Foundry Drain blocks are how you get liquid metal out, because it's too hot for hands or buckets ("Foundry Drains" quest). Connect a Foundry Tap to a Drain, then right-click the Tap to drain.[2][3]

Step 3: Build the Foundry
The floor is made of Liquid Heating Coil blocks, which the fuel heats up. The walls are Fire Bricks or Black Foundry Window blocks, and your Controller, Drains and Tanks go in the walls too.[2][3]
Crafting Shaped

- The Foundry needs 4 walls and a floor. The corners can stay empty.[2][3]
- It can be as small as 1x1 on the inside, but a bigger Foundry has more space.[2][3]
- If a block is missing, the Controller tells you where.[2][3]
- It's finished when the Controller lights up like a Furnace and the Liquid Heating Coils turn orange.[2][3]
The quest steps for this are "Foundry Tanks and Heating" quest, "Foundry Drains and Taps" quest, "Foundry" quest and "Building the Foundry" quest. Any dye colour of Fire Bricks counts for the "Foundry" quest.[2][3]
Step 4: Casting
"Casting Items" quest has you craft a Casting Table, a Casting Basin and a Foundry Tap. Place them beneath a Tap on a Drain to pour liquid metal into them. The Basin turns about 900mB of liquid metal into a full metal block. The Table is what you use for casts.[2]

Recipe id: productivemetalworks:crafting/casting_basin
In Chapter 2, a quest in "Chapter 2: The Cool Parts" uses the Casting Basin for GeOres: you cast a full block's worth of ingot into 1 Compressed Sand. Place the Compressed Sand in the Basin, then use the Tap on a Drain above the Basin to deliver the material.[3]
The Silent Gear chapter then has one quest for each cast: Rod Cast, Gem Cast, Ingot Cast, Nugget Cast, Plate Cast and Gear Cast.[2]
The pack has changed some cast recipes. The gear, plate and rod cast recipes are marked as changed by the pack, while the gem, ingot and nugget ones are the mod's own. The pack also adds extra biosteel-based recipes for every cast type. These are the gear versions:[5]

Step 5: Better heating
If you'd rather use energy than fuel, the Powered Heating Coil only reaches 1500 C. The High Powered Heating Coil raises that to 3000 C. "High Powered Heating Coil" quest is in the "Chapter 3: AllTheModium" chapter and unlocks after the Soul Lava quest.[4]
In this pack, the High Powered Heating Coil is made by casting rather than crafting, and the recipe is marked as changed by the pack.[5]

How does Productive Metalworks work with other mods?
6 parts
Productive Metalworks is the foundry mod of the pack, and a lot of other mods plug into it. Most of the links below are casting, melting or alloying recipes, which means you melt things in the Foundry and pour them out with a Foundry Tap into a Casting Table or Casting Basin. The recipe dump marks these as added or changed by the pack, so don't expect them to match the mod's defaults.[2][5]
Silent Gear
The pack pairs Silent Gear with Productive Metalworks instead of making you choose between it and Tinker's Construct. The quest "Silent Gear and Productive Metalworks" quest explains that you now need casts and a Foundry to get Silent Gear items, instead of blueprints. It starts you off with Fire Clay.[2]
Allthemodium
The pack lets you cast the three Allthemodium metals in the Foundry: Allthemodium, Vibranium and Unobtainium. Each one has casting recipes for ingots, nuggets, plates, rods and gears. The example below is the Allthemodium Ingot, made from Molten Allthemodium.[5]
Item Casting (productivemetalworks)
Recipe id: productivemetalworks:casting/atm/allthemodium_ingot
Allthemodium also connects to the heating side of the Foundry. The pack casts Soul Lava onto a Powered Heating Coil to make a High Powered Heating Coil. The quest "High Powered Heating Coil" quest covers it and says Powered Heating Coils on their own only reach 1500 C.[4][5]
Block Casting (productivemetalworks)
Recipe id: productivemetalworks:casting/atm/high_powered_heating_coil
Oritech and AllTheOres
Oritech has the deepest integration. The pack changed several recipes so Oritech materials work in the Foundry. Here is what the recipes cover:[5]
- Melting: Iron Gem, Copper Gem, Gold Gem, Nickel Gem and Platinum Gem melt into the matching molten metal. The small clumps of the same metals do too.[5]
- Alloying: Molten Diamond and Molten Nickel make Molten Adamant. Biofuel and Molten Iron make Molten Biosteel. Molten Netherite and Molten Platinum make Molten Duratium. Molten Fluxite and Molten Nickel make Molten Energite.[5]
- Casting Oritech items: the pack adds casting recipes for Adamant Ingot, Biosteel Ingot, Duratium Ingot, Energite Ingot, Fluxite and Biomass.[5]
- AllTheOres metals: the same Oritech compat recipes cast Nickel Ingot, Platinum Ingot, Steel Ingot and Electrum Ingot from their molten forms. Nickel and platinum also have nugget recipes, and electrum, nickel and steel have block recipes.[5]
Fluid Alloying (productivemetalworks)
Recipe id: oritech:compat/productivemetalworks/alloying/biosteel
Biosteel has another use. The pack lets you make each cast (gear, gem, ingot, nugget, plate and rod) from Molten Biosteel plus any item of the matching type. There is also a version of the ingot cast that uses a plain brick instead.[5]
Create
A small one: casting Chocolate with an Ingot Cast gives a Bar of Chocolate.[5]
Dyenamics and friends
The extra dyed fire bricks, such as Amber Fire Bricks, have matching Foundry Capacitors, for example Amber Foundry Capacitor. These are casting recipes that use Molten Redstone, and the other colors in the dump follow the same pattern.[5]
Block Casting (productivemetalworks)

Integrated Dynamics
Two pack-added Integrated Dynamics recipes, one for the drying basin and one for the mechanical drying basin, take an Ancient Sapling, a Dead Bush and Molten Ancient Debris.[5]
Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Productive Metalworks?
3 parts
Productive Metalworks shows up in three quest chapters in this pack: Chapter 2: The Cool Parts, Silent Gear, and Chapter 3: AllTheModium. The Foundry is the centerpiece, so most of these quests walk you through building and using it.[2][3][4]
Chapter 2: The Cool Parts
This chapter gives you a quick start on the Foundry. It begins with "Making the Foundry" quest, which asks for Black Fire Bricks. They come out black, but you can dye them, so the color doesn't matter.[3]
Two quests unlock after that one:[3]
- "Foundry Tanks and Heating" quest asks for the Liquid Heating Coil, which forms the Foundry floor. It also lists a second item task that the sources here do not name. The quest text says the tanks mostly hold fuel, such as lava.[3]
- "Foundry Drains and Taps" quest asks for the Foundry Tap. You connect the Tap to a Drain and right-click it to pull the molten material out. This quest also has a second item task that the sources here do not name.[3]
"Foundry" quest comes next, once you've finished the tanks-and-heating quest, the drains-and-taps quest, and "Foundry Controller" quest (from the Silent Gear chapter). It accepts any one of the fire brick colors. The quest text says the Foundry needs 4 walls and a floor, with the corners left empty. It can be as small as 1x1 on the inside, though the quest recommends going bigger. You'll know it's built when the Controller lights up like a Furnace and the Liquid Heating Coils turn orange.[2][3]
The last quest in the chapter, a quest in "Chapter 2: The Cool Parts", asks for the Casting Basin. The quest text explains that you use it to make GeOres: place Compressed Sand in the Basin, then use a Tap on a Drain above it to deliver the material.[3]
Silent Gear
In this chapter the pack combines Silent Gear with Productive Metalworks. According to the quest text, you now need Casts and a Foundry to get Silent items instead of using Blueprints. The chain starts with "Silent Gear and Productive Metalworks" quest, which asks for Fire Clay.[2]
Three quests unlock right after it:[2]
- "Foundry Drains" quest asks for the Black Foundry Drain. Drains are how you extract the liquid metals, and viewing one shows the liquid amounts in the Foundry.[2]
- "Foundry Tanks" quest asks for the Black Foundry Tank. The quest says lava appears to be one of the only ways to fuel the Foundry.[2]
- "Foundry Controller" quest asks for the Black Foundry Controller. Every Foundry needs at least one. Its GUI shows the liquids inside and lets you put items in and take them out.[2]
"Building the Foundry" quest needs all three of those quests, plus the first one in the chain. It asks for the Liquid Heating Coil and either the Black Foundry Window or Black Fire Bricks.[2]
After that comes "Casting Items" quest, which asks for the Casting Table, the Casting Basin and the Foundry Tap. According to the quest text, you place the Tap on a Drain and put blocks beneath it, and the Casting Basin turns about 900mB of liquid metal into a full metal block.[2]
Six untitled quests follow, each unlocked by a quest called Casts. Each one asks for a different cast. The sources here do not describe the Casts quest itself.[2]
- a quest in "Silent Gear": Ingot Cast[2]
- a quest in "Silent Gear": Nugget Cast[2]
- a quest in "Silent Gear": Plate Cast[2]
- a quest in "Silent Gear": Gear Cast[2]
- a quest in "Silent Gear": Rod Cast[2]
- a quest in "Silent Gear": Gem Cast[2]
Chapter 3: AllTheModium
There's one Productive Metalworks quest here: "High Powered Heating Coil" quest, which unlocks after the Soul Lava quest. It asks for the High Powered Heating Coil. The quest text says the Powered Heating Coils only reach 1500 C, while the High Powered version runs on energy and gets up to 3000 C.[4]
