What is Productive Metalworks?

3 parts

Productive Metalworks adds the Foundry, a multiblock you build to melt items into liquid metal and then pour that metal out to cast solid items. This pack includes version 1.21.1-1.10.1 of the mod.[1][2][3]

What the pack uses it for

The pack's quest book pairs it with Silent Gear. It says Productive Metalworks changes how you obtain your Silent Gear items: instead of blueprints, you need casts and a Foundry. The chapter opens with "Silent Gear and Productive Metalworks" quest, which starts you off with Fire Clay.[2]

What you build

The Foundry's floor is made of Liquid Heating Coil blocks. The walls are Fire Bricks or Foundry Windows, and that is also where the controller, drains and tanks go. Tanks hold the fuel, mostly lava, and the warmed coils melt the items inside. Your first Fire Bricks come out as Black Fire Bricks, but you can dye them.[2][3]

A Foundry needs 4 walls and a floor, and the corners can stay empty. The controller tells you which block is missing. It can be as small as 1x1 on the inside, though a bigger one holds more. It is finished when the controller lights up like a Furnace and the coils turn orange.[2][3]

To get the metal out, place a Foundry Tap on a drain and put a casting block underneath. A Casting Basin turns about 900mB of liquid metal into a full metal block. A Casting Table is what you need for making casts.[2]

Where it sits in the quest book

The Chapter 2: The Cool Parts chapter walks you through the build: "Making the Foundry" quest, then "Foundry Tanks and Heating" quest and "Foundry Drains and Taps" quest, then "Foundry" quest. A Casting Basin quest follows after that last one.[3]

In the Silent Gear chapter, "Building the Foundry" quest comes after the opening Productive Metalworks quest and the Foundry drain and tank quests. "Casting Items" quest follows it, and the cast quests (ingot, nugget, plate, gear, rod and gem) come after a Casts quest.[2]

Unverified Whether the ATM Star path uses this mod is not shown by the quest sources here, so this guide does not claim a role for it there.

How do you get started with Productive Metalworks?

6 parts

Welcome to the metal side of the pack! In this pack, Productive Metalworks changes how you get your Silent Gear items: instead of blueprints you need casts and a Foundry. Everything starts with clay and sand, so here is the order I'd go in.[2]

Step 1: Fire Clay and Fire Bricks

The first quest, "Silent Gear and Productive Metalworks" quest, asks for Fire Clay. Smelt the Fire Clay to get Fire Brick, which most Foundry parts are built from.[2][3][4]

Step 2: Fire Bricks and the Controller

Combine 4 Fire Bricks to start the structure, as the quest "Making the Foundry" quest explains. You get Black Fire Bricks, and that's fine, because you can dye them afterwards.[3][4]

Next comes the Black Foundry Controller. Once the Foundry is up, it will tell you where a block is missing if there is one.[2][3][4]

Step 3: Tank, drain and heating coils

You need three more parts. The Black Foundry Tank takes the fuel, which the quest says is mostly lava. The Black Foundry Drain is how you get materials out. The Liquid Heating Coil blocks make up the floor and melt your items. For the walls you can use Fire Bricks or Black Foundry Window.[2][3][4]

Step 4: Build and fuel the Foundry

The Foundry needs a floor of heating coils and 4 walls, and the corners can stay empty. The walls are where the Controller, Tank and Drain go. The quest says it can be as small as 1x1 on the inside, and the in-game Ponder gives the minimum as 3x3x2 with at least one air block inside. I'd build bigger, since a bigger Foundry has more room. You'll know it is finished when the Controller lights up like a Furnace and the coils turn orange. These steps are in the quests "Foundry" quest and "Building the Foundry" quest.[2][3][5]

To fuel it, right-click a bucket into the Tank, or supply fuel through a pipe.[5]

Step 5: Tap, basin and table

Metal is too hot to take out with your hands or a bucket. Put a Foundry Tap on the Drain, then right-click the Tap to pour the metal onto whatever sits below it.[2][3][5]

The Casting Basin slowly cools the metal into a block, and the quest says about 900mB of liquid metal makes a full metal block. The Casting Table is what you use for casts. This is the quest "Casting Items" quest.[2][5]

Step 6: Make your casts

Casts are made on the Casting Table by pouring liquid metal over the matching item. The pack has a cast for each of these: Ingot Cast, Nugget Cast, Gem Cast, Rod Cast, Plate Cast and Gear Cast.[2][4][5]

How does Productive Metalworks work?

5 parts

Same as in the All the Mods 10: To the Sky 2.0.4 guide

The heart of Productive Metalworks is the Foundry, a multiblock you build yourself. You melt items into fluid inside it, optionally alloy those fluids, then pour them out to cast blocks and other items.[6]

Building the Foundry

The minimum size is 3x3x2. The structure needs at least one air block inside it, and the corners are optional, so you don't have to fill them in.[6]

The foundry blocks come in several colors. In the recipes shown for this pack, dyeing works by combining a dye with any block from the matching group (controllers, tanks, drains, windows, capacitors or fire bricks). Black, blue and brown versions appear in those recipes.[7]

This is the base tank recipe in the pack. Dyed variants are made by combining a dye with an existing tank.

Fueling the Foundry

The foundry only works when there is fuel inside a Foundry Tank. You can right-click a bucket into the tank, or supply fuel through a pipe.[6]

If you'd rather use energy, swap the Fluid Heating Coils for Powered Heating Coils. High Powered Heating Coils create even more heat. With powered coils you must also replace the Foundry Tank with a Foundry Capacitor, such as the Black Foundry Capacitor, and then feed energy in through a cable attached to the capacitor.[6][7]

Smelting and alloying

You can add items either through the controller GUI or by dropping them straight into the foundry. After some time they turn into liquid.[6]

If you add a second liquid, some combinations can undergo an alloying reaction. The in-game Ponder example is 2/3 Iron and 1/3 Nickel turning into Invar. You can also add fluids by hand by right-clicking a drain with a bucket.[6]

Controller upgrades

  • A stability upgrade disables fluid alloying in the Foundry. Use it when you want fluids to stay separate.[6]
  • A time upgrade speeds up melting and alloying, and you can install multiple of them.[6]
  • A second time upgrade is described as twice as good as the first one.[6]

Casting

To get the fluid out, right-click a Foundry Tap attached to a drain. Pour the fluid into a Casting Basin, which slowly cools it into a block. Right-click the basin to take the item out.[6]

A Casting Table turns fluids into different casts. You add a cast by right-clicking the table with the item in hand. You can also create new items by pouring liquids over items placed in the Casting Table or Basin.[6]

Tip: You don't have to right-click the Casting Basin every time. You can also empty it with a pipe or a hopper.[6]

Unverified Any pack-specific changes to this mod's settings, such as tank or capacitor capacities, energy use and melting speeds, would live in the mod's config files. No config files for this mod were available, so the sources here do not show those values.

How do you progress through Productive Metalworks?

4 parts

Here is the path the pack's quests take you through: make Fire Clay, build a Foundry, melt metal, then cast it. In this pack the Foundry replaces Blueprints for getting your Silent Gear items, so you need Casts and a Foundry instead.[2][3]

Stage 1: Fire Clay and Fire Bricks

The Silent Gear quest "Silent Gear and Productive Metalworks" quest starts you off with Fire Clay. In Chapter 2, the quest "Making the Foundry" quest has you smelt that Fire Clay into Fire Brick, then combine 4 Fire Bricks to start the Foundry.[2][3]

That craft gives you Black Fire Bricks. That's fine, because you can dye them afterwards. Dyeing also works for the Foundry Windows, Tanks, Drains, Controllers and Capacitors.[3][4]

Crafting Shaped

Stage 2: Foundry parts

Next you collect the functional blocks. The Foundry Tank holds liquids, mostly fuel, and the quest suggests lava. The Liquid Heating Coil forms the floor and is warmed by that fuel to melt your items. The Foundry Drain, together with the Foundry Tap, is how you get the melted material out, since it's too hot for your hands or buckets. You right-click the Tap to drain, and the Drain also shows the liquid amounts inside the Foundry.[3]

Stage 3: Building the Foundry

The quests "Foundry" quest and "Building the Foundry" quest cover the build. The walls are Fire Bricks or Foundry Windows, and that's also where your Drains, Tanks and Controller go. The structure needs 4 walls and a floor, but the corners can stay empty. The inside can be as small as 1x1, though a bigger Foundry gives you more room.[2][3]

Stage 4: Casting

In the quest "Casting Items" quest you get a Casting Table, a Casting Basin and a Foundry Tap. You place the Tap on a Drain and put a casting block beneath it. The Casting Basin turns about 900mB of liquid metal into a full metal block.[2]

How does Productive Metalworks work with other mods?

5 parts

Productive Metalworks doesn't sit on its own in this pack. Its Foundry, molten metals and casts are wired into Silent Gear, Allthemodium, Oritech, Create-themed recipes, All the Ores and Dyenamics and Friends. Here is what each connection looks like, based on the pack's recipes and quests.[2][4]

Silent Gear

The quest "Silent Gear and Productive Metalworks" quest explains that the pack combines Silent Gear with Productive Metalworks. Instead of Blueprints, you need Casts and a Foundry to obtain your Silent items. You start with Fire Clay, the first step toward building the Foundry.[2]

The same chapter has quests for each cast type: Rod Cast, Gem Cast, Ingot Cast, Nugget Cast, Plate Cast and Gear Cast.[2]

Allthemodium

The pack changes the recipes so you can cast the Allthemodium metals in the Foundry. Molten Allthemodium, Molten Vibranium and Molten Unobtainium each cast into an ingot, nugget, plate, gear or rod. You pair the molten metal with the matching cast, such as the Ingot Cast for ingots and the Rod Cast for rods.[4]

Oritech

Oritech has the deepest integration. The pack changes a set of Oritech compat recipes so the Foundry can melt Oritech materials into Productive Metalworks metals. Small dusts, small clumps and gems of copper, gold, iron, nickel and platinum all melt into the matching molten metal. One example is Small Iron Dust into Molten Iron.[4]

The Foundry also alloys fluids into Oritech metals:[4]

You can then cast the results. Biosteel, duratium and energite become ingots with the Ingot Cast. Molten fluxite becomes Fluxite with the Gem Cast. Biofuel with a Gem Cast gives Biomass.[4]

Molten DuratiumChanged by the pack

All the Ores and Create

Several pack-changed casting recipes are filed under Create but mostly produce All the Ores items. Molten brass casts into Brass Ingot, Brass Nugget, Brass Plate and Brass Block. Molten zinc casts into Zinc Block. Plates come from molten copper, gold and iron with the Plate Cast, and molten copper also casts into Copper Nugget.[4]

Other metals reach All the Ores items through the Oritech compat recipes. Molten platinum casts into Platinum Ingot and Platinum Nugget. Molten electrum, nickel and steel cast straight into Electrum Block, Nickel Block and Steel Block.[4]

There is also a fun Create one. Chocolate with an Ingot Cast gives you a Bar of Chocolate.[4]

Dyenamics and Friends

The pack adds Foundry Capacitor recipes for the dye colors from Dyenamics and Friends. Each one casts the matching colored Fire Bricks with Molten Redstone. An example is Amber Fire Bricks into Amber Foundry Capacitor.[4]

Tip: Casting recipes with a cast item need a Casting Table. Recipes with no cast, like the metal blocks and capacitors, are block-casting recipes. Check each recipe in the recipe viewer to see which one you need.[2][4]

Which All the Mods 10: To the Sky quests use Productive Metalworks?

2 parts

Productive Metalworks appears in the "Chapter 2: The Cool Parts" and "Silent Gear" quest chapters of this pack. Both walk you through building a Foundry. The Silent Gear chapter then moves on to casts, which replace Silent Gear blueprints.[2][3]

Chapter 2: The Cool Parts

This chapter gets you building the Foundry. The quests unlock in this order:[3]

  1. "Making the Foundry" quest asks for Black Fire Bricks. It explains how to get from Fire Clay to Fire Bricks and then to the first Foundry bricks. They come out black, but you can dye them.[3]
  2. "Foundry Tanks and Heating" quest asks for a tank and a Liquid Heating Coil. Tanks hold the fuel, mostly lava. The coils form the Foundry floor and are warmed by that fuel to melt your items.[3]
  3. "Foundry Drains and Taps" quest also unlocks after the first quest. It asks for a drain and a Foundry Tap. You connect the tap to the drain and right-click the tap to pour out the materials. The drain also shows the liquid amounts inside the Foundry.[3]
  4. "Foundry" quest comes after the tanks and heating quest, the drains and taps quest, and a Foundry Controller quest. It accepts any of the dyed Fire Bricks, for example White Fire Bricks or Red Fire Bricks. It covers the assembly rules: 4 walls and a floor are required, the corners can stay empty, and the inside can be as small as 1x1. The Foundry is complete when the Controller lights up like a Furnace and the heating coils turn orange.[3]
  5. a quest in "Chapter 2: The Cool Parts" unlocks after the Foundry quest and asks for a Casting Basin. Its text covers making GeOres: you put Compressed Sand in the basin and run the tap from a drain above it.[3]

Silent Gear chapter

This chapter explains the pack's idea of combining Silent Gear with Productive Metalworks. Casts and a Foundry replace blueprints for obtaining Silent Gear items.[2]

  1. "Silent Gear and Productive Metalworks" quest is the starting point. It asks for Fire Clay, the first step toward the Foundry.[2]
  2. "Building the Foundry" quest asks for a Liquid Heating Coil plus another item that the quest file does not name. It unlocks after the starting quest and after quests for Foundry Drains, the Foundry Controller and Foundry Tanks. It repeats the Foundry construction rules, and you know it is built when the Controller lights up and the coils turn orange.[2]
  3. "Casting Items" quest asks for a Casting Table, a Casting Basin and a Foundry Tap. You place the tap on the drain and put the casting blocks beneath it. The text says the basin turns about 900mB of liquid metal into a full metal block, and it then points you to the Casting Table.[2]

After that come single-task quests that all unlock after a quest called "Casts". Each asks for one cast. They have no titles in the pack files, so they show up by ID:[2]
